The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"The streets were just empty. I had expected that they would be accustomed to the cold and there would be everyday life happening in the streets, but instead people were very wary of the cold." New Zealand photographer Amos Chapple

Quote II

“Well, I’ll help you. Put a period after Jesus and don’t question my faith.” Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX)

Quote III

Clearly, by its inaction, America is revealing its refusal to risk its own security in a war with Russia over a Ukraine whose sovereignty and territorial integrity are not vital U.S. interests sufficient to justify war with the largest country on earth with its huge arsenal of nuclear weapons. Patrick J. Buchanan

Quote IV

“More and more businesses are moving to productivity focused strategies to enable them to reduce worker hours without reducing pay.

“We are excited by the growing momentum and interest in our pilot program and in the four-day week more broadly." Joe O’Connor, pilot programme manager for 4 Day Week Global

And here I thought Carhartt Clothing was for rugged individuals. Its clothing may be but it's leadership looks dictatorial.

Speaking of Carhartt. No word if she was wearing insulated Carhartt bibs.

Onlookers were shocked as a woman driving across a frozen river in Canada crashed through the ice and plunged into the freezing water. But that isn’t the shocking part of this story. It seems that residents in Old Mill Way were further confused by the whole scenario when the driver stopped and posed for a selfie on the rear of her sinking car.

The woman, who has not yet been named by authorities, plunged into the Rideau River on Sunday evening at around 4:30 p.m., after wintery conditions seemingly froze the river solid.

There is nothing going on down on the Southern Border. Move along.

The two Guard soldiers were assisting Border Patrol agents in stopping a Chrysler 300 that was seen picking up six migrants, according to an incident report obtained by Army Times and a Texas law enforcement official who discussed preliminary investigative details on background.

The two soldiers jumped out of their “non-tactical” vehicle at the intersection of Rosemary Lane and Nogal Lane in the border sector south of Laredo, and one soldier approached the suspected smuggling vehicle, according to the incident report.

The driver “put the vehicle in reverse and then into drive” before gunning the vehicle in an apparent attempt to ram the first soldier, the incident report read. The second soldier then fired six rounds from his M4 carbine into the Chrysler’s radiator and hood.

Will the last last taxpayer of California shut off the lights when leaving?

SACRAMENTO, CA- According to reports, a new healthcare proposal would create a single-healthcare system and use increased taxes to fund it. The proposal would nearly double California’s tax revenue and possibly push even more people to move out of the state.

Jared Walczak, vice president of state projects at the Tax Foundation, told the Washington Examiner that if passed, the legislation would amount to a $163 billion per year tax increase that would effectively double state collections. If the tax-and-spend proposal were to become law, Walczak said:

“You would expect to see a substantial exodus of businesses and middle-and-high-income earners.”

Oh FFS!

After 70 Years, FDA Dumps Rules Regulating French Dressing
Meanwhile, 1-million expired COVID tests sitting in a Florida warehouse get FDA approval for use.

During the era of President Donald Trump, thousands of regulations were rolled back in many of the various agencies that have been merrily promulgating rules with no apparent stopping point.

When Biden took office, he reversed course…and is currently reaping the consequences.

However, in an intriguing move, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken a break from all its Covid-meddling to rescind regulations over French dressing.

Since 1950, the federal government has defined French dressing by a rigid set of standards that it had said would protect consumers from “economic adulteration,” or food fraud, and reflect their expectations about food.

Distinguished by its reddish-orange color and sweet taste, French dressing had been required to contain at least 35 percent vegetable oil, in addition to an acid, such as vinegar or lemon or lime juice.

But an industry group contended that the regulations were, well, passé. The standards, it said, hampered the ability of food companies to tweak their recipes to meet changing tastes and dietary needs. The group wondered: Why should French dressing be bound by regulations when most other dressings are not?

The Association of Dresses and Sauces (ADS) has been working on the issue for the last….23 years.

It's obvious that they didn't butter up the right bureaucrats.

It's called Freedom of Choice.

Not all heroes wear capes, but some of them regularly don robes (but certainly not masks) while fighting to make the world a better place—heroes like Supreme Court justice Neil Gorsuch, an early frontrunner for Washington Free Beacon Man of the Year.

When the Supreme Court justices returned from the holiday break earlier this month, all of them were wearing masks on the bench. Well, all of them except Gorsuch, who refused to cover his handsome face. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who typically sits next to Gorsuch, wasn't there. The Obama appointee took part in the proceedings via remote microphone set up in her chambers.

Or is this story about SCOTUS Fake News?

