Gun Thread: Sooper Bowl Edition!

super bowl 2022 scaled 2.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Welp, tonight is the big game. Sometime during this thread approximately 37 hours of pre-game bullshit will end, and the actual game bullshit will begin. Are you watching? I must confess to having lost interest in the game in general and the players and league in particular about 30 years ago. I'm even past watching the game for the commercials, which frankly is akin to reading Playboy for the articles. To say I am profoundy uninterested in the personal opinions of the players and the corporate positions of the NFL is something of an understatement.

With that, let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

More Super Bowl Stuff
It occurs to me I may not have sufficiently made my point regarding the depths of hell to which I believe the game has devolved. Remember when the Super Bowl was Super? Remember when those who played the game were too? Names such as John Unitas and Dick Butkus serve as a stark reminder of what the game of football used to be, and it's players once were all about.

Depressing huh? Having said all that, it's A-OK if you would like to discuss the game tonight in the comments!

******

Springfield Armory Champion Operator
Here's a spiffy little 1911 which sneaked out of the safe for a photo op. Online reviews of the model can be found here and here. I like the pistol a lot, despite its goofy take down process, which is easily solved by rarely taking it apart for cleaning. It's a solid and reliable handgun and the fit and finish are excellent. I have replaced the factory grips with Hogue Combat Grips, or maybe it came with them, I can't honestly remember! Anyhoo, I like the grips a lot and have them on a bunch of guns.

SCO 1 021322 scaled.jpg

SCO 2 021322 scaled.jpg

One of the reviews mentioned something I think is a good idea, and that is the practice of placing a strip of skateboard friction tape to the front strap. I have done this on several guns and even some match rifles, and with it in place, your hands and fingers will not slip. At all. Ever. It's not necessary with the rubbery Hogues, but keep it in mind if you have a grip that feels slippery. It's a weird trick!

Texas 3 Pack
Tonight we have not one, not two, but three range reports from the great state of Texas!

First up, our pal and TXMoMe co-host extraordinaire Rancher Bob. For those of you thinking RancherBob's skills might be limited to maintaining an exemplary attitude as horde of unruly Morons descend upon his beautiful ranch like a plague of locusts, think again. He is quite the shooter, too!

RB 1 021322 scaled.jpg
$2.97?!

Range report from the home of the Texas MOME!

Marlin 30-30, 336 C with micro groove rifling shooting hand loads at 100yrds using the IMR 4320 and Winchester 120 primers. The powder and primers are both from the 1960s. I've had one misfire out of 35 rounds. The primers were not in a sealed container. The one pound metal can of powder was still sealed. The bullets 170 grain Hornady flat nose. The aroma was perfect when I popped the metal seal out. I've reloaded all of my 30-30 with it about 230 cartridges and still enough to do another 10 or so shells. I used primers from the same era. I've shot about 20 with good results.

My first five rounds at 100 yards were 12 inches low and not much of a group, you can see the holes below the paper They are the ones without paint.

rb 2 021322 scaled.jpg

RancherBob adjusted the sights and got on the paper.

rb 3 021322 scaled.jpg

I think I will stick with closer shots. This is a 3 shot group at 50 yards. The lack of grouping at 100yds is the result of my eyes not being what they used to be!

rb 4 021322 scaled.jpg

Excellent report, RancherBob! Thank you! Very nice to know the powder and primers were still good after all these years!

Next up, our pal Eromero takes the delightful shootrix Mrs E to the range.

So Mrs. E was able to shoot on Wednesday at the brand new indoor range in our town. Family membership is $800 per year, it has six lanes and will allow rifles but no 50cal, and shotguns are slugs only. Any handgun except 50AE.

She loved the place and shot her carry Kimber Micro9 and her target special Glock 17, both at 7 yards which is average gunfight distance.

mrs e 2 021322 scaled.jpg
Kimber target

Mrs E 1 021322 scaled.jpg
Glock target

She had not been a-shootin' in over 8 months. Her Kimber is a ShotShow Special only change is HiViz sights and a CT laser which she never turns on. Her Glock is a retired race gun which is highly customized. She had it on the table year before last TxMoMe and some morons got to shoot it. The 1K rds 9MM she ordered from SG arrived yesterday. Should keep her out of saloons for a while.

Thanks Eromero and very nice shooting Mrs. E!!

