$3,802,198,798 To Afghanistan This Year...This Is Why We Need Limited Government

When Henry David Thoreau wrote "That government is best which governs least," he was referring to the more noble and immediate issues of freedom and liberty from government control. But limited government is more than that, since it is structurally incapable of creating what we now call "The Deep State," which among many malign affects is completely opaque to any oversight of its spending. When the state becomes a certain size, it acts as a recursive system, without any checks on its internal growth.

Here is a particularly unpleasant example...feel like puking? U.S. Foreign Assistance to Afghanistan: Fiscal Year 2022, was $3.8 Billion. Why? Because programs are funded seemingly in perpetuity because of the inability of Congress to oversee the millions of separate expenditures that it approved a few years, or a few dozen years, or a hundred years ago.

Wait...did I say "inability?" How silly of me. They have abrogated their role as the country's budget overseer and ceded that authority to the many departments and divisions of the labyrinthine federal government. It is impossible to know how our money is spent, and they do not care a whit, as long as they are reelected and get their cut.

But back to Afghanistan! When the national sport of that country is killing foreign soldiers, the idea that we are spending one cent of American money on even the most wonderful humanitarian aid is galling. But the inertia of those thousands of departments and divisions of the Leviathan is more powerful than any silly little notion of honor and integrity and even realpolitik. They will spend because they must spend, so that they get their yearly bump so they can spend a bit more in the future, and on and on and on.

Never mind that we are bankrupt. Never mind that the typical American would be appalled by its government spending money on a country that has been the focus of incredible anti-American and anti-Western sentiment and terrorism.

Anyone care to wager whether that amount will go up for fiscal 2023?

I think back to The Naval Act of 1794, which authorized the building of the first six ships of the post-Revolution United States Navy. The plans were approved by President George Washington! There was direct oversight of the project, and when there were cost overruns (what a surprise!) Congress actually began an investigation. A real investigation.

The dream of all real conservatives is the dismantling of the hydra of the federal government, but that will never happen. What can happen (though it probably won't) is control of the overall budgetary process by a real conservative president and congress. Simply by ending the expected growth in budgets we could force greater accountability in government. The heads of the many departments would be unable to spend without thought, and might actually consider efficiency, quality, success, and other archaic ideas. Even if they don't, growth would end, and there would exist the faintest possibility of economic growth that would eventually allow us to reduce the unimaginable debt.

Yes...you may have some of what I am smoking.

I know that historically the odds are more likely to get tribalism and local corrupt warlords rather than a rebirth of the American founding principles. Even so, I despise the current system so much I am rooting for collapse. I'd probably even work for collapse if I knew how.

34 How many Federal level laws start with "The secretary shall"? Congress has totally abdicated its duty to oversee the Federal budget and supervise the various and sundry departments with the end result that government and government regulations are growing like kudzu. Trump had the right idea: revoke two federal regulations for every new one enacted. Sadly, though, he didn't go far enough. There must be someone who can track down and ascertain both the usefulness and actual legality of all these regulations, as well as the ugly little offshoots of each. I somehow doubt Joey the Vegetable is personally signing each and every check cut to finance Afghanistan.

You sir are 100% correct. We are way beyond the point of any rational spending responsibility and as you point out the only way this stops is a complete crash of the system.

For example, we are still operating under the 9/11 emergency EO that bush signed. It authorizes the President to spend $$$$ on all sorts of things without congressional approval and removes congressional mandated caps on certain aspects of the military including lifting the maximum number of Flag/General officers allowed to be on active duty as set by congress decades ago. The covid emergency EO will also never be allowed to expire.

It is unsustainable and will eventually fall apart but that is going to be extremely painful.

See 'evil Bush', probably really some slow acting thing from Newt had cut some budgets so the half dozen or so different agencies that get funding for buoys for various research were being forced to coordinate and maybe put each other's instruments on one common buoy.

And I forget the number but there are multiple different federally funded programs for jobs training programs as well. Of course any time one points out this kind of waste to someone who is paid by the feds "But MY program does actual good work and besides SS and medicaid eat up 65%? of the annual federal budget. Cutting out all the fat in the various programs would hardly make a dent in the budget"

128 Russia is aligning themselves militarily with Iran. They've bought and are buying "suicide drones" and some short/medium range missiles from them. The Russians are also going to begin training Iranian pilots how to fly the Su-35, a 4th generation fighter/attack jet comparable to our F-15 Eagle. There are 24 of these jets that were destined for Turkey until the US stepped in and killed that deal.

