Wednesday Morning Rant [Joe Mannix]

mannixape2.jpg

Rise of the Skeptics?

One theme over the past five or ten years of news is the increasing loudness - and sometimes even progress or efficacy - of skeptics of various stripes. The backlash against them has been louder and sometimes more effective. The backlash from the various establishments has been so severe that the word "skeptic" has almost exited the common vocabulary. It has been replaced with "denier," uttered as a pejorative. According to the press, he who questions is now a monster who denies the obvious truth.

There are many major themes of skepticism that are given various names. There are the globalism skeptics, the Euroskeptics, the climate skeptics, the free trade skeptics, the COVID skeptics and more beyond counting. To a man, they are all described as deniers, as bigots, as fascists, as monsters of various stripes. Yet despite the establishment abuse, their numbers continue to grow. Their victories have been brief and rare so far, but any victories are notable.

The recent news has been awash with the rise of the Euroskeptics who question fealty to the European Union and support national interests over imperial European interests. The response is typical. They're all "fascists" and "nationalists" and dangerous elements that need to be stopped for the good of the Empire and all of its subjects. What started with UKIP - their approach being more radical than most of the others - has cascaded further as the disaster of EU policies has grown. There are now many governments - from Hungary to the immigration-focused government in Sweden to the recent election results in Italy, along with up-and-comers from Poland to Spain to the core of the EU in France and Germany that increasingly embody EU opposition.

Then, of course, there's our own story in this country. Trump's election was an anti-establishment backlash. It was in many respects a skeptic movement, a move against globalism, open borders and Washington power. Since then, there has been much action in the cultural realm, especially around transgenderism issues and abortion. Our form of skepticism manifests as general anti-establishment activity but the motivations are similar across the board. This is all summarized as "populism" - both here and oftentimes when it happens abroad - because it is so broad-spectrum.

Globally, there has been a hard core of COVID skepticism that has been growing to the point that it cannot be contained. Last year's wild conspiracy theories - from discussion of the virus' origins to questioning the government response to the outbreak to speculation about vaccine efficacy - are today's increasingly normal areas of conversation. The wave of skepticism is growing and is now to the point where articles that would get you unpersoned a year ago are now being carried in the Washington Post.

Throughout the developed world, anti-establishment tendencies and skepticism movements appear to be on the rise, whether they're articulated as such or not. Is it enough to matter? Can it be contained? Will it continue to spread? Will it result in meaningful, real changes in the political order?

I don't know. I hope so. Nonetheless, every victory is worth celebrating.

16 This is an interesting topic, especially as it relates to faith in God. Skepticism versus faith....

I think there's a scripture which says something like "cursed is he who putteth his trust in the arm of flesh." I.e. if we have faith in people or things here, we will be disappointed.

I think we are supposed to question and come to our own conclusions on things... but once we do, shouldn't we have the integrity to stand behind it?

Not sure how to have faith and yet be appropriately skeptical.

I think of skepticism as more "questioning." Like, when government says something, and you're pretty sure they're wrong about it.

When you are 100% positive that the government is lying its ass off 100% of the time, I don't know what you call that, but it's not skepticism. It's that thing where you're constantly saying "pull the other one, bunghole - it jingles."

We're heading somewhere. Maybe it will be better, maybe it will not. But if this keeps up, it will be *different* at very least. Being for something is quite a bit harder than being against something. The "against" crowd is getting loud, yes, but even that might be progress because they may be able to clear the obstacles. The vacuum has to be filled with something and that might be good or bad and the odds (just generally, in most things) are on bad - but the vacuum has to exist first.

37 The world we live in, its all too easy to be skeptical, cynical, sarcastic, and bitter. Just one quick example: a man kidnaps a teenage girl, the police find him and chase him down the freeway. Shots are exchanged, then a figure in tacticool gear jumps out of the passenger side, and runs toward the cops. The figure is shot down.

Its the girl, the victim of the kidnapping. She dies later in the hospital.

How can anyone have admiration or respect for an operation like the LA police?

But we cannot have a future that's solely based on cynical sneering bitterness. We have to have not just hope but respect, honor, and enthusiasm. We have to have at least some of that childlike wonder and amazement at the world. There's no way to build back what we had or move into the future constructively if all we are is skeptical and sarcastic.