***

Rounding out the 3 pack is our pal Jim SND:

jsnd 1 021322 scaled.jpg

And so, I stuffed my range bag with my trusty S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman (4" bbl., .357 Mag/.38 Special) revolver, along with my tried and true Browning Buckmark UDX Pro .22 LR, and a brand new Browning Buckmark UDX Camper .22 LR, which was a Christmas Gift from my employer. Had eye and ear protection, and cleaning products in the bag, as always.

My older Buckmark features a forged steel barrel, and the finger grooves are integral to the frame. The new Buckmark Camper has the feature distinctive to the "Camper" series, that being a small diameter steel "tube" barrel, with a (appx.) 1" diameter aluminum "outer barrel" swaged onto the inner steel barrel. This gives it a Bull Barrel appearance, while actually being a bit lighter than the older Buckmark's forged steel, slab sided barrel. The Camper also has a straight frontstrap on the frame, with the finger grooves being added by the contoured polymer grip. This also results in a slightly larger overall front-to-back grip dimension.

jsnd 2 021322 scaled.jpg

On to the target. I started with the S&W, firing 25 rounds of WW SuperX .38 Special, 148 gr. wadcutters. Double action shooting, as a warmup. That's obviously, the upper-right group on the target. Next was the vintage Buckmark, with 10 rounds (one full magazine) each, of Winchester Super X .22LR High Velocity (40gr), and Federal Gold Match .22LR (40gr). The Super X projectile was plain, lubed lead, while the Federal rounds featured copper-washed projectiles.

jsnd 3 021322 scaled.jpg

Upper left-side target was the two magazines of both varieties, fired in succession. Rate of fire, slightly faster than one round per second. Then, my phone rang, and I learned that my passengers flight had landed a bit early, so I knew I had about 30 minutes till they were out of baggage claim. With that in mind, I took up the new "Camper", and fired 20 rounds of each ammo, but this time with the RSO's permission, stepping up the rate to faster... between 2 and 3 rounds per second.

jsnd 4 021322 scaled.jpg

Results, on the lower left, the Federal Gold Match. Lower right, the Winchester Super X.

After the 3rd round of the Federal, I experienced a Failure to Extract, but a single drop of oil on the hinge-pin of the claw extractor solved that problem. I had lubed the slide rails prior to shooting, but had neglected to oil the slide internals. Oops!

Beginning to end, I was at the range for a total of 25 minutes. Still, some practice is always better than no practice! And, I made it on-time to pick up my passengers at arrivals, too!

Great report! Nice shooting and congratulations on the new pistol, Jim SND!!

I'm watching a golf tournament I recorded this morning. It's overseas (Euro Tour). UAE, I think. They were in Dubai a couple of weeks ago. That is one hell of a skyline. The downside is its proximity to Iran. Talk about an inviting target. I check the score of the SB from time to time. That's about as far as my interest goes.

21 So, today, my wife and I hit the swap meet, as it's now our preferred method of buying books and adding movies to our digital library.

I'm wandering around, stop at one place, and, holy smokes, there's a 1916 Smith & Wesson chambered in 45 Colt. I sighed, moved on..and, at another booth, a couple of Rock Island Armory pistols, one a GI pattern, 9mm and the other is a "tactical" model in 45acp. They were on the table next to a couple of Taurus revolvers.

This is a freaking swap meet, not a gun show. And, another guy sold his two cap and ball replica pistols that I'd noticed on a previous visit.

I knew AZ was a bit more relaxed about firearms, but, this? Very cool.

22 Last weekend members of the DMV Moron Gun Club descended on The Nation's Gun Show. The show was a full show, the whole building, both sides, were packed. But one thing I noticed, and maybe I wasn't keyed into it before - they advertise "OVER 1300 TABLES!"

But it seemed like there were less actual gun sellers this time. There were probably 5 large sellers that had 20+ tables. Then there were some specialty sellers with a handful - or one or two. But most of it was accessories and survival/tactical stuff and Trump T-shirts and sham-wows. Maybe it has always been thus, and this is the first time I was paying attention to it.

24 So, as I mentioned during the week, I have a new edition of sorts. It is another CZ P-07, this one came with a Hogue grip band, a compensator, a green holosun 507c milled in and replacement suppressor-height sights.

I call him: El Macho (h/t my man Insom)

I brought him to the range yesterday and let the Nurse and Lazy Messenger try him out as well. Range report follows but just to spoil it: if I can find a good holster for this overmodded monster, I have have found a good IDPA/Carry gun.

25 Long time lurker.....entered the postal match oh so long ago.
Used my HD Military for that....but came into a High Standard Duramatic 101 for a song, almost literally. In any event, the one-piece grip was broken. I repaired it with epoxy so it should be shootable. Replacements seem to be few and far between, even from the normal places like Numrich.
I know it's also the JC Higgins M80, so have searched that as well.

