The $1.75 Trillion Cup of Coffee Cafe

Big dog herds a small child, to the child's great frustration.

Dog tears apart papers and makes a mess, but damn, do I admire his honesty.

A very colorful congregation of golden koi and ducks.

Cat uses the landscape to his tactical advantage.

As does this cat.

And this cat uses the environment for purposes of seduction.

Quokka enjoying pets.

Turtle Triple-A is on their way!

This dog is enjoying a summer drive.

This dog knows exactly what he wants, and he knows exactly how to get it.

Inman: BLM gives back. "This is how CNN covers looting," he adds.

He playcalls a mentally ill teen announcing xer neopronouns.

A rando on the street steps up to a cop and challenges him.

Did this guy train his dog for this agility contest, or did they just both wander in off the streets because it was raining?

Next door idiot feeds/attracts ferals. Of course, they attack any of the neighbor's nice cats, spray everything and eat all the birds. Oh, and shit in my vegetable garden. The guy puts kibble piles everywhere (I hate people that move from the city to the burbs), so cats aren't the only thing coming around.

At one point he'd gotten one that could be handled, and then he was coming into my backyard looking for it because it was sicky-poos and "hiding". (probably feline leukemia). And since he puts piles of kibbles in front of my mailbox, it got hit by a car. All of a sudden it wasn't his cat any longer. Had to call animal control after I saw him drive back and forth ignoring it. Time to get a Havahart.

He should be careful. We have them around here. I live next to conservation land and I see them from time to time.

When they are alone they are pretty cowardly if you hold your ground. When they are in a pack they get more aggressive. A local got bit last Spring when she tried to rescue her dog from a pack of 3. The dog did not survive.

POM pepper spray. I think a 3 pack is under $40. Give some away. I always carry some when I'm out and about. That'll stop them cold. https://get-pom.com/ I keep one in my car as well - sadly Santa Clara CA is a "shall not issue, GFY" county and the Sheriff is a leftist fruit.

It's bad enough news when a single stray starts ignoring humans, but as whig says - a pack is extremely bad news.

Occasionally we'll get one wandering the neighborhoods - I assume a juvenile male, I'll see him for a few days and he'll split. Luckily, the next door idiot hasn't noticed or no doubt he'd be putting Dog Chow out for it.

I don't know what it is - maybe the giant oak in my front yard, but my house is the party pad for turkeys and deer. The fucking birds go on the roof to sun themselves, so it sounds like a bunch of day workers at 5am stomping around. Then they'll flutter down and work the lawn.

The deer come and hang out on the front lawn under the tree all night. Unfortunately, there's deer shit everywhere and they're killing the lawn. Mom takes her fawn and beds down nearly every night. I should probably get one of those motion-sensor sprinklers. I've used the deer scent chase, but it's only good for 24-48 hours. Luckily, there's nothing much for them to eat out front except the lawn. All the other neighbors? Nothing.

I'm probably just lucky, but I've never met a Jack I liked. No doubt they're great - they're not short on personality. But the 2 I've known personally were neurotic AF (gotta blame the humans on that though). One would attack any dog it saw at the dog park, regardless of size. Wound up getting stitches almost monthly.

Friend's boss always brought his to work. The dog (I kid you not) could get up on its front paws, and drag its ass along the wall, about 18" up, leaving a trail of shit. A circle of feces in the office. And you couldn't leave anything where it could get to it, because it would piss all over it. I can see why he hated that thing, luckily I only saw the results.

In my line of work I see dogs all the time, and in 18 years only had trouble twice. The one time I got properly mauled (as in broke the skin) was a pack of chihuahuas. I'm not too keen on those things either. But I have met a couple of cute ones.

There was a decline in diversity in a lot of families where one or two species out of a bunch died out before the final blast. This could make things more fragile due to nasty things like vulcanism/meteors.

I am a bit suspicious of the attempts to tie every blip in the species curve to some un-natural disaster, and the warming religion just makes it worse as every paper must play homage to climate change.

