17 I just made a vegan version of a sauce I usually use for chicken. I figured it would suck balls... but it's pretty dang good. All things considered.

I substituted olive oil for the schmalz, and vegetable stock for the chicken stock, and that weird vegan margarine stuff for the butter. Rest is all the same; white wine, apple cider vinegar garlic, shallot, mushrooms, parsley, thyme and rosemary.

I have to do it for my stepson. But flavor-wise, schmalz and chicken stock and Irish butter is better than olive oil, veggie stock, and margarine.

Vegan stuff just isn't as good.

And yeah - I have to keep the kid jacked up on a million vitamins and ludicrous quantities of different seeds and beans and grains just to keep him on the lower end of acceptable weight for his considerable height. It's a pretty lame diet, and it costs me a metric fuckton of cash to keep up with it for a growing teen.

46 So, the lovely and delightful Mrs naturalfake really wanted to see AVATAR: The Longest One Yet yesterday, so we went and saw it.

Credit where credit is due. It looks spectacular and real. Every penny they had was used in the CGI. But, if you've read any review, then you know pretty pictures are the main reason to see A:tWoW

Secondly, it is a stronger movie than the first in that the story revolves around family and the role of the Father in more ways than one, so it's easier to relate to and can generate some tension you can identify with.

Now, the downside. Humans suck. Humanity sucks and deserves to die. There are just diseased carriers of destruction. That's the constant message of the film.

And, of course, the worst most foul of the garbage people are white people, They're almost all psychos or fat, gross, greasy, greedy slobs. Every villain in the movie is an EEEEEEeeeeevil white person. In fact, I don't think I saw a single black person in this movie. Apparently, there are no black people in the future.

So, pretty pictures and a better story told by a guy who hates, I mean, really really hates humanity and wants to lecture you.

One of the houses in our neighborhood has one of those dogs. It looks like a toy when we walk the dogs by their house. At first I thought it was fake, but no, it's real. When it is cold they put a coat on it and I swear it looks like a baby ewok bouncing around.

Breccia has been the smartest dog we've had over the years (13 so far, all were rescues with medical needs mostly). I think the new German Shepherd puppy, Heidi, will probably be as smart as Breccia.

Waiting for Daisy to figure out a few things. Like pulling down the front door handle to get out. For decades that door was out of kilter, so you had to know the trick to kind-of lift it up to open. Metal frame doors with reamed-out hinges, set in concrete ninety years ago, can be tricky to work with. But, last month, a friend of our son's persevered and fixed it. Now it opens like new, perfectly easily.

There was an Italian place in Marietta GA along Cobb parkway called Scallini's. A real good red sauce joint. But they picked up a big reputation as the place you go when your wife was preggers, she gets the egg plant parmesan, and Wammy! the baby comes. It was even written up in the ATL Urinal & Constipation with moms swearing to power of the meal. I miss it. They had real good garlic buns of no magic power other than the magic of dripping garlic butter

I always get it confused with durian because they look similar, so it might be durian I'm talking about. In any event, I avoid both, because it's fucking unspeakably disgusting.

It has a woody, spiny husk, filled with five or six lobes of pallid, sallow, snotlike "fruit" that smells how I imagine an alien autopsy on a decomposed spaceship crash victim would.

I couldn't swallow it. To my astonishment, my dad couldn't either - and this is a man who would eat broken glass and like it. We threw it to the goats. No takers there, either.

I also like brussels and eggplant (in fact, I LOVE eggplant) and b/c I have an HMart with the fresh jackfruit, it is on my list to try and cook for a future Lent. It's supposedly very good in curry (not just BBQ), so I can see a tofu, jackfruit, and veg curry if I have the time and inclination.

Most folks just use the canned jackfruit, but I'd rather have full control of the item if I'm gonna use it - at least the 1st time til I see how much of a pain in the a$$ it is...

Dad figured you could eat for sustenance or for adventure, he loved going to the place that eventually became Grocery Outlet, because who doesn't want to get peanut butter made for South Africa, cornflakes labeled in Hebrew, and Algerian wine. (Wine with Arabic on the label is not great, by the way)

He used to make batter-fried Prairie oysters to serve with iced champagne for one of his lodge "do's"
Eventually they found someone else to cook.

My parents thought Chinese food was too exotic, unless of course it was La Choy and Minute Rice. They had no problem with those repellent Eastern European delicacies - pickled pigs feet and sauerkraut and Polish duck's blood soup.

When I moved out, I was able to enjoy all the exotic cuisines my parents never would have tried (I love Thai and Indian food). You couldn't pay me to eat pig's feet or duck blood soup.

Dad traveled a lot when we were kids. Mom would make all kinds of things. Bro ate it, I did not. Many nights going to bed hungry. Ate at Uncle B's one night, venison, nope. Character defect, I guess. That stuff just creeps me out.

Daughter on the other hand will try lots of new stuff. I made sure of that.
