The Saturday Night Joke

Bill and Doug went to the fair. They came across a small crowd gathered around a stall and went over to take a look. "What's going on?" Bill asked one of the crowd. "We're watching to see if some idiot can ride that bronco machine," he said nodding towards a fearsome looking machine. "Nobody has managed to stay on for the full three minutes yet. And, there's a prize of $1000 for anybody who can."

"I can do that," Bill said confidently. "You can't," said Doug. "You'll get yourself killed if you try and ride that thing."

"Watch this," said Bill, as he climbed aboard the bronco machine. The machine thrashed wildly, up and down, from side to side, around in circles but still a grim faced Bill clung to its back. After two minutes the machine was bucking almost vertically and spinning until Bill was a blur. But when the three minutes were up, Bill was still on the machine's back acknowledging the cheers and cries from the small crowd.

He dismounted, collected his winnings and rejoined Doug. "Where did you learn to ride a bucking bronco like that?" Doug asked. "Remember three months ago," Bill said, "when my wife had whooping cough...?" (H/T ALH)

Congress mandates safety features. But does the technology exist?

Congress is making its biggest push ever to stop drunk driving with President Biden's huge infrastructure bill. As we previously reported, one of the provisions included a mandate for anti-drunk driving technology in new cars. Now, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has passed Congress with the measure intact, Autoblog (AP) reports, and it's expected to be signed by the President soon. As part of the legislation, carmakers will have to include technology to detect and stop drunk drivers by as early as 2026.

First, though, the Department of Transportation will have to determine the best solution to curtail intoxicated drunk driving. Specifically, the bill requires something that will “passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired.” That sounds similar to infrared camera solutions already used today by GM, Nissan and others, Sam Abuelsamid, principal mobility analyst for Guidehouse Insights, tells the AP. It goes without saying that we'd need something more advanced than breathalyzers, which are already used as a punishment for convicted drunken drivers.

Speaking of auto safety measures. Holy Shit! Moose!

If you aren't afraid of winters, enjoy fishing and ice hockey. This might be the town and relocation for you.

Last year, like many Americans, Matt Fahrenbruch found himself suddenly doing his job from home. He lived in Topeka, Kan., where he audited programs for the state Legislature.

As remote work continued during the pandemic, and his team’s productivity didn’t suffer, he began to realize that if he could work from home, then home could be anywhere he wanted. He and his wife had often thought about relocating to the Upper Midwest. Fahrenbruch, 39, had studied at the University of North Dakota, and they loved the region.

Gadgets that are the worst?

Over its 10-year history, The Verge has reviewed hundreds of products: smartphones that have changed the way that we communicate, take photos, and engage with the world; incredible laptops that pack the power of a gaming PC into a portable package; and consoles that have revolutionized how we play.

These are not those products, though. As The Verge turns 10, we’ve taken the time to look back at some of the highest highs of the world of consumer technology… but also the biggest duds that ended up on our desks.

Welcome to The Verge’s gadget hall of shame. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Social media is garbage. Self-love is important, I guess. Especially when there is a whole lotta self to love.

GO FIGURE I’m fat and gorgeous so I post sexy photos in my underwear – people constantly troll me but they’re just fatphobes

ONE woman is hitting back at the haters saying that she is happy in her own skin even though constantly ridiculed for her weight.

21-year-old Jilly from Pennsylvania, says that others don't understand how she can post photos in underwear and feel sexy, but she says that's just fatphobia.

Hard to believe we are approaching Thanksgiving already. Study up, here are some Do's and Don'ts.

You’ve been invited to a Thanksgiving gathering. Hooray! You don’t have to plan, prep, shop, chop and cook for days. While the host will be doing the lion’s share of work to make the day tasty and festive, each guest also bears a portion of responsibility for it unfolds. You don’t need to baste a bird every 30 minutes, but you do need to bring thoughtfulness to the occasion.

It goes without saying you should avoid talking politics, religion, or your thoughts on the COVID vaccine. In the spirit of helpfulness and harmonious interaction, here are some less obvious things not to when invited to someone’s home on Thanksgiving (and what you can do instead).

