Quote II

I still remember my parents saying to me, "If everyone you knew jumped off the bridge would you to?" Damn good advice.

A new viral trend on TikTok resulted in nearly 30 college students from the University of Massachusetts being taken to the hospital over the weekend. Officials said there were so many calls for alcohol-related incidents at off-campus parties that other neighboring agencies were called to assist.

Luckily, none of the incidents were considered life-threatening.

Officials at the school said that most of the cases were the result of people drinking "BORGs," which stands for blackout rage gallons.

My desire to visit Berlin continues to wane.

Women and “non-binary” people with breasts will be able to go topless at Berlin swimming pools after a ruling from the German capital’s diversity ombudsman.

The move follows an appeal to the Senate Department for Justice, Diversity, and Anti-Discrimination in Berlin by a woman who was not allowed to go topless at a pool in the city at the end of 2022, according to a CNN report emphasising the alleged “health benefits of communal open-air nudity”.

Bookmark this link the next time the shrill Swedish Lingonberry opens her pie hole.

Being the international spokesperson for a fake crisis can be tough, as the child actor who acts as the mouthpiece for the climate change industry has just been reminded. On Saturday, Human Events senior editor Jack Posobiec tweeted at pint-sized climate scold Greta Thunberg, “Hi @GretaThunberg! Why did you delete this?” The deleted tweet in question had Greta quoting this: “A climate scientist is warning that climate change will wipe out all of humanity unless we stop using fossil fuels over the next five years.” The date on Greta’s tweet? June 21, 2018. Either we have just over three months to live, or Greta’s tweet was juuuuust a trifle hysterical. Her deletion of the tweet suggests that even Greta knows that the sun is likely to rise on June 22, 2023.

I understand enjoying long weekends. But on a permanent basis? Lazy ass politician believes so.

California Congressman Mark Takano has reintroduced a bill that would make four-day workweeks a federal mandate, something that would bring about "a significant change which will increase the happiness of humankind," as Takano told CNBC.

"Workers across the nation are collectively reimagining their relationship to labor — and our laws need to follow suit," Takano said in March 1 statement. "We have before us the opportunity to make common sense changes to work standards passed down from a different era.

Animal personalities can trip up science, but there’s a solution

Several years ago, Christian Rutz started to wonder whether he was giving his crows enough credit. Rutz, a biologist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and his team were capturing wild New Caledonian crows and challenging them with puzzles made from natural materials before releasing them again. In one test, birds faced a log drilled with holes that contained hidden food, and could get the food out by bending a plant stem into a hook. If a bird didn’t try within 90 minutes, the researchers removed it from the dataset.

But, Rutz says, he soon began to realize he was not, in fact, studying the skills of New Caledonian crows. He was studying the skills of only a subset of New Caledonian crows that quickly approached a weird log they’d never seen before—maybe because they were especially brave, or reckless.

Eighteen female guards at 'Britain's cushiest jail' have been fired for having illicit affairs with inmates.

Figures discovered in Freedom of Information requests found that the relationships took place over the past six years at HMP Berwyn, Britain's biggest prison.

The information follows three of the women ending up in court following the illicit liaisons at the Wrexham jail in North Wales.

About Amazon Prime going the EV delivery route. Not so fast.

n exclusive agreement between Amazon and Rivian for 100,000 electric delivery vans is reportedly on its way to being scrapped. The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that Rivian is negotiating its way out of the deal after Amazon asked for only 10,000 electric vans this year, below the electric carmaker’s expectations. The WSJ cited sources familiar with the talks but who can’t speak publicly about ending the deal.

The original plan for 100,000 vans to be delivered to Amazon by 2030 was made in 2019 and buoyed Rivian’s prospects as a viable startup automaker before it delivered its first R1T electric pickup truck. Amazon is Rivian’s largest shareholder and owns nearly 20% of the company, according to reports.

This is why we can't have nice things. We can't take you damn kids anywhere.

Astonishing new dashcam footage has emerged of an enormous fight involving machetes, axes and hammers that interrupted mourners at a Welsh cemetery.

