THE MORNING RANT: Red State Legislatures Take Aim at Tenure; You Tube’s Banning of “Climate Skeptic” Video Results in Massive Viewing of It on Rumble (with an assist from AOSHQ)

Abolishing or modifying university tenure is among the agenda items for the Texas legislature, which has begun its biennial session this week. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick controls the agenda, and he has committed to “reforming” tenure.

Patrick also revisited his controversial push to “reform” tenure in higher education. In February, Patrick was more blunt, saying he would end tenure in public universities and colleges to combat the teaching of critical race theory. University administrators have said this would make it difficult to recruit and retain world-class faculty.

The media is responding as you would expect.

Conservatives Take Aim at Tenure For University Professors [AP – 01/08/2023]

Tenure advocates are bracing for the possibility of new threats as lawmakers return to statehouses around the country. The trend reflects how conservative scrutiny of instruction related to race, gender and sexuality has extended from schools to higher education.

Dan Patrick’s Plan to Abolish Tenure Would Hurt Texas Universities [Dallas Morning News – 12/07/2022]

Patrick’s notion that tenure is a state-sponsored gift to leftist professors who indoctrinate gullible students is an exaggeration. And even if it were as bad as he thinks it is, attacking tenure is the wrong way to go.

If tenure once served a purpose (and I’d be glad to have a “Chesterton’s Fence” discussion about it), those days are past, and it is time for tenure to be abolished. Reasons include:

1) It may deter current professors from engaging in left wing classroom advocacy.
2) It may deter other radicals from even taking jobs with public universities.
3) Conservatives are effectively boxed out of university hiring now anyway, so conservatives who don’t pretend to be leftists have little chance of ever attaining tenure at all.

…and most importantly

4) Tenure effectively no longer even exists for conservatives and non-woke professors, so leftist professors should not be protected by tenure either.

Like so much of the dual justice system in America, which protects those on the left and persecutes those on the right, tenure no longer protects the job security of professors when the woke mob comes after them. Here are a few examples:

Princeton’s Joshua Katz criticized the university’s proposal to make up for historical racism by giving black professors higher salaries and longer sabbaticals than white professors. He also condemned campus activists in a Quillette piece, referring to them as “a small local terrorist organization that made life miserable for the students (including the many black students) who did not agree with its members’ demands.”

This language outraged some on the campus left, and Professor Katz’s article, titled “A Declaration of Independence by a Princeton Professor,” was condemned by Princeton’s president, Christopher Eisgruber.

A university spokesman—not the president—went further by suggesting that Professor Katz might be subjected to some sort of investigation for his words.

Indeed, Princeton investigated Katz, and despite his tenure, he was fired for a consensual relationship that occurred 15 years earlier with a (legally adult) student. I’m not defending that relationship, but the sequence of events was a solid warning to other tenured professors at Princeton, reminding them that disallowed ideas will be punished with punitive investigations in search of fireable wrongdoing.

There are plenty more cases…

A tenured professor at Central Michigan University was reading a 1995 case about speech codes, and he didn’t use a euphemism for a certain word (which starts with the letter “n” when directly quoting the Judge’s opinion in the speech code case. He was fired for using that word in a classroom. Tenured Professor Fired for Accurately Quoting Leading Campus Speech Code Case [Reason – Eugene Volokh – 9/03/2020]

Then there’s Berea College in Kentucky, which fired a tenured professor to placate the woke mob. The reason to justify his dismissal was “incompetence.” Apparently, only an incompetent would dare to upset the social justice warriors, thus his tenure did not protect him. A Christian College Fires a Dedicated, Tenured Professor — Why? [National Review – 7/09/2021]

There’s more, but university tenure is already dead for conservatives and free thinkers at American colleges. Let’s reward the left for their attacks on conservative speech by denying them the protection of tenure too.

”Climate Realism” Video That Was Banned By You Tube Has Explosion of Rumble Viewers After AOSHQ Feature

[I have no affiliation with nor connection to the Heartland Institute. I’m just extremely passionate about the threat to civilization from the Sustainable Organic Church of the Carbon Apocalypse. Heartland’s “Climate Realism” operation is a scientific goldmine of information to counter the climate panic, and I have found it very useful for my writing and advocacy. - Buck]

Here is something that is personally fulfilling, but it also speaks to the strength of Ace of Spades HQ and its well informed army of “morons.” We successfully punched back just a little against Monster Tech and their censorship of unapproved viewpoints.

