A Music Thread [Joe Mannix]

Hitmakers have always fascinated me. Whether as producers or as musicians in their own rights who go and make music for others, they inevitably leave their own mark on whatever they make. Hitmakers can elevate people to fame and leave their signature on the tracks that did it.

Phil Spector is perhaps the quintessential hitmaker. His personal life notwithstanding, the guy knew how to make hits. His "wall of sound" was perfect for its era. It was distinctive and - importantly - big and clear in a time of low fidelity. From The Ronettes' Be My Baby to The Crystals' Then He Kissed Me and countless others, the "Spector Sound" was real and shows up throughout the era and beyond, including through covers like Rachel Sweet's medley of both of those tracks.

More recently, there are people like Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. In addition to Weezer's (and Cuomo's own) large catalogue, he also routinely writes for and performs with others, often resulting in very distinct tracks with his fingerprints all over them. "Magic" by B.o.B. became a hit because of Cuomo's catchy lyrics and his performance of the hook on the track. "Stupid Girl" by Cold doesn't feature Cuomo himself but he obviously wrote much of it.

Is there a producer, writer or other variety of hitmaker that tickles your fancy?

Exceptional Live Performances
German metal* band Rammstein has long been known for its live shows. Their shows tend to be extremely big, high-energy and full of fire and extremely elaborate pyrotechnics. The leader Till Lindemann is a pyrotechnician and it shows. When performing their international hit Du Hast at a show in Paris in 2012, all of this is on full display. The spectacle, the pyrotechnics and the on-stage energy of Lindemann are almost unreal. This is a highly-produced music video taken from concert footage and the editing definitely plays up the performance - but the scope, scale, energy and the sheer spectacle of the thing cannot be denied. It makes me wonder if Rammstein can even perform at all while Europe is in a gas crisis.

* Some may take exception to this. Rammstein is hard to classify. The German music press created a new genre identifier to describe the band, so I'll just bow to simplicity.

***

Great Covers
In 2015, Natalie Imbruglia did a cover of Daft Punk's 2012 hit "Instant Crush." Her version is quite different from the Daft Punk original, especially as the song progresses. This version is also very clean and clear and easy to listen to and has none of the vocal distortion effects of the original. I have heard that one of the reasons Imbruglia covered this track is that she liked the song but found it hard to understand the words. If that was her motivation, she certainly achieved the goal. I think she did a good job on this cover.

***

Cool Music Videos
The Foo Fighters have had a long line of amusing and fun music videos and the video for 1999's "Learn to Fly" is prime example. The band is on a trip on airplane when a midair prank by the flight attendants goes quite wrong and it is, of course, up to the band to safely land the plane. The band members all play various characters and I think is a pretty fun video.

Arbitrary picks from my collection
In no particular order and no implications of quality, here are four songs I've heard recently.

Chris LeDoux - Western Skies
A love song to the wide open spaces and life in the western prairies and mountains by one of the country/western greats.

Evanescence - Call Me When You're Sober
This is one of a multitude of Evanescence songs about love gone wrong, but it's a lot brighter than many of the others which tend toward being lachrymose or hard-edged and angry. I think it's worth listening to, but then I'd probably listen to Amy Lee singing entries from the phone book.

Cake - Stickshifts and Safetybelts
Bench seats are the essential prerequisite for fun in an automobile.

The Black Keys - Sister
A great groove and a great riff to go with it from a two-man band that always sounds quite a lot bigger than it is.

Bonus Elvis
This week marked the 45th anniversary of Elvis' death and this cannot pass unmarked in a music thread that falls on the same week. Here's his version of "Suspicious Minds."

Also, did you know that Donald Trump awarded Elvis a posthumous Medal of Freedom in 2018? I had no idea. Another thing I learned this week is that the discoverer of a new species of spider (Paradonea presleyi) named it in Elvis' honor.

8 Couple things right off that have always found interesting, is the number of big hits that were never intended to be anything, really. We've heard stories of famous musicians working on their magnum opus for months or even years and much anticipated, it turns out to be not so hot, and a commercial failure.

Years ago studio time was expensive, and bands needed filler material oftentimes to reach the ~ 45 minutes of an LP. So the producer would ask "What else you got!?" and the guys would look at each other. "I dunno ... there's that one jam we play when the bar is getting ready for last call ... guess we could do that one ..." Instant hit!!

Producers and arrangers can do some pretty cool stuff too, they really have an ear for making a group shine. Good ones are in demand. It's neat to listen to demos of new tunes and hear it progress all the way to the final form it was released.

