Never Send To Know For Whom The Bell Tolls; It Tolls For ONT

Hello fellow Hordians! I found this picture fascinating:

tractor.jpg

That last little bit is fanciful, of course. I'm not a mechanic, but even I can see that you couldn't start it up. The damn thing's obviously flooded.

Headline Of The Week

Naked man driving stolen school bus with dead deer inside leads police on chase

It's easy to be critical, of course, but I enjoin each of you to remember the words of Jesus from John 8:7.

Yeah, didn't think so.

Our Liberal Friends

It's not that they are ignorant; it's that so much of what they know isn't so

What we see in the chart is that 22% of liberals think that 10,000 or more unarmed black men are shot by police officers every year. Almost 55% believe that 1000 to 10 or more thousand are gunned down every year.

The answer is 12 in 2019, and 11 in 2020. That doesn’t equate to being a bit inaccurate. It is not being in the same universe as the truth.

Conservatives overestimate the numbers, although about half of them get it right and the rest are not nearly as wrong as the liberals.

Liberals know a lot, but so much of it is simply not true. In no universe is 12 close to 1000-10,000.

I saw another poll that asked what percentage of the population was gay. The most common answer from liberals was between 20-30% (I do not have a link, I am citing from memory). This is the flaw in our system as envisioned by the founders. They never dreamed of a society where the populace was not uninformed, but deliberately misinformed, by a media and educational bureaucracy perverted to perform the opposite of their intended functions.

By the way, the article title is from Reagan's famous “A Time for Choosing” speech, which is as relevant today as it was 60 years ago.

The Audacity Of Woke

The Audacity Of Woke

Which brings us to the current moment. At the tip of the cultural Marxist spear today is the trans cult, just as a year ago it was the racialist cult. Their presence is smothering in cultural spaces, by design. The political left, academia, big tech, and the corporate world, have all taken up the trans cause for the same reasons they took up the cause of BLM before it: to gather power, destroy norms, attack traditions, and create the conditions of tribalism that must exist before the collective comes together, of necessity, out of the ruins of everyone’s cancellation. The last man standing is the New Man, devoid of any potential to create cultural friction. He is the perfect servant to a benevolent master.
Where we once were able to conceive of fascism — or Statist authoritarianism — as an iron boot forever pressing on our necks, today it’s a Christian Louboutin red-bottomed pump, worn by a dude in a lace dress and zebra thong, we imagine stomping on our faces forever. Only we’re compelled to dig the kink.
The revolution will be accessorized. And you’ll learn to like it. Or else.

All of this is textbook Marxism. Going back to my comments on the first link, I wonder how things would be different if the education system actually taught this stuff, and trained people to recognize it?

The Fountains Of The Great Deep

Oh look, another scientific discovery that shows the Bible was right all along

There's a layer of earth called "ringwoodite" that has this type of rock that is holding tons of H20, but it's not in a solid, liquid, or gas form. It's some 4th molecular form trapped in the rock.
"The ringwoodite is like a sponge, soaking up water, there is something very special about the crystal structure of ringwoodite that allows it to attract hydrogen and trap water," said geophysicist Steve Jacobsen, who was part of the monumental discovery.
"This mineral can contain a lot of water under conditions of the deep mantle."

Please note that this is not proof that Noah's flood happened, but it is evidence that the conditions of the flood as described in Genesis are well within the range of current scientific knowledge. IOW, a great flood is perfectly possible, and not necessarily an ancient fairy tale from peoples who had no knowledge of science.

Everything Old Is New Again

LBJ's stolen election

I’m sure you’ve heard people saying this before. Perhaps you’ve even said it yourself. ‘Those Democrats stole the election.’ And in this case, you’d be correct, but it’s probably not the election you’re thinking about. The Associated Press has an interesting walk down memory lane this week discovered in a set of tapes that were donated to the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum last summer. On the tapes, a former South Texas election judge told a reporter that the 1948 Texas Senate primary election was stolen in favor of LBJ and he described exactly how it was done. Democratic officials “found” some extra votes for Johnson in a box that became known as “box 13.” (Is any of this sounding familiar yet?) That allowed Johnson to move on to win the general election, ascend to the Senate, and eventually the presidency.

Again, another example of the left doing the same things, over and over. Why? Because they work. Generally speaking, I think the right has a better grasp of human nature than the left, but where the left excels is at understanding human weaknesses, particularly among groups of people or societies, and boy do they exploit them for all they're worth.

