Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Christmas Ornaments II: The Deckoning [moviegique]It's Christmastime again, which of course means It's A Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and the Grinch, Die Hard and all the Shane Black movies, but last year I compiled a list of Christmas-themed filmed entertainment that were lesser known or at least lesser exposed. That list is here, and included: The Shop Around The Corner, Holiday Inn, The Bishop's Wife, The Holly and the Ivy, White Christmas, the MST3K episode "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians", the Rifftrax Live! episode "Santa Claus", "The Tick Loves Santa", Joyeux Noel, In Bruges, Rare Exports and Krampus. A little something for everyone in that list. But can I come up with another quality list this year? I think I can, especially after stealing all your ideas from the last movie thread. Before getting to the lesser known items, I wanted to take a little time to re-appreciate some of the classics which grinchier hearts in the past may have dismissed: A Miracle On 34th Street (1947, Comedy, Drama): It's easy to misremember this as treacly plum pudding, but its every major plot point and the behavior of most of its characters is shockingly cynical. The underlying premise is that due to the self-serving interests of everyone involved, a crazy man is going to be authenticated as Santa Claus. Elf (2003, Comedy): Yeah, I know, and I agree. The man-child schtick gets old fast and Will Ferrell is the King-Prince of Man-Children but under the sure hand of Jon Favreau and a relentlessly good-hearted core—well, if you're ever gonna like anything Will Ferrell, this is probably it. Terrific holiday soundtrack. Pre-saturation Deschanel. Christmas in Connecticut (1945, Romantic Comedy): Some of us like our Christmas movies to start with U-boat attacks, is all I'm saying. Peak Barbara Stanwyck with great support from Sydney Greenstreet and S.K. Sazall in this screwball comedy that would form the basis of about 9,000 sitcom plots in the TV age. Remade in 1992 by director Arnold Schwarzenegger and starring Dyan Cannon, Kris Kristofferson and Tony Curtis. ISYN.![]() "Hello, yes, I'll be needing a shed. No, not too comfortable." The Three Godfathers (1936/1948, Western): This came up a lot in last year's thread. There are half-a-dozen versions of this tale (including 2003's Tokyo Godfathers) about three desperados who find themselves in charge of a baby on Christmas, basically having to decide how bad of a badman each wants to be. The 1936 Boleslawski version features Chester Morris, Lewis Stone and Walter Brennan, and is largely superior to the version that John Ford made in 1948 to honor Harey Carey, which boasts John Wayne, Pedro Armendariz, Harey Carey, Jr. and Ward Bond, but lacks the edge of the earlier film perhaps due to Wayne not being convincingly "bad" enough to provide the tension. La grande illusion (1937, War, France): It's just not Christmas for me without a WWI story, and this (the greatest of Jean Renoir films) is the story of French soldiers escaping from a German POW camp. A big Christmas party is involved. The title is a wry reference to a 1909 book The Great Illusion, which argued that war made no economic or social sense, and which was used by the experts to "prove" that there would be no World War I. The author then won a Nobel Peace Prize for his book...in 1933. Remember The Night (1940, Romantic Comedy): Before Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray teamed up for murder and love in Double Indemnity they teamed up for laughs and love in this Preston Sturges penned offering from Mitchell Leisen, director of "the dregs of 1939" classic Midnight, the most excellent 1924 Thief of Baghdad, and that episode of "The Twilight Zone" where Roddy MacDowell crashes on Mars. Susan Slept Here (1954, Comedy): In Who The Devil Made It, Peter Bogdanovich interviews the great Hollywood directors and also Frank Tashlin, a brilliant cartoon director who moved on to live features like Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? and The Girl Can't Help It, and this. As a premise, "35-year old screenwriter takes in a 17-year-old runaway in the days leading up to Christmas" is a sketchy one, but the movie has some charm if you can get past the fact that 22-year-old Debbie Reynolds plays 17 way more convincingly than 50-year-old Dick Powell plays a 35 year-old for whom the 24-year-old Anne Francis is aging out. Actually, Reynolds is so good...I don't know, maybe fast-forward past the Powell parts.![]() Old maid Anne Francis (shown here with AARP spokesman Powell) was only two years away from playing jail bait herself in 1956's "Forbidden Planet". ![]() All the kids from the movie would come back for the show, but none of the adults would except "Esther". ![]() Last year's auction included the classic Vincent Price Shrunken Head Apple Sculpture Kit, which doubtless appeared on many a nearly-29-year-old's list to Santa. I like Elf. I understand the loathing many have for Will Farrell. But he was perfect in that role. Elf and A Christmas Story are our go-to Christmas movies. We still play Christmas Vacation, but we're pretty much just laughing and joking by the time we get to that one. I do pay a lot of attention to Beverly Di'Angelo, though.