The Atlantic’s Nervous Breakdown

Perhaps this combination of therapeutic elite self-indulgence and doomsaying will keep the magazine chugging along, providing sufficient status and emotional satisfaction to Laurene Jobs that she will continue to provide the market-defying subventions to keep Atlantic staffers comfortably housed in Brownstone Brooklyn forever. But it’s a long way from the moral leadership the magazine boasts is part of the institution’s DNA. Citing their commitment to ending slavery, the Atlantic notes on its website, “When the founders of the Atlantic gathered in Boston in the spring of 1857, they wanted to create a magazine that would be indispensable for the kind of reader who was deeply engaged with the most consequential issues of the day.” Judging by its output today, the most consequential thing for the Atlantic is something far less profound: validating the often astonishingly petty anxieties of the 2020s urban elite.

Genius Award Winners

I guess she got her moneys worth.

A woman who tried to consume her money’s worth at an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet wound up at the hospital after binging on 32 rolls and more items.

Danielle Shapiro, 24, challenged herself at Sushi 85 in Mountain View, California, which charges $50 per person to dine in. In one sitting, Shapiro ate 32 sushi rolls, four gyoza dumplings, two jalapeño poppers, a bowl of edamame and a bowl of miso soup.

Yes gluttonous Genius Award Winner, the internet is forever.

There was a complete lack of Christmas spirit in North Pole.

Imagine if you live in the North Pole (Alaska). Everyone is happy, awaiting for another Christmas to arrive, until some dullard decides to rob someone on North Santa Claus Lane.

This reads like a Christmas nightmare. A man involved in an attempted robbery in North Pole, Alaska, was killed Wednesday — on North Santa Claus Lane.

In a news release, the North Pole Police Department said that Adam Selid, 18, was shot during a gun sale that turned into an attempted robbery, KTUU-TV reported. The shooting took place in the parking lot near a Taco Bell at North Santa Claus Lane, according to the television station.

Modern medicine is amazing at times. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Cameron Newsom, 42, from Colorado, America had been living a normal life with her young family before her freak cancer diagnosis.

After a years-long ordeal, Cameron was able to have her tongue replaced by skin and muscle tissue from her thigh.

Cameron's first cancer scare came after she developed two white spots on her tongue.

However, the spots weren't painful and when the results came back negative for any signs of cancer, she was told not to worry.

The United States Chair Force continues to work on the Kinetic Strike system, AKA "Rods from God" (20 foot long telephone pole size tungsten rods dropped from 1000 miles in orbit):

https://tinyurl.com/Project-Thor-BOOM

I'm currently trying to figure out how much energy is involved in obe of these rods impacting the Earth, but I suck at maths.

How do you get the heavy tungsten rods into space, you ask? Simple! You use the StratoLauncher, which is a yuge aircraft that I saw flying high over Edwards AFB in Cali last week and which can carry a 230 ton rocket payload:

John McCain and Randall "Duke" Cunningham have demonstrated that physical courage does not equal moral courage.

Not sure about Crenshaw specifically, but it's the power that absolutely corrupts. Marco Rubio talked about how being a Senator meant he could ask a donor entity to meet him on a street corner at 2 a.m. with a paper bag containing $10,000 in paper money, and no one thought twice. That kind of power makes the voters irrelevant, and I'm thinking that's what happened to Crenshaw. Provided he was upstanding to begin with, which I do not know.

79 It's seems that Brandon's people are as senile as Brandon.

They unveiled a new Federal program where USPS will ship you four (free!) Covid test kits per month. The limit is one per street address.

Apparently Brandon's people forgot about the existence of apartment buildings.

But we also heard from tenants of other multi-unit buildings who've encountered difficulties. In some cases only one apartment could order, and in others, none could. Many of the challenges seem to boil down to how an address is formatted - whether the unit number is listed before or after the street address, or whether only one of the units has an official address, for example.

As "climate change" pushes states in the U.S. to dramatically cut their use of fossil fuels, many are coming to the conclusion that solar, wind and other renewable power sources might not be enough to keep the lights on.

Nuclear power is emerging as an answer to fill the gap as states transition away from coal, oil and natural gas to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stave off the worst effects of a warming planet. The renewed interest in nuclear comes as companies, including one started by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, are developing smaller, cheaper reactors that could supplement the power grid in communities across the U.S.

I am sure the popular support for risking nuclear conflict and getting troops killed to save the Ukraine is even lower than support for normalizing pedos. But I still don't really understand why the global junta which bases it's power on finances and legalism seems bent on pushing things toward a situation where the power rests with warlords. 149 Please. The UK has a smaller army now than it did in 1757. I'm sure Russia is terrified.

