  • Where does your recycling actually end up? Muzaffarnagar. (Bloomberg)

    Gesundheit!

Muzaffarnagar is a paper-making centre in northern India. India recycles 6 million tons of paper and cardboard a year to make new paper products, but that comes with half a million tons of other crap, mostly plastic.

    Which they burn.

2 Prayer request from Jane D'oh

Dear Horde:

Would greatly appreciate prayers for the love of my life, Mr. D'oh. He is in a local ICU in very critical condition, with double pneumonia that came on suddenly this afternoon while he was leaving work.

He actually turned on the emergency flashers on his SUV and called 911. He was blue and near death when the ambulance arrived at his business and took him to the hospital.

I found out about it when I called him to find out when he planned to be home for dinner. A stranger answered his phone and told me they were pulling into the ER entrance of the hospital.

He has no signs of heart issues or blood clots, but his lungs are filled with fluid and he is intubated and mildly sedated. I've just arrived home since being in the ER with him at 6:30. He's comfortable, but the doctor said, "He is very critical."

Please pray for him if you are so moved. I'm about to try to catch a little sleep.

5 Wishing Mr. D'oh a speedy complete recovery. I'm no doctor but one of the first things that comes to mind is the need for massive doses of vitamin D. And with that, I'll shut up.

7 From the OMG, Them Injuns is burning plastic article...

A few children picked through the mounds, looking for discarded toys while unmasked waste pickers sifted for metal cans or intact plastic bottles that could be sold.

Can you imagine! Picking thru trash without a mask??!!!

Oh, the huge manatee.

8 I guess the plastic we think we're recycling will have to go back to dumping it in the ocean.

12 All of our "recycling" goes into one bin. The bin gets dumped into a regular garbage truck. Supposedly the recycling gets separated at another facility....somewhere.
I believe whatever does not meet the glass or aluminum rule gets sent to India or somewhere else.

I explain that to my wife, but she still wants to rinse the plastic container that produce comes in and put it into the recycle.

16 Aluminum really does get recycled; it's much cheaper than refining bauxite. That's why they'll pay you for aluminum cans.

Glass and paper are marginal.

I'm not sure if anyone genuinely recycles plastic except as a marketing ploy.

At one time the trash/recycling company had instructions on what what plastic was recyclable.
They don't do that anymore. Like I said, it all goes somewhere to get separated or burned.

Posted by: Bruce at December 28, 2022 04:39 AM (vd8XM)

18 Long ago there was a glass company in town., my grandfather who I never knew was a real glass blower and my other grandmother worked there for years inspecting bottles.
Anyway, they actually recycled glass and paid you cash for weight of . Clear or colored was only separation.

I viewed a video which claimed that plastic materials in the U. S. stamped as #1 or #2 are actually recyclable. It also stated that the plastics industry co-opted the triangle shape from the recycling symbol and cynically placed the "recycling number" within a triangle to confuzzle its own cynical recycling pitch with "true" recycling.

I do know this: that recycling anything made from polystyrene (#7, PS, for those of you who purchased a program) is damn near impossible short of maintaining a dedicated polystyrene recycling stream, and even then the foam vs hard shell container forms are mutually exclusive.

When I was a kid, it was my job to burn the trash in the back yard. I also loved the smell on leaves burning at the curb in my town. Now they spend big bucks picking it up and burying it somewhere, all to save the planet.

52 I always thought it was hilarious how so many liberals probably pat themselves on the back and tell themselves they're saving the world, as they waste millions of gallons of oil shipping our trash to countries where they can ignite it, since it's only the wretched poors that live there.

That's long been the way the left and their commie brethren do things though, where it's not a problem if it just kills all the undesirables.

It's also hilarious (not hilarious haha, but hilarious in it makes me want to lop off heads) that lefties will scream about plastic in oceans and they'll take away our straws to save turtles,, when the only reason the straws are in the ocean are because they sold our trash to India or the Philippines (i think Duerte got sick of this and started sending Canada all their trash back, since they were just polluting other countries while pretending they're so eco-conscious)

Like i said yesterday, the world would be much cleaner, and endangered species much more abundant, if environmentalist were never around, but it's never too late to start.

67 It was either the late '60's or early 70's that Sinatra had been losing his hair and had plugs put in (a relatively new process at the time).

Columnist Mike Royko reported that he was wearing a toupee.

