El Salvador's Mega-Prison Takes In Another 2000 Gang Members as Inmates

And when I say "mega-prison," I'm not exaggerating. The prison was built to house 40,000 gang-members.

How do you cram that many prisoners into one prisoner?

By stacking them up four levels high:

Many of the prisoners are being held there before any trial.

The US should condemn this practice, because, as you well know -- the United States of America never indiscriminately throws hundreds of people into prison with no trial just because the current government has declared a "war" on them.

A mega-prison in El Salvador brought in a second wave of suspected gang members who will now serve out their sentences in the notorious facility that has been criticised over its 'severe conditions.'
The second group of 2,000 inmates were moved today amid tight security to the new Izalco prison, the largest mega-prison in the Americas, which was built to accommodate more than 40,000 gangsters.

The first 2,000 inmates were moved last month.
The transfer operation took place on the same day that Justice and Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro asked parliament to extend the state of emergency for another month.
The prison was built to accommodate some of the 65,000 suspected gangsters detained as part of the war on crime launched last year by President Bukele, who ordered a state of emergency a year ago, allowing arrests without warrants in the violence-plagued country.
The prison in Tecoluca, 74 kilometers (46 miles) southeast of the capital San Salvador, consists of eight buildings made of reinforced concrete.
Each one has 32 cells of about 100 square meters (1,075 square feet), designed to hold 'more than 100' inmates, according to Public Works Minister Romeo Rodriguez.
Rights groups have criticised the construction as a violation of incarceration standards.

CNN calls it "shocking" to hold people in prison without a court hearing.

Wait until they find out what's going in in the DC Gulag, huh?

They have supported this practice as regards the January 6th protesters -- to the extent they've permitted mention of it on CNN at all.

Strange how CNN always thinks that noncitizens are due more rights than actual US citizens.

Media Matters likewise attacks the "right wing," because apparently we authorized and built this prison or something.

Media Matter, of course, routinely attacks "right wing" critics of the DOJ who object to putting American protesters in solitary confinement, in prison (not jail), for up to a year or more without trial, because Trump supporter, you see, deserve this.

El Salvadoran gang members -- who are in fact gang-members; they wear huge MS-13 tattoos announcing their gang membership to the world -- should all be freed, obviously.

Trump supporters should just rot in jail, forever.

But those guys are the enforcers for the gangs up there and the gangs and the aldermen for those districts are simpatico because the gangs get out the Chitown vote one way or another.

I've read a couple of book that look at "evil" in humans and yes, genetics plays a factor, along with environment. Some folks are blessed with genes that make them more tolerant of bad conditions, others have genes (or brain damage from accidents) than make them psychopaths (evil ones).

When this kind of thing happens, it tends to be borderline (or actually) indiscriminate. Some innocent people absolutely do get rounded up and punished with the largely-guilty group. It happens regardless of who is in the "(re)assert authority" position. If it had been MS-13 executing a formal revolution, they would round up government loyalists and put bullets in them. Some of those rounded up would be regular old bureaucrats who are no risk to anyone. Likewise in this direction, some of those being rounded up are probably not MS-13. Such is the way it goes when you utterly lose control and have to reassert it all at once.

Yes and no. Prisons have become homes for broken individuals that are difficult at best to salvage. But these broken individuals living on the anarchic streets that exist in urban and increasingly suburban areas under arguably worse conditions is also a fact.

Simply put, the Quakers were in fact wrong to create criminal warehouses without the required rest of the societal changes necessary to enforce deviant individuals to toe the line. Japan has some of the more harsh prison conditions around but the prisons are there to remind prisoners that the standing nail is hammered down so that they can reenter society somewhat. Society and its organization there ensures that prisoners are allowed to reintegrate but only at the cost of their personal desires to live like they want. In Japan, the balance is the common good over the individual's personal autonomy.

In the US, rights based arguments and court decisions emphasize the individual and their rights to autonomy over the common good on incarceration.

Right, and all sides in the conflict know that. That's essentially what this is - a civil war. The government has essentially been defeated by internal actors who act with impunity. The government decided to fight back. It is, in essence, a rebellion. As far as civil wars go, taking tens of thousands of POWs and cowing the rest of the opposition into good behavior with a relatively low final body count is not a bad approach.

Now that they've mapped the human genome, they discovered it was far more complex than just having or not having a gene. Our cells actually keep the genes bundled up and much of our genome never gets used. But for reasons they don't fully understand, the cell with alter the gene bundles to uncover other genes. This field is called Epigenomics and it's also a leading theory on why we age.

