Her Majesty, who returned from a week in Florida, reviewed my efforts at cleaning the kennel this week, a gut-punching two-day job. While she reorganized some few items, she was mildly complimentary of my efforts, so I guess I didn't do too badly. Cleaned up outside the kennel today. A 10-foot concrete pad surrounds the building, so I made sure there were no weeds sticking up, the pad was swept, etc. It looks absolutely not bad. I just started stitching the Mill Hill Bead&Button kit of a blue jay. Mill Hill kits come in two types -- really striking and really crappy. Sadly, the really crappy ones far out number the good ones.. Last week, I finished the Northern Lights one.
The worst part of doing a Mill Hill kit is sorting the floss. Mill Hill rolls all the fiber in one glob, then expects you to sort the damn thing by color. In the past, I've screwed up I don't know how many times by confusing pale green with pale gray or light medium green. There's only one solution, so I spent over an hour last night checking every color of floss against DMC's big floss sample book, and still raining curses down on their fool heads. Howdy Horde!
Today's project is to mount a TV to the wall. I bought the bracket for it back in August... of 2021. So it's been on the docket for a while now. Sadly, in that time, I've somehow managed to misplace the lag screws that hold the bracket to the wall, so I had to make a trip to Menard's to find a suitable replacement. My previous project was assembling a new computer desk for my home office. My next project is assembling a new computer desk in my son's bedroom. I consented to join the schola at my parish; so prepping for High Midnight Mass has been my hobby lately. We will have caroling followed by Mass with the chanted Credo. Afterward, we will be driving over the river and through the woods, to Grandmother's house we go. (Don't lie, you sang it.) It will likely be the quietest three-hour drive since Christmas 2019, which was the last Midnight Mass I lent my voice to. Good thing I'm decent at Latin, I guess.

No real *projects*, though I do want and need to get back to writing. I have to submit a story to a contest, maybe send another to an online magazine that OrangeEnt has told us about. Otherwise: I have 2 recently-bought vintage pipes that are still sitting in their box. My plan is to try for some of that kidhood suspense and excitement -- open them on 12/24, smoke one that day or evening, and one on 12/25.
Oh, and if the weather is not too cold or hot, to clay and wax the Buick. We may take a road trip to an aquarium on the Gulf Coast. Dresser build
For an all-too-brief time back in the last century, we had access to a woodworker's toolshop. (Not quite as extensive as the guy's in the video.) MiladyJo and I designed and built [drumroll] a breadbox. It was a nice pine breadbox, too. Lid on front pulled down. Had a wood handle. Closed tight simply by friction. All wood, pegs & glue, no metal. Gave it to my sis-in-law and it was still working fine decades later. Not much to speak of, but was a great proof-of-concept of what we could do. Weird, but Quaker State 5W-30 was less expensive than Walmart's own brand, Supertech; and the QS was not on sale. The brand doesn't matter nowadays, any major brand is good stuff. My car takes 6 qts. and is rated for 5W-30 with the "dexos" rating. So it's easy to choose.

The dosing is by weight; the whole tube is for a 1250-lb. horse, so you take the amount for your weight. There's an amount ring on the tube; set it for your weight, squeeze the 'mectin out, and mix it with some peanut butter on toast or something else you like. It does taste like apple juice. A lot of the fun of wine making is seeing what happened when you open the bottle. It's a tad unpredictable, and you should ALWAYS take notes of measurements and ingredients. You'll regret the perfect bottle that you can't reproduce because you were just starting out and didn't think to document everything. And I mean everything. Did you include peels when you threw that leftover fruit in? What brand of apple juice did you casually dump in without thinking much about it?
Trust me. You'll think about that batch almost every time you make wine for years after. Posted by: Press Juan For English at December 17, 2022 06:07 PM (nMXLX) 79

But then a close family member got it and got it bad. According the the Frontline doctors, HCQ is actually more effective because of mutations now. YMMV, of course, but my dear family member went from considering the hospital to sleeping soundly in an hour after HCQ+zinc. It takes a LONG time to get your order tho.