This is a problem. One the junta can't solve, or doesn't want to solve. Pressuring Russia in Ukraine might be sending a signal, but given the incompetence of the *biden administration and those running FedGov, who knows what "message" Putin's actually getting if any at all?

In the end though it's likely the Ukraine/Russian war is a huge source of grift. That must not stop. Plus it's a handy distraction from other things going on.

129 Personal anecdote. Last year when I did my taxes I was annoyed because I couldn't find any record of a 1099 from work for some 'intellectual royalties' we got a check from and that check didn't seem to be included in my regular income statement from work. I went online and royalties are taxable and by my reading I was liable for taxes on any bit they gave me even thought work is a tax exempt entity.

Well the IRS sent me 4 pieces of mail recently. One notice that I was getting a refund and I had a month or so to counter if I thought the refund or amount of it was wrong and a few days later, three checks. One for most of the amount and then about $10 and a $1 check. The amount is about right for my rate on that royalty so I guess I was wrong about having to treat it as royalty income when I filed. But just stupid, send me a notice that I must respond by Jan xx if I think they are wrong and then send the checks early in Dec and 3 separate checks. Our leviathan is relentless at times and can be smothering but efficient they aint.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said that Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who announced she’s leaving the Democratic Party, would keep her committee assignments.

“She asked me to keep her committee assignments and I agreed,” Schumer said in a statement to news outlets on Friday. With Sinema as an independent, Democrats will hold majorities on committees and will have more subpoena power following Sen. Raphael Warnock’s (D-Ga.) reelection earlier this week.

139 The dream of all real conservatives is the dismantling of the hydra of the federal government, but that will never happen. What can happen (though it probably won't) is control of the overall budgetary process by a real conservative president and congress.

My dream is for what happened in the movie "Dave". Where Kevin Kline calls in his friend the accountant to look at the federal government budget books and find all the areas they can either cut programs or move around budget items, so he can save the money needed to keep the program intact for homeless children homes.

I want this done for every single taxpayer dollar in the federal budget. Even better, televise it. Put every single leader in charge of every single department put on the spot as to yea or nay for justifying the money for their budget item. There is absolutely no excuse for why this should not happen.

In June I get a nasty letter that I haven't paid, and had three days in which to pay, so I stop payment on the first check (thinking it had gone astray) and send another one. In July I received a check from the IRS for $14 K, saying I'd overpaid. In August I received a letter saying my first check had been dishonored by the bank when they - finally - had tried to deposit it - four months after they'd received it - because of course I'd stopped payment on it.

161 From a rhetoric standpoint (which is all that matters when it comes to political discourse), conservatives need to stop saying they want to slash government spending and have a more limited government.

Why? 1) It's downright musty and archaic. You might as well advocate for a restoration of Victorian sexual mores. It merely makes you seem way out of date and out of step with reality.
2) Because it simply can't be done. When a party advocates the same thing for decades and does virtually nothing about it even when it is in full power (controlling both houses of Congress and the presidency), it becomes a bad joke.
3) It's bad politics. As the left has shown, all that matters is getting power. If you advocate things that make you less likely to get power, you won't get to do those things. This is something Trump understood when he said he wasn't interested in cutting entitlement programs. We all know it needs to be done. But you can't do it if you don't have power.

The left is clever enough not to trumpet their least popular policy ideas. Instead, they wait until they're in power and then they just quietly implement them. Conservatives need to be at least as clever.

If you believe what Oliver Stone has shown in "JFK" and "JFK Revisited" (and I do), JFK and Robert Kennedy were assassinated, because they were working to defund the CIA and the Deep State.

So anyone who thinks that the Deep State can be dismantled easily is naive. The Deep State has been taking out their enemies for decades, by any means necessary. It is going to take an army of Trumps and DeSantises to take them on and defeat them. And keep in mind the Deep State is fully backed by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and who knows how many billionaires (Soros, Gates, Zuckerberg, etc.). Nevermind the (Discover the) Networks of thousands upon thousands of organizations all across the country and world.

2) 25K votes entered the system after election day for which there is no chain of custody at all.

3) Election day problems were NOT resovled in an hour, that is a flat out lie, and some polling locations continued have problems all day. Statistical proof that this turned away minimum 30K voters.

5) New ballots printed by the vendor with no chain of custody.

6) 3rd party vote curing and counting was occurring was being done with no observers.

7) 3rd party vendor was told they could include votes by friends and family into the batches without chain of custody.

I might need to do a post on this. Any one of these issues in a black district would result in a new election.

