Production for an Apple+ TV series starring Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram stopped Friday in Baltimore when drug dealers threatened the film crew, saying they would return and shoot people if they weren’t paid $50,000, police said.My nephew is working in the production. I'm honestly surprised that there wasn't a larger police presence, the city gets a lot of money from stuff like this, you'd think they'd want to protect their income stream.
The “Lady in the Lake” crew was filming in the city’s downtown area around 4 p.m. when the drug dealers approached producers and told them to stop filming, or they’d return to shoot people later that evening, said Baltimore Police Department spokesperson James Moses, according to local news outlet the Baltimore Banner.
The producers declined to pay the extortion money, the outlet reported.

Setting up on the parapet is a great idea, at least for some enterprising Horde counter-sniper. Nice of them to profile themselves so fully visible, out in the bright, open daylight, like that.
And all the while, a car-top platform parked back in the shadows, 15' or 20' from the edge, would hardly have been visible, while still providing an elevated, downward looking perch. Sure, some range of width & height of viewable area would be lost, but it'd be a lot more secure of a hide.
For the AR laden street thugs, well, I doubt they'd be expecting the subsonic .22s, fired from way back deep in offices, storefronts, box vans and the like.
They're intimidating to the untrained, unskilled and inexperienced. Now, an effective counterstrike might be effective only once. They're not stupid and would learn quickly. Trick is, to make it a very, very expensive lesson in the learning.

Loved the picture of the German castle. There are still so many of those old castle/fortresses left, perched high to command the terrain. I would have loved to visit some of them. Years ago, I envisioned a year of wandering around Europe, going from castle to castle. Sadly, that didn't happen, but that's okay. I'm 29, I'm still alive and kicking, and I've got YouTube. Maybe not as good as being there in person, but not a total loss.

for whatever reason, it appears that none were kept around in flying condition. Probably because if you're going to restore a fighter, it's more fun to put your time and effort into a Mustang or a P-38. There's a youtube vid about it which says that the Russians loved it because while it wasn't the best at any one particular thing, it was pretty good at everything - ground attack as well as being a fighter - and so it was perfect for their needs.

This is where a lot of us are still clueless or not able to accept what the left is doing. This is beyond politics and the intrigue associated with it that gives a dopamine hit for the wonks on our side. A lot of us are still in a pre-2020 mindset. It is quite possible this is Old Order Thinking. Maybe we'll have elections. Maybe we won't. Maybe MAGA candidates will get in and not end up being grifters, well maybe only half. Maybe they'll get in, be labeled a danger to national security by the Dems and their Law enforcement arm within the FBI/DOJ will frog march them out.
All I know is we're along for the ride. Keep fighting and yes, vote. Remain a happy warrior but you better have a Plan B. They're not panicking and they're not as incompetent as we'd like to believe. Looks like consolidating power to me. They have no laws to answer to.

- Eastern Front air war was generally at lower altitude, where the P-39 was pretty good
-short range which was a problem in the Pacific was not really an issue on the Eastern Front, where the airfields could move with the front line
- by the time they got P-39s in useful numbers, Russians were increasingly experienced whereas when the US first got its P-39s, most pilots were fresh ... this can make a big difference

In a Stalin situation, Trump would have already been eliminated after a show trial or forced into exile. Opponents would simply be shot in the streets or dragged away from houses.
The situation is serious but fantasizing about how Weimar fell is not an appropriate analogy. Weimar was always seen as an imposed foreign government with one third wanting full Commie, one third behind Adolf, and one third still longing for a Kaiser. No one much liked the Weimar government as it was tainted by surrender.

This might be econ 101, and bleeding obvious, but it only just occurred to me: inflation is a psychological phenomenon more than anything else.
In a normal (non-inflationary) economy, there is great pressure *not* to raise prices. Competitive pressures of course, but also the pressure of having to explain to your customers why you are raising prices.
Inflation flips the switch. Suddenly, people *expect* you to raise prices. Your customers may not like it, but they don't hold it against you, and you don't have to justify yourself.
That's why inflation is so dangerous. Hard to flip that psychological switch back again.

There is a widespread belief here that the Masses are basically asses as public opinion research used to label them. I have always seen that the public is actually pretty smart overall--people want overwhelmingly for honest elections regardless of party, people overwhelmingly do not want civil war, a substantial majority believe 2020 election was jiggered, rigged, etc. and so on. The public has made its judgment on Biden and he is left with anemic ratings unlikely to improve but that can possibly worsen. Not much that the Dems can do to remedy that at this late date as Congress lacks the days left to do much legislating and key Dems might have to miss votes to campaign.
The BBB was their killshot and it is already dwindling in public estimation.

1) Have you noticed that you don't hear anything about aircraft? No targets are ever bombed, there are no A-10s taking out columns of tanks. Have you wondered why? Russian AA is that good.
2) Ukraine is using the best equipment that NATO has available. Javelins, advanced artillery (which has to substitute for air superiority), the most advanced western tactics along with being fed the best tactical intelligence. Ukraine's counter offensive was an utter failure. Tide washing against the rocks.
Do not make the mistake of thinking that this war proves that Russia is not to be feared. They are proving that they are indeed capable of standing up to western technology. They have taken Donbas and they aren't giving it back.
And outside of the actual war, Russia is showing that they hold all the cards when it comes to economic conflict.
Thinking this war is showing how weak Russia is, is a very naive viewpoint. They need to be taken seriously.