Last time I saw anything about it, the UK appeared to own under 200 tanka. And the RAF had about 100 warplanes. Most of the Cold War NATO armies were gutted after the Soviet Union imploded. Didn't seem to have much purpose and the pols wanted to reroute the money.

First few years of Viet Nam, the American people supported the War. Then it just got too long and too costly.

Just like the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, we all either supported them (initially) or at least remained silent, to support our troops.

War in Ukraine could silence a lot of anti Biden rhetoric, at least amongst the GOPe, in the short term.

152 Safe nuclear power, in whatever new forms of new fuel they can come up with, and safe use of old fuel .. would enable cheap energy, and the ability to make fresh water out of salt water in certain places ... it is at least a prime element of future energy. (which means better life for the masses)

BUT coal and oil can still be safe and primary for another 300 years, till all that is figured out. Energy is power, hence the DeepState and other Mafiosi intend to throttle us on the use of abundant coal and oil.

His point is that Covid is being treated by the CovidKarens and BranchCovidians as if it is Cooties. We construct this notion of cooties in childhood, and how to avoid and deal with cootie contamination. It's nonsense, not "data driven" of course.

In a mass formation hysteria, their reptile brains revert to the "Cootie physics".

There was no such thing as intercontinental bombers, misslles, atomic bombs, or the ability to do a hostile landing on the American continent. That tech came about quickly as a result of the war. You really would have had to have foresight to see that coming in 1940, when some reasonably decent countries still used biplane fighters. Now WW1 we had no business being in at all. There wasn't even an "evil" country in that one and none of them were a threat to the US.

I mean, I don't have anything against the Vietnamese, but we had problems at home. Now we have even bigger problems at home, myriad problems, because of the collectivist slime that have infested themselves like ticks to the body politic.

What we need is to call in some favors, and have about 500,000 Vietnamese shock troops to deploy here for a Pacification program, and root out the communist guerillas in our midst. Win some hearts and minds!!!

They'd give you 2 of each item you ordered, i.e. you'd get 16 tuna rolls instead of the usual 8. I'd go there once a week with my buddies and we'd each consume 60+ rolls plus 2 bowls of spicy miso soup...you can't leave sushi on the table was our reasoning and you can't save it for left overs. 32 rolls was nothing....but I don't think I could do it now...

I'll call some doubt in on your terminal velocity assumption? Re-entry from LEO, still means a 17,500mph (Mach 24) initial speed. Because, ORBIT. So, even accounting for the atmospheric drag & slowing, I think the spike will still be hurtling down at rate substantially faster than that of a .45 ACP fired at sea level.

Most everything I've read seems to show a +/- Mach 5 impact. Oh, and re-calc the weight of the rods for Tungsten, not ordinary steel. More data, they'd have aerodynamic, pointed nose-cones, and GPS guidance through a combo of ceramic, heat-resistant guidance fins for the atmosphere, and tail-mounted compressed gas "puffers" for the initial, above atmosphere initial descent.

We are all doing fine and dandy. We had one of the biggest winter storms we've had in quite a few years. My cousin, the retired meterological weatherman measured 7" of snow. He was gonna get back with the precise breakdowns, but hasn't yet. He's got some fancy instruments.
They were worried about freezing rain and ice build up, but we dodged that bullet here.
Things melted pretty good today, so we're coming out of it.

So, not exactly a nuke, but it would definitely fuck up your day.

334 >> Most everything I've read seems to show a +/- Mach 5 impact.

3000 m/s or just shy of Mach 9 possible, I've seen. These could be the mother of all bunker busters, too.

The system as conceived (and maybe along the way to implementation) would have two satellites. One (more) would be the magazine holder. The other satellite would be the control system.

When you want to fire one, the magazine drops it in order. Control satellite takes over and via control thrusters puts the rod an orbital trajectory that intersects with the target on the ground.

With enough magazine satellites in the proper orbits, you could hit a target anywhere on earth within 15 minutes of the fire order.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 18, 2022 11:13 PM (Mzdiz)

335 Not sure how the kinetic rods would ever be viable. The cost alone to get any usable number into orbit would be astronomical.

To be battlefield effective, you'd have to have bunches.

And I don't see how you control their accuracy entering the atmosphere.

Posted by: AlaBAMA

They weigh about 8 tons apiece. The StratoLauncher aircraft I posted a link to can carry a rocket up to 35K feet that has a 250 ton payload and the rocket blasts I to orbit from there. The artwork I've seen for the Rods has them stored in a revolver cylinder in bunches of 20. And I think you'd steat them the same way you do laser guided bombs, fins and lasing the target.