You're right that the 1936 "Three Godfathers" is far superior to the later John Wayne version. In the earlier version, all three sacrifice their lives to save the infant, and by doing this they earn some kind of redemption for their previous, terrible crimes. But John Wayne was too big a star to allow him to die, so they changed the script to reflect that (and threw away a lot of its depth in the process)

You could reduce IAWL to the concept that George's vision for his life (not his purpose, but his vision) is completely opposed to Mary's, but Mary wins and George therefore ends up believing he is a failure. It is only the miraculous vision given by Clarence that allows him to see that just because his life was different than he imagined it doesn't make him a failure.
The drama comes from the tension, not from the essentially good times around the most dramatic moments. Remember, up until Potter steals the money, George is doing pretty well. George's real issue is that he thinks he has to solve everyone else's problems and he therefore can't accept help from others. Here's a couple of underseen movies that occur at Christmas but aren't really "Christmas movies:
1) "Inside" - insanely violent, insanely great French thriller/horror movie wherein a widow who's pregnant with her dead husband's baby is attacked by a crazy woman who wants...her baby! Don't let the gore scare you away this is a seriously great thriller/horror movie. Once it gets going it doesn't let up. 2) The Day of the Beast - oddball, black Spanish comedy wherein an ineffectual priest must try and stop the Anti-Christ from being born on Christmas Eve. But prints had been sent to London and LA, so he failed. Why did he hate it? Because not only is one of the key characters a Jew, but he is a brave fighting man with a great deal of honor, just like the other French prisoners, and that enraged Hitler. With Lena Wertmuller's death, I rewatched her best movie "Seven Beauties".
She was a 70s style, Italian socialist but this is a brilliant black comedy involving an Italian neerdowell who blunders until he winds up in a German death camp. He is willing to do anything to live, including attempting to seduce the piggish Nazi woman who runs the camp. The movie begins with what you might call a 70's leftist Sermon on the Mount and gets better and better from there. Mainly, because this Wertmuller movie has minimal socialist drivel and is mostly about personal responsibility for your life and how you live. saw A Holiday Affair" on tCM with Robert MItchum and Janet Leigh. Made in 1949 and quite good. Christmas is somewhat incidental to the plot, which centers around a WW2 widow and her young son. She's got a job as a comparison shopper and a beau, until Mitchum comes into her life.
Interesting how frankly it referred to her extended mourning and reluctance to move on. She was incredibly appealing, Mitchum is very likeable and the young boy actor was remarkable. plus set in NYC in 1949. Posted by: vivi at December 18, 2021 08:53 PM (USW1s) 229

Effectively that is what happens. If a jabbed woman can miraculously carry the child to term, then the survivor gets jabbed three times, the infant will likely vapor lock from the toxin. Please to advise. Posted by: ZOD Reading the 9 book series that just ended with the last novel dropping two weeks ago, or watching the 6 season series? The books are magnificent though the final one was a bit of a let down, but I suppose I should have expected that as much as I enjoyed them these last 10 years. The series is a far better adaptation than I ever expected and they are just ending the story after book 6. Both well worth the effort. And I was kinda rooting for the "tween the molecules mass murderers" a little, too. The humans are so fucking stubborn they never learn a single lesson from all their tragedy. Long shot - I remember a movie, made in the late 80s I expect, a comedy, but I don't remember the plot too much.
What was really clever, and I don't know how they did it, they would lead you into thinking it was about the military, or they were in the Army, something like that. They'd break the third wall, then two of the actors would say "Yeah, but we're not in the Army". My jaw dropped. Then resume the movie. And then suck you right in again. "Yeah, but we're not in the military". They did this a few times. It was really clever, or at least I thought at the time. Ring a bell with anybody? "Remember the Night" is my favorite. Just Love it. Stanwyck was just lovely.
Posted by: Tuna at December 18, 2021 08:26 PM (gLRfa) It's a great film. Starts with a silly setup, then goes about being a quite mature and ultimately hopeful film about love and redemption. Particularly jarring is when Stanwyck goes back to see her mom, and we get a glimpse of how she turned out the way she did. Then McMurray rather naively asks about her father, and she gets a look on her face, and says something to the effect of "don't go there." Yes, they knew about this stuff back then. Maybe better than we do today. Posted by: BurtTC at December 18, 2021 09:08 PM (riNnz) 293