Love the gub thread, Weasel! I read it and the comments every Sunday.

29 No range report from me here. Had a chance yesterday when the temp was close to 60 but I said "Nah, it'll been fine" and now it is snowing today.

I think the only firearm related thing I will do is organize all my gear and ammo. And maybe clean the pistol and rifle.

Posted by: Scuba_Dude at February 13, 2022 07:14 PM (mcfjc)

30 Funny little Springfield, I'm not familiar with that one at all. I do like the Hogue soft grips, my Colt King Cobra came with one. I thought for sure I was going to be swapping it out until I shot with it - the finger grooves fit my hand perfectly so it's a keeper.

I bought a sheet of Talon Grip to use on various spots - it's not quite as rough on my hands as the skateboard stuff - seems to be a bit stickier and about the same cost.

Do they still do the puppy bowl? I cut the cord years ago, that was always my go-to during the bowl. I'll be interested to hear if the dialed back the woke on the commercials this year - somehow I'm guessing no.

31 Really inexpensive AR's at Bear Creek Armoury for the remainder of March. 5 different models, all M4, 16" barrels. Three are side charging and two are conventional charging. $350. Never owned one but have not heard anything bad about them. A local NC manufacturer. Thinking about a side charging one myself.

35 No range time. Michigan is colder than a well-diggers ass, and so I'm using the time to build up some ammo reserves. When the weather breaks, I'll have plenty.

SG Ammo is starting to offer discounts on the Covid-priced ammo that is no longer viable. As I predicted in this space a few weeks ago, the people who starting hoarding the stuff during the height of the shortage in the hopes of selling it later are realizing prices aren't going to reach those peaks any time soon.

In fact, I'd argue that 9mm ammo prices are going to crash hard before rebounding because so many of the big players closed every other line to focus on making $.90 per round 9mm.

Now there's a major glut, and I'm starting to see other calibers re-emerge as the lines are retooled.

36 Evening everyone. No range time this week as watching the littles called. I did gain a bit of edumacation though:

Normally, I leave my pew sticks accessible as we have no children living at home anymore. When the grands (4-13) are here, into the safe they all go.

But, things have changed and we now have two little ones, both under 15 months here most days. One has just started walking. My range bag lives next to my bed and as I said, my pistol lives elsewhere when they are here BUT - the walker got into my zipped up bag and completely unloaded all contents onto the floor. He went through every pocket, zipped container, and little hidey holes. Tools, eyes and ears, a few spent shells, choke tool, notebook and pens - everything - thrown everywhere. Nothing overtly dangerous in there but still, the lesson is that the little stinker is faster, smarter and more dexterous than I thought he was.

I knew the bag was within his reach and I thought, eh, it's fine.

It. Was. Not.

In one kit the upper was so scruffed up that I decided to paint it with some Brownell's Gun-Kote. Black. I guess the one good thing is now I don't have to find an XM grey lower. Range report

Met Mark Andrew Edwards and Lazy Messanger for some down time.
These guys are so generous and helpful. I get to shoot fun, new stuff in different calibers.
With their help, I have the confidence to be able to safely handle and shoot just about anything.

Wasn't my most accurate day on the range, but it was fun and helpful. At the end of the session, I started talking with a teeny little woman shooting next to me. She was practicing drawing from her IWB holster. We talked for a bit. She lives south of Seattle with her young daughter. We talked about pepper spray, which she carries, and concealed carry and general safety for her girlie. Was lovely.

Thank you for the forum, weasel.

Can't shoot the revolvers w/o a decent supply of ammo to feed them. It's there if you absolutely need it, but be prepared to pay a lot more for it.

60 Range report:
The Nurse wanted to try a Beretta 92 and as it happens, I have a Taurus PT-92. It was my first pistol, purchased by me in 1991, the same week I turned 21. It has fixed sights, pachmar grips and the vastly superior frame-mounted safety. It is a very soft shooting pistol to me, but I'll let the Nurse give her impressions. I fired a 10-year old loaded mag out of it and there were no malfunctions of any kind.

Next up was El Macho. The compensator gives if very very little muzzle rise. The green dot is bang on with 115 gr 9mm CCI brass, shoots a little low with 124 grain Norma loads (my old P-07 is dead on with the 124 grain loads and shoots low with the 115 gr stuff)

The gun is very easy to shoot and control. Me likey.

