Teddy the tiny miniature horse got over-protected by his mother so he didn't make friends, but now wants to make some.

Squirrel spa day.

Puppy herds ducklings.

Sled dog.

Cats with big ears.

UPS driver shares videos of meeting dogs.

Now at the Universal Theme Park, Saw: The Ride.

Bunny is single and ready to mingle.

Weather balloons being shined on by Venus during an aurora borealis.

Precious family moments.

Asymmetrical hide and seek.

Nope. Not even once.

Inman: Uproar in Terminal 24.

Your weekly "Bullsh*t or Not?" clip. Seems fake though. But it would take a lot of actual skill to pull off.

I'm pretty sure that bear is a fellow pet and is trying, and failing, to interest the dog in playing. Here's a video of a different dog and bear playing and roughhousing together.

Here is a bear and some dogs (and a brave woman) who are not playing.

Retired bomb-sniffing dog is bored and listless.

So her owner/former partner gives her some of the excitement of her old job.

We had one that perpetually wound our hunting dog up. He was a fat old squirrel that would even come up the full view glass patio door, flick his tail dismissively, and then slowly hop away after making our dog crazy about catching the squirrel on the other side of the window.

40 Notice that in the airport brawl, there was not one TSA employee to be seen? Not. One.

Fat lotta good they do in the airports, other than making Federal Salaries and Federal Retirement for the sadistic pleasure they derive from torturing us through their Security Theater of the Absurd.

True story. Fired at a Three Gun Nation match in Orlando, FL. Final relays were Sunday morning, lunch and rankings/awards thereafter. Then, pack it all up and to the airport I go. They choose me for the "explosives" swab. Lot of attention to the shoes. They stick the oversized Q-tip into the analysis machine, wait a minute and then the "beep", accompanied by a green light. WTF over? I'm covered head to toe in powder residue from pistol, rifle and shotgun, and don't peg the machine's meter? REALLY? I shut up and didn't say a word, knowing that to do so would be the stupidest think I could imagine to do. Flight back to Houston, claim my "hardware" at baggage claim at Hobby Airport, and make my merry way back home.

Rest easy, America. TSA's best are on the job for at you!

That is instinctive behavior for some breeds of dogs. My wife had a border collie that would ensure that each of the 5 quarterhorses would only eat out of their own feed pan. Horses, especially the ones that were pigs at the trough, hated that dog.

The FDA has just approved some eye drops that are supposed to improve short field vision. The drops can replace reading glasses, they claim.

The drops are called "Vuity", and will cost $80 for a one month supply.

If the elites do not turn away from their path, they won't live through this. This is increasingly a world-wide issue and Covid is simply pushing it to the extreme.

Latin America is still relatively underpopulated so a lot of repressive regimes can be ignored in remote areas or bribed to allow relatively normal life (aside from Cuba and Venezuela). Western nations don't have that release valve and the pressure is building.

At some point, the elites will crack like in royalist France (remember the early role of Lafayette in the French Revolution) or the Sov Union, once the cracks appear in the ruling elite facade, we are off to the races.

130 Hey, gang, got a question for the Catholics among you.

As you know, I make Rosaries, custom for the Morons who want them, non-custom for other folks, and I do it whether I have a specific order or not. (It's the only hobby/devotion I've found that doesn't end up with my cat smeared in oil paint or tangled in yarn. What can ya do? Gotta keep the fingers busy.

Anyway, I've got about 70 of them at the moment. Back when the number was closer to 40, I called around the local area and found a parish willing to take them. That was shortly before Tanksgiving, and they said they'd call after then, and come pick them up, since I have trouble reading road signs while driving.

They never called back, so my question: what do I do with this surfeit of Rosaries? I'll happily mail them out one or two at a time; that postage is affordable. But in box lots? Sorry, out of my "give away free" range.

155 Unless you define "first class" air travel as private jets, I dont think the difference between steerage and luxury cabins on liners is comparable to first class and not on jetliners. Remember, even Romney got caught and harassed by somebody with a cell phone when he flew at a regular airport. And he's a wheel AND rich. The general stall in everything in the physical world besides computer stuff since the 70s is unsettling when I consider it. It's like all other forms of technology that aren't related to electronics just hit a wall. And thought, too.

168 If I understand what you two are saying it is that the underclasses have always suckd,
that we seem not ot have a way to get rid of the underclass,
that we need to reset everything somehow?