Over the years, I have collected (and watched) most of the Christmas Carol movies. Alastair Sim is my favorite Scrooge, even though his movie departed a lot from the original story.
Have you see the 1971 animated 'A Christmas Carol' where Alastair Sim repeated his portrayal of Scrooge, but as the voice actor? It's only half an hour, so the story is quite abbreviated, but the animation is very imaginative, and creepy as hell. Marley's Ghost was this staring horror with his mouth hanging wide open and not moving as his voice came out! It's almost too scary for little kids; I saw it on TV when it came out and I must have been 12 or so, and it scared me. It's on YouTube, I'm pretty sure. Yeah, Apollo 8 is arguably the pinnacle for US. After that, the actual moon landing was a foregone conclusion.
Apollo 8 was the first time humans had left the earth. Huge ballsy move by NASA, they hadn't planned to do it, but the Lunar Module was experiencing delays in delivery. So they decided "F It", so to speak, and decided earth orbit was wasting time, and get a headstart on the Soviets who were rumored by CIA to be getting a manned moon mission going. And they did it on Christmas Eve. I vaguely remember watching it, they had a primetime or bit later TV Broadcast. I do recall my Grandfather crying, and I couldn't figure out why. Now I know why. The reading from Genesis still gives me chills every frigging time I hear that. Bormann just wanted to Beat the Soviets, he didn't care about landing on the Moon. Lovell got robbed on 13, not sure about Anders. Think he retired after that. Pretty sure he took the "Earthrise" picture, one of the most iconic photographs ever. Lotta guys didn't want to push their luck. Mike Collins was "one and done" too, and could have commanded a mission probably. Posted by: Common Tater at December 18, 2021 09:22 PM (uzvcg) 355

one thing I liked the most about "Christmas Story" was that the writer was one of the few people who actually remembered what it was like to be a kid - not how we tell ourselves it was after we grow up. All of the little stories are told from Ralphies POV, and he's got a kind of cracked, almost insane way of looking at things most of the time. But I remember, that was exactly how I thought at that stage of my life; insane things made perfect sense to me.
And also, adults, especially parents, were the people who and your friends worked really hard to fool every waking minute of your life. That's how I remember it! Posted by: Tom Servo at December 18, 2021 09:23 PM (evAgx) 361

I translate French movies and make fansubs for fun, and I've found my interest in French cinema pretty much ends right where the New Wave begins. French film in the 1950s was drop dead beautiful - writing, cinematography, acting, set design were at the top of their game. Then these little commie snots came in began ridiculing those movies, claiming they were too artificial and polished, and *their* movies were all gritty realism. Everything just got ugly after that. And I hated looking at the women in French films of the New Wave - they all wore dresses that looked itchy.

Posted by: DB at December 18, 2021 09:29 PM (0KxNW) -------------------------- The wife and I watched a Hallmark-style Christmas movie a few weeks ago - A Castle for Christmas. It was awful, but followed the usual formula. It did have some nice settings, and the townsfolk were delightful, but everything else was awful. At one point, towards the end of the movie, they introduce two new characters in such a way that you'd think they're going to be involved in the plot resolution, but no. You never hear about them again. And there is a hilariously bad edit at one point. I'm guessing it's because Cary Elwes was dismounting a horse while wearing a kilt. Probably flashed the goods. Do angels not sing because there is no mention of them ever singing (in either the first Jewish release, or the comprehensive Christian edition?)? And possibly that angels don't make art because (via Tolstoy) art is a creation sharing our subjective experience and our enlightened subjective experience of reality and creation is what makes us unique in the material universe, and so it is likely that angels don't experience life the same way, hence can't make art?
