  • Microsoft is buying Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. (PC Perspective)

    In cash.

Activision has been around since 1980 and is the publisher of classic titles such as Build-A-Bear Workshop: Welcome to Hugsville and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare - Jackal Assault VR Experience. Blizzard was for years a license to print money with Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, and World of Warcraft, then they got woke and went broke.

I don't know if Microsoft can turn the beleaguered company around, but if anyone can do it, it's them, because they are still motivated by good old-fashioned greed - they don't even bother to pretend they are doing things for your own good.

Party Like It's 1980 Video of the Day

Did I mention that 1980s music videos were weird?

2 A good Wednesday morning to all from Da Swamp! Pixy, it's, what, 7 pm Wed. there?

Up early to work out a last time before the weather changes: rain tomorrow morning, temps dropping into what people here consider North Pole territory (highs in the 50s F. on Thursday, dropping to the 30s), and cold rain and chilly until Sunday. 'Bout time, says I. It's *winter* after all. The denizens here all want to go about dressed like Bart Simpson all year long, and wonder why they're cold in a T-shirt. I suppose that's why the Eddie Bauer store in the big mall here closed up a few years ago. Get a coat, people!

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is okay. I wonder if I have been giving him his injection in the wrong place. The vet office said subcutaneous, but vids I've consulted say it should be intramuscular. I've called his vet to check.

3 I am not even sure getting woke is the problem with Blizzard. More like they got lazy, harassed some ladies (allegedly) then went woke as cover.

When I think about the great games I think of Diablo (of course) both the first and second one. Addictive fun with some cinematic movies that sold the experience (think Wrath of the Lich King opening movie for the same type of thing.) Diablo 3 with the real money auction house was one of the earliest versions of monetization and ripping out the soul and mechanics of the game (the constant gear churn hit) in the name of trying to force people to the real money auction house. Pretty much everything was downhill from there.

So greedy, lazy and stupid.

Double blind study on gluten and IBS. Cliff notes: Not much difference. Wife suggested "BRAT" diet which equals adding bananas, rice, apple sauce, and toast to diet. Better outcome for me than gluten reduction. Never had the issue before communist covid.

Booking systems collapsing in a screaming heap so that no-one could get to their flights? Without the massive remediation effort that happened, that was 100% guaranteed.

34 When Y2K came around the company I worked for had all the suppliers filling out a form showing they were Y2K ready. One of our oil suppliers showed they weren't and I had to check out why not.

Because they lied to their corporate HQ in Japan that some equipment wasn't so that they could get an upgrade added into the budget. The system they were using was timed to run X at a certain time of the day, but it didn't give a good rats patoot what year it was, or even what day it was.

I guess I first started coding in the mid 70's and the very last thing on my mind was the year 2000. By 1998 I began fixing all the data bases.

In retrospect, there weren't too many people in the 70's thinking about it either. All of a sudden it was a realization that 'oh, shit' stuff is gonna stop moving forward and instead go back to the year 1900.

No, it was all C and Java written on Unix systems. Software that broke, from what I can see, was either old mainframe stuff that stored time as separate fields, front end software that only asked for two digits for things like birth dates, or database applications that only stored the last two digits of the year to save space.

A buddy of mine got a gas bill for, like, two billion dollars, which was pretty amusing, but I don't know the details of that system.

After the Y2K stuff went bust all the contracting companies were trying to hype the "2034 problem" so they could find something for their Y2K teams to do. Because the older systems were 32 bit, you could conceivably have your Unix system roll back to January of 1970 in that year. I think it was that year, anyway.

Of course, all that stuff is already 64 bits, and by the time the 64 bit epoch rolls over I doubt there will be any humans around to care.

67 Call of Duty: Vengeance has a Battle of Midway mission. A guy on YouTube has an hour take down on it. I only made it through 14 minutes.

He is right, Enterprise AA fit is post Midway. Why is there a guy in US Army uniform giving the strike briefing to VS-6? Yeah that is odd to see a poster saying Army Air Forces on a carrier. Plus a modern artificial horizon in the Dauntless.