My current hobby is reconstructing my garage ceiling after a burst pipe ruined about 120 feet of drywall - hello butt joints everywhere. I envision a time when my electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and other tools are neatly filed in the garage into containers and appropriately marked for quick retrieval. I have a dream. My success with installing two different mini-water-heaters has me planning a third. At which time the entire house, every sink, shower, bidet, has hot water (on a timer) for some period during the day. Each mini-water-heater provides a shower of about 8 to 12 minutes with a recovery time between 20 to 30 minutes. My township sends out a newsletter every month. This month it is suggesting 5 minute showers to save water. Yeah, no. Anyway, when the third mini-water-heater is installed I'll have spent about a grand. No savings this year, but in five years maybe about $2,000 in Biden dollars. With the leftists apparently able to control elections in the past, present, and into the future, the savings could be even higher. My 1,000 gallon underground home heating oil tank will be untouched this winter. Spring hobby will be filling it with cement. I'm done. There is one, but I have my regular mechanic (since 2001) who does it for that. I buy the oil and filter, true, but then he doesn't have to send out for the supplies, and i can pick whatever brand I want.

AZ, how sweet is mead? I avoid sweet drinks out of preference and concern for my health; so I'd never seriously considered making a fermented honey drink.
Posted by: Catherine That's the interesting part the yeast you chose can either be for 'dry' or for 'sweet' mead. You can also stop the yeast when the taste is *right* by shocking it by chilling it. You have to be careful if you try to stop it though because bottles can not handle the pressure if the yeast takes off again. (I mumble-mumble might have made a batch of bottle bombs when brewing beer, maybe.) Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at December 17, 2022 06:12 PM (jW/QK) 89

"What are you using for an antenna?"
I have a 10-40 EFHW ($75) off the east side of the house, and a 10-80 EFHW ($90) off the west side; other ends hang in trees. EFHW's are great. I've worked 135 countries with them and 50W. Mother Nature hates antennas, and works very hard to destroy them. So that's why I prefer inexpensive wire antennas that can be put up by one person in an hour. Instead of expensive heavy antennas that need a team of people to replace, in often dangerous situations. Look into magloops. They're expensive, but you can set one up anywhere you want, height doesn't matter, and I hear that they really work. Don't even think about buying a new printer until you understand what limitations you're trying to fix. If you don't run into any limitations with what you have, then maybe using what you're familiar with is the way to go. It may turn out that you actually need a resin printer or maybe a bed larger than an 8-inch cube or something else drives your need, and so the i3 would not be appropriate. The nice thing about having a printer is you a have a context into which you can put reviews and tech news. Posted by: Cybersmythe at December 17, 2022 06:35 PM (iZEhM) 121

"One of the hams at work bought himself something that Alpha Antennas calls an "HF J-Pole""
J-poles are commonly used on VHF and UHF. They are easy to build. I made one out of a length of 300 ohm twin-lead cable (like TVs used to use a zillion years ago.) You just nip it in the right places, solder coax near the bottom, and hang it up by the end. Works fine for a low-power dual-band 2m/70cm xcvr. The 10-80 EFHW gives you every ham band 10m-80m (except 60m.) Being able to work nine HF bands with one inexpensive antenna is a real joy. J-poles are commonly used on VHF and UHF. They are easy to build. Posted by: Apply gp Directly To Forehead at December 17, 2022 06:47 PM I find J-poles to be fiddly because they have three different frequency-dependent parts, and if you make a bad enough mistake on any of them, then it doesn't work very well. I generally like vertical dipoles with a delta-match for VHF and UHF, or I just buy something like the discone in the corner over there, or the traditional "mag mount on the filing cabinet." This "HF J-Pole" is nothing of the sort. As near as I can tell from the description, the "J" section is what is energized and the coupled interaction with the larger element is what causes it to radiate. I've got a 6-meter quadrifilar helix in the other corner. I 3d printed the parts to hold the spokes on, but I have yet to do the final assembly. I wish I could still use my hatch to access the roof, but I had to have it sealed off during the latest roof repair job; otherwise I'd be trying all kinds of stuff up there. No way I'm climbing up there on a ladder.