That's not it, at least for me. It's more that the "underclass" as you put it, may not have had the refinement and goods of the "upper class" but unless you are looking at the absolute debauched bottom, the "underclass" had a value of innate decency. More and more, especially in cities, it's acceptable to be simply feral.

174 155 Unless you define "first class" air travel as private jets, I dont think the difference between steerage and luxury cabins on liners is comparable to first class and not on jetliners.

Partly. But they're really good at profiling, too. Trained heavily for it in fact. For example, they notice your shoelaces. Because of a certain oddity with the way shoes are sold in Arab countries. Laces are usually bought separately from shoes. That kinda stuff.

Odds are certain that they've pulled your *entire* electronic profile and all .gov databases on you, from probably within the first 15 min. of your having bought your ticket for the flight. Especially if you're a first time flyer with them.

Guarantee you also, you're on their cameras from the moment you emerge from your ride to step into the terminal. If you're on El Al in a U.S. terminal, you'll be on their cameras as soon as you step into their ticketing/check in area, well before you even transit the TSA amusement park. I'd betcha they could order your lunch for you from the correct fast-food or restaurant at the airport, and your order would be exactly as you'd want. "Profiling" goes so very far beyond what the mere "activists" imagine. So very beyond even their nightmares. PRAY we never have a TSA that "profiles" as do the Israelis.

190 Depending where you are in Brazil there's a substantial non-white middle-ish or prosperous working class, and very large numbers do not live in favelas or anything like it.

But the general observation holds, and it's already visible in places like CA. The analogy like most doesn't work perfectly. Simplifying, you can swap in today's vastly over-compensated public employees for part of the true middle class that's been destroyed by real/normal, and artificial, economic change (anyone from engineer to skilled labor in manufacturing, for example). This sort of swap-out is starkly visible in real life here.

Massive political change is always a lagging indicator behind social change. Eventually the political system will be forced to match the social system which is increasingly resembling anarchy--even among the hoi polloi.

Rome had the luxury of enemies being distant for centuries--we don't and the inability of the elites to restrain their appetites makes it more likely for a reckoning sooner than later. Simply put, when the fiat money becomes worthless, the state has to rely on direct coercion of which it is remarkably incapable of exercising very effectively.

I stopped a couple of nights in Dubai on the way back. Outbound, I had a sleeping pod and all I could self-medicate with.

Were these released from trial? Or is someone deciding that maybe the show-trial needs a little reminder that they can't scrub it?

233 212 Almost certainly not. Just as certain is the damage now occurring will continue and get worse. America's feeble attempt at "backlash" for this outrage just happened. It's over. Pretty much a twitch in a corpse, with regard to those issues. Posted by: rhomboid

As the nation balkanizes, the federal government is becoming revealed as feckless, braindead, and drifting. None of the national branches and institutions have any good will left--only yay from partisans when one side or the other dominates a particular institution. Feral criminals stalk our large cities while quality of life implodes. Even the military is dropping in public esteem.

Change generally comes when elites split usually for opportunistic reasons--I think the Pelosi Democrats want an elected tyrant but can't manage an ice cream shop in a heat wave, oligarchs want a Chinese system but many of them have no realistic experience of being punched in the nose or having their families kidnapped for ransom, and leftists want Mao but lack the hard earned discipline of twenty plus years fighting the Nationalists and the Japanese.

245 No personal offense to anyone here that IS this way....but I was 14 when Star Wars came out. Saw it in theater. Thought it was cool enough. Knew it was VERY basic SF, even more so than original Star Trek. Have never understood adult obsession with it , the story, or the characters. I get nostalgia, I will still watch Them once in a while, but I never wished there were sequels nor wanted to read more about what would have happened to the characters, dress up like them...just don't get the continuing Star Wars obsession at all.

Some first class on some airlines, usually foreign, are still like the glamour days. In the US, most due to boom bust cycle are like flying a bus. Flying overseas, I prefer foreign carriers because I don't fly enough anymore to make it worth while to worry about frequent flier crap.

Posted by: whig at December 13, 2021 08:35 PM (9hXN1)
---------------------------

Last I flew first class was in late 2019, right before the Kung Flu debacle hit. Normal-sized seat instead of a repurposed rear jump-seat from an old Ford Ranger, marginally better quality screen on the seatback in front of me, a pre-takeoff red wine that was really quite good, and a meal that was straight out of a middle school cafeteria. The worst part is, it was worth the extra scratch just to have a human-sized seat. They know that, so the rest of the "first class amenities" have gone to shit. The more miserable coach is, the more people will pay for a marginally better first-class ticket. I think the good wine was purely accidental.

