Top Story

  • Twitter had a new plan to fight "extremism" - then Elon Musk arrived. (The Verge)

If you're guessing that "extremism" means normal people opposing fascist lunatics and the "new plan" was more annoying popups and account bans, then you're absolutely correct.

The first cool part is that Elon's bid to buy Twitter caused so much chaos internally that the plan was still-born, with management decisions delayed and many of the key censors fleeing the company for even shittier fields.

The second cool part is that an upset would-be censor who tweeted their wish that current CEO Parag Agrawal and former CEO Jack Dorsey "all fall down a very long flight of stairs" was reported for threatening a co-worker and fired.

Tech News

  • I've ordered a Lenovo Tab M10 FHD Gen 3 as an update to my Lenovo Tab M10 FHD Gen 2. It's about the same size and weight, and has only a minor screen upgrade, but it ships with Android 12 rather than Android 9 and has two A75 cores which blow the A53 cores on the older model out of the water.

Also it was on sale and my old tablet is in a box somewhere and I can't find it.

  • The commenters over at Ars Technica are too deranged for me to deal with today.

  • USB 4 version 2 also does 120Gbps - in one direction. (Angstronomics)

And 40Gbps back. This is very handy if you want to dock your laptop with an 8K 120Hz screen with integrated I/O and networking. Not that there are a lot of such monitors available - precisely zero as at the time of writing - but since USB 4 version 2 isn't out yet either that's not a huge problem.

The article also notes that although USB 4 is very new, Thunderbolt 3 (which USB 4 is based on) delivered 40Gbps speeds all the way back in 2015, so this speed increase has been a while coming.

  • Sony's Xperia 5 IV is basically a smaller version of their Xperia 1 IV. (Liliputing)

While a 6.1" screen isn't small, the device is basically all screen, making it similar in size to 5.5" phones from three or four years ago.

It also comes with a 1/8" headphone jack and a microSD slot, two endangered species in the phone space.

Not cheap though at just under $1000.

  • Shot / chaser.

Ugh. Twitter being Twitter, it clips that image right at the punch line.

Well, I didn't get to the ONT tonight -- we wuz doing some bread 'n' butter pickles, and that took a while, much longer than we thought, but all complete and cooling now.

And lo and behold, on said ONT, I see some stuff bordering on antiorkatism, and perhaps some disparagement of Clempson Cow Collidge.

They ain't gonna have any okra to burn, or much of any other crops, 'cause that nat gas is what makes nitrogen fertilizer. They are fucked.

Note, due to Green shit, they destroyed all their coal plants, and nearly took all their nuclear off line as well. The Nat gas was the stop gap on the way to all that Green Power to get online, windmills and solar. Just a stop gap on the way to Green energy nirvana.

Well, it didn't work out too well.

94 Pretty good. The misses's cancer is still in remission. She got a new doctor after the last one "fired her" for having the temerity to want to have a say in her own healthcare.

That doctor had a pretty good scam going. Has his own quick clinic, lab section for blood work and CT and X-ray machines.

I got a part time job at the country club where I play golf, cleaning up the golf carts. Gotta pay for my habit somehow.

Germany uses about 1/3 of it's natgas for heating. The rest goes into its basic chemical production which in turn goes into its manufacturing. No natgas, no basic chemicals. No basic chemicals, no manufacturing. Hard times are acomin'.

Also I highly recommend that sidebar piece.

That's great! I quit some years ago and aside from the extra 10 pounds or so, I'm very glad I did. You will eventually get to a point where the cigarettes are no longer a part of your daily routine and you have stopped thinking about them. That's when you'll realize that you truly are an ex-smoker. Don't ever go back--you got this!

I put an app on my phone called "Quit It" that tracks how many cigarettes you would have smoked, how much money you've saved, and the health benefit benchmarks you reach with each passing week of not smoking. You just put in the day you quit, how much you used to smoke a day, and the cost of cigarettes in your area. I still look at it once in a while and I am astonished at the amount of money saved. I could buy a sports car, take a cruise...

188 I’ve been saying that it’s not a matter of if our system would fail but when our system would fail,” Mr Lumumba, the city’s mayor since 2017, said.

This week, Jackson’s O.B. Curtis Water Plant, which has been in service for around three decades, broke down due to a massive influx of floodwaters. This may not have been as much of an issue for a newer facility, but before this recent failure, the plant was already running on backup pumps.

So for 5 years they knew it was broke and did not do a damn thing!

Democrats have ran the city since 1989. The plant was built when the last (R) was in office and never maintained since then!

Fuck them!

264 Chores be here.
Have a great day, everyone.

There was movement under the table, a small fleshy kind of noise and the drunk suddenly bent forward, colour draining from his face. Probably only he and Moist heard Miss Dearheart purr: ‘What is sticking in your foot is a Mitzy “Pretty Lucretia” four-inch heel, the most dangerous footwear in the world. Considered as pounds per square inch, it’s like being trodden on by a very pointy elephant. Now, I know what you’re thinking: you’re thinking, “Could she press it all the way through to the floor?” And, you know, I’m not sure about that myself. The sole of your boot might give me a bit of trouble, but nothing else will. But that’s not the worrying part. The worrying part is that I was forced practically at knifepoint to take ballet lessons as a child, which means I can kick like a mule; you are sitting in front of me; and I have another shoe.

Melb is kind of a college town and has a lot of nice areas and activities. Brevard also has a surprisingly active amateur astronomy club.

There are better places to live in Brevard county. North of Titusville. Just south of Melb is Sebastian which is just starting to grow and is still nice.

Bank log-ins require Javascript to run. If you are using Brave, just tell it to "always" allow scripts for this one site (bank). Works fine for me.

393 I have a question. I currently have a video card with 2G video RAM (GDRR3). I've come into possession of one with 4G video RAM (GDRR5).

What gains would I get with the extra 2 gigs? What software would take advantage of it? I'm not a gamer (unless Solitaire counts). I do a lot of work in PhotoShop and a few animation packages (Flash, Maya). Is the extra RAM going to help with those?

The 2G is a Nvidia GeForce GT 710

The 4G is a Nvidia Quadro K1200

Probably no gains that you could measure unless you are playing some of the newest video games.

Maya could show some improvements if you have extremely high poly count on some of your models.

Photoshop might show some improvements if you are working with extremely high-resolution images.

The Flash animation engine won't change performance at all.