There's a story that has been going around forever in Lancaster, Ahia (home of Anchor-Hocking) that for an unusual weekend shut down on one of the glass lines, the Plant Manager, an accountant by training, ordered all equipment to be powered down, especially the glass furnaces as they burned a shit ton of natural gas. The glass guys were apocalyptic and protested for all the reasons we can well imagine but the PM wouldn't hear of it.

So down the furnace goes. Come Monday morning, the previously molten glass in the furnace had solidified to the point where it wasn't usable immediately. It took a couple of full days to reheat the glass and unf*ck the machinery that was rendered inoperable by oh so smart I'm gonna save a bundle in fuel costs Mr. PM.

423 Cresnhaw personifies the worst of the Aristocratic Naval Officer Syndrome/Annapolis Variant. They take being the White Gloved Highly Educated Socially Acceptable Rank & Social Climbing Ethos seriously!

An Admiral living on the Main Line in Philidelphia would hold a High Social Standing, and his adjunct Lieutenant or Lt. Commander would be a most sought after commodity in the mix. And an Annapolis single officer on the Main Line Dating Circuit? Those women would cut throats to be the belle of his (pair of) balls.

The Elitist Naval Officer is the kind that gives the warfighters the Mk.14 torpedo, and scoffs at the reports of failure from the field. CAN'T have failed, all the Best Men were in on it's design. Best. Men.

Sure, Army General Officers can suffer a similar syndrome. Many do. But they're pale imitations of the Real and Original Aristrocratic Officer Class. *sniff!*

Plus any rando with an orbital vehicle, and some strap-on retro rockets could knock the thing out of orbit and onto a target of his choice, and if you are not right there, there is fuck all you can do to stop him.

Actually, no. B-52, B-1, B-2 can all deliver H-Bombs, expending but a few thousands of pounds of JP-4 or whatever kerosene they burn these days. Far short of a "tit for tat" energy exchange.

The Rods from God would be delivering weight x velocity, in a far more compacted moment of time, than the weight x velocity required to deliver them aloft. And it is the SUDDEN delivery of that mass times velocity squared formula which results in the excess velocity being converted into explosive energy. The subtraction of the expended time to send aloft, vs. the instant ending of velocity on delivery, is the Delta.

It's very popular with kids and teens and has spawned a large number of imitators. You can recognize the style simply from the thumbnails. They all have a similarity you can pick out after seeing a few. Titles like "Teen bullies special needs kid, instantly regrets it".

From what I have seen of Dhar Mann videos, they are only slightly political or woke (no more than the general culture at least), but I'm not surprised to see an extremely politicized version of it being pushed out there.

That's because the energy of an A-bomb, or H-bomb, or even a hand grenade is stored in the makeup of the bomb itself. You could deliver them in a wagon drawn by spavined tortoises, and they'd still get the job done. If you get 99 Gigajoules out of a tungsten rod when it impacts, you had to expend at least 99 Gigajoules to get it into orbit. No less, and probably a lot more. TANSTAAFL.

She paid me to dog-sit over the summer and let me peruse her son's collection of comics and novels. It was my first introduction to the X-Men and Robert Heinlein. Starman Jones was the first book, and I've read everything I could get my hands on. Glory Road and Starship Troopers are tied for my second faves.

I was just reading up on the Rods from God concept. Energy yield is around 48GJ. That's just 11.5 tons of TNT.
TJ are where nukes are at.

So, the benefit of the RFGs is not their explosive potential, but their ability to hit heavily defended targets and/or deep bunkers.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 19, 2022 01:51 AM (Mzdiz)

516
Incidentally, the total energy output of the Saturn V getting standard payload into orbit is in the TJ as well. Total was over 10 TJ, and that's the total kinetic energy of the exhaust coming out rockets. Add the heat in as well, and you get about 5 kilotons of TNT total.

That's maybe a third of Hiroshima. So getting payload to orbit is on the order of (small) nukes.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 19, 2022 01:58 AM (Mzdiz)

517 That's maybe a third of Hiroshima. So getting payload to orbit is on the order of (small) nukes.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion

Escape velocity is 25,020 mph, which is Mach 32.8. The RfGs will come down at about Mach 10, so the energy just to get them into a stable orbit to drop from will be about 3X their hitting power.

As you say, they'll not really deliver a nuke kt hit (unless they are 100 feet long and 3 feet in diameter - that gets you into 1/3 Hiroshima range) but they'll deliver a very localized, deep blast that'll atomize your target.

I believe it is the joy they cannot fathom. That we know how all this ends, and we find joy in that, rather than worrying too damned much about things of this world. If we can show them that joy is not only available, but easy to come by, that might crack a few veneers.