It sounded like an obama speech. I felt the same anger hearing it.
It was filled with not just lies, but complete inversions of reality, and then calls for rising above the divisiveness that only his side creates. They have a skill for saying things that sound honorable on the face, but which are infuriatingly aggressive and deceitful if you know anything about the subject. To me, it is by design to appear "big" and statesman like to his side, while irritating the opposition into fury.
Not sure if they do that to rub our faces in it, or to psych us out, or to get a reaction that they can then use against us. But ofuckwad used to do it and that speech did the same.

They told the soldiers in my unit that if the Russians rolled in we'd be evacuated to England. I think the real plan was to have us line up like we were waiting for a bus then have the MP's machine gun us. Much faster and the Russians couldn't capture any of us that way.

The guys may have been armed, but, they were all so bunched up, and in among the people they were supposedly protecting, someone with some decent knife skills could have killed or seriously wounded the "guards" before they knew what was happening. The so-called "snipers nest" as overwatch was also pretty useless, because if they'd have tried to fire to protect their people, they'd have been shooting into the crowd their people on the ground were supposedly "protecting." As for the pressure canning, I figure it can't hurt, it is about the same amount of cooking time, it is good practice, it is suggested for safety, and did you know you can use it as an autoclave at need?

With all the trillions the US govt has spent, they can't find enough funding to do updated canning testing. The last time the USDA did this was in the 1950s.
What would be nice is updated procedures, with proper testing, and including 15 psig pressure times. They haven't done anything, and won't.

The basic rule is pH above 4.6, pressure canning is necessary for safety. Fruits are low enough to not worry, but tomatoes can be borderline. The recipes we used for tomatoes in water bath all called for citric acid to make sure the pH was low enough.

A lot of the land grant universities do that research, OSU (Oregon State University) Extension sells pamphlets with procedures and recipes.
Their canning lab is pretty cool, it had all the equipment I loathed when I worked in the canneries in the 80's and some really big canning retorts. But some of the universities do that research.

When we did some crushed tomatoes (for vegetable beef soup), the USDA manual did have a 15 psi processing time. I used that. Very short processing time.
They do have a smidge of 15 psi procedures. The testing just hasn't been done for "home canning".
All commerical canning is done at the equivalent of 15 psi temperatures, 250F, and some done at 260F.

I watched a couple of videos about commercial canning operations. Cans are filled, sealed, then put in pressure vessels. They are heated under pressure, air pressure over the top, in a water bath. Temperature is precisely controlled and heated to 250F.
Cool down is done under pressure as well. When they're ready to cool, the hot water is drained and cold water is pumped in the vessels. All the time under pressure. The ensures no cans can rupture until they're cooled down enough to get the vapor pressure below atm.

In the 30's the treatment was to put people in bed and give supportive care like not letting them get too cold.
Treatment is a lot better now, and to be brutally honest, if they can can safely in canneries, you can do it at home just as well. Just follow the book.

There was a "wait" table where the cans sat and cooled off for a while. I got put there, and after two weeks of staring at #10 cans cooling I told them they had to take me off or I would quit.
A week later they put me back up there saying the last three people they put there had quit.
I read books the rest of the summer there.

Commercial canning is precisely regulating the temperature. They've got the equipment ($$$) to measure and regulate it.
They can some things at 260F, the vapor pressure of water being about 21-22 psig. At that higher temp you safely can some very dense stuff that couldn't be done with 10 psi or 15 psi home equipment.
The key is just temperature. Make sure you heat the contents to the right temperature and hold it there long enough.

However, home canned food is hard to beat. Your food will last for years.
You have to be dillingent with heat and pressure though. And again - cleanliness.This.Is critical. Take the time to make sure jars, lids, etc. are sanitized. The rest...easy peasy....

Several vets, probably 6 or 7. Three retired officers. Just ordinary people, middle class, no one affluent, by any means. Many dealing with moderate infirmities of age.
I was struck by how *normal* the group is. Plenty of troubles to go around, there are no pollyannas in the group. Just plain nice wholesome folk, together chatting, and just enjoying each other's company. And, yes, there were deviled eggs.

Last weekend, we attended the Festival of Nations in St. Louis for my daughter's big 3-0.
The crowds were insane, with a LOT of college kids, BLM t-shirts, and many, many "refugees" and "migrants"
That said, nothing major went down, due mostly to the large LE presence, both city and county.
Good food and good music from around the world also helped.

The infantry forces they are using for block clearing after the arty has worked over the towns and the retreat is nearly cut off are mostly militia from the areas being taken and Chechens. Support, arty and airforce are Russian, and a few units. They are being very force economical, and rotating troops in regularly to rest refit and recruit. And they haven't used any of their drafted troops except for far rear duty all, or a lot of their professional troops who are still in reserve.
Given what happened 8 years ago when Ukraine gave up before surrendering, they don't want to let them off the hook before they are ground to hamburger. Especially the Azovs and other Nazi 'special' units.

They tended to like Western weapons for training because the lifetime of the unit was very much longer than local models. T34 tanks left the factory with a spare transmission or two strapped to it because they wore out. But they rolled out, and usually got shot up fast enough that the low lifetime didn't matter.
US had a different problem. We had to ship our stuff over the ocean and repair them on site. Can't go back to the factory, ever. So easy maintenance, durable and spare parts were mandatory.
