True, BUT, although I like what Maria has been saying on Fox lately ... she was part of the Big Money from WallStreet games thang. Her hubby was making bucks off ? I forget, Micron? (MU) back in the day, while she was on air. ... anyway, seemed a little dirty to me. BUT that was the way it worked ... and any of us with Mutual Funds were profiting, often as our nation was being sold out to China and BigCorp. And that game continues ... have You All sold your BigCorp stocks, divested into ? local enterprise and ? vodka in the basement? We did not sell China the rope to hand U.S., we bought them the rope, Hillary sold them the nuclear secrets, WallStreet sold them our industry, and all stockholders "Believed in The Dream" of free money from "Investing" in "globalism Utopia". sigh ... too dystopian? For the last half-hour or so, California has cut off all the electrical loads that agreed to be cut off in emergencies (and get paid for doing so). It is going to be very close today, and demand is supposed to be higher tomorrow. Stay out of elevators in the early evening tomorrow. Also I think the long wait times are partly due to the woofloo BS; it seems more people are buying beef and / or pork direct from the "manufacturers" so this is driving up demand at smaller processors.

Posted by: Axeman ------------------- As long as it does not violate provisions of the US Constitution or federal laws under the commerce clause which specifically preempt states from making such laws, CA can raise wages and control prices under 10th Amendment reserved powers for states to regulate health, safety, and welfare. At the risk of sounding like a moron that says "Akshully".
The quote by edison is misattributed. In September 1922 the expression was printed in “The Rotarian” magazine published by Rotary International. Many sayings were grouped together in a section called “Take It From Me—” by quotation collector and coiner Coleman Cox. The adage was finally credited Henry Dodd. Henry Dodd says, “The reason most people do not recognize an opportunity when they meet it is because it usually goes around wearing overalls and looking like Hard Work.” In later years the expression was assigned to other people, e.g., Paul Larmer, Lila Kroppmann, and Thomas Edison. Of course, when teachers go on strike [in Seattle] for better working conditions, they often face charges about them not actually caring about students. Hoban said that sentiment couldn’t be further from the truth. Advocating for better pay is far from selfish, she said. The union wants teachers to make enough money to live in their communities and stay at their schools as experienced educators. If the district refuses to pay a fair wage to its workers, Hoban said some of her colleagues will go to another district that will or else quit teaching entirely.

You'd have to check with the California Constitution.
It is our model of government that states are sovereign. I get the idea that states are sovereign, but for wage and price controls, the State must consider its sovereignty over the citizen to be absolute, so what is lost is the "Consent of The Governed", in that I, nor my neighbor has the ability to dictate to another man terms on which he may negotiate for labor and services. Since we as individuals don't have that right, how then can it be granted to the State? IOW, it appears that part of the sovereign state is the implied ownership and mastery over its i thought we fought a war over slavery. How is that still true in light of Wickard v Filburn? If an individual in a sovereign state couldn't feed his own chickens, how can a state manage a 10th Amendment claim? Posted by: Reuben Hick at September 05, 2022 11:03 PM (qibYB) 373

On August 16, a three-member presidential emergency board appointed by President Biden issued recommendations for the basis of a new contract. If the sides don’t reach agreement by September 15, rail workers can strike—a scenario that Rick Paterson, a rail analyst at the investment firm Loop Capital Markets who testified during the STB hearings, calls “economic WMD.”

allowing wage and price controls, etc, was all part of FDR's socialization of the 1930's.
Posted by: Tom Servo at September 05, 2022 10:27 PM (r46W7) Minimum wage and overtime were rules developed initially to exclude untrained labor out of the market. When the rules were set, the biggest suppressor of wages was availability of workers, at the time it was rural people moving to the cities to find work, generally unskilled, willing to work for lower wages since agricultural work was very poorly paid, and quite often, black. Overtime rules do not affect agricultural wages, and when the rules were first established federally, most agricultural labor was paid on a piece rate or contract basis. Davis-Bacon rules were established for the same reasons. Posted by: Kindltot at September 05, 2022 11:08 PM (xhaym) 389
The fallout of a prolonged strike would likely eclipse those from pandemic delays to ocean shipping because a foundational component of many supply chains would see its labor supply evaporate overnight, says Paterson. Ports would jam; trucking rates would soar; livestock would run out of feed. For that reason, Congress would likely intervene to delay or quickly end a strike, as it did during the last railroad strike in 1991. But lawmakers may not have much time: The deadline is just three days after the House of Representatives returns from recess.