Also shot my G44 with some mixed, leftover trash ammo. It all fed and fired but point of impact was WAY up and left with some ammo and a little high with others. Bleh. I'm swapping it out for another .22 pistol until I shoot up all this cheap shit.

A good day at the range though. Very good day.

61 Howdy Weasel and Horde.
A double plus good day for me Friday. I made the drive to Yakima stopping at Cabela's. Ammo is much more plentiful and prices have dropped a bit. No where near enough to be affordable on a fixed, small, income.
WA state is also plotting another stab at outlawing, "High capacity magazines". 10 round maximum until they think they can grab everything.
But, in better news, my friendly local smoke shop on the Yakama rez is back open, although limited hours, none on weekends.
The humidor smelled so good I nearly fainted. Picked up some tines of panatella sized smokes to share with friends. Punch and Cohiba red dots.
Drove back through the canyon stopping to sit on an old pine stump and have a rick House Fumas in toro size.

This is an EXTREMELY low price. Though between you posting and me going to look, looks like only side chargers are left.

So, part of the low price is that they are flat tops - so you need some optics (ask me about a $20 red dot. No, really.) You will also need mags and a sling because those are not included either.

I am not familiar with the side chargers - seems like they are right hand only. This means the forward assist is gone. And - this is just me - part of the attraction of an AR is the universality of milspec - a side charger means that there are some pieces here that are going to be unique to just this gun.

But still - TREE FITTY!

Some guys selling knives, and someone else selling accessories, and that guy selling survival food. And then the guy with 200 boxes of pistols neatly stacked - all on two tables.

73 Do you know what happens when you don't have headspacing right? From failure to fire to catastrophic ka-booms. So, despite what a LOT of keyboard rangers say*, I always check the headspace when I diddle with builds and stuff. What I DID NOT know, tho its obvious when you think about it, is firing pin protrusion. FWIW, I have not built a bolt carrier group from parts before, just purchased it complete. Where the manufacturer should make everything in spec. Since I am putting this all together piece by piece, you need a special tool to check firing pin protrusion (ordered Friday)

If too long? punched primer, which could cause a Ka-BOOM. Too short? fail to fire. Ya learn sumpin new everyday. Thus endeth the lesson

74 Managed to get out to the local indoor range and shoot my "new for me" Sig Vertus chambered in 300 BLK. The only issue I encountered was the inability of the rifle to lock open when using subsonic ammunition without a suppressor. Which really isn't a problem given there's no reason to shoot that stuff unsuppressed. The rifle ran without a hitch with a suppressor attached, as long as the gas piston valve was set on "High" when using subsonic ammo.

I bought one - a side charger - a couple of years ago back when prices were crazy low, partly because it was cheap and partly to support a NC manufacturer. I think I gave $318 for it. I would buy another, although I would put some loctite on the charging handle if it was your daily driver because I feel like it could eventually work it's way loose and you'd end up walking around the range looking for that piece.

90 I am pleased to say that I care so little about the Super Bowl, and pro sports in general, that I don't know which teams are playing.

My fully appropriate attitude leaves more time for important matters. In this case, fitting a replacement cylinder on a Pietta 1858 NMA in 36 caliber. It came with a conversion cylinder to take 38 specials but I would just as soon save my ammo for modern revolvers. However, the price was too good to pass up even having to buy a replacement cylinder. You don't see a lot of 36 caliber Remington cap and ball guns.

I'm looking forward to trying it out. I've found that Colt style 36 caliber revolvers are damn accurate. And fun to shoot. I hope the Remington style will do as well.

102 5 No range time.

Went to the local range with my wife and sister yesterday. We have been back and forth about membership but pulled the trigger yesterday as it were. Nice range, and members only pistol lanes with programmable systems to offer different training scenarios. Should be interesting.

Wife and I shot Taurus G2Cs. Hers has a laser, mine does not. I have better 9s, but it's an inexpensive carry option. She wasn't having a good day, but any therapeutic paper shredding is good.
Sis shot her Colt Mustang in 380 as well a Canik 9. I brought the High Standards, but the HD Military was the only one that wanted to shoot. My sister laughed....she hadn't shot it before and didn't know the 22 wouldn't kick. Quite a giggle.
We also tried the Mako from Kimber. My wife's comment was "I didn't know how long the Taurus trigger was until I shot the Kimber". A much lighter trigger and easy to shoot.

124 Really inexpensive AR's at Bear Creek Armoury for the remainder of March. 5 different models, all M4, 16" barrels. Three are side charging and two are conventional charging. $350. The M9/92F has that damn slide mounted safety. The old Taurus machines use the older design with the frame mounted safety. Sadly, it lacks a decocker, otherwise I prefer this version over the 'real' thing.

