INVENTORS

Caveman #1: *Sigh* “I haven’t invented anything good since fire. It’s like I’m spinning my wheels.”

So what have y’all ever invented?

Any patents? Any success getting the world to realize they need your invention?

COMPETITIVE MEAT JUDGING

The Texas A&M football team isn’t having a very good year, but their Meat Judging Team is causing Aggie hearts to swell with pride.

Texas A&M Meat Judging Team Wins National Title

The Texas A&M University Meat Judging Team claimed the 2022 national championship at the American Meat Science Association, AMSA, International Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in Dakota City, Nebraska, on Nov. 13.

Guys, I am saying this without any intent at innuendo or double entendre - a woman who attended college to learn how to judge and grade meat will make you a much better wife than any woman who pursued a grievance studies degree.

GIFT IDEAS FOR MEN

I feel sorry for you ‘ettes, because the Christmas shopping season starts this Friday, and men can be hard to buy for since we tend to buy what we want, and if we haven’t bought it we don’t want it.

A couple of years ago my wife bought me a salt gun (for killing flies) as a Christmas gift. Although I had to wait for Spring to roll around before the first fly snuck his sorry self into my house, he didn’t have much time left to regret that decision. What’s really awesome is that unlike fly swatters, there doesn’t need to be a hard surface behind the fly to dispatch it.

After several years, it remains the gift that continues to kill. Best household gift ever!

LOST TREASURE FOUND IN THE WOODS

American Chestnut Tree Discovery in Delaware Wows Conservationists

After the species was devastated by an Asian blight in the early 20th century, a single American chestnut tree in Centreville has been deemed a “precious resource” by the Delaware Nature Society.

“For people who are interested in trees, that’s kind of a holy grail-type thing, to see a big American chestnut,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything that size anywhere, and very few people have.”
The tree is estimated to be about 50 years old and 70 feet tall, with a circumference of at least 35 inches, White said.

There used to be about 4 billion American chestnut trees in eastern U.S. forests, until chestnut blight arrived in New York via infected plants and spread rapidly, nearly wiping out the majestic trees.

The giant chestnut trees that used to dominate forests are all but gone; however, the fungus doesn’t affect the roots of the trees. The centuries-old root systems sprout new trees over and over, just for them to die young due to the blight. The species is considered “functionally extinct.”

While keeping my eyes open for Ivory Billed Woodpeckers as I walk through the woods, I reckon I need to start looking for American Chestnut trees too.

LOST TREASURE STILL NOT FOUND AT THE BEACH

A rite of passage for Texas children has been digging on the beach to find pirate Jean Lafitte’s buried treasure, or any other treasure that might have been buried there.

I still recall the excitement of heading to Padre Island when I was about 6 or 7 years old, ready to start digging for treasure. To be fair, the little children out there digging for buried treasure are more likely to find it than their parents are to win the Powerball’s treasure.

National Park Service History – Padre Island

Still other stories of Padre Island center on pirate activities. According to these tales, the famous Jean Lafitte often sailed in Padre's waters while on his privateering voyages. Some suggest the Laguna Madre was one of Lafitte's favorite pirate hideaways. There is no doubt that Lafitte did in fact live for a number of years around 1817 on Galveston Island at a settlement called Campeche.

He engaged in number of dark and mysterious activities ranging from privateering to possibly spying on Mexico. There is a good deal of doubt that he ever set foot on Padre Island. Nevertheless, stories that the island conceals buried pirate treasure abound, to the delight of countless children who have for years diligently dug the sands searching for Lafitte's buried gold.

Yet another tale claims that John Singer, who because of his Yankee sympathies was forced to leave Padre at the outbreak of the Civil War, buried sixty, seventy, or even eighty thousand dollars before crossing to the mainland. This buried treasure, of course, is still missing.

What about where you grew up? What treasures were you trying to find as a child?

SELLING A MURDER HOUSE

There is a house that’s just a couple years old in a neighborhood not too far from mine, and in this house a person was murdered last year. It has been unoccupied since the crime, and the house just went up for sale. Unlike other houses with lots of real estate traffic, I’m not seeing it at this house whenever I drive by.

So, just how do you go about marketing a house like this one?

How To Sell A Murder House, According To The Expert

“Clean thoroughly” is certainly a useful piece of advice.

