Is the Biden agenda Dead? Just ask West Virginia [TJM]

Note from Ace: TJM's post is actually a week or ten days old. But it has new relevance today!

Polls have come out from West Virginia about Joe Manchin's popularity since his effective murder of the Build Back Better Bill in the Senate.

Is the state that gave Trump a 40 point victory just over a year ago mad with their Democratic senator?

Why, no. No, they are not.

Senator Manchin's job approval has gone up seven points to 59 percent.

I have no idea what Schumer's strategy was going into this Congress. It was obvious that he never had the votes for major, nation changing legislation from the beginning of the Congress, even with the pair of wins in Georgia. Publicly and loudly pushing BBB as THE agenda item of Biden's first term, a bill that was all but guaranteed to fail, was a curious choice.

On the one hand, this could have been a huge ploy to help prop up Manchin in WV, ensuring his re-election in 2024. However, if that were the case, then Schumer is just angering the progressive base while painting Biden as an ineffective failure of a master negotiator who knew Congress so well he could work everything. This will probably lead to a massively funded progressive primary in WV that will sap tens of millions of dollars away from other races in a presidential election year.

The other big thing is that Manchin was obviously operating as the scapegoat for several other Democratic senators up for re-election in 2022 who are facing challenging races. Kelly in Arizona, Warnock in Georgia, Masto in Nevada, and Hassan in New Hampshire probably don't want votes on their records for a massively unpopular piece of legislation.

However, no matter the intention, this makes Schumer and Biden look foolish and ineffectual.

All they've managed to do is show that fighting the Biden agenda is popular.

Perhaps. You wouldn't know that if you watch Blue Hive News, though. The press is reporting on how awful Manchin and Sinema are, not about how popular Manchin is.

But I don't know about their sophistication or foolishness. Part of me thinks that they thought they would get everything they wanted and everyone would take one for the team. The same BS he always has used. Chuck Schumer has gotten virtually nothing done in office or in leadership but he always insanely overpromises and makes these huge, grandiose statements, bloated threats, and ridiculous speeches, while looking down his nose at everyone. Trump was removed. Every important policy (that had important real-world results) has been reversed/eliminated, formally, or informally (immigration law/border), aside from select tariff and trade moves. The latter likely to be hollowed out by exemptions and expirations, though remains to be seen.

Mission accomplished.

I doubt you could find 100 out of 100,000 Biden voters in November 2020 who could identify or explain a single part of the "Biden agenda".

What? Was it shutting down the oil industry? That's surely a hugely popular idea.

I don't think that will go anywhere, because if Manchin, Sinema, Kelly, Warnock, Hassan and Masto are all on the fence in various stages, there aren't enough open GOPes to get that stiff over the finish line in the Senate. 56 Schumer puts voting rights act up for cloture. All Ds vote for it but doesn't get past cloture. Easy vote.

Schumer then puts filibuster rule change. Those in tough races vote against. Not going to pass. Keeps "moderate" in race against possible red tide ( voting to end filibuster is assumed to be death sentence for the above listed Ds)

Progs aren't going to run against anyone. Though they'll be passed. Moderates re-elected. Good for 6 years.

Of course that's a bipartisan disaster always hanging over the country, has been *since the 1980s*, when it became literally the sole Dem economic agenda item that isn't just some kind of welfare (even though the pork and other things in it are very much welfare of various kinds, just the union, corporate, and state govt. variety).

What big legislation was passed during the misrule of the affirmative action intern? Right. Almost nothing. Yet somehow the degradation of the society and country roared right along. On the other hand, Trump had many important accomplishments (policies leading directly to improved realities) - none of which were based on legislation.

87 Democrats learned under Obama what the Republicans never have: eventually you'll get congress back. So just go for broke, see what you can get done, and if it doesn't work meh, try again later. If even part of it works *cough*INFRASTRUCTURE BILL*cough* then you've got a win that won't go away because congress is terrible at removing but great at adding. You lose, you're out for a few years then back in later.

Republicans run on doing nothing when in power and whining when out, thus accomplishing nothing except the occasional tax handout to their buddies. I'm all for tax cuts but really? That's all you can try?

- Many of the officials were reindicted on various charges for their role in the crisis
- But the racketeering charges filed against at least four officials were dropped

When McCain and Flake and McSally are what passes for the Right, then the State GOP is a hard-left org, not even the center-left outfit it is in most places.