Genius Award Winner.

A Massachusetts family whose loved one’s casket fell open as it was being lowered into a grave, causing the body to fall out, has sued the funeral home and the cemetery.

The family of Andrew Serrano, a resident of Lawrence who died in March 2019, allege negligence and reckless infliction of emotional distress in the suit filed last Wednesday in Essex Superior Court, The Eagle-Tribune reported.

During the funeral handled by the Perez Funeral Home at city-owned Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence on April 5, 2019, “one of the side straps on the city-owned casket lowering device broke, causing Mr. Serrano’s casket to fall into the grave and break apart,” according to the suit.

The “corpse fell out of the casket” in full view of “horrified family members who became visibly distraught and hysterical,” the suit said.

Infuriating, unfortunately.

https://outline.com/nDN3j5

This is a link to an article in Politico regarding the Project Veritas raid. Actually sympathetic to O'Keefe, which is the good news. The bad news is that I find it impossible to believe that Josh Gerstein can actually write an article about the PV raid and not mention that someone (at the FBI) leaked some of the contents of the phone to the NYT, which is being sued by PV. He actually mentions the NYT once, but not in reference to this huge conflict of interest. He mentions another lawsuit that PV has with a Democratic entity that I've never heard about, so he really has no excuse. Like I said, infuriating.

Now, off to read The Verge's article about those gadgets. These tech sites are ridiculously liberal in their worldview, so I'm not expecting much.

If you're drinking expensive scotch, drink expensive scotch all night. 65 But, but, but....What about Global Warming? I thought this "snow" thing was a thing of the past?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

There exists an organization called the Oregon Global Warming Commission (State-funded, of course).

In bad snow years, they put up a prominent announcement on their webpage saying that Mount Hood will be without snow in a few years. In good snow years, they quietly remove the announcement from the web page.

The stubborn refusal of Mount Hood to have reduced snowfalls due to gerbil warbeling has caused a lot of angst.

Some scientists (at Oregon State, I think) wrote a paper explaining that gerbil warbeling really was reducing snowfalls on Hood, but that this was being temporarily offset by a long-term snow cycle that is currently positive. When the snow cycle turns negative, then the hoped-for elimination of snow from Hood will rapidly occur.

I gave them points for creative thinking.

73 It goes without saying you should avoid talking politics, religion, or your thoughts on the COVID vaccine.

The best thing I can say about my siblings is that when we get together, we almost never talk about politics. My sisters and I are very conservative Trump supporters, and my brothers and nephews are either RINO's or liberals. There's no point in arguing politics, because we're of German ethnicity and neither side is going to budge. We never get into arguments on holidays.

117 Ok, that drunk driving detection stuff is bullshit and I hate it for political/philosophical reasons.

But let's just look at it from a practical standpoint. There is no way in ten million years that state and local governments would ever - ever - acquiesce to any measure that curtailed their income from DUIs. Not going to happen. It's a yuuuge, luxurious cash cow for them.

Unless, of course, auto companies were forced to give police realtime reporting, and that reporting could be used as a predicate for arrest or subpoena. Which, of course, would be part of the broad interpretation of the vague language in the bill.

165 Sometimes people are cool. Not just Horde people, but regular people.

I was selling beer at a football game today (we sold $45 k worth of beer in 3 hours, if that gives any indication of how busy it was). The company I work for allows only two beers per guest. So a husband and his wife were at the counter, and they both show me their IDs. The each request two beers, so I give them four beers in keeping with policy. The wife has two baskets of food in her hands, so the husband picks up the four beers, and they proceed away from the counter.

A "Alcohol Compliance Officer" from the company I work for spots this and goes berserk. He starts going off on me for selling four beers to one guy, I try to explain the situation, that the wife is there. Doesn't matter. He says. So I just "Yes sir" it....