The Beretta 92 design is really nice, elegant, reliable and accurate....but the grip is CHONKY. And that's before the previous owner (he has mits like a gorilla) put the Pachmayr grips on.

174 Having carried the M9 through two deployments, I think it's a decent service handgun. It's not a great one, though. The ergonomics for the decocker/safety are not anywhere near as good as the M1911, and the grip is way too thick for a lot of people to get a good grip on. That said, the M9 is not the piece of trash its biggest critics claimed it was. Biggest improvement over the M1911 is the sights. The tiny sights on rebuilt WWII M1911s are barely useable. I think the sights are the main reason why I shot better w/ the M9 than the M1911.

Yeah, I've got an old cheap-ass Traditions muzzleloader .50 caliber black rifle kit gun that I think I gave $80 for (with all the fixin's) back in 1998 or so that fills that also fills that role.

That has been a deer killing machine, btw. Price per pound that's probably the best money I've ever spent on a hunting rifle. Powder is cheap as dirt, and even pellets are reasonable, and you can cast your own bullets if it comes to it. Wrap one in part of an old COVID mask to tighten it up in the barrel and you're ready to go.

Probably the PPQ. The P226 is more accurate, but heavier. The PPQ can be both a carry and a service-level weapon.

188 If anyone was wondering about Swampfox optics, I have been using the Sentinel manual brightness (shake to wake) green dot for a while and so far it seems pretty good. Sleeps after four minutes, just lift it and it wakes, so you don't ever actually notice it's asleep. CR2032 battery is good for a year of constant use. It's a $200 micro-optic (around the Sig R0 size) that's
- From a US company (Colorado)
- Coated glass lens
- Pretty much no-questions warranty service
- Veteran/LEO discount
- Offers a green dot

Green is a hell of a lot more eye-grabbing and won't blend in to taillights quite so easily at night. Stands out more. The only caveat is that people are saying that the adaptive-brightness version gets too dark in low light, but I haven't noticed any issues with fiddling with the brightness manually. If it's too dim, you still see it, just not as quick: you're trying to acquire the dot as soon as you bring it up to eye level. If it's too bright, now you have a 5MOA dot instead of a 2.5MOA dot from the splash. Not a big deal.

194 Of course, the interesting aspect of the "one handgun" question is that the common assumption is that it will be for self-defense against people and also potentially face lots of them.

But how likely is that really? One could argue that a .357 Magnum revolver with a 6" barrel would have both hunting and self-defense applications, with the additional advantage of longer range than a standard service pistol.

Aguila Colibri and Super Colibri. .22lr ptimer powered only. 20 grain pill. Can fire in your living room with just a phone book backstop. Out of a Ruger 10/22 Carbine, all you hear is the click of the hammer hitting the pin. You have to manually cycle it.

The super colibi is my pest eradicator. In a bolt gun, much quieter than an air rifle and remarkably deadly. Seens to have a fair amount of velocity variation though. Best tool I have found for the job.

The Sig P226 was the runner up to the Beretta in the US handgun trials. I've read that although the P226 was the better performer, Beretta won the competition on the price of the total package (pistol plus spares and support) by the slimmest of margins. Supposedly, that margin was enough to buy the Beretta board of directors lunch but not much else.

And that's its only drawback for me - it's not really a concealed carry handgun. It's large and has too many edges all over it. I would love one for carrying openly in a thigh rig - when that's appropriate - but it's down the list after a couple pf other guns I can't afford.

(And yes, I also carried one for almost 2 1/2 years, along with my M4.)

I don't know why they keep stuffing 1 1/8 oz of lead in 12 gauge bird shot shells. With 1 oz you get 90 percent of the pellets on target, faster, with 6 pounds less recoil.

I recommend people use 1 oz whenever possible. Maybe increased demand will encourage greater supply.

215 I spent 2-3 hours and dozens of bore patches cleaning a 1915 New England Westinghouse contract Mosin Nagant bore today only to still have it spitting out black patches every time I bronze brushed it. Best I can figure is that it was never really cleaned beyond boiling water after corrosive ammunition. Fortunately no rust on the patches, just black to gray, so a century's worth of carbon built up across G-d know how many battlefields before it made its way back stateside.