My post four days ago was about YouTube shutting down the Heartland Institute's channel just minutes before they were going live with prominent "climate realist" Judith Curry, a scientist who rejects the draconian solutions demanded by the climate mafia. Heartland Institute’s Anthony Watts (www.wattsupwiththat.com) was the host. Moments before airtime You Tube shut down Heartland’s channel.

In that post, I embedded a Rumble video of the banned live stream.

Jim Lakely of Heartland notified me later that the Rumble video was at only 4k views the morning of my post. It increased to over 50k views by the end of that day. In his words, “Amazing!” It’s now at 146k views.

In gratitude to the horde, he asked me to pass along a promo especially for AOS readers for The Heartland Institute's Climate Realism conference in Orlando on Feb 23 – 25. He says the code “MORON” will save $250 off of the $500 price, which also includes six meals. This is the link.

I’ll be there because I am very excited to hear (and meet) Steve Milloy and Anthony Watts, among many other great scientists pushing back against the climate hoax and fighting the scam that global elites are trying to pull. I’d love to meet any Ace of Spades readers who attend.

Probably true.

But has the world-class faculty gotten us so far? The universities are destroyed, especially the humanities. The sciences are not far behind.

Then what is the right way to go? Let's take the opening and say that it *is* as bad as he thinks it is. If attacking tenure - that is, being able to fire the professors - is not the answer, then what *is* the answer? How does one bring accountability into the system while retaining tenure?

Maybe limits on administrators would be more effective.

Something like, the minimum allowable ratio of administrator to student must be 1/50. Anything more than that, and the pay of the president of the University is given to a randomized food shelter for 3 years.

22 "Academic Freedom" is another term coopted by the Left to suit their agenda.

Traditionally, "Academic Freedom" meant that a professor was free to pursue their own research without fear of the administrators coming down on them if they didn't like it.

Now it's used as a similar club as "tenure" to protect faculty from teaching whatever they want in the classroom, regardless of whether it's true or not.

It's a big part, but not the only part. I've advocated that if my institution was so keen on research, we'd become a pure research institution and drop the instruction of students. I disagree. The automotive finance company doesn't co-sign your load.

But you can go bankrupt on a car loan. Student debt should not be special. It should be dishargeable in bankruptcy, just like any other. No more special treatment for student loans.

Interest will shoot the moon and be more like credit card rates. The lender will suddenly care - and care a *lot* - about things like your field of study and grades. The cost and availability of money will rapidly turn over. The amount of money for college will collapse, and price will collapse right with it. A ton of schools will go bankrupt and fail. The survivors will either be top-tier with limitless endowments or will be a *lot* leaner with a lot less bullshit when they come out the other side.

I recently read in the Wall Street Journal that Stanford University had more administrative staff and faculty than it did students. Specifically, there were 15,750 administrators, 2,288 faculty members, and 16,937 students. The paid help of 18,038 (administrators plus faculty) outnumbered the customers (students) by 1,101. That gave me an idea for a stunning administrative reorganization: give each student a paid concierge—an academic butler, if you will—to help navigate the pain of collegiate living in Palo Alto.

I’m not defending that relationship, but the sequence of events was a solid warning to other tenured professors at Princeton, reminding them that disallowed ideas will be punished with punitive investigations in search of fireable wrongdoing

When I taught at a college a number of my colleagues did the same thing and the standard line was "its a perk of the job"

145 I don't get the idol worshipping of Zelensky. He isn't the hero people make him out to be. His greatest accomplishment thus far is how quickly he can fleece US taxpayers for billions while insulting us saying it isn't enough.

The latest proposal is to put a statute of Zelensky in Congress, along with the statutes of Winston Churchill and Vaclav Havel.

Ukraine is a "democracy" in exactly the same sense that Russia is a "democracy" - the outward forms of democracy are preserved, but no real political opposition is allowed.

150 I have no idea how widespread it is. I know of several student/professor hookups and one actual relationship (they married later), but they were concentrated to my knowledge in the film and theater schools.

There are fewer say Chemistry professor/Chemistry major student hook ups...sure.

But often those Chemistry teachers also have intro classes that non-Chemistry types have to take.

And to be clear here, yes there is "sleep with the prof and get a higher grade" but also women tend to find men in positions of authority showing mastery of a topic to be attractive and that's exactly what a professor is to a co-ed...and for the many looking for a father substitute you've got that as well.