Give me two Miller Lites and throw $5 on for yourself as a tip." Off-Topic I suppose, but, has anyone else noticed that Russel Brand (of all people) seems to have been severely Red-Pilled? Here's a link to his channel: Russell Brand www.youtube.com/c/RussellBrand/videos

I'm thinking about these two YouTube videos that have appeared on my YouTube page, one dated yesterday, Nov 12, 2021:
https://tinyurl.com/3xrxd8e3 "Err... So You're SURE Trump Wasn't RIGHT About Russia Collusion??!"

and the predecessor (I think), dated Sep 23, 2021:
https://tinyurl.com/m39wwbte "So...Trump was RIGHT About Clinton & Russia Collusion!!"

He seems to have some issues with Jeffrey Epstein, Aug 16, 2021, but I can't find anything about Harvey Goldstein in the last 6 years. It seems like Russell has slowly realized that The Left has had him, and very many other people, bent-over for a number of years, and he now sees what they've been doing.

I wonder who's next.

226 I don't have to worry about ever becoming a wine snob. I can't drink the stuff unless its offshoot like mead. The tannin or something in wine from grapes hits like a kick to the gut. Beer or spirits (not neat) for me. Leaves more wine for the those that can enjoy it.

Posted by: PaleRider, cheerful clinger at November 13, 2021 11:13 PM (3cGpq)

227 Most of the wine snobs I've encountered have lived west of the Cascades in WA and OR.
Bourbon is to me, a much more honest drink.
For any non Floridians here, I'm not thank allah, most liquor stores will do tastings. A very handy way to sample good booze. Montana allows it at distilleries which is very nice. But, it is not lawful to purchase more than two bottles per person at a distillery. Liquor stores have no such limit.

228 Spectacular Santa Ana day, and it was the perfect balance down at Pt Loma - ocean influence enough that the air was almost cool, and some on-shore breeze. Longer-range visibility not what I'd hoped, good, but ground haze/pollution enough to make Catalina and the table-top mountain near Ensenada not visible.

Finally got to talk to the volunteer who runs the military history program, he says there may be expansion ahead (more $, some restoration). Coastal artillery installations dating to WWI but greatly expanded in WWII.

Replica sailing ship in the channel, looked like the kind Cabrilho used to "discover" this bay in 1542. Was just wondering if he faced any difficulties, being Portuguese, but working for Cortes/Spain under contract - seems kinda dicey given the politix and rivalry of the time.

230 Now every bourbon label has 5 or more different variants and strengths. Researching online at local spirits stores, both big box and small, there is also a definite lack of linear pricing between bottle sizes.

Pricing for 750ml - 1 ltr - 1.75 ltr should follow geometric logic (rubs steel bearings), but they don't. It's a madhouse!

I will need a spreadsheet to isolate the value mis-pricing buying opportunity.

231 So it appears I have been pig ignorant about bourbon all these years since adopting Jim Beam primarily because Hank Williams, Jr. had it in many of his songs, and it is cheap.

The bourbon snobs on youtube seem to gleefully include it in their rankings of the 5 worst bourbons ever.

I must rethink this.

234 A pox on the bourbon snobs. I'm fine with Jim Beam as a baseline sippin whiskey. Are there better? Of course.

But there's a whole lot of middle shelf bourbon that if decanted from a fancier bottle behind a more prestigious label, would fool most, if not all.

As said upthread. Sip what you like, and don't worry about the opinions of others. For that matter, I'll be thrilled if or when Tom Sims Bourbon makes it back to the shelves. 4 y/o, smooth as silk, and a 1.75 L out the door for $21. No need to spend twice that on a "prestige" bottle, just to impress.. exactly who?

I've got about 40 of those "Airline Bottles" up on top of the gun safe. Doing the same kind of tastings, in partnership with my USCG neighbor. One bottle will provide about two wee pours into the disposable plastic shot mini-glasses. Here's what we're doing. Sample no more than two varieties in a sitting. Take notes. Pint of water between varieties. Anymore than two samplings will begin to degrade the taste buds as to the nuances and subtleties.

Lastly? Go to Spec's, and get the Airline Bottle of "Fist Full Of Bourbon". I think you'll enjoy!

