Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly

Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today

1) Great posture

2) Feet turned outward like a duck's.

3) If still ballerinaizing, incredible hard body.

4) If shoes off...funky toes.

My key memory of virtually every coffee ad - and this one has it - is people waking up at or after 07:00. At no time in my post-college life have I routinely woken up that late. Between odd shift times, working in alternate time zones, fighting the commute or whatever, I've always been up before then (on weekdays, anyway).

Posted by: andycanuck (UHVv4) at November 19, 2021 09:40 AM (UHVv4)

41 I like the cropping in this one--the composition and framing. Degas was also a photographer and he liked to use the traits of that modern medium in his paintings, like here. The way the one dancer is cut off on the left and the lighting resemble photography. The indoor light is dark because the outside light is so bright. He didn't "adjust for the glare." The girls' faces are all in shadow and unrecognizable. These traits give the painting a spontaneous, snapshot feel. It's a photographic-Impressionist painting.

57 My kid was in this dance school for a while. So twice a year they'd rifle us for money for costumes and to put on a show and then we paid tickets to see our kid in the show we already paid for! And of course, the little kids were only in it for a few minutes but they spread it out over the night so you couldn't just step out when your kids were done, no they had a bit part at the very end.

The worse part is that it was all ages. I was just there for my kid but no. And they had to throw in these nasty assed hiphop moves and there were 15-16yo girls in it. I'm looking up at the damned rafters the whole time, waiting for my little kid to come on. Oh look a lovely light rig I'll look at that instead of this group of teen girls twirking their business in my face. Four years of that and thankfully my kid decided it wasn't for her.

What's wrong with Degas as a person?

I was going to guess "pedophile" because of the obsession with young ballerinas; but that's kind of baked into the art anyway.

Wikipedia suggests maybe it's actually "raving anti-semite". But if it's that, what's the big deal?

I like ballet. I haven't been in a couple of years. Most of it is pretty far from Teh Ghey. I once saw a ballet production of "Dracula" (Liszt music). To say it was "erotic" would be perhaps an understatement. It is the closest thing I have ever seen to pornography where everyone was fully clothed. 86 I don't always care for Degas' scenes but his technique is excellent. I especially like his use of pastels and how he uses them to catch the immediacy of the scene. In this one the girls are almost still but suggest movement. The background cityscape speaks of Paris and a traditional approach to ballet. The figures are in classical poses (as far as I know). It all suggests newcomers to a tradition that started before the girl students and will, presumably, continue into the future.

90 Knew that was Degas without looking. He has a sculpture, The Little Fourteen Year Old Dancer, which is in the Musee d'Orsay. It's an interesting mix of media, and it's also interesting because he's captured the awkwardness of trying to learn ballet. She's twisted and contorted, not smooth and graceful.

Anyway, would hang. Probably wouldn't cross stitch. My backlog is too big.

(I picked Med-El over Cochlear or Advanced Bionics because their advertising actually WAS factual and direct. For example, on the pages talking about music, they laid out the exact mechanism by which their product provided superior appreciation of music, complete with graphs and citations of studies, versus the other two companies, which had, essentially, a big two-page splash of someone who was obviously a model with a dummy implant glued to their head beaming widely with the slogan "Music is cool!!!")

Then-contemporary, yes. The first McGee appeared in 1964, and the last, I think, the year he died in '86. Some are better *adventures* than others. But John D. wanted a character he could live with, in his words. He'd never done a series character since he started writing in about 1950 or so.

142 Would have been Willowed: Let's put to bed one of the big lies of higher education right now. You can't - literally can not - teach somebody HOW to think. You can take somebody that thinks, expose them to some education, and maybe get a better thinker out of the deal.

I disagree with this to some large extent, you can provide the tools for people to spot bullshit, by learning the Classical Rules for Rhetoric - logical fallacies. This is particularly important for young people to learn, and hopefully better recognize when they are being manipulated by unscrupulous types. And there are a lot of unscrupulous types.

And there's no better source for manipulative lies and bullshit than to listen to the "News" or politicos. Go over some of the classic logic errors with your kids. Then get them to point out those errors while watching the various flavors of human filth infesting the body politic.