Not really true, they had a ceremony a few weeks ago with a group of them. Russia was a bit miffed at the pardon, since that was Wagner's idea.

The western press' idea of Russian losses is very exaggerated. Wagner couldn't remain an able offensive force if they were true, for one thing.

I'm not, for several reasons. First, it's extrajudicial punishment. Second, it favors the most brutal prisoners. Third, mistakes do get made, and innocent people do get convicted sometimes. Fourth, if the government uses prison to punish political opponents (e.g., J6), they don't deserve to get brutalized.

And I don't want to be the candy assed who says this but I will, most of these guys have been brutalized by fathers or others, many sexually. Other than the interesting comments about a rage gene, a lot of these guys haven't learned anger management (by fathers) or how to be a member of a society. I've told the story before, but the wife of a convict told a group of us that the jailbird's specialty was to burgle someone's house, then call him up and offer to sell him his own stuff back. He was surprised when the cops were waiting for him as he approached with the loot (aka "evidence").

He did his time, got out, and then DID THE EXACT SAME THING AGAIN, WITH THE EXACT SAME OUTCOME. No criminal mastermind, he. On the bright side, he did confirm that the experiment was reproducible.

I've also read that something like over 80% of people in prison grew up in fatherless homes.

As did my two younger brothers and I. I was blessed with relatively high intelligence, a strong desire to escape poverty, and channeled my emotional distress into relatively healthy obsessions (workaholic, marathon running, big Cinema fan,philosophy/politic/news junkie, etc.) -- so over-achieved and never ran afoul of the law.

Next brother was average intelligence, who had continuable problems with DUI's as he self-medicated. Youngest brother was below average intelligence, and has spent a number of years in and out of prison as he self-medicated with hard drugs including PCP -- which led him to commit violent crimes.

Depends on motivation of the troops. The 7th Armored lost its edge because the men decided it was time for other units to take the casualties now that there were a lot more of them. The men were still good in actual combat. They just resented what they saw as being asked to do more than others.

As for Wagner, weren't they primarily up in the northern pocket that the Ukrainians eliminated? Might explain heavy casualties. Or I could be misremembering.

Not really. Cops in many cases 'know' who did crimes based on motive, etc. but lack enough evidence to rise to beyond a reasonable doubt. Then, you also have corruption in the judicial system playing a part in whack a mole justice roulette.

Contrary to mystery/crime series, almost always the reality is that most violent crime in particular are committed by criminals with lengthy rap sheets and that their victims also have a criminal rap sheet of varying lengths.

Most people have no idea how few cops are on the street at any given moment. Take the number of cops in your city. I'll use SeattlePD as an example. They have 940 as of 2022. Now take off at least 35% as admin/desk jobs. That's 611. Now divide by four for the number of shifts. That's 153. Now take off 20% for sickness/vacation/whatever. That's 122 cops at any given time for a city of 734,000 or one cop for every 6,016 people on average.

That's even before you think about how certain high crime areas are "underpoliced" even with a couple of dozen cops standing around that single block, and how that leaves many areas with far less than one cop for 6,016 people.

No, and there was no pocket in the area near Kharkov. One unit of about 500 did not retreat in the initial orders and was cut off, but a nifty counteroffensive broke them out. The Russians lost ground there, not a lot of men. Those areas were held by scratch forces, so when the Us tried using Marine tactics of running mobile raids inbetween the held towns, the Russians pulled out to save troops to a shorter line.

Wagner has been down south near Donetsk city, steadily pushing forward since late summer-ish in the same zone relieving the militias there.

454 Most people have no idea how few cops are on the street at any given moment. Take the number of cops in your city. I'll use SeattlePD as an example. They have 940 as of 2022. Now take off at least 35% as admin/desk jobs. That's 611. Now divide by four for the number of shifts. That's 153. Now take off 20% for sickness/vacation/whatever. That's 122 cops at any given time for a city of 734,000 or one cop for every 6,016 people on average.

That's even before you think about how certain high crime areas are "underpoliced" even with a couple of dozen cops standing around that single block, and how that leaves many areas with far less than one cop for 6,016 people.

In truth, JP was an ornery old coot difficult to like but when you can raise enough money to bail out the US govt twice, get the best of Andrew Carnegie, and other stunts, you can have as big a place as you like down in the Georgia sticks at the time.

JP once sat outside President Cleveland's office most of a day while he waited for Cleveland and his Sec. of Treasury to come to the realization that he would have to have JP bail the US govt out using an obscure Civil War era law. The US was about to default on the exchange of gold in return for printed obligations and payments which would have resulted in an international default for the US.
