Daily Tech News 20 January 2022

Top Story

  • Disinformation is mostly bullshit. (Harpers)

If you read the article, note that much of it is biting satire. The point is that most of the claims being made regarding disinformation are themselves disinformation - or more specifically, utterly baseless, pseudoscientific garbage.

  • Not that this is going to stop anyone, or even slow them down much. (ZDNet)

Australia is demanding to know why Google and Facebook aren't censoring "disinformation" faster.

While our government is as shitty as America's in this respect and unconstrained by our constitution, I have no sympathy whatsoever for the Big Tech companies that gleefully dug this hole for themselves.

9 Morning and evening to Mr. and Mrs. America/Australia and all the ships at sea! Let's go to press! Flash!

I'm up earlier than I intended, again, though it's not too bad. It's warm outside, 62 F. We're supposed to get rain, though, and plummeting temps this midday; then cold and rain tomorrow, and cold through the weekend at least. Not Wisconsin cold, but chilly for here. I for one welcome our new ice-bucket overlords; how about you?

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is doing pretty well, for him. I checked with the vet and he is supposed to get his injection under the skin, not into the muscle. I'm glad to hear it. I'd be likely to hit an artery or a nerve, and hilarity would ensue.

The late Marie-Antoinette, the smart black longhaired cat, used to do that. I swear she had a clock in her head. If you got up at 5 to feed her, the next day she would bug you at 4:30.

The late great Wolf, another black longhair, would climb on the bed and paw gently at my hair and scalp. I'd brush him away, but then I was awake anyway. I'd wait a half hour to feed him so he wouldn't think his tactics worked. Though of course, they did; he did it often, though not as annoyingly as Marie.

I miss them both.

Then they'd do things like climb under the covers and sleep next to me (Marie) or follow me into the bathroom, sit on the counter, and paw gently at me if I stopped petting too soon (Wolf). There is something special about longhaired black cats, I guess.

The author did mention "Hidden Persuaders" which I read in my early teens. I think the movie 'Fight Club' paid homage to that concept in the movie theater scene where a single frame of a pornographic image was spliced into a movie.

28 Yes, we do have our favorite animal friends. I've loved them all, but Marie and Wolf are the two I'd most like to have back. Is it a coincidence that both were longhaired black cats? Maybe. I've had more than one red tabby, two tuxedo cats, a couple of tricolors, Chekov the baby panda, and others. All special, all individuals, all good friends of mine. But the two black cats stand out for different reasons. I suspect black cats tend to be more easygoing and adaptable, and possibly smarter, than the general run of feline.

31 I think overall, this debacle is the confluence of several different "trends" and developments, none of them very good.

We've seen the rise of "credentialism" in recent years. It stems from an emphasis on rule or leadership by experts, or technocracy. This goes back to at least the FDR days - the so-called brain trust, or maybe Wilson.

In any case Americans have long had it drilled into their heads that some subjects are just too difficult to understand, let the pros handle it. They've got you, and society, and everyone's best interest in mind. It's dangerous and silly, to let the hick rubes in flyover JesusLand decide anything, after all. Democrats, for all their speeches about Democracy, don't much care for voters, or voting, or representative government.

But the end result is we're seeing genuine, no-shit Scientific Experts, the stars in their professions with years and years of research and experience with infectious diseases, getting censored and kicked off the Internet for spreading "misinformation" - by some flunky at YouTube, who can't even balance a checkbook or change a tire. It is literally insane. Free speech, open inquiry and all that stuff is messy, but...

35 I should point out, I'm not "anti-intellectual". Far from it, in fact I probably trend towards a kind of elitism, even if not a member. And I'm weird - I really do want what's best for society.

But that isn't what's happening. The "experts" aren't. They are grifters and con artists, wearing skin suits and demanding respect. It's a very real and difficult problem, because people are almost hard wired to seek out authority. And they have a multi-gazillion dollar propaganda program to dazzle everyone with smoke and mirrors. So you have to get people to think on their own, and they don't want to do that.

"Most qualified candidate EVAH!!"

Me too. I never connected my phone with my late BMW, and I haven't with the current Buick.