Nine funeral-goers were jailed last month, six months after a feud between two family factions boiled over into extreme violence at the Morriston Crematorium in Swansea.

Previous clips of the incident have shown large vans and white cars being driven over the grass at the graveyard.

But the new video, released by South Wales Police, goes inside the vehicles to show the participants in the fight wielding weapons like baseball bats and bricks.

The ONT Musical Interlude & Snow Shovel Emporium

On this day: 13 Mar 2006
The Sex Pistols refused to attend their own induction into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Blondie, Herb Alpert and Black Sabbath were all inducted but the Pistols posted a handwritten note on their website, calling the institution 'urine in wine', adding 'We're not your monkeys, we're not coming. You're not paying attention'. via thisdayinmusic.com

You may not like their music, but their opinion about the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is spot on. And BTW it's good stuff.

At the right place, at the right time. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

A bystander rescued a child from the Santa Ana riverbed in the Fairview Street area of Santa Ana on Sunday after the boy was swept half a mile down the river, officials said.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Thanh Nguyen said the boy was playing with two other children near the riverbed before he was swept away after getting too close to the water’s edge. The child’s father jumped into the riverbed, along with another relative, but the two men were also swept down the riverbed.

Around 2:05 p.m., firefighters launched a swift water rescue response before a bystander jumped in and rescued the child. Nguyen said the boy was treated by firefighter paramedics, was sent to the hospital and was reported to be stable. The other two men swam safely back to shore.

Despite the break from rainfall, the OCFA said there may still be water flowing throughout waterways in the county.

It is stories like this that renew my faith in our fellow Americans.

You don't jump into a riverbed; you jump into a river. Some rivers are there more or less all the time, other can be pretty ephemeral. But if there is water flowing in them, that's what sweeps you away, and makes you in need of rescuing.

When I see 'common sense' in the context of gun control**, AGW, traffic, etc., I always ask myself "Who is going to have the authority of defining 'common' and 'sense'. Usually for these people 'common' is not and is only what fits an individual's agenda. Can't even start on 'sense' as most of these people have no sense. If they can believe in 100+ genders (sexes?) and referring to themselves as plurals - they/them - then it's nonsense squared not commonsense.

Same kind of thinking that I see on a local website. During the pandemic people thought it was wonderful that no one could be evicted. Of course, there were people got sloppy about paying their rent. Now the same people are complaining that their rent is being raised. Also a lot of local landlords decided they didn't like being in a rental business anymore and sold out to big companies, who are much more impersonal and quick to raise rent.
It never occurred to these people that making things difficult for landlords could have a downside.

He's repented from some of his more insane youthful comments.
Their big single "God Save the Queen" was an ugly riff on QE2. When she passed last year, Johnny said it was a sad day for Britain, and actually recapitulated the lyrics to the real "God Save the Queen", and outwardly hoped no one would play that Sex Pistols song from the '70's.
There was a pretty interesting mini-series on the Sex Pistols on Hulu (if you get streaming) called "Pistol", which was pretty entertaining, and also somewhat sad and tragic.
The only person in the story that doesn't come off as a jerk and comes off as a decent human being was (hold your surprise)....Chrissie Hynde, who was living in the UK and knew all these guys.

In another house there was a woman who had three daughters out of wedlock, and no job. This woman was allowed to sit on her ass and do nothing even though her kids were in school. Before I moved each of the two oldest daughters were pregnant by the time they were fifteen. I'm assuming the third one went the same way.

Ozone layer - HA! So much bad science and bad atmospheric engineering, particularly Chemistry. On the one hand they tell us that mixing between the lower troposphere and the upper stratosphere is minimal and slow; then in the same breath we get lectured that every molecule of bad** CFCs goes straight up to the upper reaches of the stratosphere and reacts with ozone there, destroying it.
I didn't realize it at the time (late 80s early 90s) but the American Chemical Society fell for this hook, line and sinker (maybe even the rod) as they had on the smaller scale Acid Rain 'doom problem'. I think there were lots of monetary promises made (by politicians), maybe even professorships, to potentially influential individuals hence the appearance of the bandwagon.
Also the American Physical Society.

