"The Last Tram"
Milan, by Giorgio Bonapace

Cat spectators.

Duck throughway.

Toddler seeing a dog for the first time.

Panda cuddle ball.

Panda lunch. Sound on!

I'm not recommending this one, but I'll include it for the brave-hearted: Panda fartclam sunbathing.

It's the only way to travel.

Bat bathing day.

Calling your birds back in.

Inman: Savage domestic violence situation.

Jacked up on knockoff foreign Mountain Dew? Yes, he's dangerous as shit.

41 Lisbon has neat little trams (or at least they did last time I was there). So slow in places you could just walk up and get on, no need for a "stop". They trundled along through the older part of town, which didn't look that much different than the pic above, though smaller buildings generally. Little family restaurants pouring vinho verde from their own farm outside town. Slow and perfect. I heard tell it kinda got busier/less nice due to EU-ization and popularity.

The Bee is the only consistently and genuinely funny thing any more. Of course, in the formerly freest and most vibrant open society in the world, famous for its humor and having no sacred cows beyond satire, they have the entire market to themselves.

Which is stunning, alarming, and consistent with all the over evidence around us.

98 runner, to answer (well, not really) your question from last thread, reliable info re humanitarian corridors in Ukraine is probably a unicorn right now. Neither side can be trusted, or more importantly, neither side can be relied on to get it right, *even when they're not knowingly lying for propaganda purposes*. It would probably work, too. Ya know, fracking is kinda expensive to do, with their breakeven point somewhere around $45 per barrel. A lot of the smaller operators probably went bust or sold out due to low demand during the 1st year of covid.

But why aren't they turning Texas into swiss cheese at today's prices? 'Tis a mystery.

My father, who mined gold claims in Montana in the 1930s, was treed many times by bears in Montana while hiking to/from town. Like pilots always looking for possible landing spots in case of engine failure, he said you were always looking for a tree to climb. It had to be small enough that the bear couldn't climb up after you, but big enough the bear couldn't knock it down.

Alternatively, you could hike with a partner who's a slower runner than you.

Your battery will be used for storing power for industry. You will get nothing for your $65,000 purchase.

I looked up the figure for how much gasoline is produced in the US each day (had to calculate it, something like 8 million barrels per day). If this is correct, and I don't know if 8 million bpd is the correct figure, it represents something like 200% of the amount of electricity that is produced daily in the US.

Now, this was a quick-and-dirty calculation, so I'm not certain I have everything correct, but if it is, our grid simply will be overwhelmed by the introduction of EVs.

We'll need a hell of a lot of either coal-fired plants or nuclear plants, in order to make this work. And then string up the high-voltage cables to the areas that need it.

Not sure of the source, but I saw a claim that he was hit from about a mile away. That's 2 Generals in 2 weeks for the Ukrianians.

The Alkali metals have one extra electron on an outer shell and so have a great desire to ditch this to something electronegative. Lithium burns on contact with water, sodium burns quickly and i think potassium burns so hot the hydrogen freed from the water catches fire as well.

It's common knowledge to you because as you said you played in the area. But the vast majority of the public has no idea.

3 years ago one of the big Boston hospitals, Beth Israel I think, was planing a new lithium battery storage area as past of a major hospital expansion. They were down to the final approval stage when the BFD had to get involved to approve all the fire code issues and discovered they were planning to put the batteries in the basement of the hospital and the whole project was put on hold.

They had to redesign the whole thing and build a completely separate building to house the batteries. And this is just one project that was caught in time. There are a lot of buildings out there that got approved that are major disaster just waiting to happen.

Probably true - in the 80s conscripts went thru a 2 year program and in year 1 were learning which end of a gun was which. Russian units in WWII had procedures to split the unit into an action portion and a training portion, one of the ways they managed to build units of a sort faster than the Germans could kill them in the early going.

I also heard from a decent source that much of the heavier fighting was being done by the militias of the break-away republics to fix the Uke army while more free wheeling ops were done by the regulars, and most losses are from the former.

The reason is with all the sanctions and the financial cancelling of Russia, they've made it impossible for Russia to make the dollar payments. So Putin says we'll pay in rubles.

This violates the terms of those bonds, of course. And it will trigger CDS, and those on the other side of that transactions will be on the hook. I don't think it will be that big of an event for the financial system here, but it will be significant.

Think about this, thought. Suppose A owes B money via contractual obligation, but B does something to make it impossible for A to pay that. Did A really default?

