Wednesday Morning Guest Rant: The Press' Mental Slaves [Joe Mannix]

mannixape.jpeg

(Last week, people insisted that I needed an ape picture.
This one was recommended. What do you think?)

Friday saw the publication of an article in the Salt Lake Tribune, where the editorial board of the paper argued that the National Guard should be deployed to isolate and freeze out the dread unvaccinated. The general content of this article has already been examined, including by Ace on Monday and I will not rehash it here. These paragraphs, though, stood out to me for a different reason:

... Any move or recommendation to mask up or, when safe and effective vaccines became available, to make vaccination a requirement of admission to public places and society in general was shouted down as an unwarranted imposition on individual freedoms.

So now we are free all right. Free to fend for ourselves. To watch our children lose weeks, months or more of their precious educational opportunities. To wonder whether it is safe to go to work or to the store or to sporting events. To see businesses close for want of employees or lack of customers.

This is a fairly remarkable statement for how it reveals the mindset of the people who call for these policies. Opposition to mandates (not suggestions, as the article states, but mandates) because they curtail freedoms has only given us the freedom to be hurt and afraid and on our own.

The terror dripping out of that second paragraph is palpable. The editorial board is terrified of responsibility. They are afraid and don't know what to do and so, like the mental children they are, they demand that someone else make the choices for them. What is the source of those consequences they call out (correctly) as bad? It is the imposition of external, centralized rules that destroyed those businesses, closed those schools, instilled that fear. What do they want to do to fix those problems? Impose more external decision-making - and do so at the point of a gun.

They don't want - and are desperately afraid of - the responsibility of choosing and living. They don't want to live in a real world where one must choose, they want to be told what to do. They don't want to be independent, they want to be taken care of. This is the mindset of a slave. They are afraid of the responsibility of choice, both theirs and the choices of others. They are as terrified as they are cowardly and desperately want, more than anything else, to be absolved of the responsibility of individual liberty.

They want, in short, not to be men but to be robots - mindless automata who blindly follow the orders of their masters. They are not free men. They are not citizens, they are subjects. They are mental slaves of their own making, and are unworthy of any serious consideration or the trappings of a civilization they do not deserve and in which they cannot function.

28 Thanks Joe

I think this is a core theme of Progressivism. There is someone that know better or more than me or more importantly, my poorly inform idiot neighbor.

So to solve whatever the current issues is at hand we must have one TRUE source of fact that in turn allows a government official (usually unelected) to set in place and orderly set of rules and regulations.

Many times this orderly set of rules and regulations is used to protect an entrenched belief but may also be used protect a lobbyist paying merchant (see Walmart vs. Bettys Toy Shoppe) from and new or local business.

45 America used to foster 'rugged individualism', indeed the core difference between US and the Communists...and frankly most of Europe, is that we valued the individual over the State or the Collective.

No longer. That value has stopped being taught. The last two generations have been taught to socially conform, to beg for handouts. They've been conditioned to avoid hard work, suffering, sacrifice, self-denial, assertiveness.

I do think the American Experiment only works while you have Citizens. When we get to the point where we have serfs and Oligarchs...we're something else. And our system of government will change.

I just hope these evil fuckers don't survive the change.

46 Wife and I were talking last night about her best friend who has become a Covid-addicted fearmongrel.

This woman kept her daughter home from school the first week back from Christmas break because she didn't want her around any kids who may have been with extended family.

I told my wife not to even bother discussing it with her because there's no point, but then she said that as a friend, she just wanted to ask her why she's so afraid.

I changed my mind. If possible, we need to try to walk people back off of their ledges and back into the world. It most likely won't work but it's either try or watch the number of crazies continue to grow.

It's so much easier to be told what to do, where to go, how to behave, rather than evaluate the benefits and disadvantages of each and every choice in life.

Totenberg has been known for doing this sort of thing before. She was close friends with Ginsberg for example but never actually mentioned that in her writings about the court. My guess is that those complaints came directly from Sotomayor or were told to her law clerks who then relayed the comments to Totenberg.

Yet the CDC itself says that masks don't work. And resource after resource says the vaccines don't work, don't work for variants and are likely causing many health problems in people.

So if you intend to suspend logic and facts prior to screeching about how people should be sent to the gulag, then one must infer that what you really want is just people locked up who disagree with you on anything. Because no logic supports your point.

So this is wishcasting that tyranny be legal and we revert to the dark ages or Soviet gulags for dissent.

Nina Totenberg is an absolute hack, she's been around forever, on NPR and other places and always has been a leftist twist.

I heard an All Things Considered report recently and... its... awful. I mean, the content is leftist crap as always but instead of the quiet earnest breathy NPR voice it was this.. 95 To watch our children lose weeks, months or more of their precious educational opportunities. To wonder whether it is safe to go to work or to the store or to sporting events.

Yesterday, I commented that I like to see Joe Mannix's girls and that I sometimes envy them. Not because I want to be them, I like me, but, because I miss my mostly careful youth.
In my youth we never had to wear masks, be worried about our own mortality or losing friends and family to a pandemic, we weren't isolated and locked-down, we had freedom to be young and enjoy life without the weight of the world on our shoulders.

That is what I think will be most devastating to our children, the total loss of their innocence and being forced to become miniature adults in the blink of an eye.

Despite the topic's obvious relevance, most discussion of transhumanism remains on the fringe. When serious people do confront it in public, they tend to skirt the hard problems or simply mock the notion. Yet in these ten documents, published between 2019 and 2021, we see an open embrace of transhumanist ideas by military, government, and corporate analysts. . .