147 If you have the LOTR on DVD, I think there is a featurette about the miniatures and how they were made. As I recall, many of them were not table top models. The one of Minas Tirith was over 6 feet tall.
Posted by: JTB at December 17, 2022 Many of the miniatures were large. Posted by: That NLurker guy where's my Irene Adler? I remembered something about the Isengard miniature, so I looked it up. I saw a video about wet-on-wet pen and ink techniques for drawing, trees in this case. It was all done using a bamboo reed pen (think quill) and a brush. Really interesting results for such minimal tools. I should give it a try.

"Yes, my facetiousness didn't come through. I would not, could not do SMD's. Eyes are too far gone. Wouldn't even consider it."
Some people do it, including a couple commenters I've run into here. I tip my hat to them! Back in the 1960s and 1970s, I'd build electronics all day long, but now I have to break a project up into 45-minute sessions, only one a day. My depth perception is shot, and hands not as steady. Adventures in using aftermarket parts.
See I have in the stash a few more Eduard FW 190F-8 kits. And amidst all the extra parts Eduard provides on the common parts trees are the wide VDM propeller and the 14 blade cooling fan for the more powerful BMW 801TS engine that produced 2,200HP for the FW 190A-9/F-9. Some research says some F-9s got a Ta 152 tail. Some sources say all F-9s did. Of the photos I have found, none showed a Ta 152 tail. But wanted to try a conversion so ordered a resin Ta 152 tail. Using a Tamiya micro-saw I carefully cut the kit tail parts off at a panel line that matched the resin part. So taped the fuselage together and slipped the new tail in to find, oh the horror, it was undersized a noticeable bit. So now have glued the kit tail back on. This is more of a habit that hobby. Dinged my right front bumper cover (plastic) in a parking garage. Scraped off some paint and made a small hole. I had previously dinged my right rear fender in a parking garage and my left front fender, in a parking garage. Previous ones cost $$. So, I am going to try and fix this one myself.
Bought certified car color paint and clear coat, in spray cans, and some bondo for one small hole. Will consult the internet. Not looking for another hobby. Posted by: Javems at December 17, 2022 07:25 PM (AmoqO) 174

Aircraft spine where the plastic meets the resin is a 1mm difference in height. In 1/48 scale.
Would mean lots of putty because I would have to build up the resin part to match the plastic. And then re-scribe all the missing panel lines. Not worth the headache for something that might not have even actually happened. Posted by: Anna Puma at December 17, 2022 07:31 PM (kNH06) 185

We had plans to spend Christmas week in Key West. Unfortunately a family emergency is forcing us to leave tomorrow for Ohio. We have been living in the South, in the RV fir 5 years, and we have avoided cold weather. I told my daughter that it looks like we are setting out for an Arctic expedition. I have croched hats and gloves and scarves and blankets for us. We have no winter gear and they told us today they expect snow for Christmas eve. I'm glad to be seeing family but not snow.

Got the one outdoor Christmas decoration up. Might do more in the coming week.
Fresh cut heavily discounted Christmas tree is in its stand inside, waiting for my firstborn to decorate it. Gotta winterize outdoor pipes, plants, garden hoses and such for the Texas Arctic Freeze that's coming Thursday night and lasting until Christmas Day. And assemble the firewood rack I now have and fill it with the wood I've been accumulating since last year and storing in my shed and now garage. The past few days there was a run on the local firewood guy who HAD a sizeable pile of well-seasoned fireplace-sized logs. He's scraping the bottom of the pile now. Just heard a weather forecast. The days leading up to Christmas in our area are supposed to be unusually cold with various types of precipitation, all solid. Decided my new hobby may be preparation so we don't have to leave the house until things melt. I can still shovel some snow but won't take a chance on ice. I think gravity is getting stronger as I get older.

Late to the thread, too. Spent my bodging time building components for a 2-step stairway to lead from my "front room" , on the slab, to my kitchen, in the trailer which makes up the middle third of the house. An 18" delta in elevation. So one step at 6" and the next at 12". Built plywood side pieces, and under-stair supports. Working on cleats to attach treads and risers. Stairs will be 54" wide. Treads will be 12" deep.