She is also suing directly at the AZ Supreme Court level to avoid the corrupt judge issue. She cites one of the problems where Maricopa destroyed evidence in the last lawsuit in defiance of that court's direct order.

It's a really solid case from my non-lawyer reading.

209 Dave in Fla - love your work. But SCOTUS has been pretty clear by their actions that this kind of thing is a law enforcement issue and not a judicial one. Correctly I think. The courts are not going to take on the task of monitoring elections. Fixing this is a job for Legislatures and AG's and Sheriff s and detectives. Just like with the Mob.

Wrong. Bush v Gore is quoted in the suit along with many SCOTUS and Arizona precedents.

210 Strikes me that the machines were manipulated in mass quality to fail.
As a article some weeks ago, voting machines are in reality subbed out to private companies who make them to count votes and not controlled by any government agency

Posted by: Skip at December 11, 2022 02:10 PM (xhxe8)

211 Just imagine how much worse it would be if somehow the low quality candidates had gotten elected!

I've come to think we'd have been better off electing ManBearPig in 2000.

Shrub minimized Clinton's role in 9/11 and since he was an R LIVs figured there wasn't much to it.

Imagine if on 9/11 Gore is president and gets some commando raid (which his staffers said he was going to do) annihilated in 'Stan and endless terror attacks for the next 2 years. People might have been ready for actual change, instead of Shrub, in 2004 - the FRED perhaps?

214 Skip - Forgot that one, there is expert testimony included from someone who does cyber security for voting machines, including the ones used here, that is is impossible to have widespread problems without intentional interference.

Posted by: Dave in Fla (there is no path to 270) at December 11, 2022 02:15 PM (5p7BC)

215 Thanks Dave! Have perused parts of the lawsuit and agree that it's dynamite (i.e., that the underlying facts are dynamite).

I imagine a similar suit for Clark County NV in 2020 would have been spectacular in a similar way. The modalities of potential fraud varied in WI, MI, PA, and GA, but they were there in all of them.

Hard to believe AZ courts will do their job, though. Possible. One comforting consideration the fearful AZ judiciary might keep in mind is that even though examining the merits of Lake's suit will be a spectacular confirmation of fraudulent insecure election process, America is mostly politically passive and dead, there is no press, and the GOP has no interest in addressing the issue.

So they could rule in a normal and legitimate fashion without fear of, you know, being adults and making waves where needed. This fear being a big part of why the judiciary has refused, generally, to help clean up election fraud.

217 It's a really solid case from my non-lawyer reading.

And every court so far has refused to get involved.

Everyone knows they stole the AZ race but...much like the county officials who certified it because "they told me I'd be arrested for a class 6 felony!" no one wants to take a stand...

Posted by: 18-1 at December 11, 2022 02:20 PM (lc5cP)

218 Agree that is the risk. No doubt the courts will want this lawsuit to go away, but Hamedeah and Finchem will also be suing. And Masters ought to sue based on the signature match crap (doubt he will though).

This is going to be hard sweep under the rug because it is very public in Arizona, and Lake is going to present her evidence regardless, whether in court or directly to the public. The court she went to is the one who Maricopa thumbed their noses at in 2021 when they destroyed supeonaed evidence.

Not allowing a trial could be a bigger risk to the courts, but we shall see.

Posted by: Dave in Fla (there is no path to 270) at December 11, 2022 02:21 PM (5p7BC)

219 And no matter how many incredibly lame and transparently invalid arguments are raised in defense of *any* electronics involved in the election process (including here, some times), there is no getting around that paper ballots, and manual or mechanical tabulation, are required elements of any system meriting trust. Even states like FL and OH that have substantially cleaned up their systems should revert to zero electronics. It's an utterly superfluous thing whose downsides completely negate its trivial advantages.

The issue of voting "season" vs. voting day is another key element, of course. But everyone has already surrendered on that, so.

224 You might as well advocate for a restoration of Victorian sexual mores.
____________

No need. That will happen as a matter of course, once enough of the population becomes disgusted with the current licentiousness, and/or another crappy disease breaks out and spreads like wildfire.

It's an age-old pattern: pathological licentiousness alternating with pathological primness on a multi-generational timescale. Do you think Victorian sexual mores had obtained during, e.g., the Renaissance?

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at December 11, 2022 02:53 PM (YqDXo)

225 Definitely willowed, but just came to the thread. Arizona may be a unique case because they have a history, early in statehood, of a governor suing and the election being overturned. He was actually the incumbent and the challenger took office while the lawsuit was going on, but after the courts ruled in his favor, he took office and finished out the term. So there is Arizona precedent for this sort of thing.
