The Dog Ranger!

Find someone who makes you feel like this stolen nacho makes this dog feel.

Dogs have great hearing, especially when it's food they're hearing.

Puppy and deer, playing.

Body-smuggling.

Dog takes his job as lifeguard too seriously.

What this bird lacks in size, he makes up for in moxie. Which he stores in his gigantic bird-balls.

Cha-cha for chow.

Having kittens.

Elephants reunite with their caretaker after a fourteen month separation.

Willowed, because I'm still ticked off

We went grocery shopping today. Got behind someone in the checkout line who just had to have a prolonged argument about whether they were entitled to 50 cents off a 12-pack of soda.

I always seem to run into people whose circle of awareness ends with themselves. The checkout arguer. The counter scratch off person. The halfwit who starts thinking about what they want when they get to the front of the line. The idiot who leaves his car at the gas pump while taking a leisurely stroll through the store. 59 Just took a Christmas Lights drive around the more upscale streets here in Galveston. Areas that last year, were pretty much Candy Cane Lane, are now near-ghettos of lightless squalor and dark.

Call it a 60%~70% reduction in the amount of lighted and decorated homes. Like it or not, Jimmuh Caddah did use the correct word to describe this: "Malaise". Poor Jimmuh didn't grok though, that he was the cause of that spiritual fog. Just as now, is President Poopy Pants. Galloping inflation, economic recession, 1970s stagflation, all hit within a matter of months, does not a joyous season make.

Unless they're Horde, and we do know how to have our Joy, regardless of the 'tards in D.C. They can turn the valve off on our oil, but they can't steal our JOY!

--------------

A "counter scratch off person" is to thank for me having conservative political views. Early 1990's, college student on a trip to visit friends. I stopped at a small mini-mart near the Ohio state line to put gas and a quart or two of oil in my '78 Pinto (awesome car). When I went in to pay, there was a guy in front of me buying scratch-off tickets, DOZENS of them, and scratching them right there on the spot. When he was done with that, he bought, literally, about $200 in lottery drawing tickets. To pay for them, he pulled a fat roll of 20's out of his pocket and peeled off ten or fifteen of them. He also had a gallon of milk and a small amount of groceries. So, he reached in his other pocket...and pulled out a fat roll of food stamps and started peeling them off.

It was at that point I realized that something in this country was all fucked up.

I see murders of Crows do that all the time. Not a Bald Eagle per se. I don't think I've ever seen one outside of captivity. But, yeah, Crows have a healthy hate of hawks. About the same as Blue Jays to Crows.

But the Mockingbird will harass all by its lonesome for however long it takes to move the bigger bird. Fearless little things.

102 We had friends over earlier and grilled out. For desert we made up a drink using some Evan Williams egg nog (really good stuff btw, and the best of the three pre-made brands we sampled).

Vanilla ice cream
Evan Williams to just cover the ice cream
Whip cream from a pressurized can
Christmas sprinkles

It was fantastic. You need to start out with a spoon because of the ice cream and whipped cream, but you can drink it soon enough. Highly recommended.

I named it "The Christmas Special."

He was out at two in the morning and came across something that ran in the drain to hide. It might have been a frog because he didn't act like it was anything he'd seen that close. Every time I let him out after that, he'd have to run over and check that down spout.

I got over fifty responses by folks with dogs that did exactly the same. Field springers never forget where they saw something interesting.

I peeked at the dog food aisle, it did seem a bit lean on canned food, plenty of dry AFAICT, and there were generally a few empty shelves, I don't know if they just can't get enough workers to keep up stocking in the rush season or couldn't get some usual items.

Friends of mine were fishing off their property when suddenly a big rockfish hit the water with a mighty splash. The rockfish was just getting his bearings when a huge bald eagle swooped down and picked it up and flew towards it's nesting area.
The belief is that the eagle had scored a rockfish dinner earlier but it wiggled loose in transit and fell back into the water.
A magnificent display of nature in action and I was not there to see it, but thought I would relay the story!

When I was Christmas shopping I saw the stores were pretty barren. Not from everybody buying up what they had. No, the clothing displays and the shelves have all been spaced really wide apart. Large open spaces in most stores. Most of the stores have been rearranged to hold a quarter of the merchandise they normally would. They look strange like you look at it and think; why would anyone design this huge retail place to hold this much merchandise? They're looking at maybe the worst time commercially for companies in a generation. A bunch will be completely gone in a few years. 179 One of the neat experiences in remote desert southwest, get up in one of those slickrock soaring red wall canyons and hear complete silence. Then the strange sizzling noise as a Raven (like a big crow) swoops by on the thermals checking you out. Then the gutteral "Grawk" echoes and bounces off the canyon walls. Watch them fly leisurely and unconcerned, they own this place.