167 132 Flint officials will not face racketeering charges over poison water crisis after Michigan AG disbanded prosecution team who had been building the case for three years

- Michigan state attorney general Dana Nessel disbanded the prosecution team
- The team had filed 15 charges against state officials over nearly three years
- Many of the officials were reindicted on various charges for their role in the crisis
- But the racketeering charges filed against at least four officials were dropped
- Financing for the bungled water supply switch is thought to be fraudulent
- It is believed over 100,000 Flint residents were affected by the water poisoning
- Around 20,000 children were affected, with many suffering major health issues
Posted by: SMOD at January 17, 2022 02:59 PM (RHGPo)

Makes sense. The only person who paid a political price for Flint was the Republican governor who had nothing to do with it in the first place. All the local Flint politicians were Democrats IIRC, so it was only a matter of waiting out the clock before charges were finally dropped against them. Mission accomplished.

Most of Europe is. Maybe all of it. I reject the notion of ideology passed down through DNA, but being against Jews has been such a major part of European culture for thousands of years I don't know if they can even change.

227 The biggest surprise to me after the failure of BBB and the pivot to "voting rights" is that there hasn't been a subsequent pivot. Not yet, anyway.

What the Complex wants is the destruction of everything most people value. They can't say that, though, so they have to come up with something to do. That was supposed to be fundamental reform into socialism (BBB: dead; federalized elections: dying), COVID victory (they're trying like the dickens, but it will likely be too little and too late even if it works), Afghanistan withdrawal (total debacle and humiliation), foreign policy (disastrous) and the economy (disastrous).

I don't know what they're going to try next given that this is an election year and last year was marked by continuous failure. They need an agenda and they need political capital and they need it *now*, but I don't think they know what to do to achieve that. That's going to make them desperate, and that worries me.

For Manchin, Gov of WV is a hell of lot better than being hated in the Senate by his caucus - and being in the minority to boot - which is coming. Joining the Republicans just alienates his organization in WV...he found out the hard way that being Senator of Coal State imparts no power in DC anymore.

254 Is the Biden agenda Dead?

The original agenda is kaput. It's too soon to tell if all of the pieces are dead. Can the Democrats initiate more budget reconciliation bills now that we're in 2022? Or have they used-up the number permitted in a two-year session of Congress? How many pieces of the original BBB and voting rights shams will Pelosi attach to so-called must-pass bills, such as Defense funding and a few others? I hope all remaining pieces of the Biden/Pelosi/Schumer leftist-plan crap is dead, but those bastards will not completely give up for a while yet, no matter how low Joe's approval numbers get.

The 2020 election was "fortified" because the ossified grifter class of the Dems needed to show a Big Win to fend off AOC and the Netroots. The convo led to rap and hip hop music (my sis-in-law was big into hip hop). She seemed shocked that we knew anything about 'black music' or anything related to rap or hip hop in general.

They do believe that white people don't know anything about black musicians or entertainers at all.

HOW will 700,000 DC taxpaying citizens be disenfranchised is the John Lewes Act is not passed? How will ANY voters in any state be disenfranchised?

WHY is a Federal Law needed to protect "who counts the votes," or "democracy" will end tomorrow in the US?

And why don't the Dems and Media ever say that the proposed bill will prohibit voter ID requirements nationwide?

Details, details, details. The Dems never want to publicly discuss or debate details, on anything,

397 Do not trust Manchin or Sinema. Hell, I don't trust any congress critter. They're all slime unless they commit to serve 2 terms and retire. They also need to have worked for a living, a paying job before they enter politics. Being a suck up congress critter is not a career.

Posted by: Mister Scott (formerly GWS) at January 17, 2022 03:28 PM (bVYXr)

Would anyone have sanely bet otherwise? I think the issue is less Manchin and Sinema, and more the far Lefties. In olden times, well first it never would have happened. The Senate and House Leaders would never have put their swing votes in a position of having to vote for nuking the swing votes constituencies, ie coal. They would have put in exemptions or something to protect Manchin. Instead, if the give Manchin what he wants, the FAR LEFT bolts. What is really amazing is the Dems inability to woo GOPe squishes. It just goes to show that the committee process has collapsed on the Hill. That's where you always grabbed a few opposition votes.

Long winded way of saying the Dems are divided and seem unable to even begin a legitimate negotiation.

408 Regardless, white and black cultures in the US are really separated from each other. It's worse in the church.

Seeing as what day it is, its worth revisiting history and seeing how MLK jr among others managed to bring the two communities together very well and that dividing line was melting away.

Then he was killed and the following "leaders" worked as hard as they can to split us up again. Every time that happens: the cultures are beginning to blend and join, someone works as hard as they can to split us up.

And strangely, none of ones doing so are white supremacists or Klan types.

While I never thought they would cave on BBB, that might have been the smart way to bet. They are both Democrat partisans and if they thought for a moment their 2024 re-election prospects would not take fatal hits from the vote, they would have caved. Obviously, internal polling is very bad for 2022 and maybe even 2024 looks bad to Democrats.