Minis are great for sampling bourbon. Especially if you can get to Kentucky. So much more variety at liquor stores in Kentucky.

Elsewhere, you should definitely be able to acquire Jim Beam (white label and Black), makers mark, wild turkey (regular and/or 101, Evan Williams.

284 Count de Monet - and Jim SND - that is a great approach, limited only by the number of targeted brands that produce the airline-size bottlings. I've done that with a few bourbons, very cost-efficient approach.

Currently starting from zero in trying different sipping rums. No such luck there, on the small bottles. Should probably research and find a bar with a wide selection of the more specialized brands. So far have bought 2, quite different from each other.

Rum has either no or widely varying "standards" and regulations, so it's kind of chaos and you need to research particular bottles if you're looking for particular things (no sugar added, or solera or single-cask aged, or agricole vs. molassed-based).

Attempting - usually without success - to preserve my palate, which always gets blasted after a while. Another benefit is less alcohol, for driving.

So there can be very practical - aimed at trying more wines - motivations for spitting.

304 re firs female Army sniper. I am sure she deserves it and she should recieve all plaudits. What I wonder is if the juice is worth the squeeze. Is it worth changing all US military norms for a very few people?

When they allowed women into the infantry forces, things changed. Even going through basic changed when the soldier next to you was a chick. And I won't get into the gay issue. In my day, which was not long ago, that alone was a no go.

I can see the idea that everyone that can hack it should have a chance. But for whatever reason, military standards have changed over the years. Back in the day,an infantryman had to carry 70 pounds of gear AND be able to carry his buddy out of a battle zone.

I have nothing against allowing people to compete for vary rare positions. But if people think the Army, and yes, the USMC, have not lowered many standards, then I don't know what to tell them.

BTW,. there are crazy good female soldiers in the Army and Marine Corps. The squared away Marine who handed me a folded flag years ago was a black female. She was legit and i am so happy she was given that duty.

305 Jim, many thanks, but actually I know that BevMo has many of them around here, and I've barely checked the better independents (there are some pretty good ones nearby). Also have actual airline friends - can ask them what they can "borrow".

And the even better news is that TotalWine is finally opening in SD - one sort of wonders what took so long (they've been up in Temecula for a while). They have a much, much broader and deeper serious rum inventory than BevMo, and I'd imagine their bourbon offerings are also extensive (BevMo's aren't bad, as far as my novice eye can tell).

I actually sort of know the BevMo regional manager through family connections, forgot to ask him at the last encounter (recent) what he thought of TotalWine finally entering this market.

I've been a supporter of theater when my Mom started community theater when I was in 7th grade.

Our small rural theater gets the few students not in Fall sports. Three years ago some football stars were in the fall play, which were scheduled around the playoff games. We have strivers in our school.

Did you know there was a relatively low cost way we could have lowered the R(t) of Covid below 1, and killed the pandemic early on?

What is it? UV light sterilizers. Turns out the Covid virus is particularly vulnerable to certain UV wavelengths at intensities that are safe for public exposure.

All you needed to do was put these UV sterilizers in certain strategic public indoor spaces where the most spread was occuring (hospitals, health care, nursing homes, and a few other indoor settings), and you would have killed the damn pandemic right there.

All this wasted money and economic destruction was...unnecessary. This is real Science! of course.

The covid virus is particularly susceptible to destruction by UVC radiation at 222 nm. It's very high energy, but is blocked by the top layer of human skin, and even the top layer of the eyes.

Utterly harmless to humans at the intensity needed to destroy the Covid virus. That wavelength blows up the virus like the Martians hearing Slim Whitman.

361 SMH, can I please share something with you frankly?

I very much respect that you're awaiting Christ's return. I'm a Christian and await it as well. I definitely believe it will happen, someday.

But... I've known too many people who use the prospect of the apocalypse, as an excuse to not do anything to improve their own lives, and/or to manipulate others. I used to know a woman who, during the Obama admin, was constantly predicting Jesus would return in just a few days. She also made it clear that if you didn't agree with her about anything (biblical or not), you were goin' ta hell!! ;-) (Including if you preferred Pepsi over Coke.)

