The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Alright Portland, I’m done with you. I’m over. This has gotta stop, OK? I work right here a lot during the day. Well, look what happened last night.” Real estate developer Dustin Michael Miller

Quote II

"Any time you have evidence of private entities coordinating with federal agents to strip Americans of their rights, the public should be alarmed and demanding answers and action," Aidan Johnston, federal affairs director for Gun Owners of America

Quote III

“This is a serious attack on the Constitution by a federal agency. A shameful case of weaponization of a government agency for political purposes and suppression of the truth.” Elon Musk

Yikes, the insurance premium for collision and OTC are probably staggering.

When it comes to assisted driving systems, General Motors' Super Cruise is hard to beat. The hands-free highway driving setup combines LiDAR scans of 400,000 miles of the nation's highways as well as active sensor readings to deliver a seamless form of semi-autonomous driving. Ultra Cruise, a superior system that GM claims will be able to handle 95% of driving, is set to debut on the $300,000 Celestiq. The Detroit automaker has now detailed how the system will work.

In short, it uses an army of cameras and sensors working together to ensure the car doesn't hit anything. The fancy phrase they're using for that is "sensor fusion." The sensors include several short and long-range radars, a LiDAR, and a number of cameras.

Reason #172 why I like Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).

DeSantis Denounces Florida Legislator's Blogger Registry Proposal

Update (1845ET): During his “State of the State” news conference Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis denounced state Sen. Jason Brodeur’s bill, which would require bloggers to register with the state

As the New York Post reports, DeSantis distanced himself from his fellow Republican’s proposal, saying it was “not anything I’ve ever supported," while adding that “I don’t control every single bill that has been filed.”

Sen. Jason Brodeur of Lake Mary should read the constitution. And if he doesn't comprehend the First Amendment he should sit down with a Civics expert. Fvcking RINO. What's next registering commenters?

Something tells me this won't be as innocent as it is advertised.

New Ford patent would lock out owners for missed payments, allow cars to be repossessed remotely

Ford filed for a patent on a new technological system that would allow the automaker to lock out owners from their cars for missed payments. The patent would also allow cars to be repossessed remotely – even enabling self-driving vehicles to drive themselves to a repo lot.

Ford Global Technologies applied for a patent regarding "systems and methods to repossess a vehicle" on Aug. 20, 2021. The application with the United States Patent Office was formally published on Feb. 23, 2023.

Johor Bahru, Malaysia has an interesting dress code.

A 60-year-old businesswoman was baffled when she was barred from using the elevator at the Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG) here for apparently dressing inappropriately.

The woman, who only wanted to be known as Tan, said she wore a pastel yellow long dress that extended to her mid-calf and covered shoes when she turned up at the council for business licence matters around 11am on Wednesday (Feb 15).

"A female staff member at the front counter told me to head to the second floor to meet an official regarding my inquiry and I was told to obtain a visitor’s pass from the security guard beforehand.

"I was surprised when the security guard refused to give me a pass, saying that my dress was not long enough to head to the upper levels of the building.

Hollywood isn't dead, it just smells funny. Shocker that a wholesome movie is a financial success. Not.

After only two weeks in release, a little Christian film called Jesus Revolution has grossed $30.5 million, which is a better domestic take than five of this year’s Best Picture nominees. In fact, it’s a better domestic haul than four of those Best Picture nominees combined.

And only an idiot is surprised by this news.

Someone will be looking for a new job. On their resume...... Genius Award Winner.

FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — The Fresno Police Department received a call around 8:30 a.m. about a man being inside a bank in Fresno that was not open for business.

When police arrived at the Bank of the West on Fresno St. at Van Ness Ave. in downtown Fresno they thought the man had broken into the building.

After investigating and talking to the man they learned the keys were left in the front door overnight and the man let himself inside.

Obstacles. What obstacles? Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

As Jason Stoffer wheels himself around his unfinished home south of Eureka — with musical instruments on the walls and a miniature grand piano next to the kitchen — he and his wife, Lori, point to the chimney they installed themselves, the insulation in the walls and the hundreds of boards he cut since they started building two years ago. Using old climbing gear to set up pulleys and a little bit of “redneck engineering,” they’ve gotten much of the hard work done, although the prolonged project means their three kids (ages 9, 11, and 13) are still sleeping on couches downstairs until the bedrooms are finished.

Building a home from scratch would challenge anyone, which makes Jason’s efforts all the more impressive.

That was a talking point about autonomous cars a decade ago. "They'll handle 95% of the driving for you."

But the 5% they can't handle is the hardest stuff. Which is now left to the human driver who has no practice doing even the basic stuff.