I AGREE.
Back in the day when Pluto was observed for the first time, it was classified as a planet. So the definition of planet was already set. I don't care that a small faction of the Astronomical brotherhood** decided to make their names known by applying a different set of criteria for a planet. Most of the world is against the reclassification and these mavericks have made an astronomical blunder and I classify this group as hairyholes that suck fecal matter from outer space.
LET'S IGNORE THEM.

[Can we say Brotherhood any longer? Astronomical Personhood does not sound right.]

339 I've been waiting for Ace or a co-blogger to cover the news of the Biden administration actually allowing some drilling for oil in Alaska. (Did they cover it and I missed it?)

Oh how salty the Left is about this. "Wait, I thought Biden promised no drilling!" "Bad news for climate change!"

https://fxn.ws/3mEg0vx

"The Department of Interior (DOI) approved three of the five drilling sites proposed by oil company ConocoPhillips as part of its Willow Project"

I'm bullish on the future of renewable energy; it's cheap, the "fuel" for it is free, and if built right it will be reliable. But until the amazing renewable system is ready (which it is NOT yet) we need lots of oil, and I'm in favor of the USA producing its own oil so we are self-sufficient. So this is good news no matter how you look at it.

But if you look at it as a bunch of leftists feeling betrayed by Brandon, it's all the better.

> I am betting that it will never happen on Biden's watch.

The incompetence of the Biden administration turned the roaring Trump economy into a disaster. We need the oil. My bet is that they have looked at the economic projections and they are taking the hit with their allies now, because it's hard to win re-election after presiding over a disastrous economy.

Of course they are incompetent and the economy will be lousy whether the drilling happens or not, but it will be worse without the extra oil.

By the way, electric mining dump trucks exist and may make sense. This is a news story about a giant electric truck that can haul 65 tons of ore. It never needs charging! It drives uphill under battery power, and while rolling downhill, it charges its battery by controlling its speed with "regenerative braking". The tons of ore mean that there is more energy being extracted while rolling downhill than it takes to drive uphill empty.

https://bit.ly/30pOaTW

If an electric vehicle makes economic sense, companies will use one, and also hand out press releases about how virtuous they are.

Anyway, the "environmentalists" have been snaring the well meaning and gullible for a long time. Much of what they say sounds good, but they have proven to be susceptible to corruption, and probably the same axiom applies "Every organization starts out as a movement and then turns into a racket".

Whatever their goals or aims were in 1950 or 1970 they are not the same as 1990 or 2010. Illegal migration alone, hordes of millions bumrushing our border should have the Sierra Club and Climate Club Cult members forming a human chain at the borders.

I've never heard a fucking peep out of any of these cocksuckers, ever, in the press or academia or anywhere in the last several decades but they sure do complain about all the people despoiling their precious national playgrounds and forests.

> "Renewable" energy isn't cheap, it's entirely a byproduct of subsidies based on a mythical externality, it's a ridiculous and outrageous looting and wasted investment festival.

Solar and wind power have gotten so cheap that they are now literally cheaper than the cost of operating a coal plant. Even if the coal plant is already paid for, operating it costs more than building and then operating solar or wind power.

https://bit.ly/3lctLBq

So why aren't we already 100% solar/wind? Because you can't depend on them... the sun goes down at night, and cloudy days happen, and the wind doesn't always blow.

With the right design, and a whole bunch of batteries, these problems will be solved, because power companies like to make money.

Nothing I just said has anything to do with subsidies. You could cancel all subsidies to renewables and the above is all still true.

But my advice is to keep drilling for oil until the above comes true. And if I'm full of it and the above never comes true, go ahead and keep drilling for oil.

Oil will run out someday, but I'm not worried about it, because I really do believe we can and will switch to renewables.

For mines that aren't at the top of mountains, the trucks can use a "trolley assist" system. Charged by overhead wires as they drive. Siemens, Komatsu, and Caterpillar all have trucks like this, or are working on them, says the Internets. Probably others too.

And neither system is going to get me into an electric pickup truck. Minnesota is pretty flat, and putting trolley wires above all the roads sounds dangerous and expensive, but mostly dangerous.