Posted by: Anti doesn't matter at February 13, 2022 08:09 PM (rfjjV)
Based only on what I've heard (secondhand at best) or read, I'd guess the bolt, barrel, and gas tube. Accounts of the battle of COP Wanat, where troops fired multiple M4s to destruction, 12-15 magazines fired continuously on full auto will destroy the weapon by blowing the gas tube, warping the barrel, or causing the bolt to seize in the chamber due to heat.

Tuckable holster, Sig P365XL. I'm not fit but I'm not fat, and I wear suits and or Sunday evening type slacks daily. Nothing tight. Everything seems to fall into place most times, although if I'm in a sports car I'll carry differently because getting in and out is already borderline flopping out onto the ground and then standing up.

I wanted a Baretta 92, and went to the store to get one. this was mid 80's right around the time the CZ75 was rumored to be finally entering the country. I was usually at this shop every other day, saw the baretta, told the dude, I'll be back tomorrow. I go back to get the baretta and *poof* if by magic there was the CZ-75 in the show case. He says yeah just came in today, our first one. I'm thinking shit, can I swing both? Then he says well how about the taurus version, I have one of those, and it's almost half the price. I said hmm, $315 for the taurus, and $450 for the CZ...SOLD. I ended up with a taurus instead of the baretta, but.... I also got the CZ. Was a good day.

McGyver, over Posted by: McGyver
--------------
Pierced primers rarely cause kabooms but do release uncomfortably hot gases into the interior of your receiver. One of the reasons you should always wear eye protection. Leave it unfixed long enough, it will erode the bolt face in a particular ringlike pattern.

That being said, firing pin protrusion is usually more of a problem on bolt action rifles especially old military rifles because of tolerance stacking and people swapping components. You could get an out of spec AR firing pin but that would be rare.

I used a Brownell's firing pin gauge for checking rebuilds when I do it on occasion. Works with a caliper set and is a universal one.

You can make your own if you have patience and precision measuring tools and know the specs for your firearm. Most field ones used by the military are simply slots in a piece of metal--one is max, one is minimum.

341 285 200 What is the part of an M4 that fails or has to be replaced the most in a combat theater?
Posted by: Anti doesn't matter
---------------
Ar15 dot com has a long running thread with reports from the owners of Battlefield Las Vegas, a firing range where you can fire all sorts of rare goodies in full auto. Those have full mag dumps, etc. and they more or less have rated components that they used. Think the thread is under Henderson Defense and they also have an AK thread as well.

The biggest issue is running full auto with a suppressor along with running shorter gas systems. Bolt lugs, extractors with parts, cam pins, gas keys with screws, and occasionally buffers themselves are parts that are wise to have as spares. Ditto on mags--those are consumables. Occasionally a bolt release latch will give way.

Fire semi auto at a reasonable pace, have a mid length or longer gas system, use high quality bolts, and even a decent chrome moly barrel should last for thousands of rounds. Pat Sweeney, in his AR book series, Vol. 4, has torture testing of various ARs that you might find interesting or appalling depending on your outlook on intentionally abusing firearms.

Posted by: Anti doesn't matter

Build kits are around for those--Centerfire Systems in KY has some already assembled barrels and receivers for about 250-300. The difficult part of AK assembly is the front barrel trunnion and the barrel has to be pressed in (for most models) and then pinned after you headspace it to the bolt you are using. Most of the rest of the assembly used riveting or some folks simply use bolts (those are made fun of due to ahistorical assembly but as functional rivets). Key is making sure the barrel is over 16 inches and that you use enough American parts to avoid 922r (BATF) problems with your build.
Or you can buy one from Palmetto State Armory with an American flavor.

If I were to pick nits, I prefer the S&W cylinder release and their trigger. But I know several people who swear by them. I think it's Scogg Dog's EDC too.

365 RE Skip.... a good place to start on making your own black powder is the old Foxfire series, Volume 5. There are modern sources, of course, but it is a good way to get the feel for it. Buy used coffee grinders at thrift store for grinding the ingredients....You do NOT want to use a single grinder and get a possible KABOOM. Also a lapidary tumble that is rubber lined , and some lead balls for the mixture. It is lots of fun, and you will wind up with a good product, if you pay attention to details. Jasonj

377 I don't know. I have to think that it's kind of reassuring to have those parts sitting in that box in the garage. I've got a few of the simple Lee loaders for that very reason. I'll pick up the primers when I can. If it comes to it, I'm not going use them for feeding a machine gun, but for feeding my family.

Posted by: Moron Robbie

Robbie,
I am one of those that got into reloading seriously during the panics 2007 Obama. Loaded handgun rounds before because even before then .38 special and .357 was more expensive that reloads. Cheap ammo suddenly became unobtainable.

