If he does really think that there is no distinction between virtue and vice, why, sir, when he leaves our house let us count our spoons.
-- Samuel Johnson

Justice, I think, is the tolerable accommodation of the conflicting interests of society, and I don't believe there is any royal road to attain such accommodations concretely.
-- Learned Hand

Think'st thou that duty shall have dread to speak when power to flattery bows? To plainness honor's bound when majesty falls to folly.
-- William Shakespeare: King Lear, Act 1, scene 1,

There is no more dangerous menace to civilization than a government of incompetent, corrupt, or vile men. The worst evils which mankind ever had to endure were inflicted by governments.

Wouldn't that be nice! I am unaware of any other debt that cannot be discharged through bankruptcy. Even tax debt can be under certain circumstances. But the academic cartel is powerful and has managed to scam America over the last 50 years...ever since Griggs v. Duke Power Co. began to force corporate America to accept a college degree in lieu of actual intelligence and aptitude.

The problem now is that there is so much debt that is not held by the schools that discharging it through bankruptcy wouldn't hurt the universities that have defrauded their customers. The federal government holds most of it (92% according to the Chamber of Commerce), and the rest of it is private.

That needs to change, but the idea that the federal government would give up control is ludicrous. We are stuck.

Lynn Anderson singing what her producer said was a "man's song." Rose Garden was recorded without any of the modern technological marvels that could make me sound like Luciano Pavarotti or George Harrison or Taylor Swift.

Pretty good voice anyway!

Yeah...I like Arcade Fire. At least some of their stuff. And I am told by reliable sources that they put on a great show!

Matt Walsh is partly correct in this very interesting video, but he blurs the line between punishment as accepted by Western Culture and punishment accepted by non-Western cultures. His rhetorical cleverness aside, I am not convinced that brutal corporal punishment is appropriate.

The Reason Why Singapore Is Beautiful

Regardless, it is an interesting video and worth a listen.

Amy Winehouse. What a waste. Amazing talent...amazing voice...and smart enough to surround herself with good musicians. Here is Valerie, which is fun and upbeat (for her). You Know I'm No Good is less so, but still shows off her incredible voice. And here is Back To Black, maybe her most famous song.

This guy is a loon, but his comedy can't quite hide a profound understanding of electricity.

Anyhow Singapore just increased the cost of getting permanent residency to 25 million.

Checked on my bees today. The half feral hive stung me five times but they had a lot of honey left over from winter. Took a couple of quarts. The blend of summer and fall nectar is a bit dark but the flavor is good.

89 Matt Walsh is partly correct in this very interesting video, but he blurs the line between punishment as accepted by Western Culture and punishment accepted by non-Western cultures.

Imprisoning people for the endless laws we have doesn't always make sense. In fact, we should have far fewer laws, with the remaining ones being more seriously enforced. My basic suggestions;

All murders are punished by the death penalty. And the method of execution is as close to the method as the victim was killed as possible.

Minor crimes should be punished by things that are painful/embarrassing. There is no need to send a non-violent yute to prison where he is likely to just learn to be a better thug when you could give him a Singaporean caning and then have him clean up whatever damage he caused.

Additionally we could get rid of a slew of crimes just be getting rid of laws. Far fewer people would cheat on taxes, for example, if they were confined to sales/import taxes.

101 I've heard a description of Singapore's health care model, which sounds very interesting. It's socialized, with all big costs covered by the State, BUT everyone has to pay something for every visit - nothing is completely free. THANKFULLY our Gov. Gabby Gruesome released the National Guard to assist. Which at this posting, has consisted of a couple of UH-60 Blackhawk flyovers right before he left on VACATION.

Seems most of our mountain communities consistently vote Republican which has ABSOLUTELY no bearing on the current level of response by our state...

No one who pretends to talk about Mexico is willing to face the reality of affairs there. The "Government" is a sham, in charge of nothing, and are little more than accountants for the Cartels. The Cartels are the real power, and the actual government, such as it is - and until we come up with a plan to deal with the Cartels militarily nothing will ever change. Talking to their nominal government is pointless because that government has no power to change anything.