Now things he didn't catch. He complained about the shape of the TBD on an aircraft recognition flyer; shouldn't there be the Zero, Val, and Kate there? Missed they swapped Dauntless models from the -3 to a -4, big tell is the propeller. Oil cooler on the TBDs is twice the size of the real thing. When did carriers get ATC, "tower to Sugar Seventeen cleared for take-off." And the scout planes in period records are called Sail, as in Sail Seventeen.

*gag*

Imagine getting a root canal, then a second root canal, then a booster root canal, and STILL getting a cavity in that tooth. Then forcing everyone to use your dentist or they lose their job & livelihood.

79 I just hope OM is not in one of those killer hospitals where all they're interested in is getting the covid bounty from the FedGov.

But since he's still ill I have doubts he got treated right away with IVM or HCQ so that means he's at the mercy of the establishment medical community which is not amenable to those and anyway it's too late now.

Take your zinc, quercetin, vitamin c and d and toss in any others that are anti oxidant/anti inflammatory and that boosts the immune system. Take some ivermectin in what ever form you can get it immediately you have any symptoms that strike you as extraordinary and come after a potential event where you might have acquired the virus. I you have extra IVM then you can take a chance and take it without being sure. It's better taken daily as a preventive but because of the witch doctors we can't get that much unless you've planned ahead. Also be advised that the doses of the paste that was recommended a year ago may not be sufficient now. Take it more often just in case. The stuff has almost zero side effects unless you take an extremely large dose.

Resveratrol, Quercetin, IVM, and HCQ all have the same mechanism of action which is assisting zinc to be absorbed into the cell.

Funny thing is, UTC wasn't formally defined until 1972, but Unix epoch time is based on 0 being Jan 1, 1970. Now, they used a 32-bit integer to represent that originally. How about times before 1970? Interpret the time_t integer as *signed*. That leads to the Year 2038 problem.

If you intepret it as unsigned, you get another 68 years, but can't represent anything earlier than 1970.

Solution, go to a 64-bit signed representation, sign extended the negative numbers. You get 22x the age of the universe coverage. No problem there at all. That is what most systems are doing.

Also, if you want to see some monkey business, look at leap seconds and UNIX time. Lots of monkey business has to be done there. And none of it satisfactory.

87 And I should mention that Midway mission has a lot more problems.

You are treated to a cinematic of VT-6 TBDs taking off. Then you ride the center elevator up to see nothing but SBDs. The dive bombers take off before the torpedo planes because they need less deck to take off.

If the planes have engines running about to launch, I should not be seeing a guy pushing a trolley with a 500lb bomb on the flight deck.

So you the player finally reach your dive bomber, S17. As your radio-operator/gunner gets in, the pilot's seat is empty but the engine is already running. *ack*

93 And yeah, the FLCCC site is well worth checking occasionally.

Ivermectin is an active anti-viral. IIRC zinc is a great preventative supplement and should definitely be in the kit with some quercertin, but it can't do it alone and it's my understanding that it's not healthy to take anti-COVID levels daily because it screws up the balance of other metals in your system, mainly copper. Read and inform yourself and then make the best decision for you and your family.

More troubling are "night sweats", that I'm told are common with low blood sugar. Fasting contributes to this, and I've no doubt this is the cause. Is this a cause for concern, anyone know? The "official" med sites are a bit unclear on this. I'm not on any medication or diabetic or anything like that. But I need to maintain a reduction in calories one way or another. I used an eyedropper to put some on crackers with my cheese (maybe altogether a teaspoon full), and my wife put some on her salad. We both agreed it's not a bad taste but at 120 calories per teaspoon not exactly the best thing for weight control.

Hopefully, the Omicron is the final battle and will resolve in the next few weeks.

The experiments in both the UK and Oregon used unheated hemp oil. Heating it may destroy the mechanism of action per a SanFran Moron here one morning.

There have been no experiments that I've seen on the efficacy of smoking or vaping delta 9 as a preventative. In this country it's almost impossible to secure marijuana for official lab testing.

Hemp oil is kinda similar to maple syrup in that they both have hundreds of chemicals in them and it's virtually impossible to discern which one is causing some desired effect.

Also, look up our Pfizer Pfriend and "Trovan, Nigeria". Trovan was an investigational anti-meningitis drug they were testing. Pfizer did clinical trials in Nigeria.