9 Phil Spector did so many magical things. His Wall of Sound played so well on cheap radios.
His Wrecking Crew house band had so many talents that went on to great things. Leon Russell, Glen Campbell, Sonny & Cher.
Carol Kaye on bass -- she had more #1 hits than The Beatles, Elvis and The Stones combined.
Three drummers who played with Steely Dan, the ultimate test -- Hal Blaine, Jim Gordon, Jim Keltner, and Jeff Porcaro's dad.

I had no idea they covered that. I'll check that out. I find Billy Corgan more than a bit grating but the man is very talented. He's also something of a hitmaker in his own right and he was largely responsible for Hole's only remotely accessible album "Celebrity Skin." He did Courtney Love a pretty huge favor by taking care of that record for her.

I put the Barry Manilow "Paradise Cafe" CD in the DVD player. My gosh! What great sound! I could hear tones and subtleties like never before. (Before any smartass remarks, that CD is one of the bluesiest albums ever. I wish Manilow had done more than a couple of blues/jazz/swing albums. They are his forte.)

The connection also works for movie musicals (Lil Abner is terrific), soundtracks (Red Violin), and Bach.

54 Another great producer is Todd Rundgren. He gave Grand Funk Railroad their biggest hit, American Band.

Jim Steinman and Meatloaf created a demo of Bat out of Hell with just Steinman's piano and Meatloaf's singing that got rejected by every music label in the country,

But their hopes went up when industry legend Clive Davis gave them a personal audience..

But Davis only invited them in to tell them -- in person -- how much they sucked.

All was lost until Todd Rundgren came in and bankrolled the whole project himself. Rundgren hired an ace team of musicians, produced it , and played motorcycle guitar. It was and still is one of the biggest selling records of all time.

The bassist was James Jamerson, the #1 greatest of all time. He was the heart of Motown's signature sound.

Legal definition of Fraud includes : failing to correct an impression that is false and that the person does not believe to be true if there is a confidential or fiduciary relationship between the parties;

So, naming a Bill which will INCREASE inflation, an inflation reduction Act, meets the definition of Legal Fraud... as WE have a fiduciary interest in our government... through Taxation and spending.

Fraud, is a Felony, and can get you up to 30 YEARS in jail... if it is large enough... you know... like when you commit fraud about BILLIONs of dollars?

I love The Band version of that, its so roots and old fashioned and heart felt. I have read people who said they never had ever considered how it must have been for the south to face being crushed and having all their hopes they were fighting for ruined. Then having the north crap all over them for 100 years. This song helped them think that through for the first time.

This is an interesting thing when it comes to pre 1970 or so pop music. If it was mixed carefully at all, it was mixed for the low fi equipment of young people. Single speaker car radios, transistor radios, non-stereo record players. If you want to hear the mixes that the Beatles were actually involved in you have to listen to the Mono Masters box set.

161 I grew up listening to Spector's "wall of sound", usually heard through a tinny, tiny transistor radio or an equally tinny dashboard speaker. Much could be done with some of those songs if remastered

I have a theory that music from a time period is shaped by how people listen to it.

In the distant past, people listened to it live, so it had a different, more complex and subtle feel to it. When records came out, the music was pitched and recorded in a way that played well on the old record players. When transister radios came out, the music was toned to play well through that; headphones and high-fidelity sets gave us stuff like Yes. Modern music is all squished down headphones and streaming, so its very simple in structure and repetitive.

Also I think the idea that music sounds like the noises people most often hear in the world around them fits as well. When people were more rural, you got music that sounded more like rural sounds: wind, birds, etc. Urban music gives us rap and metal. Tech age music gives us tech sounds.

It's squished down and streaming, but the equipment is pretty damn good now and the bandwidth is available. Even pretty cheap headphones often sound decent. My own dark suspicion about this is that they're using computers to write the music. Feed an algorithm, say, 20 years' worth of top 10 hits and let it generate music (structurally and in terms of arrangement, anyway). Hand it off to songwriters and producers to take that framework and wrap a song around it.

If they keep repeating the process and feed the new top 10 hits back into it, all output will approach the same result as the algorithm continually redigests its own creations. I have no idea if this is what is going on, but it could explain why popular radio music sounds so mutually similar now in terms of structure and across genres. Or I just need to start yelling at kids to get off my lawn. I dunno.

240 I have seen a lot of metal shows, and a lot of other rock shows. What impresses me about metal bands is how good they sound live, especially in smaller venues like the Denver Fillmore, the Gothic, the Bluebird, etc.

More than once, whatever band was ailing because of altitude and long road trips. But Flotsam and Jetsam impressed me, specifically Erik AK. He could barely speak between songs, but his singing was outstanding. Crazy shit. Fook I love metal.

I'm a Rolling Stones fan because when you get past the big hits to the deep cuts you find that they absolutely love American roots music and turned it into a gumbo of their own.

Exile is their best album for this. It even has 3 1/2 gospel songs.