Clothes Maketh The Man

No. Medieval Armies didn't look like Highschool Theatre Productions

This is an interesting article about something completely foreign to modern folks: clothes. No, I'm not talking about OnlyFans, but the sheer, mind boggling abundance of clothing that we enjoy without a second thought.

Medieval clothing existed in an era before modern artificial dyes, before modern texture fabrication or even the Cotton Gin, before modern detergents!

Most people in the medieval world owned one, maybe two, outfits if they were wealthy.

It would take days or weeks of an individual weaver’s effort to make the fabric sufficient for an outfit, the tailors might take another week.

CLOTHING WAS A MAJOR INVESTMENT.

You can read novels from the 18th and 19th century, or hell even the early 20th, where the poor and destitute are literally Threadbare, their one outfit’s threads have started to give way and their ass is hanging out. And the poor would just go around like that… for months or years until they finally got enough money to Cloth themselves, or more likely, they died.

If you want to imagine the medieval or even early modern world… just imagine the modern third world if they weren’t receiving the trade, scraps, and charity of wealthier countries.
The average person was buying a new outfit maybe every 5-10 years! And they were wearing that outfit everyday, in all weather, for all work.

I often find that it's by looking at common, mundane items from the past where it's easiest to start to understand how different things were from today, along with what the poorest among us have today that the top elites lacked in the past. We're less than 100 years from the son of the President of the United States dying from a blister on his foot, and today the working class has access to million dollar operating suites and the services of Hopkins trained surgeons. Truly a different world.

Dudes Being Dudes

The structure they're dropping the rock into was identified as a gasometer or gas holder (a structure used to regulate pressure in gas lines, a large space, the volume of which could be changed (by expansion and contraction of the size of the space) to effect such regulation). I remember when they imploded one that had stood next to TV Hill in Baltimore since the 1930s about a decade back. I suppose if you had a large lid that could move up and down in the hole it would work, but that doesn't seem right to me. Most gas holders were large, above ground structures that looked like fat silos or oil tanks. Anyone know what the hole could be? By the timing of the fall (7.5 seconds) it would be somewhere between 7-800 feet deep.

17 The condition of some WWII wrecks, and the imagery from them, are amazing. Somehow I missed the Hornet stuff. RV Petrel, an indulgence of "the other Microsoft guy", Paul Allen, was responsible for a lot of the discoveries and imagery. Not sure if that project continues under his heir(s). Shame if not.

Well, worse than a shame, actually, considering how much damage is being done to the world by the "philanthropic" bequests and activities of so many contemporary billionaires.

Not just the Army. The USAF has come up short on their recruiting goals too. I'm guessing it's the same for the rest of the military branches. Weird. What could be causing this? A mystery. A conundrum. A head scratcher.

73 I don't think that concrete shaft is a gasometer. Those are usually vastly bigger in diameter, and not nearly so tall, and are built on surface. My guess? Abandoned missile silo, or a concrete-lined bored mine shaft.

And that article about the ringwoodite is full of wrong facts. The mantle layer where it occurs is not "under the Earth's core". The core has no "under". And ringwoodite is a particular composition of olivine. Not all the mantle is comprised of olivine, and not all of that is going to be ringwoodite. So you don't have a vast ocean of steaming hot liquid water sloshing around in the mantle; you have a crystal mush with a little water and a little hydroxyl (OH-) carried within it. Some of that escapes in volcanic eruptions fed from the mantle, like in Hawaii.

93 That article about Medieval clothing is well-meaning but erroneous. Medieval people liked bright colors, or as bright as they could get them, and wore colored clothes often. Sumptuary laws were enacted in many places; they were an earlier form of the dress codes of the past century, and dictated what people of particular social classes could wear in clothing, both color, material, and cut. Nobles and royalty spent boodles on clothing, not just for themselves, but for their retainers, as a point of pride. Many people received a new cloak and/or tunic as a yearly gift from their lord as "livery and maintenance" support; it might not have been of the best & brightest, but it was of good wool or linen, with a nice color and pattern.

99 …along with what the poorest among us have today that the top elites lacked in the past.

I’m reading a Frigidaire manual from 1928. One of the most fascinating lines:

Frigidaire affords care-free refrigeration in that it is entirely automatic and dependable in operation. It is possible to go away for the week end or even longer without considering food supply.

The audience for this manual does not have servants to watch the food while they’re away. If the buy a refrigerator/freezer, they will no longer have to babysit their ice box—if they even have one.

