Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition![]() Although it is reasonable to predict that living with a very severe condition is against the best interest of the newborn, it is hard to find definitive arguments to the effect that life with certain pathologies is not worth living, even when those pathologies would constitute acceptable reasons for abortion. It might be maintained that ‘even allowing for the more optimistic assessments of the potential of Down's syndrome children, this potential cannot be said to be equal to that of a normal child’. But, in fact, people with Down's syndrome, as well as people affected by many other severe disabilities, are often reported to be happy. Nonetheless, to bring up such children might be an unbearable burden on the family and on society as a whole, when the state economically provides for their care. On these grounds, the fact that a fetus has the potential to become a person who will have an (at least) acceptable life is no reason for prohibiting abortion. Therefore, we argue that, when circumstances occur after birth such that they would have justified abortion, what we call after-birth abortion should be permissible. Amazingly, they open the door to many other murders that they can justify based on their subjective analysis of the worth of a human being. "Potential" being the operative word! Doesn't that allow for the culling of low potential children? Okay kids, this IQ test is pretty important, because the bottom 25% of you will be killed! And why not extend this eugenicist's wet-dream to the parents of those low-potential children? That way society can minimize the possibility of more dumb kids being born. The unalterable fact is that all human life is valuable, and any attempt to qualify it leads to unimaginable evil. It is not up to us to judge the worth of a child, whether he is in the womb or in the hospital nursery. And let me dismiss the leftist counter-argument that we have capital punishment, therefore we do the same thing they advocate. There is a huge difference between judging the worth of a person and judging his actions. A moral society does not punish potential, it punishes behavior. The value of a human being is intrinsic and immutable, and any attempt to categorize based on scholarly nonsense is a terrifying peek into the minds of people who are evil, and in a different time were concentration camp guards, or experts in the logistics of mass murder, or clerks in offices counting bodies. But I will grant them one thing; they are logically consistent! If a life before birth is without worth and can be ended based on the whims of the mother or the state, then it follows that that life is worthless after birth.
--- They are NOT logically consistent! We've seen recently that they will fight tooth and nail to justify the "trans rights" of fetuses in the womb. In the same breath they will shout out how much they support women's "reproductive rights." Which is it? Can you kill a fetus if it's trans? 74 My late wife had an abortion long before I met her. She never recovered. Every small or large piece of bad luck in her life after that was a direct result of her abortion. When our first died, it put her over the edge never to be mentally stable again and she eventually killed herself.
It took twenty years, but her abortion killed not only her first baby, but her as well. Abortion kills - by definition. Posted by: Tonypete at October 11, 2022 11:16 AM (LsEU/) Very sad. She never found forgiveness. Some people never can forgive themselves, even when the God of the universe has. Posted by: kraken at October 11, 2022 11:18 AM (Vr12I) 88
Who was it, Peter Singer? (I suppose I could google) Who argued that logically, a baby wasn't fully a person until about the age of two, (I agree that there is a developmental point somewhere in there), so it would be ethical to kill a child up to that point.
But that's where the notion leads to when arguing that it's okay to kill a baby up to birth, because there is no objective difference between before birth and afterward when it comes to development or dependency. Science, you know. Posted by: Synova at October 11, 2022 11:18 AM (BD/yx) 89
We should be promoting this stuff.
I'd hazard that > 99% of the population would find abhorrent the idea that infanticide is justified whenever abortion is justified. But these "academics" claim to have a watertight argument that this is so. Therefore, anyone arguing for abortion has to make the same argument for infanticide. Own it. ++++ Oh, it will. It will come for the "non-productive elderly" before it gets there, but it will happen. The argument holds up no matter what, if you happen to be evil and disregard the value of individual human life. "As the state has an interest in old-age pensions, it is incumbent upon the state to regulate the consumption of pension benefits." There is a difference between euthanasia of the "unfit" and sterilization. Does the state, aka the taxpayer, have the right to sterilize either the parents or the actual children who are simply unable to raise children, but want to have them? IOW, does "three generations of imbeciles is enough" have any merit, or is the taxpayer on an endless hook? What about people who serially abuse their children? The state steps in there, although not often enough IMHO. Posted by: Archimedes at October 11, 2022 11:21 AM (ayzS/) 98

