Alphabet, Google's Parent Corporation, Slashes 12,000 Jobs Globally; Microsoft Chops 10,000
Media Hails "Biden Miracle Economy"

The 12,000 jobs Google is eliminating represent 6% of its total workforce.

In his memo, Pichai cited a changing "economic reality" as he announced the layoffs, writing: "Over the past two years we've seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today," NBC also reports.

Economic reality? I thought "we never had it so good, Jack!"

Microsoft cut 10,000, about 5% of its workforce, its largest reduction in eight years.

JustTheNews wonders how this can be -- Lunchbox Joe says the economy is doing great, and Big Tech bet big on Lunchbox Joe.

The wave of terminations is undercutting the president's optimistic message about the economy.

"My first two years in office were the two strongest years for job growth on record," Biden said in a recent statement according to CNBC. "We still have more work to do, but we're clearly moving in the right direction, and there's more breathing room in store for American workers and families."

...

In November 2022, Meta, previously called Facebook, laid off 11,000 jobs. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a letter to employees that the company would be cut down by 13%.

...

It is estimated that multiple tech companies, including Amazon and Coinbase, have laid off more than 60,000 employees over the last year combined, according to CNBC.

"Well," you're all saying, "this is such unambiguously bad economic news, there's no way even the leftwing propaganda media would try to sugarcoat it and put a 'Funemployment' type spin on it!"

Where do you guys all work, the the Corporation for Saying Things That Are Wrong All of the Time?

You asked for a miracle, I give you the NBC:

NBClayoffs.jpg

Tech employers are rapidly slashing jobs ahead of a potential recession, but even the industry's newest workers remain largely unbothered.

The recent wave of tech layoffs has begun to unwind the industry's hiring spree during the coronavirus pandemic, when millions of Americans rode the "Great Resignation" into new jobs and careers. While the nation's historically hot labor market is fitfully cooling down, many of the least experienced tech workers say their new skills and connections put them on firmer footing in case the economy deteriorates this year.

The weeks and months ahead will test their optimism. One basis for it, in the meantime, is that "upskilling" has already paid off for many.

133 I'm a tech employee as well, this is my anecdotal report:

The billion dollar tech company I work for is quietly laying off reams of people, yet my conservative boss is likely to be promoted when we start the new fiscal year (in March)

The people that are getting laid off have been considered worthless dead weight or bloat who have brought literally nothing to the company's bottom line: revenue

Because I actually work for a living, the team Im part of (largely non-woke and conservative) have actionably proven not only how much money we save but also how much money we're able to bring in. A lot of the work we're doing were formally tasked to agencies, who were for lack of a better phrase, incompetent useless woke buttfuckers. They basically overcharged for everything and gave us basically fuck all in return.

When we took the same workload and showed how we outperformed these agencies at ridiculous levels for only a fraction of the cost, it finally started to dawn on executives that maybe they might be getting hosed out their asses by hiring these diverse and woke agencies.

But we did have a few people who completely made quality of life changes into another line of work where they could spend more time with their families. However they did much better planning and are therefore largely happy with what they did.

This is true. There is definitely nuance to it. If you're REALLY highly skilled, even in the best times, it's hard to find a job because you're not really a widget. You might only fit in a few thousand positions in the whole world, and most of those are already filled.

Also, if you want to maximize your earnings, if you're a Google or Microsoft level developer, what you say is exactly right. But if you lower your standards on cash and bennies, you can work pretty much anywhere you want.

No problem, we had to deal with beneficiary deeds recently regarding parents so I thought I would mention it. Good way to avoid costly probate on real property in an estate if set up correctly but the attorney that drafted them mentioned something about a 5 year rule where the beneficiary deed in essence became a transferral of some sort of the property. Personal claim to fame: while blocking shelves in a grocery store as a lad, I managed to get a whole row to shift and knocked a glass something or other behind a display of salad dressing. This was in the before times when they would make a display by stacking boxes and cutting the front of the box out so you could see what was inside.

In the process of moving the display I tipped it over, onto my back (I was bent over and sliding it toward me. I'm smarter now, somewhat).

27 bottles of salad dressing broke. This was also the days when for some reason people bought Russian dressing. It was mostly that and some Italian--super oily. I ended up in a massive lake of oil and broken glass, wearing very flat soled and slippery chuck T's. I was eventually extracted by grabbing a broom handle and getting towed/water skiied out of the mess.

259 The younger daughter and I just made a pineapple upside down cake. Fresh pineapple, cut into 1/4 arcs so you can lay a nice geometric pattern with amarena cherries, is the way to go.

Then, you use a can of pineapple juice and the amarena juice (from the cherries you took out of the jar) as your "water" in the cake mix...and vegan butter works with the brown sugar to still give you a beautiful (albeit slightly wetter - thus fresh pineapple is better than the very wet jarred) top...

318 Marcus T,

It is not technically a shutdown but simply means that the US govt regardless of appropriations bills does not have permission to sell more securities.

Supposedly, the Treasury is shifting accounts with already obtained cash and the like as they do frequently with this sort of thing but the argument is that the US will be in technical default if it does not make interest payments to current bond holders and will have to curtail spending to whatever government revenues are still coming in.

It is more like a soft squishy deadline than a hard one and how the Treasury shifts funds back and forth is an opaque process involving often obscure accounts.

The House could technically only pass an increased limit that requires spending cuts by the executive branch of already appropriated money or it can negotiate and change the whole omnibus deal. However, GOPe members are already discussing using a discharge petition with the Dem opposition to get a clean debt limit passed.

I think Valve suffered so much in creating Source and HL2 at the same time that they said never again and have stuck to it.

Such that now the fan remake of the original HL (which is pretty entertaining, the remake) is in Unreal engine. Blasphemy but unavoidable.

Why does it seem like the person at the head of the line has never paid for groceries and was apparently shocked to find that it costs money that you now have to pay?

And then there's the lady who INSISTS on scanning her phone even though it clearly isn't working.

Either you use canned engines (Unreal or Unity) or you Ship of Theseus it where every new game replaces some major subsystem (usually graphics tech to keep up with new video cards/console generations and a few other things).

And another $2.5 trillion in mortgage backed securities... which never 'unwound'.

They will just print more money anyway... which of course, will add to inflation... but they would have done that with the debt increase.... as there is STILL OVER $5 TRILLION in debt, that they could sell, but there are no buyers for it.

I know what it is to worry as a child, the insecurity of unpaid bills and fear of anxious, angry adults.

It is an abomination what we have allowed in this nation, allowing real jobs sent overseas, paying the same prices as if those same goods were made here, sentencing our children to dependence on foreigners whims and foreign corruption, envy and vengeance. We had enough of that already here.

442 The Fed Res has not been able to sell US debt for quite some time. They hold $5.5 Trillion of government debt on their balance sheet.
Posted by: Romeo13
------
Gets complicated but the debt limit applies to US Treasury not to the Fed. The Treasury markets the different negotiable securities, T bills and bonds, and the Fed buys them along with others such as individuals, investors, and so on. Hitting the debt limit for FedGov is a specific amount passed by Congress regarding debt issued by Treasury so essentially the Treasury does not have authority once the debt limit is reached to sell new debt to the Fed, investors, or anyone else. So to meet spending, the Treasury has to shift around its various virtual piggie banks and check the sofa for loose change in order to write checks to government beneficiaries and so forth and most importantly pay interest on debt.