I admit I'm at the point that whenever I hear anyone begin to talk about Christ's return, I get a nervous tic, wondering what they're either going to demand from me, or what their angle is.

I personally think it's extremely selfish of people, who won't do the heavy lifting in their lives to improve anything here on earth, to just yelp it doesn't matter because Jesus will be back soon. IMHO they want God to hit the big red RESET button in the sky and do all the hard work for them.

But I know you're not one of those people. :-)

368 Good evening all

I may have told this story before, apologies if so. My siblings, cousins, and I built the casket for my grandpa. It was a really nice way to express our love even after his death. I think it helped with the mourning process a bit, even though I'm still mourning. When it was close to done I got in and asked them to put the cover on. It smelt like pine and was dark and enveloping. I felt ok then with putting my grandfather's body there. After I was out of course. My grandma, who didn't know what I had done, stated that she would like to crawl in there with him.

The funeral home made sure it was securely closed. Not because of the story I just told but because that was there responsibility.

Im not going to delete this because it's written now but it is hard to judge if I'm being understood without being able to see facial expressions.

Hope everyone is having a good evening.

All you needed to do was put these UV sterilizers in certain strategic public indoor spaces where the most spread was occuring (hospitals, health care, nursing homes, and a few other indoor settings), and you would have killed the damn pandemic right there.

389 The covid virus is particularly susceptible to destruction by UVC radiation at 222 nm. It's very high energy, but is blocked by the top layer of human skin, and even the top layer of the eyes.

Utterly harmless to humans at the intensity needed to destroy the Covid virus. That wavelength blows up the virus like the Martians hearing Slim Whitman.

The beauty of this is that that 222 nm wavelength is the sweet spot. When those photons hit the Covid virus, they kill it dead, Jim, blow it up very efficiently.

And the top layers of our skin, the dead cells absorb this range well and it does not penetrate to living tissue below.

You don't even need to put in the HVAC, although that would be very efficient. Just hang such emitters from the ceilings and on the walls in the high-spread indoor spaces, and Covid is dead.

The hospital where I had my knee replaced in 2019 was using the UV sterilizing robots. After a patient is discharged, the robot is sent in the room, doors and windows are closed, and that thing irradiates the hell out of every surface in the room.

The intensity is dangerous for humans -- you don't want to be exposed to the flux from that thing, and they've got all sorts of safety protocols to use it.

415 Not sure if Red Army sniper units in WWII used spotters, at least all the time. I think it varied. IIRC "Enemy at the Gates"* had Zaitsev sometimes with, sometimes without, a spotter. But that was for close-range, urban engagements. I think spotters are more relevant as ranges extend out to "very far away".

The fine motor skills that, on average, are better in females, lend themselves to sniper responsibilities.

That is the beauty of this. The one wavelength that is the most efficient at killing the Covid virus is one that is utterly safe for humans.

Oh, it's a high energy little photon that would do damage to your DNA if hit living cells, but the dead skin layer is essentially opaque to it. Same for the outer layer of your eyeballs. Opaque.

You can bathe in and look right at the source with no problems. Of course, long term would be a different story. You wouldn't want to risk bathing and staring at it for hours for years or something. But short term, no problem.

In any case, there's no doubt who got Dubya Dubya Two - in Europe - rolling, and it wasn't the short guy from Gori.

I suppose a counter-historical of relevance would be - would Hitler have taken Poland *without* previously conniving with Stalin to divvy it up? Though I think given all the actual known facts, answer is yes, without hesitation. USSR was in no position/condition to do anything about it, and that includes if the Wehrmacht had continued to the Soviet frontier. See Glanz if any doubt remains about that.

Given that Zhukov couldn't get Stalin to approve even minor changes in force dispositions until literally hours before Barbarossa began - and only on the strength of a particularly good line-crossing deserter from the German side with specific info on June 20 - this whole idea of a Soviet offensive westwards (with what objective? with what forces?) has always seemed a silly speculative bit of dust to me. At least in any relevant time frame.

