Mowed the sadly neglected back 40 today. The grass grows so evenly that it looks shorter than it actually is. Sitting on the mower, parts of grass were at eye level. So it took a very long time, looks patchy and horrible and I took a beating. We also expanded the puppy pen today more than doubling its size. The babies, who turned two months yesterday, loved it. Some Chinese propaganda makes America look cool. Other propaganda, though, just leaves you saying, "Huh?"
The YouTube channel The China Show featured a video in their show a few weeks ago that displayed just how lame the CCP's propaganda can be. The focus was an Uncle Sam Airlines (or something like that; I can't remember the exact name), with a male and a female flight attendant talking about all of the advantages of picking the US for your travel needs. And then they'd mention the costs that would be inflicted on you for the flight. The whole thing was horribly cringey, and primarily only watchable in a "I'm sticking with this only to see just how bad it gets" sort of way. It also demonstrated that the CCP really doesn't understand the US. Posted by: junior at September 02, 2022 10:22 PM (PTw5h) 71

I think MoronRobbie was talking about sand in the earlier thread.
There's an interesting anecdote that happened during World War II. Seems the Japanese were launching balloons from their home islands, filled with explosives, that were intended to land in the continental United States, and some of them did. They even caused some casualties and deaths. The US government placed a high emphasis on secrecy about the threat, not wishing to provide any "feedback" on how successful (or not) the program was. There was also concern about starting forest fires through similar means, requiring resources and manpower in short supply. ANYWAY - the balloons used sand as ballast. Working with various university geologists, the government analysed the sand, and through very tedious and laborious processes, as well as some covert sampling, managed to figure out what specific beach area in Japan the ballast was coming from. Then they bombed the $&@t out of the most likely factory location from aerial photographs. Result? No more 'splodey baloons! Ain't that a cool story about sand? I'd never heard the story about bombing the ballast/balloon factory (presumed) for Operation Elephant, Japan's trans-Pacific firebomb project. I believe the only fatalities were from a family that found the ordnance while hiking or camping, and (!!!) picked it up.
There was a firebombing/wildfire starting attack in southern Oregon by a submarine-based Japanese aircraft. I think it started a small fire, no big deal. There's a monument to the incident at the location, and I think the Japanese pilot himself attended the dedication, sometime in the 90s. In an OR state park. Japs had enormous special subs, still under construction or not yet fitted out at the surrender, which would carry aircraft, designed to attack the Panama Canal. Torpedoes into the lock doors. Again, very clever. Posted by: rhomboid at September 02, 2022 11:23 PM (OTzUX) 255

Dave, you probably have heard of the movie "1941".
Well the "inspiration" for it was in fact real, to an extent. "The Battle of Los Angeles" - basically a bunch of spooked trigger happy anti-aircraft gunners filling the night sky with fire. But why so spooked? This occurred a day after a Japanese submarine artillery attack on an oil installation at Ellwood, just west of Santa Barbara. And there was some possible innocent trigger as well. Anti-submarine aircraft flying in from the east coast, but who hadn't informed destination airfield of their schedule (something like that, story is in "The Burning Shore" by Edward Offley - pilot involved later made the connection). Anyway, another obscure bit of stateside WWII history. a girlfriend's mother grew up on a ranch not far from Ellwood (and near the site of Reagan's ranch). She said sheriffs came around to tell everyone to black out their windows, and make sure everyone had shotgun ammo. Local men set up road check-points. Wood from the oil pier until not long ago was part of a restaurant - "Timbers" in Goleta just north of SB. Needed a ratchet sector for the parking brake lever. Borrowed one from another car, laid in a sheet of steel, and used a spray to stencil its outline on the blank. Used recip saw, hacksaw, die grinder, bench grinder, drill press and files to make a duplicate...which works. Got the clutch cable in, but will have to take the pedal cluster out again to fit a different gas pedal. And the front axle beam is painted, and ready to hang on the floor pan. Great times in NC. Most of my experiences were in Eastern NC. And when I say East I mean East if I 95. Whenever anyone asks me where I would want to live I tell them (actually I unusually don’t) I need a location and a date.
Sure San Diego in the 70s. Sure NC and Virginia in the 80s. San Antonio in the late Eighties as a last hurrah. These are major generalizations. But for those specific places yeah, I stand by that. One last one is Northern Virginia in the late 70s. It is funny that even then it was Dem and statist. But what that meaned back then was vastly different. We have a short run in this world and the one thing do know is you can’t spend it pleasing a parent or anyone else. Even the great ones are as full of shit as anyone else.