It has to. They aren't even directly related. The contemporary left that controls all institutions is maximalist in much the way Mussolini's fascism was. "Everything in the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State" very much defines the norm. Skepticism aside, they *must* keep hoovering up new territories for control. It isn't so much a reaction to opposition as it is indifference to opposition. They will keep pushing. If they have to push on new fronts while maintaining old conquests, they will still try to do so - but they will never quit trying to expand, regardless of conditions.

55 "Populism" as currently used mostly defines how derailed, extreme, and false the general framework of public policy and "politics" has become.

It is used because it conveys a fairly negative sense of mob action, of unreasoning self-dealing or hysteria, or at least unsophisticated and emotional response. At least that's what it has meant most of my life.

Rule of law - in the streets, with respect to immigration, and much else. A border. Opposition to unreasonable regulation, and policies that impoverish or reduce freedom.

These are hardly "populist" in an historic sense. They're basic, common sense. The whole spectrum has shifted so radically that hum-drum banal verities are now deemed "populist".

57 Women have it especially bad in this culture. Women in the past have relied on male figures and leaders in their life to lean on and trust, in a dangerous world where they are outclassed physically and surrounded by bigger, meaner, stronger, more aggressive people.

Without that, who do they turn to and cling to? I think that this does explain why so many women are acting so crazy lately. They're like a dog so terrified and backed into a corner that it bites everyone, even those who come to help.

Then they find out that big daddy government not only cannot be trusted but is actively hostile and destructive? Like this bit of news recently: the "vaccine" can cause extended menstruation periods. Whee.

58 Another part to all this, human activity traditionally have different groups of people try different solutions to problems. This then allows you to compare and contrast how well they solutions work.

Republican America vs Aristocratic Europe
Christian Europe vs Muslim North Africa/Middle East
etc.

This let you have objective data. The current transnationalists have clamped down on that trying to force every country in the west to only use the same solutions. And there is only one answer for why - because the results for the solutions they are pushing will NOT be viewed as good by most people

It's lashing out to the extent that it's pointless. Vote to get out of the EU - you're staying in the EU. Vote to get secure borders, drain the swamp, etc. - Trump's getting investigated, impeached and removed by fraud.

And on and on. It's not there aren't ideas being proposed or applied (leave the EU, or build a wall, for instance).

It's that popular opinion doesn't matter to our ruling class. Until the proposed solution is "regime change," these movements are effectively just lashing out. That's through no fault of their own. People do have concrete changes in mind, but they don't have any means of implementing anything at this time.

101 Medical science has traditionally been a VERY weak science because of the complexity involved.

While there were attempts to add rigor in the recent past (what if we compare genetic profiles as part of drug trials?) it seems that as of now the medical establishment has instead just decided to abandon any pretense of repeatability and objective results.

For example, Pfizer claimed their were no impacts to pregnancy from the clot shot because they specifically didn't include pregnant women in the study they used. This is straight up fraud of course.

And again...no one went to jail or even got fired.

Right, like Shain said: trust in God.

Faith is faith no matter the object, its the same exercise. You have faith your wife isn't cheating on you while you're at work. You have faith your car will start when you turn the key (or push the button with the key nearby, etc).

The OBJECT of that faith is what determines its validity, consistency, and reliability. When God said "trust not in princes" He wasn't saying "trust nothing and noone" only to realize that human beings will ultimately always fail you. God will not and cannot.

Skepticism is at the very root of the scientific method. When properly used, it is embedded even in the specific work of the individual scientist. You don't set out to prove your hypothesis, you try to break your hypothesis. If you can't break it, others will try to do so.

If it were just that cohort of the populace, it would be manageable. It's been that way for most of my life. Lots of stupid or indefensible ideas or policies, but they generally weren't widely applied, or sustained.

Now, "climate" nonsense is being used, and has the potential, to radically reduce prosperity and freedom.

This would not be possible unless a lot more than "the low IQ leftist class" were supporting - or passively accepting - it.

Their early socialization was with a group of cohorts rather than a family unit. The usual process of children growing up and individuating from their parents in the teen years is replaced with a groupthink that ages right along side them. They simply can't or won't think for themselves.

189 I think the shingles shots are among the most useful. It can be a very nasty condition, and the shots are effective at reducing likelihood of it occurring. Flu shot? Meh. For exactly the same reason that C19 "vaccines", in general, are doomed to be of limited benefit. Pneumonia, haven't looked into those.

But one of the more shocking - which is saying something - signs of medical "science" being off the rails is this jaw-dropping thing about things like flu shots now being recommended *for kids*. Absurd. Even if the shots were effective, it would be a horrible idea in most cases.