I was watching Piers Morgan's interview with Andrew Tate and one thing that stuck out...

Morgan was complaining that someone had posted online that they were going to murder his kid. The police had told him that they couldn't figure out who it was and were closing the case.

Tate responded that if someone had made fun of a tranny on the same forum the anonymous poster would already be in jail. And...he's not wrong. The British police are apparently very good at finding and arresting commenters for "hate speech"

70 Watching the new Chris Rock show. He talks about his ex-wife, how she's as rich as he is. I looked up Malaak Compton. "She is the founder of the Angelrock Project which promotes the well-being of a society and its people." That there sounds like a highly focused mission. Anyway, her net worth is $20M. C'mon man, she's a humanitarian; she earned it.

73 Do we only have a choice of either living in a police state or a criminal state?

We had fewer laws, less monitoring, and less crime a few years ago. And if you go back to the 50s WAY less crime.

So the answer is no. We can choose a third way but as of right now almost no political office holders are interesting in that option.

My efforts to get in some time at the gun range were thwarted today. Apparently, showing up alone and needing to rent a gun is a red flag, in which case they require either a conceal carry permit or a permit to purchase, neither of which I had.

So, the lesson, I guess, is, if you're going to shoot the place up, take along a friend.

So much for Free Speech in the U.K. No wonder we kicked those lousy Lobsterbacks outta here. The number quoted by Murray shocked the interviewer.

Townes Van Zandt singer-songwriter.

-----------

Had never heard of him. The finale episode of the period TV series "Hell on Wheels" (damn, need to rewatch that sometime -- quite good) ended with a very moving scene involving the protagonist ... while this beautiful, haunting, and fitting song played.

I was able to soon identify it as "Waitin' Around To Die" by one Townes Van Zandt. Found several slightly different versions on YouTube initially, but frustratingly not the one from the episode.

Eventually found it here: https://tinyurl.com/59epeah7
[Sounds quite biographical -- and he had a tragic life, dying of a drug overdose relatively young IIRC.]

A very moving video & version is found here (with wife and old, black friend whom he brings to tears): https://tinyurl.com/ycxjefry

Remember, the Democrats knew of all the videos Tucker showed and still lied to support their narrative. Yet, they continued with the J6 lies.
What stands out for me is the corrupt DC judges and what they have done to ignore basic rights of the jailed. I naively figured at least federal judges would be honest. Oh well. But the videos sure highlight the lies of the last 26 months and sadly those that still are in jail over 2 years later.

If it was the range where you took your class a few weeks ago and rented a pistol, they should have had you in their system. If you don't already own a gun and you don't have a shooting buddy, it's kind of a chicken and egg problem.

I did mention I had taken the class, but that didn't matter. I've put in an application for a permit to purchase, but that takes a week or so, and I had hoped to go this week, since I'm off.

Apparently either the person handling certain documents or their internal mail person (didn't quite catch who and the lady answering the phone sounded embarrassed about it) went on extended leave and our payee document didn't get processed. Double bonus: We no longer will have to work with the incompetent woman that was handling our case for the last few months, because she doesn't handle current recipients, only applicants.

Buy something with an absolute minimum of electronic geegaws and displays. Speed Queen commercial grade will last you a lifetime. Same with Maytag and Whirlpool commercial grade stuff. Same thing as you'd see in a laundrymat, sans the coin-op box.

Lowes sells an LG commercial washer (+/- $1,200), that seems to fit the bill, but I know nothing of it's reputation as a commercial grade machine.

Anything that's NOT an agitator in a top loading washing machine is a gimmick. Avoid, till other people have spent their $ experimenting with such over the next 20 years.

204 Hi there, Horde.

Off topic, but I am requesting help with remembering the name of a book and the woman who wrote it.

She was a Jewish lady, American I think.

She wrote it soon after 9/11.

She had her eyes opened as to the Islamic/Jihadic threat.

What made her interesting to me is that she turned to researching this, as a "white" open source researcher. She ended up doing some research for the feds, and then told them that she had taken her research as far as it could go using just open sources.

She then created some sort of research group looking into the Islamic / Jihadic threat.

This was a few years after 9/11.

Does this jog anyones memory?

Thank you.

Over a series of days scattered across the past couple weeks, I have removed a failed and sagged-out set of wooden gates, and have set the steel posts and fabricated the steel gate-frames (98" width, combined), built in situ between the primary posts.

This ensures a true and proper fit in all dimensions, with very consistent, parallel gaps between the frames and posts, and where the frames meet in the middle.

When completed, I'll submit a series of photos with narrative, to the Bodging/Hobby Thread.