322 Linda Ronstadt, all her quirks aside, is the Great American Pop vocalist, chanteuse.
On another topic, you have to separate musicality from pure show biz.
Show biz is smoke bombs, flashing lights, fog, too loud music, make up, costumes, stuff being lowered from the cat walk, stuff being lit on fire (like a piano in Jerry Lee's case), any other number of cheap thrills.
Musicality has nothing to do with any of that.

I imagine he learned how to park carefully. I had a car with a bum starter I couldn't afford to fix at the moment and spent a few months roll-starting it. I learned two things during that period:
1. To always - without exception - find a slope to park on
2. I could roll-start that car at surprisingly low speed and I could away with parking on very minor slopes.

The follow on album, Champagne Jam was their best selling with two hits; "Imaginary Lover" and "I'm Not Gonna' Let It Bother Me Tonight."

This, despite the fact all of the members were bonified session players with acknowledged talent. Having seen them in late '79 or so I can say they did know how to play.

CCR songs will always have a special place in my heart.

When I first started dating my first ever girlfriend in college back in 1995, she was a social work major. One of her requirements was to do volunteer work each weekend. She volunteered at a local food bank and cooked and served food. One weekend I went to visit her at Indiana University, she said we would have to get up early on Saturday morning to go to the food bank and asked if I wanted to go with her. As a guy in the first stages of puppy love, of course I said yes.

I don't remember anything about what we did there or the people or anything other than CCR was playing on the radio in the kitchen while we worked. And every day after that, whenever I hear CCR, it takes me back to that day, to that feeling of innocence of young love.

421 "I believe he died before finishing that Opera." Yes, he did. It was completed by Franco Alfano in 1926, two years after Puccini's death. It is said that at the premiere, when the conductor, Arturo Toscanini, reached the point where Puccini's music ended, he put down his baton, then turned to the audience and said, "Here the Maestro laid down his pen."

By the way, the aria "Dessun Norma" from "Turandot" is for a tenor, but Aretha Franklin sang it in place of Luciano Pavarotti at the 1998 Grammy Awards - and knocked it out of the park:

423 Since Linda Ronstadt was mentioned many times, she always had the ability to be on, no matter what was going on. I saw a recorded of "Different Drum" by the Stone Poneys where the band is, well, *not* on. They're terrible. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 20, 2022 09:39 PM

Yes it is! And definitely triggers. I can listen to the 80s channel on Xfinity while I work and certain songs will send me back to different years of my life during grammar school. When I hear some 90s songs, it sends me back to high school (early 90s) or college (mid to late 90s). And then hearing certain groups or songs that were popular in the 2000s, I am sent back to my 20s and early 30s and things that were going on in my life back then.

Certain songs or groups I listened to over and over again during different times in my life and when I hear them now, it sends me right back there for a few moments. Sometimes it's a happy memory and sometimes not.

But yeah, music is awesome and its interaction with the human mind and emotions is powerful.

447 Yes, word is that Jim Gordon stole it from Rita. He must have gotten millions for that single song credit as it got wrapped into credit for the whole song.

I hope he's spending it well.

450 The Mystery Click: Dean Martin

Sinatra, Davis Martin are some of my all time favorite singers as they epitomize that 50s style. I ran into one of the coolest bit of Rat Pack history in the most unexpected place. Well, for me it was unexpected. Parry's Lodge, Knab, Utah found its fame as the go to hotel in the 20s - 50s when Hollywood was filming westerns in the area which was a lot. The fun part is all the rooms are named after famous actors who stayed in specific rooms. The Rat Pack had one side of one wing bearing their names. "Conveniently", all the wives' rooms were on the other side of the wing and it is pretty easy to guess why which I will leave to the fertile imaginations that come and go here.

451 My list of favorite producers/engineers can go on and on but Rudy Van Gelder for Blue Note and George Martin for the Liverpool lads must be noted. But I wish to highlight Rick Rubin and what he got out of Johnny Cash in the American recordings, especially American IV which I have come to view as Mr. Cash singing his last musical will and testament to the world. It is beyond powerful. On one trip with a pack of 7 year old boys (the chaos was exactly what you would expect, and it was great) somebody put the American IV on and within minutes the boys settled down and just listened to the entire recording. I have never seen anything like that before or since. After American IV ended instantly chaos erupted and didn't quite for the rest of the camping trip. But that moment and the power of Mr. Cash's performances guided by Mr. Rubin's skill have stayed with me since then. I find it to be one of the greatest recordings of the 20th Century and visit it now still.

453 RE: Recorders played seriously

On the "Concept" video for Do That to Me One More Time{/i], The Captain (Darryl Dragon) plays a recorder where the concert video has a flute.

454 William Orbit. Didn’t read comment, sorry if a repeat. Think Madonna Ray of Light, her last good album.
