Blade Runner is based on a Philip K Dick story. A surprising number of popular modern scifi movies are. Minority Report. Total Recall are another two that come to mind.
These were all written in the 50s. Warner Brothers optioned a lot of his stories at the time. For 4-figures max. Someone at WB was smart. Worth going back and reading Philip K Dick's short stories. Somewhat dated, but he was well ahead of his time. One of the best scifi writers ever in my opinion. Posted by: quantum mechanic at August 26, 2022 07:18 PM (g1EEm) 91

Only reason I went there is because it's across the street from Grand Central Market, a great place to grab chow. We had bizness nearby requiring two trips to the area. Was disappointed in the lack of dystopian collapse scenes in the area - only one street with urban camper "villages". I think the action in downtown is more towards Skid Row. Tuna can top 40 mph.
Posted by: JackStraw at August 26, 2022 07:21 PM John Smith, the only Protestant in the large Catholic neighborhood, grilled a steak every Friday in Lent. Meanwhile all of his neighbors were eating cold tuna fish for supper. On the last Friday of Lent the neighborhood men got together and decided that something just HAD to be done about John, he was just tempting them to eat meat each Friday of Lent and they couldn't take it anymore. They decided to try and convert him to be Catholic. They went over and talked with him, and he decided to join all of his neighbors and become a Catholic. They took him to church and the priest sprinkled some water over him and told him "You were born a Baptist, you were raised a Baptist and now you are a Catholic". The next year's Lent rolled around, and at supper time when the neighborhood was setting down to their fish dinners came the wafting smell of steak cooking on a grill. The men headed over to John's yard. The group arrived just in time to see John standing over his grill pouring small droplets over his grilling steak and saying, "You were born a cow, you were raised a cow, you are now a fish!" April - well, maybe.
They have to be good quality Kodachromes. "Red border" slides from the 1950s are especially collectable. But generally I see a couple few ways to go. Some people sell a huge lot of Slides from an estate for $100 to $200 maybe. Better than nothing. Some have them scanned digitally and sell the image that way. The real trick is to get them submitted to somebody like Getty images, or maybe Shutterstock - and get a continuing revenue stream. A small, but useful profit, you know. It's worth investigating, I think. Posted by: Common Tater at August 26, 2022 07:40 PM (F90Zm) 161

In my mailbox:
Internet access is necessary for work, school, healthcare, and more. Unfortunately, high speed internet remains unaffordable for too many households. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) runs a program, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), that reduces the cost of getting online for people with limited income. Many internet providers offer fully covered internet plans – meaning you may even get high-speed internet for free. If your household income is 200% or less than the Federal Poverty Guidelines or someone in your household participates in certain government assistance programs, you may be eligible for the benefits the ACP provides. Got it. The FCC and ACP provides it. Not me. Not the taxpayer. No, it's the ACP. Posted by: Archimedes at August 26, 2022 07:44 PM (/NCI4) 171

I don't really mind NFTs. Yeah, sure, critics say that it's not fine art and just a scheme for rich people to hide money. To which I say, the critics are absolutely right! But fine art is also a scheme for rich people to hide money, therefore NFTs deserve the same level of cultural appreciation as fine art.

Getting triggered. I BS a little with my neighbor's Dad. Same age, Viet Vet, likes guns and stuff. He told me about a now non existent radio station, one of those little AM stations in the middle of a soybean field. He said they went on the air with the National Anthem, went off the air with a recording of John Wayne reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and "Dixie". Somebody bitched so they dropped "Dixie" and went with "The Bonnie Blue Flag".

I thought I read it was taken from a story by the guy who wrote about the Interzone and shot his wife, the Naked Lunch guy. I know they said they acquired the rights to the title "for a song." Yeah, I was right. Wikipedia: The title originates from the science fiction novella Blade Runner (a movie) by William S. Burroughs. According to Wikipedia: The term "blade runner" referred to a smuggler of medical supplies, e.g. scalpels. Posted by: Chuy at August 26, 2022 07:57 PM (B3oWe) 204
Grump yep, Bradbury Building.
For any Blade Runner aficionados, or architecture aficionados, worth a visit if you're near downtown LA. Park in Grand Central Market underground parking across the street (cheapest in area). And avail yourself of the grub inside the Market. About a dozen+ different food places, several Mexican of course (seafood place deep inside and Michoacan pork place up front on the street are incredible), and even a great donut place near the front entrance to make sure you've gorged enough. As noted above, in the Bradbury weekdays you can enter and walk around the ground floor, weekends there are tours available to the rest of the building. Apropos of nothing, the front shocks that I bought off Ebay for my Honda C70 scooter came today but weren't the right size. They were a smidge longer and a but wider at the top attachment. But, they were more heavy duty that the originals. Maybe they are for a C90.
Anyway, a little grinding and fabricating got them to fit. So now both the front and back shocks are new and heavy duty, which is good because I weigh as much as two Vietnamese.