I wrote a poem about two guys, a brit and a german, on opposite sides of the battle of britain (AA gunner and bomber pilot) who end up becoming becoming great-grandfathers through the same great grandson, and this led them to each have their own kind of closure at the end of their lives. I wasn't intending for the poem to be about that but that's how it ended up. I want to write it up as a play.

I rolled up no few miles in my Dad's '73 Pinto Runabout. (that's the one with the whole-hatch sized rear window, btw)
Four on the floor, 1.6 L four banger.. know what? He got 300k + miles out of that thing before the floorboards rusted out, and it was all Energizer Bunny, just kept going. Smooth shifting, adequate power, better handling than you might expect. Was a FAR better car than the later Chevy Chevette. America wasn't good at small cars just then, just yet. But the Pinto was better than it's reputation, wasn't a rustmobile with a Vega grenade-engine, and even the two decade later K car, really was only "even with" the Pinto, but certainly not "better". Ah, hell. Just gimme a Nash Metropolitan, and we'll call it even. And we had the son of a U-boat crewman here, haven't seen him much in a while. Capt. Charles. Said his dad was in a boat in the Baltic, thus much better chance of surviving. Small world, or historically small world, or something. Posted by: rhomboid at September 03, 2022 01:28 AM (OTzUX) 445

..Mustang II's suffered from the "roller skate" look. Large-ish car sitting on dinky little wheels. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 03, 2022 01:13 AM (TPGxl)
'Twasn't just the "wee little wheels" syndrome. But it was also the front and rear overhang. One of the things that makes a BMW look "muscular" is how far and wide to the front, that the front wheel wells, wheels and tires crowd into the furthest corners of the car. Now, look at any Fox Body mustang. Wheel arches start basically at the front edge of the front door, and there's more than 18" of "overhang" past the front of the wheel arch itself. Probiscus nosed car, looking weird with all of it's wheels tucked up tight under it's belly, and not in a four wheel crouch, like a BMW. Common on front-wheel drive cars, and ??? on a RWD Mustang. '05 and later, they cured this malady, and current Mustangs are works of the carmaker's art. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at September 03, 2022 01:31 AM (tkOps) 449

Jack Smith, who created the Roadrunner out of MoPar's parts catalogue one boring afternoon, started out at Studebaker. At the time the Lark (which wasn't really a "compact car") was being set up, he worked up a personal project mini station wagon called a "Scotty," a nickname derived from their super-economy Scotsman truck. It utilized a lot of body panels from existing models, because new sheet-metal dies were seen as a prohibitive expense at The Old Firm, but stuck together at odd new angles.
It was funny looking, but not as odd as a Metropolitan, and only sort of roller-skaty. Much like the Lark, if built it would have been a whole order heavier than the next generation of little cars. Kind of a forerunner of the AMC Pacer and Eagle, it probably would have gotten laughed at a lot and then, years later, strangely newly respected as "ahead of its time." I found another upside: the baby butchers over at PP latching onto gender ideology madness has some AWFLs really upset. https://pitt.substack.com/p/the-us-tavistock There is no downside here, at least. A lesser investment would pay more in the long-run. The only advantage with the rig is overcoming low water pressure. Posted by: Slapweasel at September 03, 2022 03:04 AM (Ckg4U) 524

Lol, I had Mrs B in bewilderment today with one of my remodel tricks. I had to reconfigure the wiring in a wall that never had cabinets. There were 2 outlets in the wall that can't be covered, and I needed outlets in the backsplash area, so I had no choice but to remove the sheetrock to raise the outlets. Mrs B asks if we need to make a run for sheetrock. I said hell no. I marked the wall, used a multi tool to cut along the center of the beams, then across at the height I needed, then used a magnet to find all the sheetrock screws, used a screw driver to pop out the spot of spackle covering the screws and took them out with the screw gun. It came out in one piece, did my wiring, laid the sheetrock back in where it was, screwed it back in an inch or so from the old holes, and taped it. The cabs will hide it anyway. She looked at me like I made an elephant disappear.
