Why carry these pieces of paper around when you can carry a cellphone? Someone might come along and take those pieces of paper from you. When you can install a banking app on your phone and lose your entire life savings if you don't install the latest bug fix?

10 I reserved a pickup truck rental this week, but instead got a 3/4 tom GMC Box Van, which, as it turned out, worked out as my daughter tagged along and purchased a drumset, I know nothing about drums, a Simmons SD350, for USD$180 from Guitar Center.
She loves it already, so...
At least the box fit in the rental van.

Cool. How old is she?

I have a one year-old granddaughter and getting her a drumset someday is a useful threat to hold over her parents.

To explain that one a bit: She's an artist who does work on video games, and a character she designed just got added to a major game.

The stream is her trying to get that character in the game - it eventually takes her something like 557 tries.

16 Oh, before I hang it up, SMH, I'm given to understand you are Black American?
If you ever want to be a true celebrity, go to Serbia. It's like 99.99999% White European, it's creepy. You go out into the mountains, you would be a genuine celebrity. People would be pulling you off the street to feed you endless dinners.
Churches would fall all over you.

You would be the safest person on Planet Earth.

557 tries? I hope she never gets into the stalking trade. Persistent little biatch.

I remember the most persistent bug I ever encountered was the compiler didn't do My Dear Aunt Sally. I was like WTF? Kept at it a couple times. Finally had to break it down into the sequence of:
My
Dear
Aunt
Sally

20 The Simmons SD350 is now discontinued, so it was like 1/2 price. The Kid spent her own money, and we read about it, it's a 'starter kit', most negative reviews are from people trying to use it for an actual drum kit...

26 OT, but while the drum kit was being rung up I regaled the hairy Rock Salesman and Guitar Center Guy about the one time, when I worked home-building and we had to rent a storage unit near the build to keep the windows, and on going out to this rather isolated place heard Rockin' Drummin', and in exploration some kid's family had rented a storage unit for him to practice to his heart's content!
Haha!

The Janet Jackson song that can destroy hard drives is funny tech news.

WTF?! "People of the world today, are we looking for a better way of life?" sang Janet Jackson on her 1989 hit Rhythm Nation, not knowing that the better way of life she was talking about didn't include certain hard drives. It's just been revealed that the song has the power to crash particular models of laptops, and it has now been recognized as a cybersecurity vulnerability.

The irukandji is "news" because tourist operators in queensland have been trying to keep it out of the headlines. The video begins with a woman writhing on a gurney in a hospital setting. Only later is it revealed that she is one of two researchers who were stung in the same incident despite being sealed into their wet suits with duct tape ... the other one had a tiny space near his eye brow.

45 The thing I most notice here is the number of Older People trying to get actual information in The Information Age, which is mostly noise. I refer to Jewel45? Who has referred to her Silver Sneaker classes, and seems genuinely nice. I feel her pain. I first bought a tower, printer, and etc. back in like 1996 and that shit cost me like USD$2,000.
The guy who guided me to it, I had to ask him over the phone, "Uhhh... How do I turn it on and off?"
He now works for Google!
I retain a tower with Windows XP, and a gigantic HP LaserJet 5si. I have it right here. It still works.
But this nice young lady was/is so angry and frustrated with her new computer.
I don't know, Jewells, 45, what do you need?
I recall vividly that level of frustration and fury.

144 Metformin is a medicine used together with diet to lower high blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Metformin works by lowering the amount of glucose absorbed from intestines, decreasing how much glucose is made in the liver and improving insulin sensitivity.

The medication lowers the odds of emergency department visits, hospitalizations, or death due to COVID-19 by over 40 percent—and over 50 percent if prescribed early in onset of symptoms. The study also found no positive effect from treatment with either ivermectin or low-dose fluvoxamine.

241 Pixy, can you PLEASE do something about the front page of the blog constantly reloading itself on iOS until it crashes? It makes it very difficult and frustrating to read the site from my phone.

Individual post pages don’t have this problem. Something on the main page is forcing Safari to reload over and over. In order to read anything I generally have to let the main page crash, then reload it, then long-press the comments link of a post in order to open it in a new page before the main page crashes again.

246 "Officers responded to the scene and did nothing. Let the perpetrators go."

Well, the car owner got to keep his converter, right? So where's the harm?

That reminds me of something I saw on the Chicago subway many years ago. A plain-clothes cop had collared a pickpocket and had him in cuffs, and was waiting for the next stop so he could haul the thief to the station. The thief tried to negotiate with the cop: "Hey, she got her wallet back! You can let me go!"

And the cop replied, as if he were addressing a three-year-old: "That's not the point! You shouldn't have taken it in the first place!"

Nowadays, the cop would say, "Yeah, you're right. You can go," knowing that if he doesn't, his supervisor or the DA will, and he'll get his ass reamed for wasting their time.