When we picked up our new lease last spring, the lease 'specialist' went back inside to get a screwdriver to attach the license plate. She came back outside, attached the plate, then offered to show us how to sync our phones with the vehicle. She was shocked that I had already done that in two minutes. Apparently that's a procedure beyond the capability of most car buyers. Heaven forbid that people don't get notifications of Facebook 'likes' while they drive.

40 Yabut, at least in the days of say, FDR - there were at least some arguably highly intelligent people involved government, at least tangentially.

They still might have screwed things up at times, but let's face it - at one time, getting into College, almost any college, was really hard. Money didn't have that much to do with it. If you didn't have the chops, you didn't get in.

Now? Anybody that can fog a mirror. Get a "loan", get some phony-balogna degree in some made up discipline. Voila! Another "expert" is born.

Years ago, my father (in his late '60s at the time, somewhere around there) was on the board of a little local outfit (county Farm Bureau organization). They needed to hire a new receptionist and a secretary. The current ones were retiring.

So, on the board, they got all the resumes and written responses from the applicants. From that, they were to winnow it down and pick a few, which they would interview at the next meeting.

My father was aghast at how dumb these applicants with college degrees appeared from their written responses. He had only a high-school education himself, but was shaking his head at what passed for a college educated person. He sort of asked me, hey college boy, what do you think about this?

And there is the downfall of education right there. If everybody goes to college, a college degree becomes worthless.

Doctors are not independent anymore. They're just employees of large corporate outfits. In the old days, doctors were some of the most independent, no-nonsense, no-bullshit types out there.

Not any more. Their drones, serving their corporate masters. They tell them what to do. It's these drones that determine you medical care, not the MDs.

Once in a while I have to remind my wife the value of having someone around with some basic understanding of technology. The car company owner of our vehicle, as part of the lease agreement, wants to look at our driving record every year, but they need our permission. They send two emails. The first email provides a security code. The second, provides a link where the security code is required. The wife opens the second email first and flounders around openly cursing for ten minutes, but she's pissed at me so not asking my help. So I let her keep going. Finally the light bulb goes on and she opens the first email received and secures the security code. She wastes about 20 minutes total. Once she finished... finally... I went through the process on my email account in less than two minutes, opening the emails in the correct sequence. She saw I was finished quickly, without one curse uttered, and got even more pissed off at me for not helping her.

I had mentioned the BBC series called Tenko which is a fictionalized account of European women POWs of the Japanese. Had also referenced a book in the series The Dutch in Wartime that talks about the horrors the Dutch civilians endured as prisoners of the Japanese including being 'comfort women.'

Well Dr. Felton has a book titled The Real Tenko: Extraordinary True Stories of Women Prisoners of the Japanese that was published in 2019.

61 In the beginning, there were ABC, NBC, and CBS, and they were good. Midcentury American man could come home after eight hours of work and turn on his television and know where he stood in relation to his wife, and his children, and his neighbors, and his town, and his country, and his world. And that was good...

**

Let me add another unrelated thing that we've seen in our household and I'm sure is seen throughout the country.

When there wasn't boring crap on TV after school, when Saturday morning cartoons went away, when there was suddenly kids' programming available 24 hours a day every day? Shockingly, kids didn't want to go outside any longer. There was no need to. There was nothing to get away from.

And then smartphones and the internet hit.

This rock has actually speeded up its spinning over the past couple of years. A mean solar day as of 2020 was 86,399.999s as opposed to 86,400.003s back the early 70s when the second was last defined.

If that continues, we'll need a negative leap second in a few years. It's not expected to, just a temporary speed-up caused by some mass redistributions which will smooth out and settle down.

*

So many variables. New HR manager at some point in the chain for county employees or healthcare admitting/employees or schools etc. probably. Same numbers, increased enthusiasm. I mean testing.

Deaths is the key, though, and I'm betting it's zero or just a handful even though there are 50,000 cases. Heck, Charlotte, NC has a population of 1.1M and only 66 deaths over the last two weeks. NC (10.5M) only had 507 deaths.

It's why there's such a huge focus on cases.

We as a country are raising generations who no longer know how to be bored. That's not going to be helpful to the poor little bastards when they get older.