Second, those appointed regents need to have enough common sense not to rubber stamp proposals made by "education professionals."

Third, in states where regents are elected, we've got to treat these elections like we are finally starting to treat local school board elections. Run slates of committed conservatives and support them with checkbooks and votes.

181 Excerpt of Ike's Farewell Address:

In this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been over shadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers.

The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

Could it be that they feel the winds of change?

The federal government took over the student loan industry so they could set the rules and cash in on all of that sweet interest money the greedy banks were getting. obama put the student loan program into high gear and the universities complied by jacking up tuition rates by double digits almost every year while expanding the die and critical race theory staff.

But often those Chemistry teachers also have intro classes that non-Chemistry types have to take.

Uh, my undergrad Chem advisor (a PhD Chemist and a big wheel in the ACS at the time) was bangin' a girl I knew very well, who was one of his grad students. And he was married at the time (so was she). They actually lived together for a while, before he got back with his wife. And he also had another piece on the side.
One of the other older PhD faculty guys was discovered in his office bangin' some black girl on a weekend...one of the other faculty found him...by accident. And yet another guy (P-Chem prof) was bangin' the wife of the aforementioned "Chem advisor" behind his back...and they were supposed to be buddies, too.

It happens all over. People are corrupt horn-dogs, regardless of their degree.

You don't owe your student loan to the university, you owe it to the lender. The lender holds your degree as collateral. That's how you structure it.

I know, it's all pretty hilarious.

It was funny at the time, but we that knew had to be careful of what we said. There is actually a lot more to all this that makes it even funnier.
And no, it was actually a rather conservative (relatively) state university. And I bet you would find a LOT of this all over, if you knew the faculty just a little better.

300 Berea College is... weird. They employed bell hooks (intentionally non-capitalized because she didn't believe in capital letters, which made having to read her essays actually annoyed me enough to SNAP back in academia) until she died, among other such fun-filled things. On the plus side, they don't charge their students for anything, and require that they have actual jobs in exchange, which is an admirable thing. They are, however, largely responsible for the reputation that Appalachia as a whole has developed, since that's the image they have been selling to the coastal elites since the 1800s.

The most shocking thing about 2020 for me was seeing the massive Trump parades through the community there, since I assumed the college was more representative of the city than it turned out was true.

Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at January 13, 2023 12:26 PM (zZu0s)

302 But how do we know that "climate change" is not a problem? Science.

What is science:
1) \Make a guess.
2) Refine it to an exact guess, with numbers, a hypothesis.
3) By carefully designed experiment, or observation of nature, see if those numbers are true.
4) If those numbers turn out to not be true, you are wrong. It does not matter how famous you are, how much you are considered an "expert", how many other "experts" agree with you, or how popular the idea is, you are wrong. This is known as falsification.

1) Guess, increasing carbon dioxide (NOT "carbon") will trap heat in the atmosphere and radiate half of it back down, increasing the temperature at the surface.
2 ) Hypothesis, if the amount of carbon dioxide increases to 400 parts per million, it will be trapped in the atmosphere, and the temperature at the midpoint of the atmosphere (10-12 kilometers altitude), which will heat the air there by 2.1 degrees Celsius.
3) Observation, the atmosphere at 10-12 Km alt. has increased by 0.7 Celsius, 1/3 the predicted amount.
4) Conclusion, falsification.

Posted by: Nightfall at January 13, 2023 12:28 PM (xwoai)

303 Problem with above falsification, the physics say the atmosphere MUST increase in trapped heat, it is simple physics.

So are clouds. Most of the Earth is covered with water. Increased head simply means that clouds form slightly sooner. Result, shade, rain, wind (and evaporation, and more clouds), and all that heat from the surface is moved all the way up there into the clouds and radiated out into space. Then, when the sun goes down, the clouds go away, which allows heat from the surface to radiate out.

Think about it, heat, followed by evaporation, clouds, shade, rain, wind. If you are now, at the surface, in shade, being rained on, and with wind blowing, are you going to be cooler? This isn't rocket science.

307 Back when I was a grad student at the University of Minnesota in the mid-90s there was talk of abolishing tenure. It makes a lot of sense, but it's risky for one state to do it alone because top professors might go to other states. Maybe it would be easier to do now because universities are not held in such high regard.