I think a big problem with Jacks is people underestimate their energy level. I did. I see a small dog and I think, ok, small dog. Jacks are big dogs in everything but size. And they are tough as nails.

My folks had a farm and my mom raised horses so he was out with her pretty much all day. We had a rat problem in the barn before the Jack. After he arrived we didn't. At all. One day a Doberman that belonged to the farmer up the road made the mistake of wandering into the barn. The Jack kicked the crap out of him. Really. Not because he was mean, because they are very protective of their owner and this dog was my mom's dog. He was just on guard duty.

They used to be used in fox hunts. They would ride with the hunt master and when the hounds would run the fox to ground the Jack was released to go down the hole and grab the fox.

And yes, Jacks have no idea they're not very large, and smart enough that the owners had better be willing to invest the time. Otherwise you've got a wild indian. I think too many go for the cute little dog first, and then have no idea what to do with them afterwards. I did know one guy that had a carpet he strapped to his motorcycle tank, and his Jack would sit and ride on that with its paws up on the bars back in college. Goggles and everything.

Basically Lindsey Buckingham was emotionally forced into it by Mick Fleetwood, et al. He sorta/kinda got revenge though: he insisted everyone record their vocals in a haphazard tape studio he had set up in his bedroom, which was especially awkward for Stevie Nicks.

She responded by breaking into Lindsey's liquor cabinet and drinking everything she could get her hands on, while waiting for her turn. Most of her takes were unusable, she was so drunk, she herself admits.

234 Fleetwood Mac of the Rumours years is widely misunderstood. Buckingham obsessed over Nicks who was to say it gently not a commitment type. The McVies were already busted and Mick was total Woodstock. Buckingham drove the band. It couldn't maintain the drive. 241 Too Bad, oh yeah. There was enough dysfunction in Fleetwood Mac for any other five bands. I think it was an open secret, Mick only wanted Lindsey (who insisted Stevie come with him) to revamp the band and finally start selling serious records.

That wish came true... but their subsequent success was so great, it was too much for anyone in FM to handle. They quite literally cracked up under the strain and pressure.

It's also now an open secret that Lindsey provided about 80% of all the inspiration and songs for FM after he and Nicks joined. That's too much work for just one person out of a group of five. I can understand why he got fed up.

(Legend has it, the album 'Tusk' was the rest of the band literally agreeing to do *anything* Lindsey wanted them to do on tape, to say 'thank you!!" for the massive success of Rumours.)

My sister and her husband live in Southern Ohio, and it is very rural there. The coyotes are up in the hills, and you can here them howl at night, as I have heard them for years (ever since they moved to their present home in 1981).
People there don't mess around. Coyotes are shot on site.

Traditionally you want to sand it down and treat it with linseed oil. Make sure it is boiled (extracted under a vacuum) and not extracted chemically.
The older books for finishing gunstocks say to add some Tung oil to let the oil seep in and dry faster, but t do a traditional treatment, get a wad of fine steel wool and rub a fine layer on the handle and let it dry between coats.

If you use cotton fabric to wipe on or off the oil remember that linseed oil heats up as it cures and it can ignite cloth

You have a squirrel intrusion? A couple weeks ago a chipmunk got into the metal dryer vent hose and couldn't climb back out. I heard it scrabbling down there so we moved the dryer to try to give it a gentler slope to climb back up, but the thing popped off the dryer and it got out into the house. We eventually trapped it and returned it to the wild, but when we reattached the vent the dryer made a weird burning wire smell then shut off. Time to call a professional! He opened it up and found a big stash of peanuts in the dryer, which had jammed the motor! Dryer fixed, and that's the end of putting out peanuts for the squirrels and chipmunks.

300 FWIW

Boiled linseed oil, often written as BLO, is not as it sounds= there's no heating or boiling involved (unlike polymerized linseed oil).