It doesn't say there but I think that her problem is 'no privacy' for some hanky-panky and thus a lack of gentlemen-callers. She wants HER OWN ROOM so she can practice making more babies. Soon they may be paying her to do just that, in order to fix the birth/death rate.

> So when "we" switch 100% to these renewables, is this a voluntary thing? The answer by all accounts is "No".

Hey man, don't try to put that on me. I don't like the government forcing us to do stuff.

The various laws banning fossil fuel cars by 2030 or 2035 or whatever are on the theory that We're All Going to Die[TM] due to Catastrophic Global Warming, and I'm not convinced about that.

> Nobody had to outlaw horses, if you'll recall from your history books.

And I'm predicting that nobody will have to force people to buy electric vehicles; they will want them. The Democrats will, in 2030, be pointing at all the people who bought electric cars and say "We did that! We saved the planet!" It would happen anyway.

And I don't think the Democrats realize just how much money they committed to spend in the so-called "Inflation Reduction Act" on the various incentives. Tesla is gearing up to make world-changing amounts of batteries and the "IRA" is going to hand them stacks of money for doing it, where it would already have been hugely profitable without the "IRA".

> And neither system is going to get me into an electric pickup truck. Minnesota is pretty flat, and putting trolley wires above all the roads sounds dangerous and expensive, but mostly dangerous.

There's no longer a need for trolley wires. Batteries now hold enough power to do useful work.

I don't think you should get an electric pickup truck unless you want one. It's possible that once the Tesla Cybertruck ships, you might want one.

Current electric pickup trucks are okay for some uses but suck for towing or hauling really heavy loads. We'll have to see but I'm betting the Cybertruck will be better than any other electric pickup truck.

Here's a video where a guy who claims to be an engineer explains why the Cybertruck was designed the way it was. Spoiler: it was designed that way to be the best possible pickup truck.

https://bit.ly/42bfdT9

The top model of Cybertruck is supposed to have 500 miles of range on one battery charge. I think they did that, not because people need to drive 500 miles, but so that when the range is cut in half while towing the truck will still get around 250 miles so as not to be useless.

> How much will new batteries cost when these don't charge up sufficiently any longer? Cheaper than a new truck? Will new batteries or new truck have a smaller 'carbon issue'.**

The cost of batteries is falling over time. When Tesla was first founded, over a decade and a half ago, people mocked Elon Musk for thinking batteries would ever be cheap enough to use in cars.

You can grind up old lithium ion batteries and recover the materials, and it's cheaper than mining and refining was in the first place. A company called Redwood Materials is ramping up to do large-scale battery recycling.

https://www.redwoodmaterials.com/

So it should be much less expensive to replace a battery pack than the whole vehicle.

Note that Tesla says that its batteries are still 90% as good as new after 200,000 miles. In other words, if the car drove 335 miles when new, it will still drive 300 miles after 200,000 miles.

403 Huh, I'm getting tired and should go to sleep.

"In other words, if the car drove 335 miles when new, it will still drive 300 miles after 200,000 miles."

I meant: if the car could drive 335 miles with a full charge when it was new, it will still drive 300 miles with a full charge (as full as it can get) after the car has driven 200,000 miles.

Good night, all.

404 I've been a person who goes to the doctor for about 6 months. For the previous 20 years I've been a person who doesn't go to the doctor for any reason.

I'm already cynical. Every time someone says "Someone will call you in a few days" I immediately right then and there plan out what to do if no one calls me in a few days.

Me: *hands paper* Here is a fax that someone told me they would fax to you, but did not. That is why I am here in person.
Desk person: OK, someone will call you today or tomorrow.
Me: Could you do me a favor and make a copy of it for me?

Oh I get you BC. Won't bore all of you w/ all the details but was sent to urologist by my worthless gp in May. Tests, oh no, we need more tests. Finally they decide I have prostate cancer.

Well you need scans to see if it's spread. OK, more delay. Great news, no cancer spreading. But the doc says...you are loaded w/ arthritis. Jules and I just burst out laughing...yeah I think we know that part.

Finally got the seeding in Nov, will find out later this month if it worked. Wish me luck.