I've only paid for 1st twice in my life but my jobs have required lots of travel and I always negotiated keeping my miles rather than giving them to the company. And the last company I worked at we had a rule that any flight over 6 hours was eligible for 1st and that was the majority of my flights.

I was a Delta million miler a couple times over and that gets you a lot of priority on upgrades for domestic travel. For a number of years I didn't travel anywhere where I wasn't in 1st and it was always free, to me anyway.

Depends on the airport. Some were pretty plush, some were just meh. The one in LA blows chunks but the one in Amsterdam that they share with KLM was sweet. The best part was just being away from the craziness of the terminal.

My favorite one was in the airport in Lima, Peru. It was in the middle of the airport but it had an open air courtyard with a little garden, good food and free booze. Free booze goes a long way with me.

279 There's a new book out, One Day in August by David O'Keefe, that contends . . .

In less than six hours in August 1942, nearly 1,000 British, Canadian, and American commandos died in the French port of Dieppe in an operation that, for decades, seemed to have no real purpose. Was it a dry-run for D-Day, or perhaps a gesture by the Allies to placate Stalin's impatience for a second front in the west?

Canadian historian David O'Keefe uses hitherto classified intelligence archives to prove that this catastrophic and apparently futile raid was, in fact, a mission set up by Ian Fleming of British Naval Intelligence as part of a "pinch" policy designed to capture material relating to the four-rotor Enigma Machine that would permit codebreakers like Alan Turing at Bletchley Park to turn the tide of the Second World War.

-
I previously read a book that contended that among the purposes of Dieppe was to allow commandos (and a scientist they had been ordered to kill rather than allow be captured) to steal a radar component from a site on a cliff near the beach.

For example, the word is getting out about the side effects of the vaxx and people are noting athletes in the prime of their life collapsing on the field of play. Polling shows a collapse in the belief of most institutions and a collapse in the regime's popularity. Many societal institutions have also indicated themselves to be run by destructive idiots--the media, the military, medicine, large corporations, universities, tech companies, retailers, non-profits, and churches, and so on.

And this is not only a US phenomenon but throughout the Western world (with the notable exception of Japan). We are seeing in real time the failure of the uniparty post WWII liberal order. What will come next, I don't know but our elites are acting very uncomfortable.

Yeah, then United merged with ass-raped Continental, and all the miles banked-up suddenly sprouted expiration dates. "Use 'em by XX date, because they're vapor after that!". And their "new accounting" for earning miles is best not discussed in polite company.

*doffs hat* A moment of quiet respect for the once great airline, Continental. Nearly all the fun of Southwest, but with First Class, assigned seating and food-not-pretzels service. Oh well. We'll never know what flying once was, pre 9/11, again.

Like the discussion earlier today about West Side Story being Romeo and Juliet, and Romeo and Juliet being a half-dozen earlier similar stories.

Star Wars is "The Hero's Journey." It's been told a thousand times over for a reason. SW being a simple and schlocky version of it doesn't change that.

My wife and her mother got treated that way when my mother in law was ready to buy a brand new Nissan 4x4. She went to another dealer and drove back to the original crappy dealer to show off her new Nissan 4x4.

My wife got called Norma Rae one time at a dealer because she insisted they fix her car while I was on deployment. Had a sticking throttle body. She hates car repair shops with a passion. One firearm dealer did the same thing to her wanting her to try out a little pink pistol. She prefers her GP-100 revolver in .357 magnum.

355 Just a capsule description, I understand, of that book on Dieppe - but that kind of operation to snatch a 4-rotor Enigma machine doesn't compute with my memory of the see-saw battle to keep breaking into enough comms to help with operations.

The key to every other snatch either explicitly planned (like the German weather ship up north) or opportunistically (like U-505 the day before D-Day, the instant non-scuttling of which to preclude any German knowledge of it required approval all the way up to King) was that the Germans weren't aware of the snatch.

Not really an option with a 1,000-man commando raid.

there are a lot of stories about how the ENIGMA was broken, from the story of the Polish team with their mechanical Bombe, to the U-Boat with the Navy 3-1/2 rotor, and the Italian Pre-War transmission where the operator just hit the A key multiple times to simulate a message. Any of them could be a cover story dreamed up to hide any real story. Lot of feinting going on there.

I had heard the Dieppe raid had been a successful grab for German Radar, but then again it could have been both, or it could have been another cover story to hide the Radar raid.

it could also have been one of those delightful operations where tasks kept being added on because no one was in a position to say no.
