Prayer Requests: 7/16 –AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update. ellipse (…asked for prayers for a work friend (of 18 years) and fantastic young lady named Lauren, who has been sick and away from work for 3 months.
8/20 Update – Lauren is back at work and sounds very good and very upbeat. Thank you for your prayers. 7/18 – Emmie asked for prayers for God’s guidance and His will do be done regarding the sale of their house.
7/28 Update – The potential buyer decided it wouldn’t work for them. The house is officially listed (in a semi-rural area of Colorado). She would appreciate prayer that God would bring together the property and the people who can make good use of it.
8/24 Update – Emmie needs prayers. There are still no offers on their house, and they really need access to the money tied up in it. They did meet with an investor, expecting a lowball offer that might be somewhat reasonable, but it was ridiculous. 7/26 – Nurse Ratched asked for prayers for Ann (Empire1), who had a fall recently and is in ICU. She is recovering but has a long row to hoe.
8/1 Update – Rehab is on hold until she is more stable. Her AFIB with high heart rate and significant edema have been way too stubborn, plus they found another infection. Thanks for the continued prayers!
8/23 Update – Ann has Covid on top of everything else. Her generalized edema grows slowly worse as her heart and kidney failure progress. Nurse Ratched prays that God holds Ann in His embrace and minimizes her suffering as nature takes its course. Thank you to all Ann’s online friends for lifting her up in prayer.
8/26 Update – Ann Wilson has passed away. She so loved her AoS community! Thank you for her friendship – it meant so much to her. 7/30 – Moki asks for prayers. Her cancer surgery has been postponed for 4 months so she can go through a series of extremely invasive and even 1 dangerous test, to prove that she will wake up from anesthesia. If she refuses the tests, they refuse to perform the cancer surgery. Her cancer is renal cell carcinoma, localized to one kidney at this time.
8/15 Update - Moki is having surgery today (8/15) to remove the tumor from her kidney. Please pray that the surgeons remove every trace of cancer, and for complete healing. And also for Mr. Moki and their two children.
8/17 Update – Moki is home from the hospital, earlier than expected. Thank you for all the prayers, she knows they have helped tremendously. 8/4 – Defenestratus asks for prayers for his young cousin, who was rushed to the hospital for another case of myocarditis. It’s his second episode since he got the vaccine (after having had Covid). He’s incredibly smart, athletic, driven, as well as humble and kind.
8/20 Update – Thank you for the prayers. His cousin is out of the hospital again and into his dorm at the University of Florida. 8/9 – Fenelon Spoke asks for prayers for her church organist, Jessie, who is having pain and intestinal issues. Thanks so much! 8/10 – Aetius451AD would appreciate prayers for his aunt, who is going in for surgery for cancer. They think it has not spread and they can remove it all without chemo. 8/11 – Danger Girl asks for prayers for herself and Mr. D. They need prayers for guidance and health. 8/11 – “Ray Epps” (aka Bete?) asked for prayers, as his job hunt is about to break him. He is still dealing with cancer, too. 8/12 – Jim in Kalifornia needs prayers for his older child. He has been having issues with abdominal pain for a couple of months now and the doctors cannot find anything. Jim was looking through the lab results and just found something the doctors may have missed. 8/13 – Several people requested prayers for Donald Trump and his family. 8/13 – Mindful webworker asked for prayers for family members. Milady Jo’s health has improved a bit, but there’s still good reason to pray for longstanding problems. Daughter and her husband are still trying to conceive. SonM could use better health. SonC, his wife, and their two under-5yo children continue to refuse calls, texts, and emails. Pray for the Spirit of Truth to reach them both. 8/15 – Cosda asks for prayers for her sister, whose regularly scheduled colonoscopy revealed a problem. The sister will be having her ascending colon removed next week. It seems to be early in the cancer stage and contained. Prayers are appreciated by the family.
8/25 Update – The surgery went well, thank God. They are praying that the lab results show that they got all the cancer. 8/15 – Pug Mahon asked for prayers, as his wife was in ER with possible appendicitis.
8/20 Update – Pug and Mrs. Mahon appreciates the prayers, and she is doing fine. 8/15 – Westminsterdogshow asked for prayers. He had lost his dad today. 8/19 – mngiggle requested for prayers for his brother, who is in the ICU for pneumonia and possibly sepsis. 8/20 – Brave Sir Robin asks for prayers for Lady Robin. She was having serious lower G.I issues, and has been through medical testing from hell this week. Indicators so far are: fatty liver disease, collapsed gall bladder, thickened intestinal wall, and finally, a common but wicked virus called C.Diff. She is on antibiotics for that. 8/20 – Blake – semi lurker in marginal standing asked for prayers before his upcoming surgery (Tuesday). It involves a general anesthetic, which is where problems could occur, based on his other health issues.
8/23 Update – Surgery went well, and he came through the anesthesia okay. 8/20 – Joan asks for prayers for Gary, her husband, who has a lung infection, complicating his COPD. He is in acute rehab now with high CO2 levels, which impacts his mental state. Pray for salvation assurance and healing of the lung infection. 8/21 – Moron and on and on asks for prayers for Chuck’s Bethie. Her chemo has failed, the cancer has spread, and the doctors have nothing else. She is resigned to end stage care when it comes, but was enjoying this life. Chuck needs prayers, too, in losing a daughter. 8/22 – Romeo13’s son needs prayers. He is 31 years old, suddenly suffering from angina, after getting 3 of the clot shots. 8/23 – Javems is in pulmonary rehab for a while. It will be several hours each week. 8/25 – Sock Monkey asks for prayers for the oldest son of some dear friends. He had a promising career started as a pastor in SE Washington, that ended the day he received his second Pfizer shot. He has been on a rollercoaster of progress and neurological setbacks since then (last May). This morning he woke up confused and disoriented. His wife took him to ER, and they transferred to ICU and induced a coma. The prognosis is not good. He and his wife have two young sons; please pray for them all. 8/27 – Iowaan asks for prayers to remember his wife of 32 years, Sharon, and the light of his life. She died at age 63 last year on 10/18 from kidney failure caused malnutrition, caused by cancer on her tonsil, probably caused by 50 years of heavy smoking, which spread to a lymph node under her jaw. Radiation, chemo, and surgery left her cancer free, but with extreme difficulty swallowing. She developed several mouth and throat infections, and at the end was living on a tablespoon of soup each day. 8/27 – Reuben Hick asked for prayers for the new neighbor, whose house burned down. 8/27 – Katja asked for prayers for the court date this week, which will hopefully bring some order to the chaos for the kids. 8/27 – The_Hoser would appreciate prayers for his 10-year-old daughter to continue to get involved at the church. She and Mrs. Hoser volunteered at the church’s VBS last week, and had a blast. 8/29 – Bete asks for prayers, as he has a pre-interview screening call. I've had this issue before. It's actually less sinister than you think. Basically, the bank wants to make sure your browser is compatible with their code. Unfortunately, some places only test with the popular browsers.
Anyway, they have a whitelist of browsers based on information received from the browser (basically the browser version information). Pale Moon and Brave are sometimes not on the whitelist.
That said, you can get Pale Moon and Brave to send the version info of the browser they're forked from. I forget the process, but I recall it's pretty simple (you need to manually enter some information).