But there’s a lot more hidden in that line. People used to have to guard their belongings not just because they’d go bad, but because they’d be stolen. Wherever their market for these refrigerators lives, Frigidaire is assuming that it is safe for them to leave not only their food unguarded, but their expensive new appliance as well.

(I’m not missing that this is one year before 1929, of course.)

That's what happens when people stop dragging their kids to Sunday school every week before/after church service, and don't educate them in the Gospel stories. For a while up here that was the case if you lived on parts of the Kenai peninsula, where the Tustamena hydro project generated electric. I mean the Seder points to Jesus.

The Matzah Tosh holds three pieces of matzah. The highest one remains hidden in the highest position.

Then comes the middle one (the afikomen), which is revealed, is broken, wrapped in cloth and hidden and then returns. The child that finds the broken matzah receives a gift (usually a piece of candy).

Then last one remains behind.

I'm not sure how the image of the Most High, the broken One that disappears, wrapped in cloths, and returns with the gift of salvation, and the Holy Spirit is not visible to all.

We have to. The bedrock around here is 6-12" below the dirt so the gas utility will not run supply lines. So, electric it is. We are under a TVA umbrella supplier so it really isn't too bad compared to other areas.

I do have a propane bottle for cooking however.

146 When the Last Major Glaciation ended, it likely did so catastrophically from an impact on the North American Ice Sheet. Sea levels rose 200' in rapid fashion. India alone lost a Texas' worth of land under the ocean. Given how close humanity usually lives to the sea, and the time this likely occurred (~9500 BC), I'd say this is the origin of the near universal flood myth (as in "history before writing" not "fiction") comes from. It was global in the sense that it affected nearly every human on the planet, but it wasn't complete in the sense that it covered all land on earth all at once.

An educated Puerto Rican that looks whiter than me flew into a rage that almost got both of us written up when I explained to her with cites using liberal NGO data that there are over 100 million people right now (which is more than there were slaves in the United States during ITS history) living in chattel slavery on the globe.

Would have taken the write-up laughing and as you say her rage was "I do not give a fuck about any of that I am worried about THIS country."

Which oddly has not had chattel slabery since I was -106.

It's always enjoyable when someone says an act of God doesn't fit their models.

I mean is there evidence that a guy can die and come back to life three days later and then bodily ascend into heaven?

Is there a scientific model that shows how you can feed 5000 people with a few loaves and fishes and yet still be plenty of leftovers?

Oh, well, if there isn't a science model that proves it, I guess it just didn't happen. Because science is the ultimate authority.

231 17 The condition of some WWII wrecks, and the imagery from them, are amazing. Somehow I missed the Hornet stuff. RV Petrel, an indulgence of "the other Microsoft guy", Paul Allen, was responsible for a lot of the discoveries and imagery. Not sure if that project continues under his heir(s). Shame if not.

Petrel was laid up in Scotland, "due to Covid-19" (that's what her Wiki page said). She was brought last year by the US Navy. She was in dry dock undergoing repairs and rehabilitation after lay up. Late last month, she fell off the stocks onto her starboard side. Navy sending team to investigate. Haven't seen anything later than that.

There are several videos on the Tube of Yews about the incident.

As for USS Hornet, not looked through the previously provided footage but the red cooling line for one of the quad 1.1in 'Chicago Piano' anti-aircraft guns is still attached and in apparently perfect condition.

Hornet was a tough ship. Got somewhere on the computer the Santa Cruz damage report. Bombs and torpedoes multiple times. Immobilized the ship but refused to sink. American destroyers tried to sink her with more torpedoes but ship remained afloat. The Japanese chased the Americans off and tried to take the ship in tow thinking what a prize. But Hornet refused to go along quietly so the Japanese proceeded to try and sink her with naval gunfire. When that failed they gave brave Hornet more torpedoes and that finally sent the gallant lady to a watery grave in Davey Jones Locker.

Look at what the coastlines looked like at the peak of the last ice age, and then later (I forget all the details). Much more land mass exposed, and the coastlines are all now well under water.

As was mentioned above, just about every culture the world over has some sort of flood myth. I think there was some high civilization that existed way back, perhaps globe spanning (I don't buy that it was high tech or anything), but maybe ancient Egyptian, even Roman level.

It was wiped out during some cataclysm well over 10K years ago, and the flood myths are a dim collective memory of that ancient destruction.