100% excise tax on any money mailed/transferred to Mexico. First class mail to Mexico deemed "open for inspection" 300% excise tax on plane tickets to Mexico. 300% excise tax on credit card payments to Mexican hotels/resorts. All of these immediately in place for 1 week per each kidnapped American, with a one-time-only offer to not implement this if they are returned RFN.

That would be step one if we were serious. Step two would be to put Mexico on the "can't use US passports to travel there, so if you go you are on your own list"

Note how odd that gets. Lots of local politics in the time zone layout. Note in particular the upper peninsula of Michigan. All but the 4 counties on the border with Wisconsin are still in EST. I got interested in why Michigan was in Eastern time zone. Originally it was in Central, as it should be. But then Detroit got some ideas. I thought that might have been the auto industry wanted to be the same time as NYC, but it was something called the "Detroit More Daylight Club" was responsible. They wanted an extra hour of sunlight after quitting time, and thought jumping eastward to EST would be the ticket.

The rest of the state followed suit after a few decades.

Anyway, doncha know that today it is required to judge all cultures and all time periods as if they are the present and some Connecticut suburb. That way we can look at the past and feel superior. Or look at the crimes of other cultures and feel superior.

There is no such thing as DST with local mean time. Same as there is not DST with Zulu, UTC.

Local mean time is the hour angle of the sun relative to the local meridian plus 12. UT1 is that for the prime meridian. UTC is not exactly that, as it is defined to tick at atomic time, with periodic leap second corrections, but right now, UTC is almost exactly UT1.

That reminds me, something our own AOP mentioned a while back. Remember the old mechanical electric clocks they started putting in cars back in the '70s.

Very simple 12V driven clock. It had automatic adjustment. If the clock was running slow, meaning you had to adjust it forward every so often, then put in a little parallel adjustment that would speed up the tick rate slightly. And vice-versa if it was running slow, and you had to back it up.

Very clever trick for a simple mechanism.

After going through those other surgeries she knows what she's looking at. A friend who had replacements said he had no pain. Said he rented/bought a machine that - one lies on a bed, put your feet in the arms and they would swing back and forth flexing the knees.

He could read or watch TV, whatever one can do lying on his back and the machine would do the work.
Knees are next on my agenda and so is that machine.

Millions of defective Chicom dehumidifiers have been sold in the US. Galvanic corrosion problems -- refrigerant will leak out, and unit will overheat and catch fire. A number of fires have been blamed on these.

Garbage Chicom products taking over the market.

342 thank God our founding fathers weren't as dumb as or present politicians. I used to think you had to be smart to be a Senator or Governor or House member, but I have been fooled lately, they are sure dumb asses meeting in a marble palace. (or living in the WH)

Well the Detroit Redwings were in Central Division for ever and were a nemesis for the St. Louis Blues every year (their Russian players were great). Then they suddenly became an Eastern club!!

351 I have a funny story about heater elements and AC power.

A long time ago I worked in a theater with homemade fog machines. They were 50 gallon barrels with water heater elements in them that you plugged into the wall outlet. There was a fryer basket in the top that you load with the dry ice. And dryer hoses that you would direct the fog with.

Tradition had it you turn on the heat, let the water warm up for so long, use so many pounds of dry ice, drop it in and fog would come out the hoses.

Well, me and a coworker were tasked with upgrading these fog machines. We replace the heater elements and we put fans in the dryer hoses. The first night we used it we followed the traditional, "heat the water so long use this many pounds of dry ice."

Well... The original heater element had actually been a 240 element but it been plugged into a wall outlet at 120 volts. Which if you watch the video above you know meant it operated at much lower heat. We replaced it with 120 elements. And boy did that the heat the water up! The fog on the stage was 5 ft high and all the actors were hidden in it. It rolled off the stage into the audience for the first two or three rows.

353 I am making $90 an hour working from home. i was greatly surprised at the same time as my neighbour advised me she changed into averaging $100 however I see the way it works now. I experience mass freedom now that I'm my non-public boss.
