See it folks? That is Dildo's famous black thumb at work!

Well, to be fair, it is January, and we had a few days of single-digit temperatures, and that's what killed the Rosemary. But since I need some for a dish I am making, this is particularly galling.

Interestingly, the leaves are still fragrant and soft, so I am tempted to try them and see if they do the job!

Does anyone have any experience with that?

As for my gardening expertise, I have the rare ability to kill pretty much anything in a pot or in the ground. Even supposedly hearty plants are no match for my plant-killing talents!

8 I'd use em. Freezing is supposed to be a decent way to preserve herbs. If they aren't gross from freezing and then thawing they should taste fine. But I just buy dried herbs so this is just spitballing.

17 You can use the leaves; not much different than drying them for later use. As long as they are not mushy, they’re good. The plant may recover from the roots in the spring so don’t be too quick to rip them out…

But this was 2-3 days after the freeze.

23 My own first world problem is dad is on a random schedule for when he thinks its time to sleep and time get up (and mostly nap in his recliner.) Its not a huge deal when I'm WFH but he's probably going to have to suck it up for getting him to appointments I made with his audiologist and eye doctor. Hopefully both will help. I miss him keeping his schedule of watching his old westerns and a 24 hr cycle.

35 I have stripped off and dried rosemary "needles" many times. Didn't know there was any other way to keep them. You can crush them with a pestle. It gets messy if you try to chop them with a blade. The dried pieces really fly. They smell good, though.

60 My wife had a rosemary bush in a pot when she moved in that we managed to kill by forgetting about it and it dried out.

This fall, she got a bouquet of flowers and lo and behold, there were rosemary sprigs in it for color. I snipped them off and rooted them in water, and planted them in some pots.
So far this winter they have been growing. Eventually I will be finding places to plant them

Rosemary, Lavender, Basil and Thyme can be rooted from sprigs you get from the florist, or from the grocery store (or your neighbor's front yard I suppose)

65 We dried our herbs at the end of the season. There's still a lot of sage and rosemary, but the basil is about gone. TBH it did not do very well this year anyway. Tried to dry chives but apparently did something wrong. They ended up brown. Next time they go in the dehydrator.

76 We dried our herbs prior to getting our dehydrator by hanging them upside down off a string in the den, over the fireplace since it wasn't being used at the time. A couple weeks later they were ready to be culled and put in jars/bags. Not as messy as it sounds. Plus when we vacuumed up the leftovers the machine smelled great for awhile... leaving a fresh herbal sent in the house for weeks after.

But, like anything we try to preserve, there comes the issue of storage and space.

I'd wager that half the containers on our spices' shelves are long past their best used by date, as judged by their flavor.

I would recommend the dual-fuel portable I have if the asshoes hadn't lied about where it's manufactured (*designed* in the US and built in China). Propane will provide about 20% less power though, so maybe I should have just gone with a gas or diesel type. Most of the sources I've seen recommend Cummins or Briggs & Stratton engines. If you decide to get the manual plug in for the portable to the house that's another few hundred dollars.

Might not be a bad idea for anyone to look into meat smokers, and root cellars, and canning, and dehydration....

They make various kinds of little flowers through the season, are always available for fresh cooking ingredients, and are easier to clear out at the end of the season than most flower patches. Remembering to cut them and lay them out for drying is just a bonus.

My daughter spent an entire year looking for her 'dream home'. One of the requirements was natural gas. She found the home, but when I saw a comparison of what it would cost her to heat it versus my heating oil setup, I thought, 'Those bastids will come after natural gas."

They haven't come right up to the house, so that's where I'll be building my medicinal garden. The veggies are surrounded by electric fencing.

Shooting someone who is in the act of robbing people is probably justified. I suppose someone could argue that he was leaving and therefore the threat was over. However, walking up to someone on the ground and shooting him two or three more times is not justified force. IMO, it started off as a good shoot and turned into a bad one.

Manpower density wise Sill is a training base, ordinarily given my admittedly limited understanding relative to the infantry and intel world her MOS would be distributed mostly to the physical locations of the batteries or DivArty HQs which would have her at Hood or a Forscom base.

Studying MOS distribution has been a bit of a hobby for me for decades, the wife was stationed at Ft Bliss as her first assignment and I started the hobby when the 14 Tangoes explained they were 90% likely by billet to be stuck at Bliss for life.....and they were until big army decided "screw doing this favor for Sylvester Reyes we want the Patriot Batteries with their Corps HQs" and the magic of distribution happened.

290 I live in the Philadelphia area. Left a rosemary plant out on my patio all winter last year. Come spring, it had some little green sprouts so I planted it in a big pot. It turned into a bush by the end of summer.