They'll get it. Right away. And it's something that once learned stays with you forever, and can't be taken away.

Now you know why they don't teach logical fallacies and Rhetoric in schools anymore.

It is the closest thing I have ever seen to pornography where everyone was fully clothed. I don't know how the dancers did it without ripping each others' clothes off and getting down on stage

Oh Lort, you gots to see me in the new ballets productions of "Blackula In Jawja".

It gonna be off da chain erotic!

The House added a bunch of poison pills to their version. Their hope, apparently, is that the Senate passes their own version and they go to committee.

I don't know the last time a major bill has gone to that negotiation stage between both chambers. It would require a revote in both chambers afterwards, and that's a tall order.

I don't think anyone expects this to pass.

178 I disagree with this to some large extent, you can provide the tools for people to spot bullshit, by learning the Classical Rules for Rhetoric - logical fallacies.

Parts of that were taught in my High School AP English classes. I went to a rural, very much poor area - so I can only assume it was widely taught elsewhere in the 80s

Now, look around. Is there any evidence that teaching that did any widespread good ? I don't see any. Any more than giving every man, woman, and child with a cellphone access to the greatest libraries in the world has done any good.

That's my point. You can't teach somebody how to use a tool, that doesn't have a talent for using tools. When it comes to "thinking" ? Most just don't have it.

There is something to be said for allowing teenagers to be children until their brains catch up with their bodies. Sex is both physical and emotional/mental, and they simply aren't there yet. That's why they can't be truly sexual (in a mature sense) until they grow up.

That our culture ignores this and celebrates the most base aspects of physical maturity is a damning indictment of us, and indicative of how far we have fallen.

My MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR gripe about all of these spending bills is that they are being done outside of the Constitutional budget process.

The last proper federal budget (12 appropriation bills) was approved in 2006 under President Bush and we hobble along with continuing resolutions, which are patchwork Rube Goldberg spending plans.

Republicans need to demand that Joe Biden present a FEDERAL BUDGET as is required and stop this Christmas tree spending shit.

MPPPP, right *lower* jaw? My bout with what I suspect was COVID in Dec. '19 began with an ache in my *upper* right jaw. At first I thought, "Oh, great, toothache" -- but that's where years back I had an extraction; it was very unlikely to be a tooth problem.

The infection moved swiftly into my nose and head, and knocked me flat for several days. Urgent Care diagnosed "bacterial sinusitis" and gave me antibiotics, and I took them and was quickly better. But I might have been on the mend even before; or the bacterial infection might have ridden in on top of the coof, if that's what it was. Look into some ivermectin if you have it, Vitamin D3, C, and zinc. Can't hurt and might help.

OMG yes! The vulgarity currently in popular dance is so off-putting. As a male of the species, the female is so tantalizing perhaps because of their inherent grace and beauty in their form and movement that is absent in the male. Even though I'm in Sir Mix-a-lot's camp regarding the posterior, seeing the squatting and flapping is sooooo gross.

The two party system has us by the short and curlies. We really need to figure out how to create a third party and push it over the hump for long enough to revise the system to one that no longer penalizes third parties.

No ranked choice crap (that's how you get Empress Merkel). All of the current system could be preserved, all we'd have to do is just add a runoff election if none of the top two candidates had a majority. Voting for a third party in the general election would be "safe", since if they didn't make the top two, you could still vote for the least worst option.

Todays Democrat party bears little resemblance to the Democrat party of 40 or even 20 years ago. The far left infiltrated the party and now runs it and dictates policy.

That seems a much better model to me and it's already in process thanks largely to Trump.

Werner Herzog is one of those directors whose persona has transcended his directorial efforts. He has, of course, a very distinctive speaking style. More people probably know about him through The Mandalorian and Paul F. Tomkins impersonation of Herzog reviewing a Trader Joe's on Yelp than any movie he's worked on.

Look up the Yelp review, by the way. It's hilarious.

That was actually me, MPPPP. Not being a doctor, I don't know if there are sinus areas in the lower jaw as well as the upper. My admittedly sketchy knowledge of anatomy tells me there are weird spaces in our skulls. If it feels like it's near the base of your teeth, of course, it could be a tooth issue. If it feels to be under your jaw, then could that be salivary glands? Not sure. The classic home test for mumps was to give the patient a pickle and see if he yelped.