Here’s some more advice:

”If you want to sell right away, be realistic about the fact that you're going to take a hit.”

”Consider renting it out for a few years.”

“Don’t demolish”

“You might want to replace the facade”

Would you buy a house in which a murder occurred? What if you were going to be the first occupant since the crime?

Have any of you realtors ever listed a house (or served as a buyer’s agent) in which an awful crime occurred?

THROCKMORTON’S FIRST LAW OF LIVE MUSIC: IF THERE’S AN UPRIGHT BASS IN THE BAND, IT’S PROBABLY GOING TO BE GOOD

If one upright bass is a signifier of good music, what the heck should you expect from five upright basses? (Actually double basses.)

This is actually pretty cool - five double basses playing the Pink Panther Theme.

I saw a video by the people that are trying to restore the trees and mentioned this place online. Managed to get someone up there to see them. And he gave them the info on the trees. I did go see them one last time before the move. They plantec redwoods up there too. A lot of the trees didn't survive. It's a shame that it's been abandoned but I hope they can use those trees. They didn't grow on the West coast so there's no virus there.

185 Today the thermometer shot up to a scorching 32 degrees F, so I started two cars and moved them into the shop to winter over. The Poor Wretched Panhard started pretty readily, but ran out of fuel, and I could hear the electric fuel pump racing, so it was sucking wind. Poured a gallon in the tank, got it started, went to put it in gear, and it quit. Fuel pump racing again, and the smell of gas everywhere. I used a tow strap, and pulled it across the yard with a Suburban. Big gas stain on the ground; I guess a rubber line split. Rigged a lawn mower fuel tank to gravity-feed into the carb. Got it running, and drove it into the shop. Success. The '71 Super Beetle was less trouble, but still took some doing, and it's in the shop now, too.

My oil tool idea? Make a sound recorder/spectrum analyser that could be fit into a bit sub. Record the sounds made by the bit and the downhole mud motor. I'm pretty sure the nature of the sound would change as formations under the bit changed. And broken bits, or failed bearings in the mud motor would make characteristic sounds, too. You build a library of sounds, and have the analyzer in the tool. The tool reports to surface using the data channels used by the MWD; either mud pulses or EM.

235 Manson was actually a pretty intelligent guy, and I almost feel pity for him, he couldn't resist the demons or whatever.

What struck me, he had spent most of his life incarcerated. Released in 1967 or 1968 iirc, within a year or two, he's living in a Mansion - somebody else's mansion, and some big mover's and shakers in the music biz are taking him seriously. He was recorded quite a few times, at major studios. The problem was, he was also bug nuts crazy, even by LA standards. They couldn't work with him, he couldn't take direction.

Angela Lansbury's daughter had permission to run with the "family", but eventually, she got out. Melcher did bail on Charlie, and that pissed him off.

Beach Boys did publish and record one of Charlie's tunes, changing the title. But I can see, sort of, how that would only have increased his credibility with the family. They are all whacked out on drugs. He plays the tune for them on Beach Boy vinyl - "Didn't I tell you they are stealing my stuff?!" What are they supposed to think? "Oh wow, Charlie have s right! He's been singing that for years".

243 Not a patentable device (or idea) but I fought for years with the SVP of Purchasing of (very large utility) to ditch paying suppliers based on the invoices they sent us. Issues with Invoices are legendary.

My argument was that a RFQ, a PO, a Material Receipt and then an Invoice are largely the same thing except at a different point along a timeline. Not quite that simple of course but still. Anyway, I was pushing him to only pay the supplier based on the material receipt generated at the storeroom NOT based on some paper from the supplier. As we had over 500 storerooms where material was coming in, matching the invoicing to the PO and then to the MR was monstrously expensive. Cutting out even one step would save $$$$$ every year.

They did adopt it eventfully but only after, iirc, Ford adopted that method. They did send me a little bonus though. That was nice.

255 Another good "Family" story, a nice midwestern Nebraska girl puts some flowers in her hair and heads out to SF for the "summer of love" (presumably followed by the "autumn of syphilus") and eventually, ends up at Spahn Ranch with the gang.

Sometime in 1969, her parents in Nebraska get a phone call from Charlie. Come get your daughter.

She's "too weird" for us. So they came and collected her. So it's entirely possible that out in Nebraska, there is a yet today, an aging hippie chick who was "too weird" for the Manson Family. LOL

He conceded that “it’s going to take time to get inflation back down to normal levels.”

