Tonight's ONT is Out Of Order

Out of order.jpg

Sorry folks. Gingy had a hysterectomy this morning. She's fine, just very sore. We had planned for her to take a nap after dinner, time which I would use to write the ONT, but she's restless and I need to be with her. So here are the links I was going to feature on the ONT, but we'll have to omit the usual commentary.

I heard a rumble in my basement, so I went to check it out. It turns out a tower of boxes fell over.

One of them was really old, from three moves ago. It had some fun stuff in it. A bunch of copper coins, some Roman ones, and an oaken box I made with my dad, where he taught me dovetail joints. My older brother vandalized it by scrawling "R" Wuz Here on the underside of the lid.

The second broken box was newer and had a bunch of ammo in it that I forgot after this move, but it's only six months, so it's fine.

The third box was intact, so I left it alone. Hopefully it explodes sometime soon and reveals more treasures.

In the oilfield, you have to park facing the exit of the lease. If the order is given to evacuate the lease, the last thing they want is service hands smashing their vehicles into one another backing out of a parking space in a panic.

In a parking lot, I like to find a place where I can pull through to park in getaway position. If it means walking a few more steps, so be it.

I was looking at family pictures with my half-sister yesterday, and I was struck by how much our mom looked as a young mother like a young lady I knew who was getting clean from heroin. They had a similar build, and similar affect. IIRC they also spoke like each other.

Our mom was an alcoholic and died of liver failure and the young lady I knew ran her car under a dump truck and killed herself and her little boy, probably from falling asleep at the wheel.
I have sympathy for addicts, especially the ones trying to stay clean and sober. I really regret it for their kids and family and friends who cared enough to stay, and will have a giant hole in their lives.

God knows they make horrible chaos of the world and screw up everything they touch. The most tragic are the ones who are aware of it.

Hope Gingy starts feeling better soon. They don't do hysterectomies as much as they did in the past, and the procedure is a lot different. She should recover fairly quickly compared to the women of my mother's generation. Take care of her and don't worry about us. (Picks up my sharpest Gingher scissors.)

It never ceases to amaze me that people will sit and wait for someone else to walk to their car, load everything they just bought, scratch their ass, adjust their mirrors, apply makeup, write a novel, and generally futz around, all to avoid walking an extra 20'. The people at Costco are especially bad about this. You can park, walk past them, and go into the store, and they're still sitting there, idling.

The real blessing about my parish. The church has a school behind it. So, I can drive through the school parking lot to the back of the church parking lot. No cursing and bitching at other churchgoers who are mostly leaving from the front, while I whip out the back. Yeah, I'm a good Christian.

115 Mark Hemingway may write well, but he doesn't know shit about parking. I drove 4x4 Suburbans for 15 years, then F350 crew-cab long-bed 4x4 pickups for another 20 years, until I couldn't climb into one any longer. If one knows how, backing a 23'-long pickup is easy. I didn't have a backup camera or distance sensors; big mirrors, properly adjusted, on either side are enough. Floodlights wired into backup circuit surely help, both for illumination and as a warning to others that I'm coming. The fact is that turning a truck with a 172" wheelbase demands a lot of room for one end or the other to swing a big arc, and if one backs in, the rear of the truck turns nearly in place while the front swings 90* until I'm backing straight in. If I try to nose in, I have to swing way right to turn left (even with turn signals, some jerk will try to pass)... I recall a pedestrian in Chicago, mouth agape in amazement, after I parallel-parked my F350 in front of the Twisted Spoke on first try with about 3' clear at either end.

OTOH, pricks gotta prick. I got a parking ticket for backing in 20 years ago in Royal Oak MI which I refused to pay. I won't go back, either.

116 The worst part of people backing OUT of a parking spot, such as at the grocery store.

Are the ones that gotta fumble for 5 minutes or so, with an endless list of fidgety things to DO, before actually stepping on the brake, shifting into reverse, checking the mirrors and surroundings, and getting the hell on with the process.

Women aren't the only guilty party here, but most the guys ain't carrying purses or messenger bags, either.

Had to do a parallel parking move at a Yuma, AZ Denny's restaurant. Did it in one, and got some applause from folks there in the parking lot.

The semi-trucks with the 53 ft. trailers are easier to back up than your pickup truck with a 10 ft. utility trailer. Shorter the trailer, the faster it'll jackknife. Challenge on the big trucks though, are the restricted sight lines. Driver has to set up the move on that slow, pull-ahead, just before hitting reverse. Bad set-up? Bad results.

One thing I do whenever I back out of any spot, however, is turn my hazard lights on. Those small white lights at the back of my car never cut it for me. A little practice and backing is no problem. Forget that camera and learn to use your mirrors. It will improve your judgement for many other driving situations.

226 CBD. A 53' with the carriage set all the way forward in the SWB "manuverability" notches, will still be a magnitude of order smoother in reverse than an F-150 with a standard design, 10' utility trailer.

Soon as the hitch connection to trailer axle distance is shorter than the motive vehicle's wheelbase, things is gonna get snappy, fast!

This is why the Port of Galveston now prohibits cargo/luggage trailers being towed behind the various box-buses and Transit/Sprinter and other passenger vans. Too many of the drivers of those could NOT safely work the trailer in the busy as hell port facilities.

Nah, I'm right.

The shorter trailer can swing in more degrees of arc per linear ft. of straight-back motive vehicle movement, than the longer trailer. The classic F-150 w/ 10' utility trailer can go full-jackknife in less distance than the truck's own wheelbase. 53' behind a standard-ish, twin-screw Semi, ain't gotta get turned much more than about 20 degrees if the tractor is motoring straight-back.

Now, start in with that steering wheel funny business, and things change. A mediocre semi-driver will still usually out-manuver the F-150 rig driver, who seldom.. SELDOM has to maneuver into tight bays or tricky turns. That's seldom, as with many of them, never.

Read about Kennedy's 1963 Community Mental Health Act that created local mental health facilities so that crazy people could live in their communities and visit the mental health facilities locally.

Then read about how Medicaid (passed in 1965) barred federal funding from being spent in/on mental hospitals housing more than X patients. Guess what happened to mental hospitals then?

Reagan was involved, but he had very little to do with it overall. That's the left passing the blame because they know what happened and want to pin it on the (R)s, same as always.

The most ornery thing I've ever backed is one of the little U-Haul car carriers where you only pull the car's front wheels up onto the hauler.

You can barely see it to begin with, and it's so short that it is immediately in the wrong place as soon as you back up the slightest bit and catch a glimpse of it in your side mirrors.

347 Oh, and you can't back it hardly at all (I think the legal documents said three feet) while the car is loaded onto it because the front wheels of the car being hauled will shift slightly and create another joint in the system and make everything wacky.

If you have to back up you've got to unload the towed car. I backed just a bit to see what would happen and there was a lot of odd torque happening immediately. Weird, black-magic stuff was going on so I stopped.

So he gave the cake he purchased to her.

457 If there is one traffic affliction I suffer from of late, it is of the driver who will attempt a 180 degree change of direction, mid block, and will subsequently stop traffic in both directions until he or she can unfuck his or her self, rather than just going around the block and letting traffic flow.
Posted by: gourmand du jour at January 12, 2023 11:23 PM (jTmQV)

A nice feature of traffic here in Arizona is that normally U-turns are permitted from left turn bays on divided boulevards, which most of the arterial surface streets here are. There are some intersections with signs that prohibit U-turns, but it's usually for an obvious reason.