I cut up one nut enough to bang the bolt out, then went at another one. That damned little wheel just flew apart. Defective Chicom shit. It broke in 3 pieces, and wrung itself apart right at the arbor. A chunk hit my face shield.

259 Apparently I made the whole thing up about Lefty in some altered state of conciousness.

from wiki

George Strait recorded a Sanger D. Shafer song called "Lefty's Gone" on the album Something Special. In addition, Willie Nelson's 1977 album, To Lefty From Willie was a tribute to Frizzell and consisted entirely of cover versions of Frizzell songs. Frizzell was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is also in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame along with his son Crockett Frizzell. Frizzell ranked number 31 on CMT's 2003 40 Greatest Men of Country Music.

Fellow Texan Roy Orbison was a devout fan of Frizzell's sound, and in 1988, as a part of the Traveling Wilburys, he chose the name "Lefty Wilbury" to honor his musical hero.
...
In 2019, Frizzell's single "Long Black Veil" was selected by the U.S. Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

There's a lot of welds, and they all need to be dressed with the grinder, before painting. Wouldn't be necessary if I were a better welder, but...

...maybe by time I'm done with this project, I'll have upped my skills a few percentages?

262 ballad of pancho and lefty is a truly haunting song. By the end, you understand that the teller of the tale (Lefty) feels that Pancho had the far better fate of the two, dying quickly and young. While Lefty drifted off into a lifelong haze of self loathing and cheap hotels.

I pulled a new wheel out of the pack, and inspected it closely. Put it in the tool and spun it by hand. It was warped slightly. You could see a slight wobble.

The 3" wheels I used to get (from NAPA store, as well as Grainger and the local hardware) were very tough, and would take all kinds of abuse. I'm going to get some more, and get some made in USA stuff.

I learned what would wear those little wheels fast. Rubber hose. Think old style radiator hose type, with some sort of steel liner -- it was 2" suction hose on an old sprayer. Hose would not come off, and so I took the cut-off wheel to slit it.

I watched the diameter of that little wheel shrink before my eyes cutting a slit through that material.

270 Some of the thread patterns on old Ford tractors are history. Purchasing those long control arms, well, you can't purchase the steering control box for an 8N, then newer model will bolt on perfectly but those long control arms won't fit.

They won't fit because it's inverted. Took the arms to be re-treaded but the modern die and the old one are two different animals and those arms are expensive.

After much studying the schematics and bloody knuckles. I discovered, as easy as turning on the ignition, that one can take the right control arm turn it upside down and install it on the left - easy peasy, same for the right.

Only problem, the zerks are upside down and the arm must be loosed from the control box arm to grease it.

The brand new control box came from England and the arms for it came from the scrap iron place in town..

That reminds me of a rotted tire on a wheel rim from some old pull type harrow. Tire was rotted, rubber was hard as hell, and the bead would not budge. Stuck hard.

This was probably 20 years ago. My father and I wrestled with that that. Ended up taking a drill, and boring a big ass hole in the sidewall near the rim. May have used a hole saw. Then, took a metal cutting blade in the sawzall, and just cut the tire off, leaving a chunk of bead still on the rim.

Old tire was off, but now to get that bead off. Tried the cut off wheels and grinders. Didn't go too fast. I think we ended up just power burning it with the O/A torch!

Assembly at the front of the tractor as if it was easy as the manual said. When I figured out the swap sides it was 1,2,3.

Indeed. But behind every one of those perfect beads, was his highly advanced knowledge of the materials being joined, their thickness, and the right settings on the machine for the perfect penetration into the metals (without blowing right through them), the wire feed rate, or the correct stick welding rod, amperages, and many etc.s in the bargain.

By time he struck the first arc, he had all of those material questions well solved, and so set himself up for success, and perfection.

OK, never had much to do with the old Ford tractors. The vertical arms are Pitman arms. On that Ford system, one pushes forward as the other pulls back, I think. Steering box might be planetary, a relic from Model T days. The long arms going forward are "steering reach rods" aka "drag links". And the short arms attached to the steering king pins are, quaintly enough, "steering arms".

There is definitely a "right" sound to a properly set up welding arc; a steady sizzling sound, like bacon frying. The metal is being deposited at the same rate as the puddle in the parent metal is being pushed along the joint.

Welding is actually really fun to do, if you don't wind up wearing blobs of slag in your clothing. I am seriously thinking about buying one of these new multi-process welding machines that can do stick, gas MIG, DC TIG, and AC Tig for aluminum. They are computerized, and can make automatic adjustments on the fly as your rate of progress with the business end changes. And they are becoming quite cheap. They use inverter technology instead of heavy iron and copper transformers, which avoids a huge chunk of the cost of traditional welding machines.