Does anybody get mumps any more?

392 Third parties don't work in a 1st past the post system. If a third party start to gather momentum, one of the two major parties absorbs it.

Trump had the opportunity to create a MAGA party, split the GOP, and then try to absorb the GOP (replacing the internal power brokers). But that ultimately would have created a new two party system (with different people in charge of the successor GOP).

423 The two party system has us by the short and curlies. We really need to figure out how to create a third party and push it over the hump for long enough to revise the system to one that no longer penalizes third parties.

Even a brief scan of McCain / Feingold is enough to show that it has nothing to do with campaign finance reform, and everything to do with preventing a third party.

Isn't it amazing, a country of over 350 million people are held hostage by a political process, only because that process is dominated by two parties that agree on one thing - Highlander was wrong.

In the end, there can be only two.

I don't see it as being likely to happen, but you should always plan for every contingency. I believe it was Eisenhower who said that plans are generally useless, but planning is essential.

He sees the whole practice as wildly inefficient when he could design something across a handful of stores that got all the results they would need in a few weeks.

AW, we talked a bit about this silliness in the MR thread and, by acclaim, the winning comment is in the sidebar. No idea who this babe is, but she's publicly made a complete ass of her self.

553 Zero defects, eh?

We're now trying a "zero-bug" policy at work, but what that means in practice is mostly that we decide that things aren't actually bugs and close the reports as "Won't Fix".

Yes, I was a workaholic perfectionist (80 - 100 hours weeks) who burned out every couple years, quit, vowed I'd change careers ... and then kept going back.

Somebody finally convinced me (at age 40) to do so, and I subsequently got a wife and a life: "A workaholic is like an alcoholic -- they're running away from something."

But I did roll out a number of systems, when I could fully code them (back in the minicomputer and mainframe days, on Tandem systems), that had zero defects and bugs on Day One. Zero ambiguity in what the customer specs (that I wrote) were and how they were ultimately implemented.

554 I have always thought it should be 12-0 to convict but only 10-2 to acquit. This is a perfect example of why.

I absolutely disdain the entire process of deliberations. Now we've got self-appointed lawyers in that room trying to convince each other.

Put 'em in their own rooms until they write down their own verdict in a sealed envelope that only they control. Once they've all got an envelope ready to go - each juror directly places their envelope in an empty, see through tumbler. Give it a few spins, and open them one by one.

FWIW - I am definitely the guy that would tell KarenForman "Not guilty, and blow it out your See You Next Tuesday ass". Have received a few jury notices - never had to sit on one. Never wanted to, either. I'll try to disqualify myself. Won't be hard.

I was a PE major and even we were required to take classes on how much "create" posters, bulletin board, collages, etc. The elementary ed. majors would spend hours upon hours on that stuff.

558 Biden is in the 30s approval. Does that stop Dems from pushing through their agenda? Fuck no.

One reason they want to tank the economy is to pass a new $3 Trillion Economic Recovery Plan. It's wash-rise-repeat with the Tax and Spend Democrats.

My wife is an immigrant. I was explaining things in this country to her.

She was surprised to find out that we're really not racist....but the divide between libs and conservatives in this country....shocked her.

I'd say this, there are probably too many who don't want to serve on a jury that would actually make good jury members. So we don't really get the best people, and then we complain about the juries.

What's made so clear, by the setting, is that these are not the very best dancers in the world. And yet they are talented far above lesser humans. There's so much talent out there.

564 Sometimes in jury selection, the Defense and the Prosecution are allowed "x number" of rejections of jurors. Maybe the Defense used up all their juror rejection numbers and these were the LEAST objectionable people left in the pool of jurors.

565 "Did Degas ever paint a portrait? His lighting here is like he's purposely avoiding having to render a face."

Degas' early paintings are quite conventional, more like those of Manet than Monet. He spent some time in New Orleans, and his painting of the cotton exchange could have been done by any number of talented but middle-of-the-road 19th-century artists. The Art Institute of Chicago has several portraits by him, including a dual portrait of his uncle and the uncle's young daughter, which are quite well done - not quite Sargent-quality, but good.