However, he said that “in six short weeks, Americans are going to start to feel the effects of the Inflation Reduction Act,” the massive legislation that he signed in August.

261 My friend patented the Beer Can Chicken cooking stand. He spent 30k getting the patent. He thought he was just at the end of his attempts to get his money back when he sold the rights to sell the product to a small chain of BBQ supply stores where he would get like 10 or 20 cents ( I forget exactly) a unit on top of a cash deal for a set period of time.

While the deal was being finalized he got an order for 500,000 units from Walmart from an earlier contact he had made. He went through with the deal after a little alteration because of that sale.

Just before his deal with the BBQ chain was to end they discovered Academy and another chain were selling the same knock off product . They sued and won another nice chunk of change.

All this because he went duck hunting with some other friends and the beer can kept tipping over on the grill when they were making beer can chicken after hunting that day.

264 Speaking of backsplashes, here at stately Peon Manor, the kitchen counters and backsplashes are made of vintage Arborite (phenolic board like Formica). The one behind the sink fell off, and has a vicious curve in it. Any suggestions for flattening it? I put it out in the hot sun during the summer with weights on it, and it flattened a little, but the curve has come right back.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 20, 2022 11:14 PM (o59SV)

Well, when I used to make formica countertops we used to use a heat gun, and it had to be a heat gun. Basically we used that to bend the edge of the top around a radius corners, like an island top. It was the only way to bend it around without snapping. The only thing was there was a fine line between bending and bubbling it. It did work though.

273 ..A 5 cent cigar is probably all horse shit and splinters and would burn like a sparkler. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at November 20, 2022 10:57 PM (VwHCD)

The cheapest machine made cigars feature a paper wrapper, the pulp being made from mashed-up cigar bits. Nu-Leaf was the brand of that wrapper, IIRC. It's about as foul as Berserker's description.

There are a few quality, machine made cigars. Mixed cut filler, the leftovers from super premium leaf used by major brands. Those cuttings are collected, dumped into the chopping machine, and become filler for bargain priced, quality cigars. They have machine-processed, but traditional binder and wrapper leaf, but no hand-rolling as we know it. Same tobaccos as in H. Uppmann, Arturo-Fuente, Montecristo, and many other notable labels.

You'll find many such in the listings from JR Cigars, Thompson Cigars and other major online sellers. These are great cigars for outdoor settings on a windy day, or strong wind, such as sailing. No need to burn up a $15+ stick in the wind, when that $3 stogie tastes damn near identical, and is a consistent burn in the doing.

1. She's swarthy, but not the scary kind of swarthy. No gangsta rap albums or bodies dropping from her.

3. She had some sick burns at the United Nations, which is like shooting international fish in a barrel with a cannon.

4. She was governor of the retarded Carolina, according to the citizens of the other one, half a decade ago, where she held every position on the Confederate flag, infuriating everyone.

277 My oil tool idea? Make a sound recorder/spectrum analyser that could be fit into a bit sub. Record the sounds made by the bit and the downhole mud motor. I'm pretty sure the nature of the sound would change as formations under the bit changed. And broken bits, or failed bearings in the mud motor would make characteristic sounds, too. You build a library of sounds, and have the analyzer in the tool. The tool reports to surface using the data channels used by the MWD; either mud pulses or EM.

282 I invented a plastic structural part used on the 747-400. One piece of plastic replaced 13 pieces of metal assembly that was failing to do its job. Tested that in Japan because their laws allowed certain levels of test on in-service planes.

Also invented the phone cradle seen on older 747s and 767s. Had to test the "hang-up switch" always hung up. At my desk. I may have some residual hatred for the guys who had the phone.

Also invented a dual pyrotechnic release mechanism. There are lots of single channel release mechanisms, but I needed one with dual-channel redundancy that would release if only one channel fired, yet had only a single attachment point. That is a rocket part.

I actually have an old super 8 movie that was taken on easter when we were kids at my grandmothers house. Its hysterical, you see the camera getting close to a closed door, the door opens, and its frigging pandemonium in the room, all the cousins going nuts. You see this wooden spoon come into the frame. I remember Presto-Logs and Totem Logs from growing up in Vancouver. Our family even had a Presto-Log cutter: two parallel panels of steel, with a wedge on a lever between them. Push a log an inch or so through holes in the panels, work the lever, and pry off a biscuit. The logs were hard to light, and slow-burning, but broken into biscuits, they burned well.