They took advantage of dirt-poor, pig-ignorant 3rd world parents to do experiments on their children they wouldn't get away with in 1st world countries. Did a trial of Trovan against the standard treatment, where they (allegedly) lowered the dose of the standard treatment in order to make Trovan look better.

Lawsuits followed. Now, Julian Assange and Wikileaks published some shit showing the US govt knew (and apparently approved) of Pfizer attempting to blackmail and bribe Nigerian officials into sweeping that under the rug.

I have an overcoat I haven't worn in 13 years. It's only for when I wear a suit and the only time I need to wear a suit is going to Mass. But I'm going from a heated house to a heated car to a heated church. I figure I won't die of hypothermia and get eaten by wolves walking from one to another.

There are people, affectionately called "Snowbirds" who deliberately leave cold areas to warm areas during *winter* to avoid cold.

I have considered that. I consider those people short-sighted. It isn't every couple of years; we usually have one cold spell in January, sometimes more than one and into February. If you know you'll be outdoors during those 2 months, it behooves you to *buy at least one warm coat*.

If they can't be bothered to do that, they have no right to complain that "It's cold."

Leap seconds do not introduce any weirdness into "UNIX time." "UNIX time" is no more and no less than a count of the number of seconds since some specified time or "epoch" traditionally midnight on 1 January 1970. Adding a second to a day here and there does not change the number of seconds that have elapsed since that time.

It does change how the date and time are displayed, but that's a display issue not a time issue.

Au contrarie. A postive leap second required a second be repeated. That is, a given Unix time during that leap second period in no longer unique. A negative leap second, which has never been needed, would render a whole second's worth of UNIX time to be invalid.

Also, leap seconds are defined as occurring in the day before. That is a day with 86,401 seconds, not 86,400. The UNIX time handling of leap seconds places that extra day in the next day.

See the NIST critique of UNIC leap-second handling. Now, since software running, expecting time to advance monotonically and never be discontinuous and jump, many UNIX systems handle the leap second by slewing the clock rate, slowing it down so that extra second gets stretched out over some acceptable period.

Yes, it is monkey business. Big Time.

Time is just a count of seconds since a particular time. Adding one to a number makes...the next bigger number. And the second after that is...just one more.

A negative leap second, which has never been needed, would render a whole second's worth of UNIX time to be invalid.

Removing a second from a minute doesn't change the count of seconds since a particular time.

You really don't understand how this works. All you're doing is adding 1 to a count every second. Changing the mapping of seconds to days doesn't change that fact.

201 >> You really don't understand how this works.

I understand very well how this works. You don't. You show a naive understanding. You need to understand the need for leap seconds, which is a compromise between UT1, astronomical time, and atomic time, best notion of constant definition of second we have, known at TAI. Your notion would be okay if you were using TAI, which is now about 37 seconds ahead of UT1, and thus UTC.

UNIX handles leap seconds by repeating the second after midnight, UTC when a leap second is inserted. During a leap second insertion, UNIX time repeats the first second after midnight. Thus there are two seconds worth of time with the same UNIX time stamp.

For those systems that slew the clock rate to avoid the discontinuity, the extra second is just stretched out over time over the next day.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 19, 2022 07:53 AM (Mzdiz)

Now, since software running, expecting time to advance monotonically and never be discontinuous and jump, many UNIX systems handle the leap second by slewing the clock rate, slowing it down so that extra second gets stretched out over some acceptable period.

Leap seconds don't make time discontinuous or make time jump around. Look, suppose the second before a leap second has the count of a million, then the leap second has the count of a million plus one, and the first second of the following minute has the count of a million plus two. When looking at the count, which is all the time is, then you have no idea that there was a leap second there.

What makes time jump around and speed up and slow down is time synchronization with external clocks. That's why you should not use "wall clock time" for your timeout values, but that has nothing to do with leap seconds. We eventually switched to "uptime counts" for our timeouts for that reason.

205 Changing the mapping of seconds to days doesn't change that fact.
Posted by: Cybersmythe at January 19, 2022 07:41 AM (ezpv1)

Leap seconds, or leap anythings, doesn't change the Julian time (microseconds since the most recent defined epoch of 1/1/2000 12:00:00.000 AM), right? It just changes what that the time is in regular calendar time? So there's a discontinuity in the mapping between Julian time and standard time.