Then you wonder, maybe that's the very same bird we saw here 15 years ago, it's possible - they live 20 to 30 years in the wild.

I used drill cuttings, which are mostly ground shale, which is, wait for it, clay. I was on many wells where the drilling mud was oil-based, so I had to wash my cuttings samples with two changes of solvent, and then vacuum dry. My excess washed and dried cuttings went into a suitable empty container, as did the spent solvent. I took both home with me. The dry cuttings made awesome floor-dry, and the spent solvent, after the fines settled out, was coffee-colored, and worked just fine in my varsol tank. Now that I am retired, my supply has dried up. Still have a year or two worth of each on hand, though.

IIRC, the Great Horned Owl and a few other owl species, have feathers optimized, so as the bird glides, they're absolutely silent as the slice through the air. Bad juju for many a wee critter or crow. And that Heart Faced Owl? His dished-out face is an acoustic lens, and can hear and precisely locate a mouse's heartbeat, even if it's under eight inches of snow. Mr. Owl will land *right THERE* with it's talons piercing the snow.. and the mouse. Y'all be happy that owls don't get larger than the Great Horned. B-2 Stealth Killers of the bird world.

Also, since Christmas is a wash for me this year, I made a "Song of the Vikings" channel on Pandora. There's something happy-making about guys chanting, grunting, and whispering menacingly to steady beats and occasional wind instruments. Or maybe it's because I'm an 'ette.

Possibly. They play a little game in the sky, where they dive bomb, do a little wing tumble that takes them in a 360 roll. Apparently it serves absolutely no biological purpose... other than they seem to have shedloads of fun doing it.

No other birds do it, and it's not the only behavior they engage in just for fun. They play tag with each other, using something like a fish in one claw, then will switch claws when another bird approaches to take it from them.

There was a fantastic ad campaign in the late 80s. I feel like it was for booze but I'm not sure. It would have a picture of like nine or sixteen salt and pepper shakers in a grid starting with the standard ones and then moving through the years at all the "fancy" changes, then the last one would be the original one. Tagline: "You Always Come Back to the Basics".

You can argue it wasn't a great campaign because I dont remember what it was for, but it's been 30 years and I'm not as good as I once was.

Ravens have such a broad repertory of calls, and the ability to mimic, that I don't think it's out of the question at all to think that they have the rudiments of language. I am willing to bet, that if you really worked at it, and developed a good rapport with ravens, that you could get them to find lost hikers in the woods.

**

I've mentioned it before, but if you've got a $1 slow shipping credit from Amazon, go right now and buy the Ambassadors of Harmony's version of Do You Hear What I Hear from the Holiday's in Gold album.

It's one of the most amazing versions I've ever heard. A 100 voice acapella men's chorus, and it starts out with one voice, then a duet, then a trio as appropriate in the song, and then the entire chorus sings out powerfully for the "Said the king to the people everywhere" verse. It's absolutely incredible. The rest of the album is just okay, but that one song is fantastic.

Feliz Navidad is seriously overplayed. I would rather hear a genuine Mexican or other Latin American Christmas song. Springsteen seriously annoyed me with his Obummer ass-kissing earlier this year, so his songs are off the list.

St. Louis radio legend Frank O. Pinion has this bit he does with the Peggy Lee version of "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree."

After listening to Frank talk about it, I defy anyone to hear the line about pumpkin pie as anything other than "f*ckin' pie."

321 279 OTOH Carrie Underwood's Do You Hear What I Hear is wonderful.

339 179 One of the neat experiences in remote desert southwest, get up in one of those slickrock soaring red wall canyons and hear complete silence. Then the strange sizzling noise as a Raven (like a big crow) swoops by on the thermals checking you out. Then the gutteral "Grawk" echoes and bounces off the canyon walls. Watch them fly leisurely and unconcerned, they own this place.

I've heard that! We were hiking down a side canyon off Supai, a narrow canyon about 100 yards wide, completely silent as only those desert canyons can be. And then we heard this "whoosh, whoosh" coming towards us, heard it long before we saw it. It was a raven, flying down the middle of the canyon at about 30' up, beautiful to see. Those western ravens are big! We all thought he had about a 6' wingspan.

The thing is the hawks climb like the crows do, but can dive much faster. I watched one spiral up for height, being bombed by the crows the entire time, then dive down to lose the crows. The crows gave up then.

