Though people are saying in the comments that the problems are relatively rare and you shouldn't worry unless you are rolling out 10,000 systems to a corporate environment in which case you have other things to worry about, like users.

It's been a long time but there were times way back when the software I was developing kept me in often from 9AM till 3AM the next morning.

Then I had to drive home for 50 or so minutes and get 3-4 hours sleep and head back to work again.

The investment paid off!

18 I got this laptop i bought recently that's an absolute dog. ThinkPad. i7 8650U processor. Decent enough 256gb nvme ssd. 32gb ram at ddr4-2400. Runs like a slug in cold honey. I even did a complete wipe and factory reset on it, thinking maybe i screwed something up on it somehow. Nope. Just sucks. Which is weird, because it should run ok with those specs for everyday work. Instead it takes fifteen seconds just to open up file explorer. My over five year old ThinkPad runs faster. Bleh.

While cleaning out my many long unopened boxes and crates, I encountered printouts of computer generated patterns for the endsheets of handmade books. Some were dull or uninteresting, but others showed promise.

These were generated through exploratory efforts on my part using MATLAB code and its plotting and printing functions. As I will revisit the bookmaking craft in the near future, I do hope that I had saved this generating code and also that I had followed my usual practice of annotating it as I created it.

I would consider it a luxury to be able to have 12 hours of peace to resolve a single problem. I never get more than 5-10 minutes of uninterrupted time. I have to resolve problems in 5-minute snippets over many days and weeks.

I thought it might be, it's only 256GB. Toshiba KXG50ZNV256G, seems like the general consensus is that it's an ok drive that has a huge range of performance.... maybe i just got a dud.

M2 ssds are cheap enough i might just slap a new one in to see.

It's typical. Instead of allowing actual reformation of the criminal, and fostering a culture that rewards climbing up out of the mire of criminality slowly and painfully, you just seal the records and go "what criminal? Nah, it'll be fine", and short circuit the actual process of reform so that it never really occurs.

In the lab in Africa, before the IBM PCs, we had an HP80 with a separate chassis for the massive 5MB hard drive! And it was partitioned into individual 1MB pieces so as to look like 4 floppy drives. Beautiful power supply.

So, our power was restored Sunday late in the afternoon. 50 hours of no electric. Then, last night about 8:30 it goes out again. Right up the street a line caught a tree on fire. So... another couple of hours without power.

I have a feeling we'll be experiencing random outages as this sort of crap happens and then has to be resolved.

Oh... and the property owner where the tree is located? Yea, there's a whole line of pines with our utility lines running through them. He's going to get a visit from his neighbor with a suggestion to the cut the goddamn things down.

129 I don't know what this Verge dude is on about. I've been pretty happy with Roku. They put an ad on the home screen, usually for a show from a streaming service, but it's nonintrusive and doesn't get in the way of the menu or the experience. And his complaint about not having an index of shows across streaming services doesn't hold water -- Roku's built-in search has had that for years now. Maybe they'll change their experience for the worse, but for now, it's pretty great, and easy to use.