Because schools don't teach war - it triggers students, I suppose. And modern history - from WWI onward gets about one paragraph per decade, and those only emphasize the achievements of specific people groups or how the US was complicit, responsible for the conflict. Nothing about the horrors of war.

If Putin plays his cards right he could presumably "un default" as part of the conditions of peace.

It's a different problem than keeping your gasoline contained. Yes, a crash can create a fire. Just like a gasoline powered car can catch fire. The new and exciting feature of Lithium cars is having the battery go 'splodey while you're minding your own business just driving along.

We bought a new, high efficiency gas furnace last summer. The old one that came with the house also had a crack in the heat exchanger (found when it was being removed).
My heating bills would be terrifyingly high if we still had the old furnace. This must be hitting some people REALLY hard.

Russia's terms could be fairly minor, depending on how you interpret them.

Zelensky faces the same sort of pressure Putin does - how much pain are the war goals worth on both sides.

There are two wild cards though

1) Zelensky seems to think he can shame the western countries into direct intervention

2) The sanctions are having an effect...but how much of one on Russia?

I think #2 is a false hope. But...I fear Biden could decide to go all in as his mismanagement of the country becomes clearer and clearer and try to thread a needle of some minimal intervention in the war like a "no fly zone".

The national guard troops are in separate units, drafted in the US and conscripts in the Russian are part of the same unit. I'd expect that there is a partitioning of men from the active units from the conscript heavy portions that don't know the full procedures.

We are led by unserious people as the cliche goes who do not understand rudimentary physics and thermodynamics.

If you're gonna replace IC vehicles with electric vehicles, then you're going to need your grid to supply that energy. It's a lot. A sanctified shit-ton. Now, then you start looking at efficiencies.

You will see electric vehicles listed with greater than 100 mpg equivalent efficiencies. That's true for the energy in the battery.

You start looking a grid efficiency and you get a different picture. A fast charge is only about 50% efficient. A slow charge will be somewhat better. When you add all that in, you'll find the efficiency from prime mover to the vehicle's output is about the same as the original IC efficiency.

And that's considering the most efficiency prime movers, natural gas turbines. Nuclear or coal and that overall efficiency is less than than even gasoline engine efficiency.

It further specifies that in countries where militia or volunteer corps (so-called "irregular" armed forces) constitute the army, or form part of it, they are included under the denomination "army".[6] This definition is also used in Article 4 of the Third Geneva Convention, with the addition of organized resistance movements.[7] The Hague Regulations and the Third Geneva Convention thus consider all members of armed forces to be combatants and require militia and volunteer corps, including organized resistance movements, to comply with four conditions in order for them to be considered combatants entitled to prisoner-of-war status.

Read it again - irregular or not, if they don't comply with the 4 rules - be under orders, no war crimes, uniform, openly armed, they are not covered under the convention.

Yep. I am rural, but I have neighbors all around me. And we get turkey, deer, sometimes moose and black bear, bald eagles, assorted small cat and canine tracks, probably cougar, too, but they are pretty scarce except around livestock. But travel a few miles up the road, and we can be in the wolves' home turf, literally.

496 I understand the fertilizer angle and that it is the important question here but there has to be a ceiling for when crops are planted. I read something a while back that this is around $7 to $8 a gallon - is this correct just looking at the question of a crop not being planted or harvested due to it being too expensive?

We see our role as essentially defensive in nature. While our armies are advancing so fast and everyone's knocking themselves out to be heroes, we are holding ourselves in reserve in case the Krauts mount a counteroffensive which threatens Paris... or maybe even New York. Then we can move in and stop them.

Posted by: Oddball at March 07, 2022 10:00 PM (4I/2K)

505 Whether or not a farmer will plant "a crop" of whatever depends on a lot of variables. The cost of the seeds, fertilizers, other chemicals used, weather, market value, pests, etc. If the government were to subsidize the planting of certain crops that would change the calculus one way or another.

I live amongst farms... corn, soybeans, cattle. A common theme is that if people haven't done any sort of prepping for next winter they are in for some really grim times. This summer will be a make or break season for a lot of people and it's apparent this is by design.

511 "I read something a while back that this is around $7 to $8 a gallon - is this correct just looking at the question of a crop not being planted or harvested due to it being too expensive?"

takes maybe 5 gallons of fuel per acre to produce a crop ... the fertilizer is already here, I would guess. Prices for fall are already up enough to cover all inputs, as far as I can tell. Maybe next year (2023) there would be shortages, but I only see full planting this year. Or maybe I am missing something, but I already have my seed, would not even have to buy fertilizer to make good profit, but I might.
