  • You have thirty seconds to comply with Google Play Policies. (Sylvia van Os)

This is a story that is repeated everywhere, every day, a story I am dealing with myself right now: Big Tech handing down ultimatums to independent developers demanding that they immediately fix their apps but not providing any way to actually comply.

In this case it's an app originally in Dutch which Google itself mistranslated and then rejected from the Play Store on the basis of their own mistranslation. The app itself has translations by native speakers but Google is using machine translation, getting it wrong, and banning the app on the basis of its own mistakes.

They rejected the same app because the developer didn't provide a test login when the app doesn't have logins at all.

I'm personally dealing with another Big Tech company that insists I investigate an incident but is unable to provide me with any information about the incident.

Other people simply get their accounts locked with no recourse, even though they followed the rules every step of the way. (Reddit)

Or get told there's no recourse and their account is permanently deleted beyond any home of recovery and then two weeks later everything is back again and the explanation is Oh yes, that happens.

As Lois McMaster Bujold wrote in Shards of Honor:
Put all the rotten eggs in one basket - and then drop the basket.

7 Mornin', all,

Up early to work out before returning to Crazyland, aka work. Once upon a time I called my office "the real world." Ha! Not no mo'.

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is doing pretty well. He worries me a little this morning: He's creeping over to sprawl very close to my feet. Usually he sprawls on the rug farther away. Someone here mentioned a new anti-arthritis drug developed specifically for cats; I need to look that name up and ask Chekov's vet. It'd be nice if we could ditch the oral drug for 1 injection.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at January 18, 2022 04:12 AM (c6xtn)

8 Pixy, thanks for asking about Chekov the great white-and-black beast. If it helps to picture him, think of a baby panda with a long bushy black tail, green eyes, and a pink nose. He's a Siberian -- and the tradition among breeders is to give them Russian names. His predecessor, who was also his aunt, I named Tatiana Romanova (James Bond reference, not history).

11 Mornin' again, all

Lucky the cat is still barely eating. Other than acting quiet and reserved instead of his normal goofy, I can't find anything that is hurting him. I got him to eat a very small amount of his usual food and he is drinking water. He still greets me with a nose boop and will cuddle and purr, but not with his usual enthusiasm.

Tried all kinds of different foods, he's just not interested.

I think a call to the vet is happening today

In this case claiming that the Omicron strain arrived in the country by mail.

I wouldn't actually scoff at this. My wife contracted some respiratory issue in November of 2019. A later chest scan revealed 'ground glass' abnormalities in her lungs, which is consistent with covid. It's been confirmed that covid was in Pennsylvania at that early date. I looked through my Amazon purchases in October and November of 2019 and there were a slew of them. Mostly inexpensive dresses, most likely originating from communist China.

It would be a real bummer if someone infected sneezed upon, then mailed some material to some random person in communist China and it brought their economy to a halt. But that's a terrible thing to say.

The only reason that communist China would be concerned about this is because they know damn well they'd do the same thing, if they haven't already.

The Japanese dropped ticks infected with bubonic plaque on them in WWII. They may look at biological warfare with a slightly indifferent point of view after that experience.

Almost perfect malign irony. See the latest post from Robert Malone on his Substack.

One of the "experts" who "fact-checked" Robert Malone on his "mass formation psychosis" -- telling us all that was all bullshit, no such thing -- was himself one the experts on using pysop techniques to control the population. Note the part about using an "optimum dose" of fear to nudge the population into doing what the elites what you to do.

- live your live in a monomania over success in one outre, useless endeavor
- travel to a rival/enemy foreign power to try to make your name in the world
- sell your life story to a fast food chain for a commercial because apparently you were so poor and downtrodden as a child that your evil parents only bought you two ponies, not three.

83 for old times sake, I just looked at the Texas Covid Dashboard again. It's a state run site that shows new and total cases and fatalities daily. Quite informative, especially as to what's going on with Omicron; cases have now soared far higher in either of the previous two waves; there were 54,000 new cases recorded over the weekend. BUT fatalities are still almost non-existent; balanced alongside those 54,000 new cases, there were only 4 new deaths. Overall, the numbers say that a person catching omicron, vaxxed or not, has less than a one tenth of one percent chance of dying from it, and for most people it's just going to be a bout of the flu. In fact, that's the same death rate the Flu has had every year.

a bunch of people have a bothersome cough right now, a handful of really at risk people will die from it. That's all omicron is.

105 There's a chance that McCarthy might end up doing some good things for us as speaker; if he does it will be an illustration of Uncle Milton's doctrine, "best to create a system where bad people have an incentive to do good things."

In this case, the new system after this fall's election will be one where our electorate is in control again, and an opportunistic politician with no core beliefs of his own might see that as a great opportunity to advance himself. McCarthy could be that man.