Sinatra wrote a letter to the editor where Royko worked and said "Okay smart guy, I've got a deal for you, you pull my hair, if it comes off, I give you a hundred dollars. If it doesn't come off, I punch you in the mouth".

Royko backed off.

69 An episode of The Lawman, a Warners Western series from 1961, is on, set in Old West Laramie. They actually are showing cold conditions, people wearing coats and shawls, and with blowing wind effects in nearly every scene. Most of the TV oaters of those days never tried to depict the seasons; it was always S. California weather all year 'round. (Have Gun -- Will Travel as always excepted. They shot on location in Oregon and showed Paladin dealing with winter more than once.)

72 Really frightening:

People worry about some things more than the evidence warrants (e.g. nuclear radiation, genetically modified food), and less about other threats than the evidence warrants (e.g., obesity, using mobile phones while driving). This gap in risk perception produces social policies that protect us more from what we are afraid of than from what actually threatens us the most.

83 Usually not up for the tech thread when it's live...blech, insomnia and getting over a bit of illness. Anyway, a few comments:

* Looking over the year, I must formally take back any and all complaints I've made about Elon Musk prior to 2022 including Tesla subsidies. It was tax money well spent; in one fell swoop the man laid bare most of what's driving the West toward oblivion, and he's got a coalition of independent journos and normies backing him up. Respect.
* Chip and component supplies are still hosed up and will be for at least 6 months to a year. I say that as someone who works with EEs on the business end of putting chips on boards and boards in product.
* That Pikachu video was the most delightfully twisted thing I've seen in quite a while. I needed that after the last few days--thanks.

That is the easy answer as far as where I heard it, but also no. I grew up in kind of a hippie catholic church setting (even though Mom, Grandpa and Grandma were all very old school Italian Catholics.) When Mom and Dad moved to Southern Indiana, Mom chose the closest Catholic church- which just happened to be a more new wave kind of deal. Folk singers instead of choir. That kind of thing. Very Vatican II parish.

I'd agree, MP4, except that each episode of TV shows in that time were stand-alones, not part of story arcs. We understood that the stories being shown were isolated incidents in the heroes' lives, not necessarily in day-to-day sequence. It was rare in those days (though with some exceptions) for the heroes to refer to an earlier adventure, or for a guest character to return -- and *that* might have been for the reason you mention. If Guest Girl died in episode 24, but first appeared in 19, it would be confusing if 24 were aired before 19.

Mostly I think the "eternal California" setup was due to economics. Effects for weather cost more in prep and production.

128 Augustus was not really that benign. You look at the proscription regime that he oversaw with Marc Anthony during the second Triumvirate. The way he tried to manipulate the public with both censorship and historical revisionism. Even though after he finally was the sole ruler, he seemed to turn more benign, he was always a ruthless asshole, he just did not have to be quite so out in the open with it with regards to enemies (because most of them were already dead.)
Trajan or Vespasian were probably the best Men to ever be Emperor. They improved or stabilized the empire and both took a fairly hands off approach to direct admin. Trajan especially left it up to local authorities on how to administer their provinces. He tried to decentralize the apparatus while assholes like Hadrian or Diocletian tried to Technocrat their way into controlling every little thing.
Plus, Trajan from what I have heard, was just a Good Man. People followed him and loved him. He just pulled people with him in what he wanted to do without being heavy handed. Natural magnetic personality and deep personal charisma. Considering that I am showering praise on him almost 2000 years later, I guess he had 'It'.

I'm sure there are plenty of job openings in health care right now.

There's no good reason for anyone to be on the road during a blizzard except for an emergency with life or death implications. When I was an employer during a snow event anyone was allowed to leave when they or their spouse became uncomfortable with conditions. I lived five minutes away and had four wheel drive so I was always the last to leave.

I *do* remember one snowstorm when our Governor ordered everyone off the roads except... I forget the term used now.

193 On climate charts:
Here’s climate scientists James Hansen and Makiko Sato describing why they used the 1951-1980 baseline in a study about global “warm” temperature station observations:

We choose 1951-1980 as the base period because that was the base period at the time that "global warming" began to be a public issue. Also it is the time that "baby boomers" grew up, so this choice for base period allows those people to relate today's climate to that which they remember.

Here’s a team from Columbia University (also featuring Hansen and Sato) describing why they chose a 40-year 1880-1920 baseline for their review of “global temperature in 2020:”

We use 1880-1920 as baseline, i.e., as the zero-point for temperature anomalies, in part because it is the earliest period with substantial global coverage of instrumental measurements