Carlos Hathcock, until the advent of Chris Kyle, was the foremost sniper in U.S. military history. Vietnam era, and his autobiography is very descriptive of the skill and of the art. And then, yes. Also read "American Sniper", the autobiography written by Chris Kyle and I forget his co-author.

A U.S. Sniper, regardless of branch of service, no matter HOW good they are with the rifle, will fail the course if they don't master the entire range of skills required. They've gotta be able to sneak into position over a distance of tens of miles, several days, and all without a bit of external support from "home base". And then make the shot, and get out and away.

Not every engagement is so intense, but enough are, that the standards are set THAT HIGH, and must remain there. Funny, I've got the woodsmanship and land navigation parts down, but I get squirrely on the distance shots out past 500~600 yards. More time with Weasel, is indicated.

482 Quint, OMG yes.

When I was a teenager, my parents discovered a campground in San Diego, called Santa Fe.

It was *between* a freeway (I think I-5) and a still-being-built neighborhood; there was constant traffic noise; and they had a huge clubhouse that looked like a new house, with a game room, MsPacMan, a pool, and super-clean restrooms. It was like camping out at Motel 6 in the middle of the city.

I loved it, even though it was the polar opposite of "getting back to nature" a la Yosemite.

I feel like a decrepit old man sometimes with this RA. I had to get a new damn battery for a tractor here. It's a 4DLT, specs say weighs 78.5 lbs with acid.

I can't handle one without help anymore. I needed one, the damn thing was dead as a doornail this morning and the battery charger couldn't handle that cold diesel. In warm weather, it could. But not know. So I said fuck it, if I can find one this afternoon, I'll replace it. I did.

Well, I go to the store, a NAPA store in Greenville that happened to have one in stock (all the main battery places are closed on Saturdays now). I get there, buy it, then ask the counter man where to back, and I'll help him get the old one out and the new one in.

Oh, no problem he says. He just picks up that brand new 4DLT like it's nothing, walks out to the parking lot really spry like, drops the new one in the truck, and picks up the old one and trots right back in.

*Sigh*. I'm useless, now.

Here in Illinois, there's a mask mandate for businesses and schools.

That may fly in Chicago and its suburbs, but here in southern IL, which is very rural and very red, there are more Pritzker Sucks signs than there are businesses complying with the mask mandates.

In my small town of 3500, no business here complies.

493 When I was commissioned in the Signal Corps in 1991, they were just beginning to field the new MSE (mobile subscriber equipment), aka "cell phones". I should've paid attention to the manufacturers of the stuff and invested in them.

Being a field signal platoon leader is easy. You make sure you have capable NCOs then let them do their jobs. Usually, my job was to interact with company and battalion, and play Sega-Genesis with the E-1 to E-4s. "Sir, we're nearly done setting up the shot. Why don't you go play NHL '95 with Pvt So-and-So?" A good butterbar doesn't reject such advice from a seasoned NCO. (Actually, by that summer camp, I was a 1LT.)

Reading -- skimming over a lot -- of Kirsch's stuff he calculates this. The Smallpox vaccine was the most dangerous in terms of AEs vaccine ever released before.

But, it was sterilizing and conferred real immunity, and smallpox was deadly enough that the risk benefit strongly favored it, even with the high AEs.

Kirsch figures the ClotsShots are a mimimum, 800x times worse than the smallpox vaccine. 2 orders of magnitude, nearly 3.

You know, this might be one of those psychological illusion effects, but I could have sworn I heard a longer version which was more of a story song about a unit with a unit that gets pinned down and the machine gunner gets hit and the singer looks up to find the chaplain manning the gun.

547 Late to ONT here. We finally finished cleaning out Jules' folks apt. today, turned in the keys, what a relief, we are just both so tired we are brain dead.

J and her sister should sue this place for neglect, I've posted details before, but they just want closure. I'm of the opinion they should sue to prevent this from happening to others.

If anyone knows of neglect at Sierra Winds, Peoria AZ please let me know, that might change their minds.

This has been so hard on her, I feel so bad. Let's say the worst is over and better days are ahead.