Simply buy the cheap 9mm or 5.56 when it appears (assuming you have a 9mm) and then save the brass. Buy up the primers and powders when they dip before the next surge and I would also advice picking up bullets as well. Revolvers or oddball rifle cartridges, it is always worthwhile to reload. Shotguns, I don't bother.

391 I have one of the early GP-100's and it is still as solid as a bankvault despite a lot of rounds down range including magnums. That particular design fits many hands with different grips because that GP100 Ruger is unique in that it has a tang to fit grips, not a grip frame as such so you can go quite small in circumference to quite large. Easy to also take apart for cleaning compared with Smiths or Colts.

One thing though, the forcing cone is at a much shallower angle than Smiths or Colts and without some alterations, it is not as friendly to lead bullets. Plated or fmj, etc. are fine though. Rugers are also a bit rougher and harder to tune its trigger. Best to simply dry fire it a lot and you can adjust springs easily.

Posted by: whig at February 13, 2022 09:07 PM (Iq9dF)

392 Nurse, I fired .357 Magnum out of my Python snub nose ONCE. Unless you want to blind and deafen yourself and your target(s) with the fireball, .357 Magnum is useless and impossible to control with the thin Colt service grips. But .38 Special is well behaved. It's the only ammo I'll feed it. I'm sure using Hogue or Pachmayr rubber grips would help, but then that Python snub nose isn't really concealable anymore.

397 I took two of my guns out to the back deck Friday to shake some of the dust out. Bedside VP9 and the Ruger 1911 Commander (wears the same Hogue slip-on as the one upthread). HK banged out 30 rounds and made the little steel downrange go 'dwong'. 1911 did as well, but had one FTF that a tap-rack-bang would not correct, it was on the last round and got hung up going into the feed ramp. Not sure what the deal was on that one.

Both had been sitting around for months, so it might've just been that the 1911 needed to be lubed, but it was put away thus and I would've expected that the eight previous rounds would've warmed things up nicely. 230gr FMJ ball, same as in town.

You might choke on the price, but find a Wiley Clapp Competition edition, and you'll have very nearly the equivalent of a S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman. The Ruger is ever so slightly stouter than an "L" frame S&W, but not as big as the "N" frame -28.

The Clapp edition gets you as good a double action trigger as you can get in the Ruger's lockwork, and it is in a word, superb. Price difference? About what you'd pay a skilled Ruger specialist to do a trigger job on a plain ol' GP-100, but the Clapp is Good to Go, right outta the box.

404 I happen to like snubbies and have carried them in the past. Smith J Frames are pretty accurate and the triggers can be tuned quite nicely. They are very concealable and fit well with a number of unorthodox carry options such as ankle (good for driving or as backup), belly band, pocket carry, etc. Federal has a 130 grain HST that resembles the old hollow base wadcutter turned backwards that has outstanding ballistics for the size of the piece.

Ruger SP100 or the rare Security snubbies are pretty heavy as are the few K Frame snubbies around but those soak up recoil nicely even in .357 magnum in some cases.

On occasion, I even carry a Rossi 68 in .32 S&W Long with Buffalo Bore ammo walking doggies. It carries six cartridges and Buffalo Bore makes some decent coyote defenders with that particular cartridge. Good penetration with not much expansion and has a 3 inch barrel with a gold bead front sight.

Posted by: RI Red

Nope, Wolff springs makes a kit where you simply swap out mainsprings until you get the pull you want that pops your primers.

My GP100 is well broken in from use and dry firing to the point it is buttersmooth. Ruger uses a lot of castings and their trigger group is not hard to remove from the revolver but is not that friendly without jigs to reassemble if you do a detail disassembly. You can stone both sides of the hammer which helps and if you have a delicate touch and good mechanical sense, you can reduce the friction in a couple of places. It is however, harder to tune than a Smith.

In addition, the GP 100 benefits from its beefy cylinder (in any revolver) because they act like a flywheel that seems to lessen trigger pull when broken in.

No problem Anti,
Do go to the AR15 dot com AR thread though. It is actually pretty funny at times to see fanboys of one or the other sort of expensive toys or gadgets get disappointed because it doesn't hold up.

Full auto mag dumps are hard on firearms.

The related AK thread is also informative about parts that break over time.

442 I've noted here in previous gun threads my handguns are in the expensive calibers, because every time I price anything, I always am seeing the cost/round as compared to 9mm, which I don't have.