The difference between raw linseed oil and boiled linseed oil is that there are siccatives (metal or petroleum-based drying agents) added to BLO to shorten the time it takes for the oil to cure. This shortened drying time makes boiled linseed oil a more practical finish for woodworking, as raw linseed oil can take weeks or months to fully cure.

Some of the petroleum-based siccative compounds that are added to linseed oil to decrease the drying time are naptha, mineral spirits, and dipropylene glycol monomethyl. Cobalt and manganese are the most common metal siccatives found in boiled linseed oil.

Both linseed oil and tung oil- in their purest forms- are non-toxic, eco-friendly, and food-safe. They're both plant-based oil finishes that penetrate and saturate the wood grain.

Here are some key differences between linseed oil and tung oil:

Linseed oil carries a slight yellow tint, whereas tung oil dries to a clear finish
Tung oil creates a harder, more durable finish than linseed oil
Tung oil is more water-resistant than linseed oil
Raw linseed oil takes significantly longer to cure than pure tung oil
Tung oil is generally more expensive than linseed oil

So, this is nothing more than the typical Democrat Gov't collusion and pay-off play, straight out of the Prog playbook: Outside party colludes with Dem-run FedGov department to get something done that both parties want; outside party sues Government, asking for something the Dem-run Gov't department already agreed to give them (money, a policy change without going to Congress, etc); then, conduct sham negotiations after the Gov't agrees to settle out of court, completing the back-room deal.

395 My dream property has clear fields of fire with plenty of defilade. On a hillside, against a cliff. And a few good neighbors within a couple of miles. And a good place to set up a range. And tear-ass around with a dirt bike.

Wife wants goats, and miniature Scottish cows.

This could work.

396 There is a guy that makes his own backpacking meals. He dehydrates meat for them and mentioned cooking skinless chicken breasts in a pressure cooker to break down the fibers. Then you break it all up and it dehydrates nicely. I might give that a try if I can unpack the dehydrator. My canner is in that trunk too.

399 A little late to the party but both linseed oil and tung oil are oxidizing oils that polymerize themselves over time. Non-oxidizing oils do not form polymers-eg like olive oil.

There is a true boiled linseed oil which is where the term comes from but it is hard to get--it is baked in the absence of oxygen to prevent fire. That has no heavy metal drying agents--in today's language, it is called polymerized linseed oil and dries about as fast as the stuff with drying agents. Raw linseed oil takes a substantial amount of time to dry as noted above as in weeks along with the reek. In Walnut, linseed oil brings out the red tint as it oxydizes. Tung oil was used due to a shortages of all sorts of materials during WWII as an alternative stock finish. Apply with very thin coats and hardens nicely but doesn't bring out wood grain as much as linseed.

Tom's Mix is some good stuff as is pine tar which is useful for birch finishes of Scandi stocks. Renaissance Wax is the pure stuff used for archival storage in museums and suitable for both metal and wood protection.

404 You can also use a thermal box for making yogurt too.

406 Oh, and if you apply natural oils like linseed or tung, also apply them inside stock recesses as well including the bedding for the receiver and barrel. Those areas are subject to synthetic gun oils which can damage wood grain over time. Sealing these areas with natural oils retards the damage of synthetic petroleum oils from the action.

FWIW, US and UK Military used to submerge the rifle stocks in linseed or tung for a fairly long time then set them out to dry over weeks.

Step 2. Load the guns and all available magazines for those guns.

Step 3. Get as many well-armed friends as you can gathered for the trip.

Posted by: G'rump928(c) at October 28, 2021 08:44 PM (yQpMk)

Common fuel is convenient, yes. But if you begin running out, which amenities will you forego first?

Me? Diesel generator, with a gasoline job as backup. Space heating, wood furnace, stove, or fireplace. Wood cookstove for months when you need interior heat, too. Kerosene fridge, which would work fine on diesel. Lamps? I'd use 12-volt LED lighting, powered by a solar panel and a fairly small battery bank. Solar is a good fit for small loads like that, PITA to run your whole house on it.
