Tomorrow is Labor Day. Here is how it became a national holiday.

Labor Day Only Became a National Holiday Thanks to a Deadly Railroad Workers' Strike
We all enjoy a three-day weekend, but let's not forget the people who died to make it happen.

Labor Day has always felt a little bit like Senior Skip Day from high school. A day off? Just because we labor? Makes you think we should have these three-day weekends year-round. But like so many American traditions, scratch the surface of this innocuous federal holiday and you’ll find rampant capitalism and bloodshed.

In the forgotten labor history of America, transportation has always played a big role. Decades before the UAW dragged the most powerful companies in the world to the bargaining table, there were the railroads and all the unions associated with their operation. The Pullman Railway Strike of 1894 would see 250,000 people walk off the job; federal troops broke the strike, with 30 people left dead. The reasons why those workers went on strike would be familiar to many of us today. Case in point, this political cartoon from a Chicago labor newspaper, which might as well have run in 2022:

If I were going to move, I would do a little research. Just a little. 700 Genius Award Winners.

Twelve individuals have been arrested and 30 are under investigation in Italy for having invented the “Antarctic Theocratic State of San Giorgio” with which they swindled about 700 people by promising nationality in order to be able to pay fewer taxes, have passports, land, and even receive noble titles.

The operation, called “The island that does not exist”, was launched by the Police of Catanzaro in the region of Calabria in April 2021 after a search of a property that had been indicated as the diplomatic headquarters of the fictitious state.

The criminal network made believe that this nation existed with autonomous sovereignty and privileges “by virtue of the Antarctic Treaty of 1959” and took care of the procedures for granting citizenship to whoever requested it, in exchange for between 200 and 1000 euros.

On August 30, an unidentified delivery driver for Amazon saw smoke rising from a home and called 911.

Although there were no people in the home at the time, three Boston terrier dogs were present – and thanks to her quick thinking they were all saved.

"During a structure fire yesterday, 3 puppies were saved and revived from smoke inhalation," the Columbia County Fire Rescue said in a Facebook post. "Thank you to the Amazon driver who noticed the smoke and called 911. Since the homeowner was not at home at the time, she saved the home and the puppies lives!"

How false is the flag?

An extremist, white nationalist hate group marched through the streets of Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon while chanting, carrying signs and beating drums.

Video given to CBS4 taken by a witness downtown shows around 50 white males dressed in khakis, dark shirts and face coverings roaming the city streets. The extremist group Patriot Front has claimed they were the organizers of the march on their account on the social media site Telegram.

Accompanied by drums and banners, the marchers could be heard yelling “America for Sale” and “Reclaim America,” which Wikipedia lists as the Patriot Front’s main motto.

Seems our little miscreant had a fake ID (side note, the general consensus was he must have really f'd up to get snagged for a fake ID since its so common), which is usually a ticket and fine, but then he tried to just walk away from the cops issuing the citation.

Of course the usual RAAAAACIST!!! charges were leveled against the cops...

A movie I love is "The End" with Burt Reynolds and Dom Deluise. Burt breaks Dom out of a mental institution so he will help him commit suicide, so Dom keeps trying to kill him but Reynolds keeps changing his mind.

So at one point he's going to push him out the third story and Reynolds says "i dunno, I don't think it's tall enough". He steps aside just as Dom tried to push him off - Dom falls out the window, and then is laying flat on the concrete beneath him. And he yells up "YOU'RE RIGHT IT"S NOT TALL ENOUGH!!!" before he passes out.

164 David Frum has an article up in the Atlantic, explaining what a disaster Trump's speech in Wilkes-Barre was.

Why, Trump denounced Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's largest city! That's sure to lose votes in Pennsylvania, obviously!

A well-funded independent candidate for Oregon governor referred to Portland as "The City of Roaches", a play on Portland's slogan: "The City of Roses".

All the Usual Suspects were outraged by this, ignoring that 85% of Oregon's population doesn't live in Portland, and a lot of the 85% don't like Portland very much. Running against Portland in Oregon is probably a vote-getter, just like running against Philadelphia in Pennsylvania is probably a vote-getter.

The stabbings took place in multiple locations on the James Smith Cree Nation and in the village of Weldon, northeast of Saskatoon, police said.

244 I've read that, and also recall reading that while in the Army, U.S. Grant was considered the best poker player any of his fellow officers had seen.

Isoroku Yamamoto was assigned to the Japanese embassy in Washington for a couple of years in the 1930's and traveled around the US a lot.

One of the reasons why he thought Japan couldn't beat the United States is that the open, friendly American naval officers that he associated with turned into the most scheming, duplicitous, expert liars imaginable when you sat them down at a poker table. Yamamoto thought that the US would come up with some very nasty surprises in wartime.

245 Chileans voted down a new proposed constitution by nearly a 2-1 margin. The proposed constitution was written by a cabal of Leftists, was 160 pages long (the longest constitution on earth), and of course included every "right" under the sun, with extra representation for anyone who claimed to be indigenous, mandatory 50% female representation on all public and private boards and in the senior management of all public and private organizations, and on and on and on.…

It would be a pretty typical day in DC in August, but here - wow.

I keep searching but in vain, on the state guvamint website, for the refund form I can file. Because weather is the only reason I'd ever have returned or live here (that, and the ocean and other geography - all the stuff that cannot be screwed up - or in the case of weather, affected at all, for all the vapid climate cultists out there, including "scientists"). Figured there must be some kinda refund option.

Having worked on both, I can attest that the Bug is more maintainable, hence a lower maintenance hour to flight hour ratio, which is eventually the 'cats downfall. Carrier aviators will be familiar with the term "Tomcat Creep" in which broken Tomcats eventually fill the hangar bays, especially towards the end of cruise.

Tom was still a much better looking airplane in the wind though, IMO. And faster. With a better radar. And longer range.

353 The F-14 was always multi-role, the software for bombing was always in the computers starting with the prototypes. It was just the Navy decided they need a Fleet defender first.

In the 2000s after the Great LANTIRN Caper, any Tomcat could deliver smart ordinance. Just the A models could not deliver JDAMs. The RIO's TID gave way to the PTID that was this honking great screen that gave the RIO almost a god's eye view of the target. F-15E Strike Eagle WSOs could discern the building they were bombing, the F-14's PTID allowed the RIO to literally select the window to drop the bomb through.

The last combat deployment of the F-14D saw one squadron deploy ROVER which allowed them to share real time imagery with those on the ground they were supporting. Those last two squadrons with their 22 F-14Ds saw better than 90% serviceabilty.

Side note, one of those two squadrons (VF-31, appropriately named the Tomcatters) was my first squadron.

Serviceability rate is a fun game. A partially mission capable aircraft (meaning it can leave the deck if it needs to even if it can't perform all of the missions) counts as just as serviceable as a fully mission capable jet. I have no doubt that the high serviceability rate on that last cruise was due to the surplus of available parts because the other squadrons had been transitioned to the E/F Hornet (which IMO should carry a different designation due to it being a completely different, although visually similar, airframe).

I once left a pickup truck unlocked in Memphis, and nothing bad happened to it. Of course it was an ancient rusty 62 (this was in 1990). People mostly steal cars just to ride around in or to strip for parts, and no one wanted to be seen in this beast and it didn't look to have any parts worth stealing.

IIRC I even left the keys in it, although all you needed to start it was a flat blade screwdriver. I don't think I'd try that with anything I own today though.