I watched a crow play with a leaf in the wind once, catching and releasing it and chasing it again.

I saw a golden eagle on a pole at the top of our backyard. He looked as big as a cat. I ran to get my camera, and got back just in time to see him swoop down and snatch a rabbit halfway down the hill.
He had to flap a lot to get aloft again.

Ask me about the red fox in the yard.

About 5-6 years ago, my group at work was looking into options for a group outing for company-sponsored volunteer work (where we can get paid time off to participate in any number of volunteer activities). We found one which was for helping build a home in a neighborhood around downtown Detroit. I looked up the crime statistics for the area and they were extremely high. So our manager e-mailed the volunteer leader to ask about safety precautions for the activity.

The volunteer leader (who is black) replied back stating that of course the area was safe and it was people like us who spread information about crime that is what causes people to worry about crime. Not the crime itself, mind you. No, it was our fault for looking up the stats and politely asking if we needed to take any precautions.

After that reply, I have never donated my time (or money) to a company-sponsored volunteer project again (nor did I donate my time to that project).

431 Speaking of poultry and eggs. I was watching this series on history's worst jobs. This was during the period of the Roman occupation of the British isles and sometime shortly after. The narrator, Tony Robinson showed a lot of bad jobs but the worst in his opinion was the guy that had to repel off the edge of cliffs in ropes made from seal skin to grab eggs out of nests built in crevices of the shear wall. They were a major part of the diet.

And then Tony laid this bit of info down on us, they also had a lot of chickens. ?? So the Saxons had chickens alright, but they considered them sacred, so they wouldn't eat the eggs.

Sure pal. Sure. This is the sort of catchy history thing that probably keeps the ladies at the pub interested in your work long enough for everyone to get inebriated. I mean, draw the story out, as the drinks come, shortly after midnight hit them with the sacred chicken part and you're in like flynn.

But I have my doubts.

432 My current explanation for family and friends who can't understand why I don't want the booster, is that many of them are made in China. I refuse to get a booster made in China. Chinese quality assurance being what it is (none) I have a 20% chance of an ineffective dose, a 10% chance of getting a dose so low it's a placebo, a 10% chance of getting an overdose which will probably give me the virus straight up, and a 5% chance of typhus or hepatitis from an unsanitary needle. American-made booster or no booster. So far none of them have challenged me on it.

452 In light of megthered's suddenly having to deal with family & the fight against covid, might I gently remind y'all once again?

Stock up on the HCQ, Ivermectin, and if you can get 'em, Zpak antibiotics. Over the counter stuff like all the vitamins and minerals should be no-brainers. Get 'em!

Have all this loaded up in something like a sealed .30 cal ammo can, ready to deploy as needed. And don't skimp on the quantities if you can acquire in bulk. You might be saving your household, you might be saving a neighbor. Even with the weak-ass Moronic strain, there's likely to be those more sensitive to the 'vid, and less able to fight it off on their own. And yes, the goal is to keep folks out of the hospitals death camps, as those tend to stick to CDC guidance, which is about as bass ackwards as can be.

Again, prayers up, meg & Fen!

Although the church members have been allowed to be unmasked for a couple of months now, everyone involved in the service including the two kids who light the candles wore masks. It was a freak show. In my church, on the other hand, we've been back to normal since last spring. The funny thing is, my church went to a live streaming service during the COVID for a few months and kept it up after we went back in person -- we're now getting people from all over the country watching the live stream.

Marblehead, Massachusetts has had three US Navy ships named after it. The most recent was an Omaha-class light cruiser. This USS Marblehead started the war in the Phillipines, was heavily damaged during battle with the IJN, and returned to New York for repairs by sailing west. After repairs, she served the rest of the war in the Atlantic. She was scrapped in 1946.

But when is 10 items not ten items? If I have 9 separate items, and then 5 cans of store brand 'mater soup, do I have 10 items, or 14, given that the additional time to ring in X instances of the same item is less?

For my money, between 10 and 20 items is OK, as long as there are one or more cases of multiple instances of the exact same item. If you have 20 or more items, and no two are the same, then you are being a dick.

576 98 No One of Consequence: "A couple weeks ago, I saw crows taking on a bald eagle."

I see murders of Crows do that all the time. Not a Bald Eagle per se. I don't think I've ever seen one outside of captivity. But, yeah, Crows have a healthy hate of hawks. About the same as Blue Jays to Crows.
-----
From the Internet:
A flock of carrion crows is known as a murder of crows.
Two crows on a wire = attempted murder of crows.

It's only a murder of crows if there's probable caws.
