She Got This Cafe

LovelyAlkmaarNetherlands.jpg
Lovely Alkmaar, Netherlands by
Johnblute Photography

Giving a stray a doggie chew-toy. He's super-happy!

Doggy gets into the wrong dog-bed, gives no arfs.

Snow is cold.

Strange brood.

Baywatch but with dogs.

Leftover from Christmas: Little dog with a little Christmas tree.

Animals are often obsessed with computers. This bird might be the worst on that score.

Little spudmuffins.

Guy gets out his raft and rescues cats stranded by very high-water flood.

Inman: Guy gets his truck hung up on a parking lot barrier. I don't even know how he did that. Then stuff happens.

If you're having trouble seeing what happened: the jolt set off his airbag, which then decked him right in his f***ing face.

Searching for videos of Jingxi -- where that Covid Shaming Parade took place -- disclosed this neat vista of a mountainside village.

Shame China is a totalitarian communist shithole country.

And now: She Got This.

Spoiler: She Don't Got This.

10 Half of Fort Worth is ahead of us here - many of these pets are NOT happy.

This isn't how we planned to spend our first hours home after Christmas vacation, but we knew this time was coming. Bandit is 13+ years old; most Great Pyrenees don't live past 10-11 years.

Don't know yet if this is the end, but trying to be realistic.

Yeah, so I've been doing a deep dive on China for new new book (tentatively titled "Something Something Dragon: A military study of China") and I'm starting to get into a weird form of burnout.

Last night I took a break and went over to Gunbroker to see how certain benchmark items were doing (I like to keep tabs on the market) and every time I closed my eyes there was a parade of Chinese ritual priests walking by. Confucian-style procession.

I opened them abruptly and quickly closed the browser, because I really don't want to end up bidding on a $3,000 Steyr Hahn because "Confucius said so."

Alternative explanation: the masks are coming off.

Getting rid of standardized testing means no more admissions scandals, because connections, not test scores or grades, will be all that matters.

Freeing gang members makes no sense unless the politicians are in fact working with the gangs. Which they are.

131 Have you ever gone to the grocery store and found yourself on the same shopping timing with another really annoying shopper? Like one that lingers in your way or parks their cart blocking the flow of traffic. Like a person that puts way too much thought into picking their flavor of Pop-Tarts.

So you grab something off the shelf and try to hustle to the next aisle, hoping to distance yourself, but then they show up there, too. Constantly in your way.

And then it's like you have this sort of awkward shopping relationship, where they are kind of your shopping nemesis. And it's like a battle of shopping wills for dominance.

And then eventually, you're like f*ck it, and go back to the produce aisle at the beginning of the store just to distance yourself from them. And then when you finally think all is clear, and you can resume your shopping flow in peace, you wind up behind them in the checkout line and you secretly wish they would die.

Has that ever happened to you?

They didn't "lose" per se. Being a Catholic Crusading order, they are forbidden to wage war on fellow Christians. When the French rolled in, they (mistakenly, as it turned out) thought they were still Catholic. So they offered no resistance.

BTW, the same rules were observed in Spain. The Carlist militia generally didn't take prisoners from the International Brigades (because they were Communists), but an American they captured happened to have a St. Christopher medal, so he was spared. It's in my other book.

186 Since so many of y'all have praised Nurse's taste, I sent her a fancier rosary than I usually make, to get her opinion. Dark amethyst beads with gold wire, chain, Pater Noster beads, crucifix and center. Since she said she likes simple, I was a bit apprehensive about her reaction.

Well, she liked it! ::happy Snoopy dance::

So dark beads with gold highlights is now added to my repertoire, for anyone interested.

197 I'm glad to hear that others have experienced this.

Another irritant to me is when you make a triage decision while shopping and then somebody screws it all up.

Like if I'm trying to select an item that will require some consideration and then a fellow shopper kind of darts in to that area, I will generally back away thinking they must know what they want, so I'll defer, allow them to grab what they need and then move on.

And instead they start comparison shopping. And so then I'm irritated because I'm thinking, I deferred to you to grab what the hell you needed, but you didn't even know what you needed, so you were just jamming your way into my space.

You can go to hell lady. And by the way, you shouldn't wear yoga pants, you can't pull that look off.

Grandbaby was born on the 12th - we folded like a cheap suit and got the J&J booster. Don't know when we will be able to see him, though - Truckee got hit with over 6 feet of snow, and the Reno airport was shut down for a day or two.

We've never driven in snow, much less mountainous snow, so it may be a while before we are able to visit.

I have a land line still and my theory was that if the power goes off I could still make calls with the Black Beauty since it was powered off the phone system's house battery. 273 My hometown adopted, so to speak, a family of Vietnamese boat people in the '70s. The kids were toddlers. They quickly settled in and bought the closed Chinese restaurant and did great business, gradually adopting the Vietnamese cuisine. Kids grew big and strong due to the high protein American diet, and were very popular in school. Son played football and was nearly a foot taller than his dad. Great family. So much for the rednecks be racist screed.

275 that was a great story about Tippi Heddron and the Vietnamese nail industry. Never would have guessed anything close to that!