No, you don't. Adding a leap second doesn't change the count of seconds that have elapsed. It changes the mapping of seconds to days. That's a totally different thing and quite easily handled.

You don't. You show a naive understanding.

You haven't explained why changing the number of seconds in a particular minute changes the count of the number of seconds since a particular time. You cannot explain that because it does not.

I understand the why of leap seconds, it is to make the sun appear on a particular meridian at noon on average, but adding a second to a particular day to make that work doesn't change the count of the number of seconds since epoch. The whole point of doing time this way, as a count of seconds, is to avoid all of the horsing around with daylight saving time and leap seconds and all the stuff like that, and it works quite well. However, it seems the message got lost somewhere.

Read the NIST on the leap second, and problems here:
https://tinyurl.com/yv3ww2m9

See this Wiki, explaining how UNIX system handle leap seconds:

https://tinyurl.com/urze9b2t

Quote:
When a leap second occurs, the UTC day is not exactly 86400 seconds long and the Unix time number (which always increases by exactly 86400 each day) experiences a discontinuity. Leap seconds may be positive or negative. No negative leap second has ever been declared, but if one were to be, then at the end of a day with a negative leap second, the Unix time number would jump up by 1 to the start of the next day. During a positive leap second at the end of a day, which occurs about every year and a half on average, the Unix time number increases continuously into the next day during the leap second and then at the end of the leap second jumps back by 1 (returning to the start of the next day).

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 19, 2022 08:11 AM (Mzdiz)

213
You see, the notion of UNIX time, and converting to day, like Jan 20th, 2022, all depends on a day being exactly 86,400 seconds long. The formula has leap years built in.

Problem is, with adding an extra second, one day thus as 86, 401 seconds. This fucks everything up.

The standard definition is that the first second after a leap second event is to be repeated. That is in the second, the UNIX time is not unique, but could represent two distinct times.

218 >> That's a totally different thing and quite easily handled.

No, it's not, and that's what the leap second has to be represented as a repeat of the UNIX time number.

The leap second, in UTC notation is 61st second in the last minute before midnight. 11:59:60.

Unix system behavior for that is to for from 11:59.59 to 12:00:00 as normal, then jump back to 12:00:00 when the clock ticks to 12:00:01.

And again, most systems just slew the clock rate during the time to stretch that extra second out over a long period.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 19, 2022 08:35 AM (Mzdiz)

219 >> You haven't explained why changing the number of seconds in a particular minute changes the count of the number of seconds since a particular time. You cannot explain that because it does not.

You're right, but it depends on what definition of second you are using. The formula for converting UNIX seconds elapsed since the epoch of Jan 1, 1960 depends on every day being exactly 86, 400 seconds long.

If you use the UTI definition of second, which varies according the hiccups of the earth's rotation, you're good.

If you depend on the atomic time, definition of a second, you're not so good. When the second was last defined, the earth's mean solar day was 86,400.003 atomic time seconds.

But they demanded that UTC tick at atomic rate, but never be more the +/- .08 sec out of sync with UT1. Than requires leap seconds be added every so often.

But Unix time requires exactly 86,400 s per day. Hence the "monkey business" as I called it with the UNIX handling of a leap second.

As of 2020, the earth's rotation period has speed up (due to mass re distributions) to around 86.399.999 atomic time seconds per day. This has delayed the need for a leap second.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 19, 2022 08:54 AM (Mzdiz)

220
You see, the "horsing around" as you call it, is all necessary to make UTC be within .08 seconds of UT1, as represented by UNIX time.

You want to keep time with TIA, you're right. Want to keep time with UTC, then you've got do UNIX time monkey business with leap seconds.

224 >I don't know if Microsoft can turn the beleaguered company around

I don't think that's their goal. MS wants gaming to be a subscription service like Netflix. That's why they tried to make game sharing/selling impossible with the XB1 launch, why they're releasing consoles with no disc drive, why they've been buying up publishers. It's to get the rights so they can control what's in their Ultimate Game Pass subscription.

If they never release another Blizzardesque title the acquisition is still solid because it drives people to the subscription service.