She missed a day of class at college, and her original lodging fell through, so quite a bit going on, but she found a temporary place and is filling out apartment applications.
Once she get settled, only one left in the nest, a high school senior. While it was just the three of us, food consumption cut us down to only 3 meals a week. Leftovers covered the rest.
I'm liking this, especially with food prices going up.

I used to have a college football team that I was a big fan of. I went to a lot of their games. Had their t-shirts, watched them on tv.
Then a couple of years ago the football players started leading black lives matter marches and having rallies on campus.
Also wearing blm stuff on their uniforms.

Big Dutch population in West Michigan. Most GOP which is why Peter Meijer getting whacked in a primary was big news.
The east side is more varied, but has a pronounced Catholic component to it. Thus, east-side fundraisers tend to have liquor whereas west side are mostly beer.
This translates into party preferences: Democrats hit the hard stuff, Republicans prefer beer. I mentioned this to a veteran politician who had to blink before admitting it was true.
Also why our liquor laws are so screwed up here.

I think it is much better. The vast majority of college football players will not go pro. Even in elite schools, most won't get drafted and bunch who do will get cut even then.
What that means is that the bulk of the teams (especially in the weaker schools) are there for the fun of it. People forget that part - it's a one-time chance for men to push themselves and experience competition on a big stage. They will never get anything like it.
Plus there's the secondary part of it, like cheerleaders, pep squads and bands. I wouldn't trade marching at half time for anything. Such a great (and fleeting) experience.

Tolkien himself thought it was impossible to film, so sold the movie rights for a few thousand dollars to Saul Zaentz.
Ralph Bakshi did an interesting (but flawed) film version that got halfway there, and Peter Jackson used that is the basic for his own film (there's a youtube showing the shot-for-shot duplication).
When the new movies succeeded, Tolkien's estate decided they may as well sell the rest of the rights and supposedly safeguards were put in place. Obviously these were ignored.

For years players didn't even need to be students. There are "championship" teams with players whose names are uncertain. You think the portal is bad? Players used to swap teams *during the season*.
What is different is that it is more transparent and democratized. The collectives mean that players with no hope of NFL play time still make some money. Given that football pays for the entire athletic department (thus all wimmen's sports), that's fair.