Peter Singer used to argue that it was "ethical" to kill a child up until the age of two because the child was a dependent who lacked the ability to articulate the abstract idea of its worth. He gave no thought to who, besides the parent, might value a 2-year-old's life. His sole consideration seemed to be whether an adult can get away with killing a family member.
This summer, a mother murdered her two-year-old son. The Detroit station let his 9-year-old cousin express his grief and how much he loved and would miss his funny, sweet-natured little cousin. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel Of course not. People like Peter Singer consider themselves "apex" humans. After all, they spend their lives lauded for their "achievements", even if said achievements are nothing more than superficial arguments in support of the eugenic state. So in his eyes, if he's going, the rest of us are going first. I'm ok with that though. The basic question becomes: Who determines whose life is worth living? And if your answer is The Government, then it's game over. That's why the Terri Schiavo case was so disturbing -- the family was devoted, the authorities wanted her dead. And that was back in the days when we had actual debate.
In the days of mandatory lockdowns and the destruction of generational businesses and livelihoods -- based on an injurious vaccine status -- I have little doubt the authorities would soon see anyone standing in the way of "progress" being labeled undeserving of life, and their malleable voters approving enthusiastically. Giving infants the death penalty reminded me of an article that described three purposes for incarceration: (1) punishment (2) rehabilitation and (3) separation from society. The article made the argument that (3) is the only one that's reliably achieved. If the purpose of prisons becomes understood to be protecting society from the criminal by separating the criminal from society, there could be some really interesting discussions around how the prison system would work. My baby sister has Downs Syndrome. She was born in the mid-1970s - born 2 months premature in fact. The fact she survived is a miracle in of itself.
When the doctors diagnosed her with Downs, they point blank told my parents that if they had known earlier, they wouldn't have fought so hard to keep her alive. They then tried to convince my parents to send her to an institution and forget her. She would never walk, never talk, etc. Anyone ever ask me who my heroes are? My parents, especially my mom. The intent here, and they will admit it outloud, is to eliminate Downs Syndrome from the population completely. They want genetic testing during pregnancy and mandatory abortion of babies with Downs. This is straight admitted as the policy goal. Their rationale is that someone with Downs has the same life expectancy as anyone else, so the state takes on the burden of care for them once the parent dies. Part of it may come from being exposed to so many different religious systems and the various schisms of religion over time breeds doubt in any 'true' religion.
That is part of the point that Ecclesiastes made--comparative study of philosophy or religion itself will not produce happiness because that knowledge will always be incomplete. The more you know, the more you doubt. ------- Especially today (where we drink news & digital infotainment from seemingly multiple firehoses), there seems to be a definite inverse correlation between (for lack of a better term) "knowledge" and wisdom. One look at our Ruling Caste "Elites & Experts" pretty much demonstrates the point ... When my son was in 4th grade at parochial school his religion homework was to ask one of his parents how their belief in Christ affected other people. I replied that my belief in a just God and my fear of hell saved many people's lives as about half the people I met in life really needed killing and my Christian belief prevented me from accommodating them. From the kitchen my wife screamed, "You can't tell him that." Today that boy is a USMC sergeant.

Defeat these people, then you can address abortion. Pouring your effort into the symptoms prior to the causes doesn't help defeat them particularly when it sets you against the nature of the lazy and entitled - which is one of their whole points for pushing this. The other big point: "185 I really don't get this Abortion craze other than the elites Don't want the population to grow and the poorest to expand." ... That is part of the point that Ecclesiastes made--comparative study of philosophy or religion itself will not produce happiness because that knowledge will always be incomplete. The more you know, the more you doubt. I always thought that the point of Ecclesiastes was that the godless pursuit of a meaningful life was vanity -- a chasing after the wind. His final conclusion being that the only thing that matters is a reverence for God. And it would seem to me that an in-depth study of the religious teachings across cultures -- if it were undertaken in order to understand God -- would quickly eliminate some of the sillier notions, and show ever clearer delineations between the gods espoused by different beliefs; characteristics that would rub against one's conscience and expectations of reasonableness in a Divine Creator, as well as rational determinations of the state of humanity. But you don't often see that. You see a Joseph Campbell universalism that has zero authority and reduces all to myth. Posted by: red speck at October 11, 2022 12:05 PM (gS3OW) 324