We need to bring back the concept of outlawry, for desperadoes on the run from the law for violent crimes. "Wanted, Dead or Alive" posters, in post offices, and on the Internet. Open season on the perps for any civilian (just be certain of your ID, eh?). Civilians not required to accept a surrender, only law enforcement is obliged to accept a surrender. And, as in the Geneva Conventions, false surrender gets the perp a bullet, on the spot, no trial.

Posted by: Sock Monkey * Ungovernable at September 05, 2022 11:48 PM (3g0rF) About 250 PSI. Acetylene is a special case. Cylinders contain a absorbent packing saturated with acetone, and the acetylene is dissolved in that, like a giant aerosol can. Acetylene is inherently unstable, and if compressed "dry" in a cylinder to too great a pressure, can explode spontaneously. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 05, 2022 11:51 PM (i0hQB) 464

I accidentally fucked over a couple people at a self-service bar last night.
We stopped for the night at a casino hotel after a long, long day of loading/driving the U-Haul. After I got the toddler tucked in, I figured I'd go to the casino bar for a shot and a beer and then tuck myself in. I picked out the "secondary" bar casinos have, the one with video poker built in, where the real compulsive gamblers hang out, because those are always quieter and less hectic. A couple guys were sitting there hitting the machines, drinking beers. After ten minutes with no bartender, I found an employee and asked if I could get someone to serve a drink. "That bar is closed on Sundays. Only the main bar is open. Video poker only," he says. "Aw, c'mon," I reply, "those guys got served!" He perked right up, and that's when we figured out these bold gentlemen had been sneaking behind the bar and grabbing beers from the unattended mini-fridge. Who dares, wins (until some douchebag blows their cover). Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at September 06, 2022 12:49 AM (ZqvVs) 520

Have mentioned this before, but when I'd go to Jazzfest every year (late 80s/early 90s) I would survey the progam (it was up two 4-day "weekends" by then). About 80-90% of the talent was local. This of course included household names, but the amazing part were the dozens of great unkowns. And the gospel tent was often the best of all (all local churches).
Just perusing that program and attending the fest was a striking illustration of the unbelievable musical wonder that is (was?) New Orleans. Posted by: rhomboid at September 06, 2022 01:10 AM (OTzUX) 537

Miklos we (always met a friend and his wife, his father lived across the river, we'd stay there) rarely went on the actual weekend days, usually just Thurs and Fri. Saturday we'd do something else (like a swamp tour down in Slidell), and Sunday was for relaxercising (beignets you know where) after being up all night to see BB at Tip's, followed by Camelia Grill.
So we avoided the crowds, and the lines (back then). Even inside, we did not put a priority on the big names, as even on Thursday they'd have more of a crowd. Posted by: rhomboid at September 06, 2022 01:20 AM (OTzUX) 550

Of course a lot of that body's efforts have always been aimed at blocking adoption of borrow words, which has been a special challenge since WWII, when English was the language of everything dynamic and happening, from fashion to music to technology.
He masterfully wove into his commentary about a dozen French words and phrases we use in English. Whole thing, tongue in cheek, with Sevareid's trademark poker face delivery. >> hat a system like the universe cannot be completely described from within the system.
Godel's Incompleteness Theorems pretty much get you there already. There is no finite description of reality. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at September 06, 2022 04:09 AM (Mzdiz) 627
The point Desmet was making there goes beyond that. Consider "beauty". Say you see a beautiful sunrise, some beautiful landscape scene that causes some profound experience. Or say some passage of music that has some profound effect on you. Is there any rational, reductionist explanation for that? To even try diminishes the experience. Insty has a post about the coming railroad crisis. Someone in the comments said;

A lot of this has been coming in fast and furious, and I'm digesting it all. I need to do another Tedious newsletter update. Go to Steve Kirsch's Substack and start reading his latest posts. Also, Jessica Rose Substack. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at September 06, 2022 04:24 AM (Mzdiz) Posted by: m at September 06, 2022 04:30 AM (r8enq) 633
See this post in particular by Kirsch: https://tinyurl.com/2o7pg7kb Israel, belatedly, did a "secret" Covid vaccine safety review. They found they are unsafe an ineffective. And this is being covered up. They are concerned about legal issues. You know, having their asses sued off for pushing this poison on the public.