This is currently being debated, with most mainstream archeologists and paleoanthropologists with a specialty in the New world foaming at the mouth and threatening to bite people for mentioning it (THERE ARE NO MICRODIAMONDS they shout for some reason)

320 LED bulbs are not a lot better. They have advantages in some applications but fail in others, emit a lot of RF and generally have in the more affordable range a far shorter life than advertised and inferior light. You have to pay the big bucks to get close to 2700 k and they fade out if they don’t burn out (and they do, and fast in humid environments)
I use some in summer but cheap incandescents give off better light and the heat doesn’t go to waste in winter. A 75 or hundred watt bulb can keep pipes from freezing whether in crawl space or run along a cold wall in a hard freeze for example. warm a small shed, etc.

The light is usually harsh and uncomfortable.

The other day I paid 15 dollars for a single bulb that I could dim, 2700K”nearness”, and 8m not sure I can get away with hanging it upside down.

I want my light bulbs back,

What I find fascinating is the reason one person has put forth on why Tut's tomb was not found. A flash flood washed through the Valley of the Kings and acted to cement the limestone that covered the entrance to Tut's tomb. Not because Tut was forgotten.

I ran across something interesting the other day. Some group reprocessing data from an older radar map of Venus discovered evidence of ongoing vulcanism on a large mountain feature near the planet's equator. A large volcanic vent had changed size and shape over the course of a few months. It appears that Venus is simply rife with volcanoes, and shows no evidence at all of plate tectonics. No oceans, of course. Appears to be rather like what a primordial Earth may have been like.

What Venus needs to alter its climate is water. A metric fuckton of water. If we could some sort of gravitational siphon going to suck up ice from Saturn's rings, and dump it out on Venus, we might be able to make it into a habitable planet.

See the concept of floating habitats in the Venusian atmosphere. The surface of Venus is about the closest thing to Hell I can think of. However, way up top, above that thick atmosphere, it would be a very different story.

Earth air (20/80 O2/N2) is a lifting gas in Venus thick atmosphere. Such a "balloon" would equilibriate at about 31 miles above the surface. Pressure there would be 1 atm. So a leak wouldn't be that bad.

Second, the atmosphere has a superrotation, and circle the planet in about 4 earth days. So you would get a roughly 4 day day/night cycle.

Holy...shit. It took a week to disassemble. We had to make a jig out of 1 1/4 " steel plate that we bolted to the cylinders with a huge center bolt as a press screw against the pistons to help us press the pistons out of the cylinders as we lifted the cylinders. I never saw aluminum rot like the engine cases on this thing did. We pulled about 5 pounds of sand out of it. The tractor looks like it would be an easier resurrection.

366 Jimmy Carter left his peanut farm in an 'irrevokable' trust except that it wasn't. It was treated exactly as Trump's trust was.

And a trust is operated by others. Bragg even wrote in the indictment that the false documents were made by the trust. So Trump 17 Feb 2017 could not have directed the creation of false documents without the illegal conspiracy with the trustees.

BTW after Carter got his ass kicked he lost the peanut farm in a bankruptcy. FWIW

I'm thinking Bragg is a diversity hire who let the wagon get ahead of the horses here. He really cannot be this stupid but there it is. On paper.

He's the walking, talking, embodiment of the Peter Principal. Hope he enjoys his moment in the spotlight, because this is as high as he goes.

Venus rotates bass-ackwards, and the sidereal rotation period is greater than the orbital period.

Thus, on Venus, the Sun rises in the West and sets in the East. The length of a solar day there is about 117 earth days. If you want to see how this works, there are some diagrams. You've got the Sun moving in the sky west to east, and the planet rotating bassackwards and you can see how that works out.

So daylight length is about 58 days, and 48 days of night.

424 I remember when I was young (the early 1950s), and we were encouraged to donate old clothes to the poor people in (name the poor country).
That stopped - flat - once manufactured fibers became common. So-called 'natural fibers' - cotton, wool, linen - wear out rather quickly. For example, the life of a bedsheet was around 2 years. After that, housewives were patching and stitching the worn-out sheets until they could be replaced. To keep the sheets from wearing out, they were often only changed infrequently - maybe once or twice a month. In the days before disposable diapers, that was a lot of sheet changes (and clothing) for young children.
Today, I have in my linen cupboard sheets from early in my marriage - that's nearly 50 years ago. They have some wear, and the colors aren't as bright, but they can still be used. And, that's with weekly washing.
Same with other household fabrics and family clothing. They are replaced more often due to fashion changes or weight gain.

They probably were crushed at first, but as the pressure equalized and water leaked in, the tires would eventually pop back out to their original uninflated shape.
