Moar Humor

A minister dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who’s dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket, and jeans.
Saint Peter addresses this guy, “Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?”

The guy replies, “I’m Joe Cohen, taxi-driver, of New York City.”

Saint Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the taxi-driver, “Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

The taxi-driver goes into Heaven with his robe and staff, and it’s the minister’s turn. He stands and booms out, “I am Joseph Snow, pastor of Saint Mary’s for the last forty-three years.”

Saint Peter consults his list. He says to the minister, “Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

“Just a minute,” says the minister. “That man was a taxi-driver and he gets a silken robe and golden staff. How can this be?”

“Up here, we work by results,” says Saint Peter. “While you preached, people slept; while he drove, people prayed.”

I was raised on a fruit farm. We had a barn full of apples, so the worst Halloween handouts were apples. The best were home made popcorn balls, and home made caramel apples. The caramel made the apples an acceptable treat.

I don't get a huge amount of trick or treaters, so I make up cellophane treat bags to hand out.

I imagine some kids will try to go out tomorrow night, only to be disappointed because the majority of town will be at evening church services/reluctant to celebrate Halloween on a Sunday. Assistant directors with awful safety records. Apparently the guy that gave Baldwin the gun is known as dangerous according to some claims.

But really I think at this point we can take the plywood liberal hatred of gun in a similar manner to liberal women's opinions of men. Just as they think ask men are rapists because the liberal men they are around are so the conservative men must be even worse! Guns must be a dangerous threat that needs to be banned because they assume everyone handles them the same way they do on set.

NaCly, well, a 50 plus year run was pretty damn good. I don't have a single bad memory from there. John brought in an old black chef from Louisiana to update and expand the Cajun menu. I used to buy him a beer or 3 sitting at the bar, talking recipes and cooking with him. Learned a lot. Raise your glass to hibachi hut, an honored institution from God knows what whacked out 60's hippie bar to many many many years as an insider bar... I doubt I shall know it's equal in what few years I have left.

Back in the Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia, we kids would rustle up several ears of field corn, shuck them, then run around after dark throwing handfuls of hard corn at peoples' houses. We'd soap windows and teepee trees. Nobody out here in Nebraska has ever heard about Mischief Night. It's very sad that Detroit took a bit of harmless fun and turned it into license to burn everything down -- without the normally accompanying riot.

277 Jeeze, I hate that! Then you have to stand around while they page someone to check the price, try to describe the item over the phone to the guy back in the millwork department, and maybe, if your lucky, they get it figured out in less than fifteen minutes.

If I were King of Retail, I would empower the checkout people to just say to the customer "Sorry, this is missing the price. How does fifty cents sound?", and move on.
Posted by: a.moron at October 30, 2021 10:05 PM (F6Xpw)

It wasn't that bad. She handed me off to her cow-worker, who looked the item up on the HD website, and determined its price to be 2.98, which I knew was correct, and I was out the door in 2 minutes.

When Admiral Hyman G. Rickover (then a captain) started his program to create nuclear-powered submarines, Carter wanted to join the program and was interviewed and selected by Rickover.

Carter was promoted to lieutenant and from 3 November 1952 to 1 March 1953, he served on temporary duty with the Naval Reactors Branch, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Washington, D.C., to assist "in the design and development of nuclear propulsion plants for naval vessels"

From 1 March to 8 October 1953, Carter was preparing to become the engineering officer for USS Seawolf (SSN-575), one of the first submarines to operate on atomic power. However, when his father died in July 1953 Carter resigned from the Navy and returned to Georgia to manage his family interests.

Yeah, that was me. Using an X-link BTTN box. Which I'm using now. I wired the new house for network and phone. Cat 6 for the ethernet, and Cat 5e for the phones (although I can easily switch then around) if I needed more network jacks). The BTTN has a regular phone input, and will translate pulse dialing to touch-tone. I put the rotary phones on another pair.

The BBTN will also, via bluetooth, connect to up 3 cell phones, and you can use the rotary (or any standard phone) through the cell phone.

I had a candlestick phone connected to Verizon's network for a while. Never did buy the little kit to convert rotary to DTMF tones, though, because I found an old touch tone phone at Goodwill for $10.00.

Indeed. And what this tells me is that is the final analog end stage of all the modern devices that is crap. I got the X-link BTTN box to handle the pulse to touchtone conversion, since VoIP devices don't recognize pulse dialing. Or not officially, as I later found it.