Yeah, that was a key "tell" for me. I'm not an epidemiologist, but then, neither are the people pulling all this shit out of their ass. I recall a pharmacist employee being quoted in our local newspaper. Not the owner, who runs it, a well respected long time compounding facility, just somebody we've never heard of, and, as far as I know, not licensed or a doctor.

"Sometimes, natural immunity is not the way to go."

Now that's true, as far as it goes. For example - Polio. I don't want to get Polio. But statements like this, are without context. Very misleading. And given the problems with the vaccine .. Then all the clowns that were claiming that threats of being fired from your job, if you don't take the jab, is not coercion to take an experimental medicine. Totes natural. You have a choice to get fired, so that makes it OK.

188 12 Just a reminder, Sodamayor voted for both vaccine mandates although she stays at home because her fully-jabbed colleagues don't wear masks.
_________

If masks actually worked, then Sotomayor would be protected from infection by the mask covering her own face. She wouldn't need to worry about whether or not anybody else was wearing one.

Of course, as the CDC has admitted, face masks provide "negligible" protection from the virus, so everybody in the room could be fully masked, and Sotomayor still wouldn't be protected.

So her refusal to participate in the courtroom due to lack of masks is silly and illogical, but that's pretty consistent with everything else this woman say or does, so why is anyone surprised?

Remember when Obama nominated her and said we need more than just reason and logic and intelligence (i.e. white people thinking) on the court, we also need passion and intuition and diverse lived experiences (i.e. brown/black people thinking) on the court!

Hence, the "wise latina." LOL. Be careful what you ask for . . . .

The same people don't understand why the direct election of Senators was a bad idea, and it's because they don't understand federal power and where it comes from. They're all centralists. Power resides with the Federal and is devolved to the States and then the Counties and so on down to the People.

It's exactly backwards from how the country was designed. The power resides with the People, then is devolved up to the State, then up to the Federal. There are explicit carve-outs for Federal powers, but otherwise it must be sourced from the States (the Senate) and the People (the House). Direct election of Senators left the States with a muted voice. The elimination of the Senate would leave the states with no voice at all.

232 220 It's exactly backwards from how the country was designed.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will attempt to track it down and give it a read.

Don't get me wrong, I'm generally not a negative individual, in fact my greatest joy is when I make someone else laugh and offer hospitality.

The disillusionment of the coming of Messiah to the world is that everyone though Christ would come in prominence and deliver the world from bondage. They thought He would claim the earthly mantle and put an end to the oppression. They thought he would defeat the Romans and hold a mantle of power and authority on earth.

Christ did those things, but He had no earthly majesty, He didn't smite the oppressors, He did not deliver an eternal utopia on earth. He paved the way that all the things, the bonds and chains placed on us in this world, would not be used to bind us for eternity. Christ did not promise that there would be no more suffering, He promised that eventually there would be an end to suffering for those that believe, contrary to the state of those that cling to the world, for which there will never be comfort and peace. As long as I have that hope, this world can not defeat me.

And this is why my county's new plastic bag tax drives me nuts...if we care about stopping viral spread, like hospitals, you want to use disposable stuff. Reusing anything just invites the growth of harmful bacteria and other gross stuff that can make you sick and shoot down your immune system, making you susceptible to more viruses/bacteria/fungi.

But no - we somehow decide to get rid of plastic straws and bags when they are at their highest use...sigh...

I don't completely agree. Obviously, the Senate is different than what the founders envisioned, but it is still a completely different body than the House. It does represent the constituents of each State to some extent more than the House. Its not perfect, but our federalist system is still a very unique form of governance and the brilliance of the founders to conjure up a system so unique still amazes me.

"On the ice" versus "off the ice." Part of it stems from the fact that you know your job as a lawyer is to represent your client, and it's rare that a client is completely right, so you can't hold it personally against the other lawyer that his client is an idiot. Yours might be too, and certainly next time you meet there's a good chance that it will be your client that's the idiot.

The terror dripping out of that second paragraph is palpable. The editorial board is terrified of responsibility. They are afraid and don't know what to do and so, like the mental children they are, they demand that someone else make the choices for them.

------

I think that's probably true of the drones who work for them, but the editorial boards of these papers are just pushing the command-and-control policies of the Party as far as they can. They're exploiting the fear of our dum-dum populace (and many of their dum-dum employees), but they don't share it.

He said that chimpanzees can't swim because their muscle density is so great that, in effect, they sink like rocks. He also said that if rats infest a habitat, which happens now and again, they just move the chimps into that habitat: problem solved.

421 Caesar that is the House you're thinking of - voting on the rule for a bill, before the bill itself (or amendments thereto).

Senate has no such rules for bills. Everything is done via unanimous consent (UC). On a big bill that typically gets lots of amendments and can take weeks to do, the leaders will work out a UC agreement covering time allotted, amendments allowed, etc. - which I guess amounts to a "rule", but there is no formal rule process.

Rules of the Senate govern different *types* of things and how they are handled - nominations, treaties, impeachment trials, etc.

Only a very few things have legislated procedure - like the Budget Act, and Reconciliation. The law sets limits on debate and germane amendments for these. But they are considered "privileged" because there is no need for UC - or cloture - to limit debate.

I'd never been in a mosh pit before; I was slamming guys left and right (football forearm shivers) trying to keep them off of this little coworker of mine. The floor was a river of beer and grime, and as we were leaving I noticed my white sneakers were completely black and trashed.

I walked her to her hotel room, and then I RAN back to mine -- only time I've been terrified in a city (especially since I didn't have my pistol). Good times, good times ..

The direct election of Senators was indeed a bad idea; even worse now is the fact that we do not, by and large, want limited government. If we went back to the way it used to be, Senators would be sent to DC by state governments with strict orders to bring home the bacon and plug holes in profligate state government's budgets.