None of this was even conceivable not that long ago. There are multiple axes of erosion, corruption, and degradation throughout society, and in technical and scientific areas.

Interesting. As a cop, I worked with a belligerent patient in a psych ward who was upset the staff wouldn't let him get his crystals out of his property storage to show the judge at court that afternoon. That would prove his sanity, so he'd be released.

Also, the nurses weren't real, because they didn't have the old-timey caduceus pins, which are given to them at graduation, and are made of pure silver to touch pills with and detoxify them before administering to patients.

He wasn't released early. I think he worked for Fauci years later...

231 Three more days. I can survive three more days in this hell hole that used to be a very friendly, caring neighborhood. Forty years ago, it was completely different. The four houses to the south of our property were all owned by members of one family, and the grandfather still ran the family. Almost all of the houses to the east of ours, both sides of the street, were owned by families who had lived there since WW II. All those families' kids had gone to South High and knew everyone east of 42nd Street. But the old families have died out, and those houses have become rental prperty. Do you know how many Mexicans you can stuff into an old three bedroom house? Nobody knows because there are too many to count, not to mention they come and go with no rhyme or reason. Formerly well tended yards have become garbage dumps -- literally.

I feel bad for our Florida Morons, and hope they come through Ian with the least bit of damage. But there is no hope for my neighborhood. Saturday, my kids and their friends are sweeping in to carry everything away. Forty years. Fingers crossed that half my new neighbors are retired Air Force and wouldn't know a Mexican polka if it bit them in the ass.

This not a new thing. Influenza vaccine has been recommended by pediatric groups such as the AAP for at least a couple of decades. There are some high risk groups where the benefits may be worthwhile, such as severe asthmatics, major cardiac defects, immunocompromised cancer patients. I do agree with you about it not being a good idea as a universal practice. I would venture to say that most pediatricians these days would give a flu vaccine to pretty much any kid whose parent requested it including infants, with dubious benefits.

It is just that I find the whole exercise pathetic. The point seems to be to find some way to shock and horrify exactly the same type of people (the film makers friends) as are depicted in the movies.

On the other hand, we are essentially watching this play out on the world stage with the trans mutilation drive for kids. I cannot help but think that the one leads to the other. I certainly cannot find any artistic merit there.

Horrors SHOULD be horrific. War SHOULD be terrible (to change RE LEE's quote slightly.) When they cease to be, very very bad things happen. Which I think we are witnessing.

254 So, if the Americans sabotaged the Nordstream gas pipelines, what happens next?

Assuming the US did it, did they tell the Germans beforehand? German media reported that the CIA warned the German government several weeks ago that sabotage was possible – one assumes that the CIA did not tell the Germans that it was the US planning to do the sabotaging.

The sabotage does remove a major point of leverage that the Russians had in trying to strike a deal with the EU over Ukraine – the US may have made the cold calculation that Germany and the rest of NATO are so dependent on the US militarily that they don’t dare complain.

The key issue is whether US complicity in the sabotage can be demonstrated or not – the NATO countries have a substantial incentive to cover things up. OTOH, if evidence arises that the Americans were behind this, expect a political explosion in Europe.

Who had the capability, and who had the motive?

Ukraine has the motive, but not the capability.

Germany and Russia don't have a motive, because they already separately can block flows through the pipeline.

EU and NATO aren't going to do anything without German permission.

Which leaves us - as the only party with both the capability and the motive.

Biden and Victoria Nuland's threats against the pipeline, and watching the neocons celebrate the sabotage of the pipeline, tells you everything to know about motive.

The great fear of the Ukraine-simps is that Germany would be willing to agree to a negotiated settlement with Ukraine in exchange for gas flows coming back on this winter, as Germany suffers mass unemployment and crippling energy shortages.

Germany has already been the most reluctant of the NATO countries in providing arms to Ukraine, and the most reluctant to demonize Russia, in part because of its energy vulnerability.

Blowing up the pipelines removes the ability of Russia to offer gas supplies to Germany, which makes a negotiated settlement over Ukraine much less likely.

No. Both pipelines were built by western contractors.
The pressurizing pumps on the Russian end, though, have suffered parts and maintenance issues, and were the first plausible stated reason for Russia to interrupt delivery. A sudden change in internal pressure, especially a drop, could cause failure of the pipe.

And of course, although it is inconvenient, even Danes, Germans and Italians can make mistakes.

They KNOW why costs are rising(energy based) and they have come out of their bubbles to recognize how weird and dangerous the Left really is.