She had a mixture of wrigleys spearmint gum and mothballs. There were a few pinchers, not many though. The pinchers were mostly the italy born older women. The american born aunts not so much. Huge difference between my mom's side and my father's side. My mom's side was more northern italy it seems. My mom's mom could have been hitler youth she was so white, as are everybody on my mom's side. Some tall blonds there also. The Experts came up with a more permanent solution than colored contact lenses 20 years ago.

An injection will dissolve the melanin on the eyes. All Blue (or 1% green underneath).

486 My claim to fame for patented stuff comes by way of my father - he invented the system (which may still be in use today) for the electronic Arrival and Departure screens that you see in airports. He taught my mother how to solder, told her what needed to be soldered to what, and while he was at work, she would do that day's tasks.

He sold the rights to the system (and the patent) to - I think he said Delta airlines - for the equivalent of a year's salary at the time.

His employer tried to say that they had the rights to it, but he told them to shove it, as he had done all of the work outside of business hours. They let him go.

It all worked out, though - he ended up at NASA during the space program, which was really cool growing up!

516 Technically speaking, the precise definition of music posits three (3) components - harmony, melody, and rhythm.

Rap may be popular, but it isn't music. I was around when it first splashed onto the popular scene - living in Army barracks where various cultures lived in close proximity, starting in the late 1980s.

Rap popped up relatively overnight. I couldn't understand the popularity. It seemed retrograde, and vaguely retarded or juvenile.

It is tribal (not "racial"), but tribal. It is meant to separate it's adherents from forms of grace, beauty, melody, harmony and a love of the joy of music which can blend us all.

NO ONE did not love and groove to the Fifth Dimension, Righteous Brothers, Earth, Wind and Fire nor Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. The most unifying era of music known to the Modern Age.

"cRap" is but a wedge. A frightful, terrible, horribly effective WEDGE. May it die the death of a million nordic throat singers.

527 Californians get a bad rap (heh).

What I mean by that, actual Californians are pretty cool people generally, and not not necessarily liberal or whack jobs. People associate Californians, the very worst excesses of "California" outside California, but that isn't what's going on.

Charlie Manson, and the rest, alluded to earlier is a good example. He, and his followers, are indelibly linked to California. But he was from Ohio. A few were born there - Sandy Goode, but "Tex" Watson ... etc.

It must be maddening to be California born and raised, we're all in the same boat now, regardless, but they were "first". Used to be a very reliable, conservatively run state. Believe it or not. The model of government, law enforcement and well run highway and public works, energy creation, it drew government and policy people from around the globe to see how it was done.

Not anymore.

I'm a native of San Diego, CA. Navy brat, though. Lived 2 years in Idaho Falls, when the Old Man was in Nuclear Power School. Another bit in Vallejo, CA, when he became a Plank Owner (commissioning crew) aboard the USS Scamp.

Then back to San Diego, followed by 4 years in Orange County (when he had L.A. shore duty (recruiter), then back to San Diego, through H.S. Graduated, and right into the USAF.

I LOVE CA, but am SO glad I don't live there any more. I've been there often enough to say this, without reservation. The locusts have eaten the heart out of my home state, and I HATE THEM for what they have done.

532 I have read it's difficult to over estimate how important the Chestnut was to the eastern woodland settlers, and in Appalachia. Very strong, yet lightweight wood, easy to work. Excellent fenceposts. And a critical foodsource for wild game, which in turn provided food for people.

I don't remember American Elm, but I do remember seeing urban landscapes looking like tree less moonscapes after they were gone. Elm was planted heavily, a beautiful tree. My dad said they made a "tunnel" of green on the roadsides around town. All gone.

The street departments made a policy of planting several species to try and prevent a repeat. Good thing - Green Ash is almost completely gone in urban settings now. Other species used now - Hackberry, Maple, Pin Oak, etc. Turns out actually very few species actually make good landscape trees. Soil compaction, salt tolerance, pollution. Fast growing species cause lots of trouble. Sidewalk buckling, shedding limbs, roots ruthlessly seeking water and causes trouble with sewer or water mains.

I think by the time they actually sold it, most of the old neighbors had moved and the murder was forgotten.