There is a really interesting argument that at least some of the strains of flu are bimodal, if they encounter one antibody they will express a different coat to get around the antibody, to avoid prior resistance
I gave up on flu shots because every year they trumpeted they had administered more shots and claimed success, and then explained they had got the strain wrong so everyone got sick anyways, fortunately it was a mild flu year.
I wish I could succeed like that.

I'm probably going to do the alumni game later this month. It was something that sticks with you. Hard to explain all the work you put into it and yet I still remember that first game, coming out of the tunnel to 75,000 screaming fans to trying desperately not to say "OH SHIT" and freeze in place.
Got to march at Notre Dame, Indiana, and of course Michigan. We were on a shoestring budget back then. Kids today have it too good.

That was annoying, but I held on through in part because my wife is a Super Fan and so she got me to keep going. I didn't like the second film and hated the third.
I got dragooned into going to Star Wars VII but drew the line. Refused to see VIII and even she checked out in IX. My wife is somewhat of a tomboy as are the girls - they like anime, shooter games, Star Wars, superheroes, etc.
I just write books and read Evelyn Waugh.

I'm thanking you! I'd been putting it off and needed to make a decision.
I last marched in 2019 (right after my heart issue) and it was great. I came home worn out but happy. So nice to see old friends, sing the old songs, play as a band again.
And be totally laid back about it. When you're young, it's all "MOVE! RUN! NO WALKING!" and now we just sort of amble into position and give it a half-assed try. Very chill.

I hold everyone's writing to be sacred. If you wish to make something else of it, that can worked out in a mutually satisfying commercial manner. But it doesn't change what is and is not. I saw the films of Tolkien to be something other than Tolkien, and I just discarded them as meaningless to me. I'd like to think Tolkien would have done the same, if he had been open to the commercial arrangement.

I've turned into one of those grumps (not our Grump) who doesn't much care for CGI computer shite in movies. The more visually stunning the graphics, the more I think about actors in warehouses, in front of green screens, miming their action of poking monsters with spears, shooting non-existent flaming arrows, and flying around with a string tied to their arses.

Thank you so much for your prayers! We are now under contract. We should know for sure if the deal will hold up by Sept. 12. The buyer is an investor who made an offer sight-unseen and can back out if they don't like anything in the inspection report. However, they buy places to fix and flip, so maybe various inspection issues are no big deal to them. The biggest problem with the house has already been disclosed, along with a repair estimate that will be honored for the next owner.

As I have gotten older, I have noticed how much a series of books let you see 'under the hood' of the author's mind. It is actually really disturbing if you know anything about the author's private life and changes in their circumstances or decisions and then watch how the books change. In some ways and in some cases, it is REALLY off putting.

Some are better than others, obviously, but to me it's like watching modern athletes, taking PED, using modern equipment, and playing in sterile conditions, and comparing that to old film of guys playing in muddy conditions, with chewing tobacco on the ball, flimsy leather helmets, etc... I'll take the old stuff every day, even if the flashy modern athlete, with his braided hair and gold teeth could run circles around those guys.

It worked!
Fair Lady Robin has run 2 courses of antibiotics, and is getting stronger everyday. She worked a balance of 1/2/full days last week, and will rest and get stronger this weekend.
I was shocked at how fast the infection brought her down, as she's one of the healthiest people I know. On a follow up appt w/our Doc, he said most people will end up in hospital w/C.Diff. And, the best places to get it are schools and...hospitals.

I've found that special effects were treated with greater care because they were so expensive.
So, there's no upper limit to what you can show, so there's less dramatic impact.

I don't even know where to start. The most important difference is that the govt of South Vietnam was profoundly unpopular-- a French client state we inherited. Catholic & mandarin & tainted by colonialism, in a polity that was overwhelmingly Buddhist & peasant. The ARVN, according to many of our GIs who observed it for a decade, didn't have a lot of will to fight & win.
Ukraine fights. It has the support of the populace, obviously. We're not trying to reanimate a corpse, as were in VN.

I've got a copy of Jane's Armored Vehicles from the 1970s. It's fascinating to see how even small countries were producing their own weapons, building artillery and tanks. Sure, a bunch took surplus or foreign purchases, but even then it was still "a thing" to defend your own country.
Now the US will do it - and pay you for the honor!

The question is why the United States needs to defend a Soviet-drawn administrative boundary.
Nations violate boundaries all the time. Why is this one - which is notoriously fluid - so important?

Without US support there would be no war. There would be negotiations.

You continue to avoid Ukraine's years long artillery/bombing campaign in the Donbas and the 2014 coup of a legitimately elected government that was friendly to Russia. And the coup plotters who refused to have another internationally monitored election as an alternative.