So I think I settled on a 9, and will get the Walther PPQ. I love all things German, like motorcycles, cars, eyeglasses, and power tools (Festool), so the PPQ will be a nice addition.

And a reason to stock up on rounds at under 50 cents per.

The gunsmith at Impact Guns is supposedly a fine Ruger revolver Smith. He will do a trigger job on a GP100 for about $100.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo
--------
The major difference between golden age Smiths/Colts, etc. was forged parts are simply easier to polish and clean up than cast. So, often the easier way is just dry fire it monotonously until you polish the internals that way. That is also the way to do Rossis, Taurus (older ones), and Charters.
Dunno about MIM parts used in today's firearms as I would be dubious to try to clean those up by filing and stoning. Both the Security Six and the later GP100, as solid frames, have trigger groups much like a Garand which makes it a bit more complex to disassemble and reassemble it. A good guide if you want to go into it is Jerry Kunhausen's Shop Manuals as it has detailed instructions with pictures on virtually every single part and diagrams of how the action functions. Also well advised for other classic firearms. FWIW, Spyderco makes an excellent 3 part waterstone file set specifically for trigger tuning for about $50. Easier to use than oilstones.

Power Custom did have jigs for doing trigger jobs on a lot of handguns. I would though advise using marking fluid as each Ruger is a bit different because of casting process. Some of the newer ones use MIM parts and I would find out which parts in that revolver were (Metal Injected Molding) parts. Some of those have voids and other such nasty surprises such as thin hardened shells from the process versus forged parts. Think Ruger has the casting part down but some other makes using cast parts, you see the same problem.

Have you tried it out? I considered it for EDC couldn't get over the mag release - very unobtrusive to the point that I had to concentrate way to hard to find it and then to actuate it. So the idea of a 365 - which I really like otherwise - was set aside in favor of something of similar dimensions with more accessible controls. 483 I have a lifelong appreciation for mechanical things, and the movements in many of the watches are really industrial art. Lots of satisfaction in getting one keeping time again!

Posted by: Weasel
---------------
It is good to enjoy it. I prefer woodworking to metal working and do repairs on mechanical things simply due to cost, time, finding competent workers, etc.

I built AR's because I simply did not find what I wanted at the prices I wanted to pay--by the time you are tooled up, then the marginal cost keeps dropping after the initial tooling expense. You also learn from building or rebuilding things how to keep them maintained in the long run as well as troubleshooting.

I am lucky that I have an excellent gunsmith in town but like most, he is always backed up.

Good show. Depending on your die set mfg, the seating die is also the crimping die but you have to normally readjust the die for the separate operations. On mass reloads for semi autos, I personally use the Ruger Factory Crimp die rather than mess with seating and crimping. Runs about 10-11 bucks for the die itself and it works with other die sets just fine.

Also I always check gauge my reloads--you can use your pistol's barrel to do it and occasionally on earlier 9mm's, you can find differences in the barrel throat. I have an older Sig from Germany that has a shallow throat and does not like some bullet profiles like the Hornady XTP's. As they used FMJ, it works with that profile or hollowpoints using similar ogives just fine.

The M&P is a tried and true firearm with plenty of accessories. The performance version sidesteps buying an aftermarket trigger as the trigger is already tuned by S&W armorers. Should have the better than std. sights as well.

522 520 No problem Chappyman66. Occasionally you can also find parts guns at Everygunpart dot com. They buy firearms where the receiver is chopped but the rest of the parts are for sale in a lot.

523 Late to the party tonight. Today I bought a gub. It's an Eibar Ruby type, .32 ACP, made in Spain, circa 1920-something. Made by Garat Anitua y Cia., Eibar, Espana. Aside from the serial number, no other markings. Best guess, it was made after the end of the WWI French contract, and the start of the period in which they began date-coding them, 1827-1930.

Went out to the desert, and ran 36 rounds through it. Twice, I was able to run thorugh all nine rounds in the mag without a hitch, and twice both myself and my shooting partner had multiple failures to load, with the round winding up wedged at a 45 degree angle, nose up. Will have to examine it carefully to see what is causing it. Maybe the magazine is not seating fully?

524 When that PLAAF pilot flew into the EP-3 over the South China Sea twenty years ago, his aircraft was described as an "F-8". So one of the cable channels created an animation using a Crusader. Should have been a Chinese J-8D, which kind of looks like what would happen if an F-4 took a MiG-21 out and showed her a good time.

525 Right now it appears like Movable Type is the best
blogging platform available right now. (from what I've read) Is that what you are using on your blog?
