First-World Problems...

Floodbulb 2004.jpg

What the hell is going on with quality control in our major corporations? This bulb lasted barely 18 years. Nowadays of course Sylvania is owned by the Chinese, or the Canadians (they're the same I think). But I can't blame them for this spectacular failure.

And the worst part is that I couldn't think of a power tool that I could use to change the bulb. So not only did I have to change a bulb in a high ceiling, I had to do it manually!

I wouldn't trust a suction cup for this, but there are cage-like holders with springs around the opening that can be attached to extension rods. They work great, and when you're done, you just tug the holder off the bulb.

I use a multiple cup head to remove/install floods - I get the cups moist first. As you mentioned, I use the gage arrangement for traditionally shaped bulbs. In one of the rooms I have a 24 foot ceiling in spots - it feels like I am manipulating a 50 foot pole though.

Posted by: Tonypete at March 27, 2022 02:16 PM (Msys3)

40 Well, if it is any consolation, the LED replacement for that flood will use about 1/8th the energy. The current generation of LED bulbs is pretty dependable, now. All my built-in fixtures here at the Arizona casa are LED, and on some of them you can dial in the color temperature.

Consider yourself fortunate it lasted 18 years. Sylvania probably screwed-up when manufacturing the bulb!

Below are two facts that all businessmen and engineers know. (And take advantage of?)

An item that lasts forever never needs to be replaced.

An item used to its maximum capability will fail.

My Alberta place (which is in Alberta's Tornado alley) has a disused dry well about 20 feet deep, made of 48 inch spiral steel culvert pipe. I should get some 3/4" rebar, and weld a set of ladder rungs down one side. It would need ventilation; maybe a 12 volt computer muffin fan run off a solar panel.

133 Definite first world problem.

The easy-open/re-sealable packaging for many food products, I've found in the last few years, no longer "work". Meaning, the tear-strips don't tear at all, or straight/such that they open the package.

Cellophane covers on tubs of things like hummus - the tab provided to grip-and-rip ..... doesn't work. You have to take a knife and carve the cellophane off the container around the 360.

The little cheese sticks with the easy-open tops? Nope. A few brands now, literally have to use scissors to open them.

Weird. Materials? Process? Designs are clever and remain as before, but many of these things simply don't "work" any more. It's back to knives and scissors to open many things that have been tool-free easy open for years.

A snipe. You need a snipe. Mechanics' term for an extension added to a wrench to give extra leverage. Classic snipe is a piece of pipe partially flattened on one end so the head of the wrench can enter it. Combination wrenches (box end/open end) can be linked by slipping the box of your helper wrench over one jaw of the open end of the wrench being used, effectively doubling your leverage.

And, if you have combination wrenches, use the box end wherever possible on really tight fasteners. Less damage to fasteners, wrenches, and your knuckles.

164 When it comes to lightbulbs I am very picky. I use incandescents and only soft white LED's. For the chandeliers I'll use halogens.

Nothing in my house inside or out will ever use those awful cool light LED's which give off a harsh blue green cold glow.

I also have dimmers on every light switch that has a tiny slider on it.

Good lighting is very important as it creates ambiance, which is gives a home a nice warm glow.

I change the three blades on my old Dixon mower with an air impact, because I have one. I don't have a "mower lift" as such, but I do have a rolling gantry with a chain fall used for lifting engines, etc. So I just hook the chain fall to the front bumper of the Dixon, and lift until it's at a bout a 45 degree angle. No fluids run out, except maybe a little gasoline if the tank is right full. Zip, zip, zip, and I am done. I keep a second set of pre-sharpened blades on hand.

258 A snipe.

Speaking of hiring people, the garbage disposal was (badly) installed by some guy from HD, who put the steel retaining spring on the rubber sleeve in between the tailpiece and the disposal, which naturally eventually cut through the rubber. Tiny base, frosted, incandescent, small round bulb. The electrical supply place couldn't help -- they did have bulbs with that size base, but they were long candleflame shaped. WTF? Lowe's employee was even more helpful -- nothing like it in stock, but he offered to check if it was available and went... online to Googul.

Here at our house, after decades of fussing, I finally ordered a replacement faucet set for a 100-year-old sink. Looks good - almost identical. 8" vertical mount dual faucet, although the soap dish does not have drain holes like the original. I have yet to install it because, I might be able to do it, or I might royally mess things up (as I am wont to do on many projects) and end up with no kitchen sink.

376 It's an old car-guy tradition to be very picky about what oil you use for each model. When you go to any garage facility, you can't be sure of what they're putting in there. I once specified adding a pint of a Slick-50 type additive to a Jeep transmission when it was in for its first warranty service; it turned out later that "the guy" had put in that one pint and skipped the rest of the gearbox lube. That trans (note new nickname?) went fine for thousands of miles on that one pint, and then of course the guy lost his job when the dealership had to install a new cluster.

Now add a tubeless tire plug kit, available cheap from many sources. If the puncture can be found, remove the sharp object that caused it, if present, use the hole reamer to clean out the hole, thread a plug through the eye of the inserter tool, coat the plug with cement, and force it in the hole, which can take a fair bit of muscle. But the whole process can go pretty quickly, and you don't have to jack the car up. Later, take it in to a tire shop, and they can install a patch on the inside for a permanent repair.

391 I had installed a new heat lamp bulb and it blew out the first time I turned it on. Grrr. GE did not bring good things to life!

Worse, it was the heat lamp bulb in the farm's well pit - it's used to keep the plumbing from freezing. Get another bulb, pull the access cover, climb down into the pit again, reset the GFCI (which triggers every time a bulb blows), replace the bulb. Usually at -20 F or worse.

Good news is that I moved from the farm to town. Got too old to maintain the place.

I replaced two bulbs like the one pictured with LED bulbs to save energy. Previous owner of the house rarely used these lights - I use 'em 12 hours a day since the room is my basement office/bedroom.

I may never have to replace those LEDs!

You're way too nice a person. If you were more of an asshole people would stay away from you. It works!

393 Well one thing that's nice about led lights is they last like forever. (like all lights incandescent especially, they last longer if you don't turn them off/on a lot)

But even with that, the cost is such that you won't make up the difference in cost from the incandescent. Then again depending on where they are, they provide two things that leds can't and that's color and heat. That's right. I'd bet a lot of people don't realize how much heat their lights were throwing off thus lowering their heat fuel bill. It's small and with the price fluctuations they may not see it. I went and bought 100s of incandescents during the closing down the factories time (but they didn't) and I haven't had to use a one. (I went led in most places as I had the chance before the scare so I got ripped unless people need incandescent for some reason.)
