First-World Problems...

tricklecharger.jpg

Covid plus crappy weather plus working at home plus life has conspired to drain car batteries all over the world!

I was first introduced to these marvelous little gadgets several years ago when my parents' car would sit for weeks and weeks. I bought one for a ridiculously low price and it worked like a charm. Hook it up to the car battery and...that's it! it took a few days to recharge it, and it wouldn't work on a completely dead battery, but still, as convenient modern tools go, this is a good one.

Fast forward to today, and the next generation of these things is happily recharging the battery on one of our cars. You know...the one that is driven 14 miles each week, at low speed, and only for about three minutes at a time. Just perfect for draining batteries!

Oh...I also use it to condition my sump pump backup batteries!

Wait...this isn't a problem. it is a marvel.

So what modern miracles make you smile when you use them?

31 My FWP is basically me and laziness. My daughter's old suburu with nearly 200K she drives to school go the old check engine light. So I check the code with my cheap thingamabob and get the code and its a cylinder 3 misfire. Ok, so start the cheapest, change the spark plug (bought all 4, just want to make sure what it is). 2 weeks later, same code. So I switch the spark cables of 1 and 3 and 2 days later, yep cylinder 1 misfire. So bad cable.

Now what I should have done, which I knew, was to just check the cable with my multimeter in the first place. As I said, my fwp is me. Oh and always change your spark plugs and cables all at once, unless you are me.

Dad has a tow behind Lincoln. 4cylinder iron duke powered. Rats ate the control system wiring and he traded for it to repair some redneck's 4 wheeler. Don't know what he's done with it since he moved from Franklin Parish, LA out to mom's place south east of Waco.

I've got one of those, which will also run from a cigarette lighter outlet in a car. It's come in handy on a number of occasions.

Speaking of, I'd advise against anyone buying a car without a real cigarette lighter outlet (or "accessory outlet" as it's often styled in these PC days). USB is cool and all, but it can't deliver the raw amps you can get out of one of those old-school lighter outlets.

66 If you drive a diesel, be careful about using boost boxes to jump your vehicle if the battery is dead. If your glow plugs are not self-regulating, the over-voltage condition that those boost boxes can produce can burn the plugs - causing them to crack and break off inside the cylinder. Don't need to tell you why that's a bad thing I hope

My personal modern day miracle is carbide tipped cutting blades. They rip through wood AND non-ferrous metals which is quite nice because I can setup a mini-fabrication shop in my garage and NOT have to buy specialty tools just to cut up steel. The wood tools work just fine.

When it comes to electric lawnmowers, these things were the shiznit. Perfect for small lawns, ran off an extension cord, no batteries to go dead. You lay out the cord, and mow away from, using the flipover handle on the mower to make parallel to-and-fro swaths. When I worked for my father in his mower shop, I serviced a fuckton of them. New belts, new pulleys, new bronze bushings for the blade spindles, and sharpen or renew the pivoting blades, and good for another few years.

182 I've been super impressed with the little jumper battery I got a while back. I can't believe the punch this little sucker packs! I've started vehicles even AAA had trouble jumping in the past. One reviewer on YT (Project Farm IIRC) did a comparison review on these, starting a tractor. I got one of the recommended middle-range ones for around $75 and am delighted. Little zipper case, keep it in my car. Nice to no longer have to worry about jumper cables. I've started maybe close to a dozen cars and it's still at around 70% charged.

I keep a trickle charger on the motorcycle during lousy weather - and will probably get one for my big car once I get it roadworthy again. Right now, a V8 isn't a priority for some reason.

Other tech continues to get worse and worse. Inkjet printers for one. This whole "lease" concept is being pushed awfully hard by corporations, they really don't want you owning anything, do they? HP's got their whole ink subscription thing (which sounds good if you don't actually read the TOS), and if you've got a brand-new barely used magenta and let your subscription lapse? That's right, they turn off your ink.

So many people, so few lightposts.

218 willowed but since I'm relentlessly dull -

nova local, your musings are reasonable, in an a priori way, but not really rigorous - and there is no real-world experience that confirms them.

Yes there is a probably insuperable problem in getting "clean" comparisons, and good (comparable) test and control groups, etc., when dealing with mass public health measures.

But there's been a century of observation and actual research including RCTs on most "mitigation" measures, none of them have ever been validated as worthwhile. And there have been large RCTs done in the present situation (including masks) that .... yield exactly the same results as decades of research and observation have done.

It's simply not the case that a *prevalent* highly transmissible virus is "mitigated" by lockdowns. There's no evidence for it, there's tons of evidence to the contrary. Sweden had the lowest "excess deaths" in western Europe, and one of the mildest winter health seasons in 20 years, while doing almost nothing. This is not an outlier, and there are lots of similar records with other jurisdictions - no "mitigation", results indistinguishable from other places.

245 I'm fine with charging for air compressors, and here's why: with the death of full service gas stations, I only know of 2 places in my town where I can go and put air in my tires. Nobody except mechanics shops even have compressors anymore. (they used to be everywhere) The closest one to me is a pay compressor in a grocery store parking lot, and the grocery store doesn't own it or care about it; they just let someone put it there on the hope they could make a bit of money for it. It's not much different than a coin operated car wash; if they didn't charge I'd have to buy a compressor I hardly ever need and keep it around just because there will be no publicly available compressor outlets anywhere in town.