Yeah this isn't some super mysterious case where the state had to cobble together circumstantial evidence and guesswork to try to convince a jury. Its usually "this dude is a monster with a mountain of evidence of many, many heinous crimes" because the state typically does not ask for the needle unless they have a very, very strong case. Failing to bring a new person into existence cannot be compared with the wrong caused by procuring the death of an existing person. The reason is that, unlike the case of death of an existing person, failing to bring a new person into existence does not prevent anyone from accomplishing any of her future aims. However, this consideration entails a much stronger idea than the one according to which severely handicapped children should be euthanised. I've pointed this out before, but T4 was done to Germans, by German doctors, so the morality of racism was not involved - and the German people were not amused. The opposition to T4 was led by the churches, but it was a very unpopular program, and it was quietly "canceled," though it continued in secret to a lesser degree. Look at the United States by comparison. For just one example: prior to the early 2000s, my daughter's condition was difficult to diagnose in utero, due to more primitive ultrasound technology. Since that's changed, 80% fewer of these children are born - aborted to avoid a condition where 50% of those afflicted will lead normal lives, and fewer than a quarter will be severely disabled. Wrap your mind around that - the Germans of the 1930s were less morally degenerate than the Americans of today. Anyone who thinks it can't happen here is kidding themselves. It can. It will. This is a country primed and ready, and all it needs is an excuse. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at October 11, 2022 12:10 PM (oINRc) 344

Lab rats = what we're becoming, at a faster & faster rate.
This new power for women isn't really new at all but it's becoming more complete. Men are the problem; the 1st goal to reduce certain (most) men to the smallest possible numbers worldwide. What can't women do? They're certainly capable of being in war; preparing for, fighting in, killing and torturing. They always have been. Think: 6 years ago, President Barack Obama offered a detailed rationale for his decision to allow women to serve in combat career fields. Think 'don't ask, don't tell' is only for men in military? I don't think so. Let this continue for a # of years and certain girls and women will be reduced to being "handmaidens" for childbirth. And as it currently is, abortions provide fetal tissue for studies, experiments (good jobs!) & some (if not many) are radical. Someday not distant there will be readily available organs for implantation, maybe clones for the elites. But after all, children can be such expensive, time consuming pests, especially those with special needs - or now being readily categorized as such. Why not pretend they're not human? G-d help us. Might be better to use the terms reward and punishment. Since the merit thing sometimes gets mixed up with the proportion of which is due to generosity.
Reward and punishment are meant to generate certain behaviors. From a logical standpoint. hell is not a punishment in Calvinism as an individual in hell is made for it and could not alter their behavior. It's like a cheetah living in the savanna, that's their habitat. Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at October 11, 2022 12:31 PM (eYoxG) 460

You see, life is suffering, and you're trapped because you reincarnate. You reincarnate because you have attachments to the illusion that is reality. So to escape suffering, you must become enlightened, ie realize reality is an illusion and sever your attachments, ending your cycle of reincarnation. U.S. is 'influential' there, Ireland, and so many more. For example:
BBC News, 1 Oct: India abortion: Why Supreme Court ruling is a huge step forward. In part, While overturning of the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling was described as "a huge step back for women's rights", Thursday's order by the Indian Supreme Court - in contrast - is being hailed as "historic" and "a big step forward" for women's rights. The woman said she wanted an abortion because her partner had refused to marry her at the last minute and that having a child out of wedlock would open her to "social stigma and harassment". She also said that she could not afford to bring up a child because she did not have a job and did not come from an affluent family; and that she wasn't mentally prepared to raise a child. We'll see, but it's not being polled much. That means it's on no one's radar. The polls are all local, which raises doubts. And it's probably hard to get enough respondents in a small-ish district to get a good sample (assuming the modeling of the electorate is right).

That 'Let's Just Kill 'Em!" article is from 2012, and I could not see where to submit a very belated response, but I will just say: If we were going to buy into it, the first ones to go should be progressives, as they have been proven to be mentally ill far above the norm, and subject to depression. Obviously, their lives are not worth living. Poor dears, we should put them out of their misery.

No, of course it isn't. Only the left get's to decide who should live and who should die. Guilty of murder? Live! Guilty of nothing? Die.