I remember some comedienne used to have a bit where she would tell about going to the nail shop. So she asked her manicurist " what was she saying about me???" and her manicurist said "Oh she say you very nice."

My wife had a relative that was in this vitamin club/company. It was a stupid pyramid scheme, the amway of vitamins. I tried to talk her out of it but she ended buying a mess of vitamins from this person because family. And she decided to take a big bag assortment with her on our trip to Europe. We changed carriers in London to Scotland, to air France who wanted to charge something like $150 for an extra bag so she stuffed the bag with vitamins in my bag and on we went. Until I got pulled out at security, taken to a room, swabbed and examined, in various places, questioned in bad English about drug trafficking then let go. Also I had the flu and was sick as a dog the whole ordeal. They were gloved up pretty well though. Being sick and mostly out of it probably helped. But they should at least bought me a drink first. I would have preferred the Cosby method.

My Dad got a hold of a rotary wall phone (back in the 1960's ) and installed it in the basement, but disconnected the ringer. His theory was that The Phone Company (TPC, see The President's Analyst) could tell if you had a phone attached to the line by the current draw from the ringer.

Joan Baez, one of those "lefties" was very sympathetic to the boat people and campaigned to help them.
Jane Fonda, another one of those "lefties" harshly criticized her for helping people escape the new communist paradise of Viet Nam.
Jane is a stone-cold bitch, and I really hope she dies an unpleasant death.
Joan Baez and her group visited N. Viet Nam during the war and talked to American POW's while there, and then were willingly debriefed by the US military and told them everything they learned about the men they met.
The US military was grateful for the information and cooperation.

396 131 bitter clinger: if you want true shopping nirvana, try shopping where our Spanish speaking friends shop. Grocery shopping for them is a family sport, so you've got up to ten or more people grouped around one cart. They stop, someone picks up a can or a box, and everyone gets to touch said item and voice their opinion. Finally the item is either tossed into the cart or returned to the shelf. Then it's on to the next item. You can't get past them and reversing to go to another aisle isn't worth it because another family or two is doing the same thing. So. Much. Fun.

449 My Dad got a hold of a rotary wall phone (back in the 1960's ) and installed it in the basement, but disconnected the ringer. His theory was that The Phone Company (TPC, see The President's Analyst) could tell if you had a phone attached to the line by the current draw from the ringer.

It was a BIG DEAL about 50 years ago when The Bell System/Western Electric went to the 4-wire quick disconnect modular wall and phone plugs. Before then, an installer from the local Bell Company came out to your place with the phone you ordered from your local Bell Company and spliced its wires to the wall cable's wires. The Bell System was perhaps the best example ever of a vertical organization corporation and its products.

I cannot recall if Bell/Western Electric voluntarily went to modular plugs or were forced to by court orders out of FedGov monopoly litigation.

Yo! I got an MCSA back in 2000-ish. IIRC the practice tests do a pretty good job of replicating the real tests. The questions can be tricky, but they're not trying to trick you - just trying to find out if you really know the subject. If you do know the subject you should not have any problem at all - just be careful to read the questions thoroughly, it's the details that can catch you. God bless you on these tests.

So does this mean that I can come to you with all of my Azure questions?

Oh, and have you used Microsoft's Virtual Labs? Those can be really helpful getting guided hands-on experience.

Dad was a manger at a baby Bell and we had seven extension and two lines. We got all the cool stuff years before it was available for most. We had a punch card phone that used hard plastic cards. They were about the size of a credit card and you punch out a hole for each number. There was a grid numbering system on the card.

You would insert the card in the top of the phone and it dialed the number. This worked great until, someone who will remain nameless, just punched out random numbers and called Tokyo. Phone was gone shortly after the bill arrived.

You can still get digital phones. My dad has one. He hates cell phones.

The Princess also had a lighted dial, early models requiring the plug-in transformer as well. Later models used LEDs that could easily be powered by the line.

The Trimline was the one with the small dial in the handset with the movable stop.

If anyone is interested in this, you can get restored versions of these from many places.

519 Party line in 1955. I still remember that first phone number we had, but if I wanted to talk to Granny Eromero I had to walk a mile across a cotton field, I was 6 and my bulldog would walk with me, when we got to Granny's I went in the smokehouse and cut off a piece of ham for me and the dog. Granny Eromero would put me in a 39 Chevy and drive me back home. She made the dog walk.

You would insert the card in the top of the phone and it dialed the number. This worked great until, someone who will remain nameless, just punched out random numbers and called Tokyo. Phone was gone shortly after the bill arrived.

And if you lived overseas, calls home were a once a quarter thing. We did stuff like write letters on those "Avion" papers with the plane on them to make sure the local post office put them in the overseas bin. Six weeks between sending and receiving, if you were lucky.

While "Sarah" of Hooterville and Andy Griffith fame was a humorous exaggeration, it was based on some truth.

The phone company preferred an old maid, living with her folks in town to be the small exchange operator. They were the most reliable. Ma and Pa could keep Sarah up and fed and allow her to be on-call just about all the time.

Nature would call, and Sarah would have to sleep of course, but Sarah could be there all the time. If there was an emergency, they'd just ring long and loud and wake Sarah up.

Sometime Sarah's mother would have to try work the switchboard, with hilarious results.