85 >> I remember some claim a couple of years ago that a particular hurricane was so severe that it slowed down the speed of the planets rotation.

I'm not gonna say now, but I can't see a hurricane slowing changing things. You need mass redistribution to do this (think of figure skater pulling her arms in to speed her spin. We can't change mass, but we can change our moment of intertia -- momentum conservation requires the spin speed change).

Does a hurricane do anything to permanently move that much mass around. Massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions do. Our ability to measure time with atomic clocks is so accurate that we can see these tiny little changes in the earth's rotational speed.

The Moon plays a big role in the slowing of the earth's rotational speed via a tidal spin-orbit interaction. The Moon is already in tidal lock with the Earth, keeping the same face towards the earth. The Moon is rotating, once per month, or orbit.

The Earth will eventually becoming tidally locked itself. This is the main secular slowing down of the earth's rotation. As it does so, to conserve total angular momentum, the Moon will be thrown in a higher and higher orbit.

However, the Sun will likely go red giant an maybe expand to the orbit of the earth before that happens.

And, there's a small non-zero chance one of the inner planets, including the earth could be ejected from the solar system by chaotic effects before then as well.

Chaotic effects limit long term solar system orbital calculations to about 200K years or so. After that, "anything can happen" with various probabilities.

I looked that up. The 200K year thing is "near absolute certainty". The actual "chaotic point" were you can't be sure of anything is anywhere from 5 to 200 million years.

So, after 200K years, your dynamical orbital ephemerides go a little fuzzy (you can be certain of the seasons and stuff like that, the shape of Mars' orbit), but you're not into "anything can happen" chaos yet.

That takes a few million years.

In about 600 million, due to increasing luminosity of the Sun, complex life will be killed off. 99% of plant species can't do photosynthesis. After about 1.1 billion years, life of any kind will be impossible.

144 I swear this rock spins faster as we are getting older
Posted by: My Life is Insanity

Seems like it doesn't it? My mom told me this would happen. . .

I can tell you why that happens, and how to reverse the process, sadly you won't believe me...

1. The brain uses the muscles in the face and scalp as part of it's timing apparatus. When it starts a "clock cycle" it waits until it gets a signal reflection back from those muscles to start the next cycle. As we age those muscles become weaker and flabby, and the "clock speed" of the brain slows down. As a result of that slowed down clock speed time seems to pass faster.

2. When you lift weights to build muscles, what you are actually doing is stressing the tendon attachment points to the bones. (Tendons attach muscles to bones). This stressing of the attachment points sends the nervous system a signal to grow the muscle. All you have to do is massage the attachment points of the facial and scalp muscles, and those muscles will grow, and time will slow back down. Get an anatomy book and find where the muscles attach to the skull.

3. Time now passes as slowly for me at age 73 as it did as a child.

Look to see if you have the official Yellow Star on your government ID. If you do, your face is already in the system.

Fun facts though. Having your identify photo taken then losing a lot of weight on a low carb diet makes your facial ID fail. Changes a lot of the defining characteristics.

Thing is, facial ID isn't anywhere as good as fingerprint or iris or retina sans.

No but you don't have to have a furnace.

Virginia in my opinion is a four season state with a little bit longer summer, and a little bit shorter winter. Heat pump should work well except in the extremes of summer or winter.

It's the exceptions that scare me.

257 From the disinformation article, because it bears repeating:

However well-intentioned these professionals are, they don't have special access to the fabric of reality.

261 "I should point out, I'm not "anti-intellectual". Far from it, in fact I probably trend towards a kind of elitism, even if not a member. And I'm weird - I really do want what's best for society."

One of the biggest lies of our time - and one of the most destructive - is the idea that self-proclaimed "intellectuals" have a monopoly on the intellect. My family straddles class divisions - my mother's brother taught biochemistry at Harvard, and my father's brother ran a bowling alley in Fond du Lac - and I can tell you from experience that intelligence, as defined by the ability to analyze complex problems rationally, is spread across the board. I will say, too, that some of the most credulous people I've known are in academia and government, the reason being that they only talk to each other - and as any engineer will tell you, positive feedback is always destructive.