Spectrum's (Charter, I still call them, although they want to be called Spectrum now) modem (combo cable modem with voice service, called an MTA adapter -- you have to use Charter's own modems for voice, they won't allow you to run your own for voice) actually does recognize pulse dialing!

Turns out that many such devices do, but they are undocumented. The reason is they don't want to document it, and then be expected to support all sorts of old pulse equipment.

But I tested one of my dial phones straight on modem's output, and it worked. I remember finding some site that listed all the various modems and VoIP devices that included this undocumented pulse dial support.

I imagine one reason would be the expense of upgrading the POTS network to handle the additional bandwidth that would be needed. Voice doesn't take much, since I think it's sampled at about 8kHz. The sample rate for a CD is about 44kHz for comparison.

DSL puts much higher frequencies on the copper pairs than were originally intended. It can work and work well for short runs, but not at all for some of the long, old rural loops.

I forget what the length limit is. And also, you have to put a filter on the voice circuits. This is to kill any possible interference between the voice and the data -- it can go both ways. High frequency noise can be generated on the voice circuit. And crap from the data signals can come through on the voice side.

512 Publis,
We had a freak 3 day record high temp run in the PNW, along with a windstorm. The power went out, the RCO(Remote Central Office) went on to generator power. The cooling system on the RCO generator was not adequate for the temperature and blew its coolant and the generator burned up. While it was dying, and dropping in voltage and freq, it burned out the little 50 year old circuit cards for each twisted pair. They no longer could get battery or dial tone. They could still get "Ring" so that your wire line could ring, but you could not answer or talk. While this was going on, DSL still worked without interruption.

Posted by: ChrisP at October 30, 2021 11:55 PM (hSZDT)

513 AOP. If you want to run copper for a clean signal for about 3 miles, you've gotta buy the good stuff. Three twinned twisted pairs, wrapped inside of a heavy copper sheath, (heavier than aluminum foil), which is filled with a silicone gel specified as to render corrosion as "out of the question". Which is all then sealed into an extra dense polyurethane outer sheathing.

It's one grade removed from being "submersible". Gulf coast marinas used it often, as it was proof against salt-air and spray for a decade or more. Be sure to No-Ox the juncture box connections, too. It'll carry bandwidth, both ways.

There is still the old copper pair cable POTS network around here. Up until a couple years ago, my folks were still on the old POTS network (and pulse dialing would still work, and has to, by law). We hesitated switching over to Charter's voice, even though it was much cheaper, because of the power outage problem. But now, my mother has a cell phone and so can use that, and we terminated the old POTS line.

In the old days, the cable system would go down if the power went off. The amplifiers and repeaters that keep the signal going have to have power injected every so often down the line. But then, due to the voice service and so forth, they started installing battery backups in the power injector boxes along the run.

Now, if the power goes off, and you put the cable modem on a UPS, you'll still have phone. Which is the setup I have here.

Now, how long those battery backups for the system last, I don't know. You'll see these power injector devices on the poles every so often. Large cabinet, with an electric meter feeding it.

POTS copper lines don't have the bandwidth capacity for that. That's why your AOL connection topped out at 56 kbps. It would probably take a ridiculous amount of money and effort to convert them at everyone's house. That's kind of what most people have high speed internet for anyway, so there's really no point to doing it now.

523 Well, I had an interesting evening. Sipping my second glass of wine. Wife's phone rings, it's the neighbor lady down the street she had suffered a stroke a few weeks back, and is at home recovering. Her two dogs are outside, apparently fly fighting a coyote. Could we come over and get them.
So, we jump in the car and run over there. Pull up to the house, hear nothing as we are walking in. So, we knock on the door, she lets us in. I take my flashlight and head to the back door, and as I approach it, both dogs come running in through the doggie door, both bleeding. So, we start looking over the dogs, I took the flashlight and scoured the fenced back yard. No coyotes in sight.
I come back in, and as we are standing around discussing what to do about these lightly bleeding dogs, dog #1 just tears into dog #2, latching onto her neck and refused to release.
I picked up dog #1 by the scruff of the neck. We were all screaming at the dog to let go. I put my legs around the aggressor dogs chest and started squeezing, and eventually she released. Dog #2 is now bleeding profusely from the jugular.
So, we grab some paper towels and start to try to top the bleeding.

In the old days, back in the 70s when my memory starts, the POTS network was long runs of copper pair. We were a little ove 5 miles from town, where the central office was located. All the pairs went back to this CO. Line length could run well over that. 10 miles, maybe 20 miles.

Now, and I was talking to a phone lineman a few years who explained it, that old POTS network is basically a literal "last mile" (or two).