And if I don't want to pay for it, I don't have to use it.

I inadvertently discovered something interesting today. My 10,000 btu kerosene heater wouldn't ignite. It uses two D cell batteries. So I popped the top, felt to see if the wick was wet and pressed the igniter. I guess I should have removed my finger first.

I think I now know what a taser feels like. But from two D cell batteries?

250 one modern thing my better half really appreciates is remote tire monitors. While common on newer small vehicles, not so much on RV's. She's terrified of a blowout on the big rig, so having a monitor showing actual pressure and temperature calms her down ... plus the warnings if either go over or under a preset value has come in handy. Picked up a nice sharp chunk of a pair of pliers on the highway ... immediate warning.
Also put one on the motorcycle ... which had warning lights ... but I wanted the pressure so I didn't have to kneel down and pray to the tires before every ride (knees getting old).

They were only on for a couple hours a night.

In my business, I try to keep my batteries down to as few as possible, everything is rechargeable. I'd go broke otherwise. AA for lights, the camera batteries and CR123 for lights and my flashlights. Unfortunately, my laser measure uses AAA, so I'm forced to have a few of those on hand. I'd highly recommend getting a NiHM battery charger set - Enloop by Sanyo is one of the best. Even the base charger does a great job (I have 2 programmable types) and does AA and AAA. You can get a set for between $20-30 (or could last I checked). You'll never go back.

And actually, I've had good luck with Amazon's branded batteries (regular and rechargeable) - most OEM's are well known, but it does vary so you probably got lemons.

Smaller diameter ones work perfectly well, too. You just need to take care using them, or you will kink the snake (phrasing?). Advance the snake a few inches, let it grind away for a minute, then pull it back a few inches, repeat.

Pro tip I learned from a professional drain guy, before I bought my own: don't put an attachment on the end. Just the end of the snake will typically do the job, without the risk of snagging badly.

Simpler, more convenient solution: buy cheap air compressors (~$20). I put one in every vehicle. That way you can pump up a tire on the road, if need be, such as after replacing a flat tire with the toy tire, which will most definitely need inflation.

My local Home Depot is the exception. I just came from there, everything I needed was showing in stock on the website, none of it was on the shelf.

Although to be fair, it was probably stuffed behind the bags of mortar in the masonry section. They do a really shit job of keeping the shelves in order. Not to mention shopping carts. They don't keep ANY shopping carts next to the entrance, it's a treasure hunt to find them, usually 100 yards away at the far end of the parking lot.

335 I don't drive much and not very far so this year I took precautions.

1. bought a chargeable jump starter. About the size of three frozen dinners. Can recharge just about anything and has a flashlight in the unit.

2. I already have 2 engine heaters. 1 is for the engine oil pan and the other is for the automatic trans oil pan. Well worth the electricity

3. This year I added a trickle charger hooked up to the same timer that runs the engine heaters. All of it under the hood so I don't have to leave it behind outside or drag it inside when I use the car. There's a plug coming out from under the hood that hooks everything up. I put it on a timer because once they reach a certain heat they're not going to heat it any further but the electricity is still getting used. So I run it about 50% of the time. The trickle charger is hooked direct. '

The difference is amazing; quicker starts is the big difference and also knowing that the battery isn't slowly getting discharge so it goes bad one freezing morning.

First world solutions.

Turns out it's either 1) in a totally different location or 2) they don't have any. I hate that place. Every time I go I wonder why I didn't just drive the extra 3-4 minutes to go to Ace, where some person walks me right to what I need. In stock.

Can't remember what it was I was just there for, and they were out. I just bought a new cooktop and double wall oven at Lowes. Not only was lowes cheaper than the sale at HD, but they had the things in stock instead of not having or backordered. I did get a built in microwave at HD though, they managed to make that one a lot cheaper than Lowe's for some reason.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at January 16, 2022 03:32 PM (MO4EG)

I think all consumer targeted "all in one" printers are garbage. Epson's large format pro printers are excellent. But that's a different demographic. 3 grays, 2 cyans, 2 magentas etc. all with UV resistant inks. I had gotten one to print my ex's artwork. I have a Canon large format that's not quite as extravagant, but does a great job. I hate my Canon all-in-one as well. Sometimes it'll take 5 minutes to print a single page of text. I'm going back to color lasers next time around.

Check Youtube, sometimes there's some clever hacks/workarounds for the cartridge thing to fool the stupid printers. Epson does have their refillable printers, but at that cost I'll fork over a tad more for laser. I have my big Canon for photo quality prints.

After 30 years of dragging out the gasoline generator and hooking it, running it intermittently in fair weather and foul for 3, 4 or even 5 days of power outages, we installed a standby generator last spring. In spite of numerous high wind storms and even a couple of tornadoes in the area last spring and summer where hundreds of thousands of homes lost power around us for several days at a time, we had a single 9 hour outage.

If I had known a standby generator could send the worst of the storms away from our house like that I'd have put one in sooner.