They get it on fiber as quick as they can. They've laid a underground fiber network all around over the years. Every so often they have interface unit, it's basically a big cabinet which you see on the side road every once in a while.

All the local pairs from a length of pieces of that old POTS network come into the cabinet and are run through equipment which digitizes the signals and puts on the fiber network.

Problem we ran into is that Copper lines end up with micro breaks in them due to the wind making them move.... act like mini capacitors which end up creating impedance.

Only way to fix that is to replace the lines... which is cost prohibitive.

There is a woman at the desk inside, and Hawkspouse knocks on the door and she comes over. "We are not allowing anyone inside"... blah blah COVID blah. I'm like, OK, this dog is bleeding out. You want to carry it in? She says she'll go get a cart. She does, I put the dog down, with the towel wrapped around its neck. She comes back with the cart, takes the dogs leash, sees the dog can walk, and just walks her into the back.

Before I was born, they went underground with the POTS lines around here. At one time, well before, they were on the power poles.

At some time, I think in the '80s, they upgraded the lines, and I remember them digging and installing new underground phone cable. I forget how many pair it was that went by the house. I think maybe 100 pair.

546 SO, they hand me a clip board to fill out a bunch of crap I don't know about this dog. I gave them what I could. When I passed off the clip board, she says basically, sit tight, we'll get back to you. So I brought the car around, because it's getting cold. We went into the laundromat next door to get cleaned up. Looking in the mirror, I looked like I had murdered a couple people. Blood all over my face, hands and clothes. I did what I could.
Anyway, we sat outside for probably two hours, and finally I went back to the door to see what's up. Was told they had a compression bandage on her, and might evaluate her in another hour.. knowing I had, at a minimum, a cat outside in Coyote territory, I told her I was going to go get my own pets out to bed, and I'd be back. Drove home.
Did have one dog outside, and the cat, everybody fine. Put them all to bed, and the neighbor called to say her daughter would take over the dog watch. So now I'm drinking wine. Last I heard, dog is doing OK.

That reminds me. Back in the early '90s I think it was, local town (Ft. Inn) ran natural gas line out here. My father decides he wants a gas line run and we put in gas water heater.

Well, to that, they have to cross under the road. They put the gas line on the opposite side of the road, to avoid the POTS cable running on the near side. When they run the lateral to the house, they get someone out to mark the underground POTS lines.

The hit and cut it anyway, knocking out the phones all over the place. I remember watching some lineman splice those multipair cable back together. That was not a trivial task. The contractor paid through his ass for that.

I managed to crawl out of bed Election Day afternoon, feeling very shaky, and drove to the nearby polling place (Arlington, VA, by the way). I was feeling guilty about possibly infecting other voters until I saw that 90% of the cars in the lot had Mondale bumper stickers, so I thought "Fuck 'em" and went in and voted for Reagan, then home and back to bed.

I was taking my future bride back to ISU on I-55 to Normal. Car dies on the interstate, we had to walk across a field to get to the nearest farmhouse. The farmwife (no disrespect w/ that term) let us come in and call for a tow truck to haul us into town.

So we settled down w/ she and her granddaughter and watched Archie Bunker while waiting for the tow truck. Unfortunately this was the episode where it is revealed Edith's cousin is a lesbian. Man that was an uncomfortable time, like suspended in space...nothing was spoken.

605 Well, I can say with confidence that this hasn't been the Best October forever. Far from it.

Earlier this month, the fridge shit the bed. Since it gave me a bit of early warning, I managed to get a new one in place without too much of a food loss.

But then yesterday, the upright freezer decided to pull the same move, with less warning. Buh bye, $500 worth of frozen meats. Fuckity.

So I spent the day hauling out stinky spoiled meat, and one stinky freezer. Did I mention that this shit was stinky??? My yard is starting to resemble an appliance graveyard. Fuuuuuck. Never trust a 20+ year old appliance, or a Democrat.

Speaking of HIPPA, I was reading on Denninger's forum. Some guy, speaking of the ClotShot(TM) "mandates" from his employer, said he just kept refusing to disclose his vaccination status. 'Cause HIPPA -- you can't make me disclose that.

Deadline came, and he said HR sent him something, that basically said, "Well, we can't find anyone to replace you, so you can keep working, but you have to have Covid test every week!"

OSHA has not issued shit. It's all just a press release to say there's gonna be a federal mandate, but there isn't. This is just cover for the employers to demand you get the vax.

Call their bluff. There is no actual mandate, and it they issue one, it can be challenged in court six ways to Sunday.
