Nancy Pelosi Signals Surrender on $3.5 Trillion Spending Plan; Will Reduce It to Appease Sinema and Manchin

Screenshot (586).png

The idea of reducing the number of years the budget covers has been proposed by the progressives before. This is a fake reduction of the spending amount -- instead of spending, say, $350 billion for ten years, they'll say they're spending $350 billion for seven years.

Net "savings"? Over a billion dollars.

That's obviously just an accounting trick.

But she now signals she might have to actually reduce some of the proposed trillions of welfare spending.

Why the shift? Probably one or more of three things:

1, Biden is losing support and needs something the media can call a "win." His handlers might have also realized that he's losing a lot of support with independents, and cannot afford continuing to side completely with The Squad on every issue.

2, Manchin and Sinema have signaled they are not backing down. Sinema, for example, seems no longer willing to even talk with Biden and Pelosi. She says she sometimes doesn't even bother returning the White House calls. So their Terror Campaign against her failed, and they now have to negotiate.

3, Charles Schumer attacked Republicans so nastily over their willingess to bail the Democrats out of their debt ceiling problem by punting the issue until December that Mitch McConnell declared that Republicans will offer no further help to Democrats, and that they'll have to raise the debt limit entirely by Democrat votes. This means the Democrats will need Manchin's and Sinema's vote for raising the debt limit -- and that further empowers them to demand concessions.

This is no great victory, though. The progressives set the idea of $3.5 trillion in new welfare (after trillions in covid related welfare spending). So now they'll back down to, say, $2.5 trillion.

That is still $2.5 trillion in new welfare spending, on top of the previous trillions.

8 They need something before January so that Biden can tout it in his SotU.

We'll see if the Squad plays along. Right now there seems to be a three-way battle in the party between the Old Guard (Pelosi, Schumer), the Squad, and Manchin/Sinema, who are flexing their muscle.

9 OK, big question:

What else winds up being 're-done' in the Bill besides the amount spent?

Do all the new regulatory bullshits stay in the bill, like the cryptocurrency regulations and tax regulations et cetera?

ace I know you didn't mean that in the way some might read it, and you clarified towards the end of the post that all of this is "no victory".

Meanwhile the Trump Anomaly (it increasingly appears that's all it was) looks more and more sadly a lonely outlier.

The level of "thinking" about politix and Beltway process remains so brain-dead, ignorant, and clueless that forcing the Dems to raise the debt ceiling by themselves is seen as *any* kind of political event, at all. (narrator: it isn't) 100 senators voting for the debt increase, or 51, makes no difference (nor probably should it) to 98% of voters, of all stripes. If they even hear of/understand what it is.

76 There's another factor (just as bad) besides the desire for an applause line in Biden's SOTU speech, and it is the growing fear about the midterm elections. Democrat consultants are telling them that the only way they can turn it around is to start showering free money on all of their "interest groups" who are becoming disenchanted. (like black voters, of course) So they're desperate to start pumping out as much free money as they can as quickly as possible, because they believe they'll buy votes that way.

They're wrong in almost every part of this estimation, but that doesn't stop them from believing it.

77 Manchin's number is more along the lines of 1.5 trillion since he's wants notionally increased revenues (taxes) to match the spending and even with things like dynamic scoring and assumed better collection by the IRS (due to increased funding levels), it's tough to squeeze out much more than that without destroying yourself politically (i.e., substantially raising tax rates on nearly everyone not just billionaires). He could always cave in the end, but he certainly doesn't have to if he doesn't want to ... and if he wanted to, might as well done so before now.

105 There's another factor (just as bad) besides the desire for an applause line in Biden's SOTU speech, and it is the growing fear about the midterm elections.

Posted by: Tom Servo at October 12, 2021 12:31 PM (trdmm)

It's not just an applause line. They need Biden gone so that they can try to staunch the bleeding. Passing the bill allows him to claim that his Build Back Better plan is working and that it's time to step aside and turn over the reins to Harris. The narrative will be that he successfully saved the country at a terrible cost to his health. If the bill fails, then Biden is seen as a failure, which not only makes it hard to get him to resign, but will tarnish the rest of the party.

108 " suddenly, a "budget" over a trillion per year is no big deal. They're literally drunk teenagers with dad's credit cards."

they are adding trillions to the debt, beyond what is already budgeted ... which already includes annual auto-increases. When they previously claimed to cut anything, it was an increase, but a little less than the planned increase. ...

And some of the emergency trillions, from what I read, are not even counted ... $5-7T to save the markets ... out of thin air? And we don't count ? $200+T in unfunded liabilities (unless maybe they can kill off those over 70 somehow)

Posted by: Darrell Harris at October 12, 2021 12:29 PM (CQcWG)

Oh it will be undone, but not politically - it will be undone by events. Inflation just seems bad, it's about to kick into overdrive; I was just looking at serious estimates of $200 per bbl oil in just 6 months. (double the previous record high)

The problem with printing "trillions" is that it all becomes worthless quickly, and thus does nothing except create chaos at all levels. What they're doing will be undone, but sadly the country will be wrecked in the process. I think we're already too far along for there to be any other endpoint.

But the pols at the trough have grown the debt so big that they can't afford to service it if the feds raise interest rates by much at all.

I suppose they'll hope that companies are forced to raise wages and prices without a federal interest rate increase, and they'll probably raise tax rates as well, ignoring the fact that people will reach a point of "screw this, I'm not going to bust my ass for uncle Sam to take such a big slice to give to the people they encourage to by layabouts with excessively generous welfare programs"

I am sure it's just a coincidence that the patent on it is about to expire. Remember how the horrible ozone hole that would give us all cancer and not close for 200 years made it a national crisis that the patent expiring R-12 had to be replaced? BTW the hole closed up. You stated "Guess I'm not brave and tough and principled." And you are right. Those who are standing up to the mandates at the expense of the consequences to their livelihoods are brave, tough and principled.

My point is that very few of us are brave, tough and principled when faced with the decisions of losing our livelihoods and/or the livelihoods of our families. And that's the situation in every Western nation right now. This is reality for every single one of us. We are all going to face the same decision you had to face and the majority of us are going to make - or have already made - the same decision you made.

Here is what gets me. If gratuitously adding trillions upon trillions of new debt doesn't materially change the strength of the dollar against other currencies, then doesn't it mean that other currency issuing entities also inflating similarly?

For example, in China they are having a banking meltdown at the exact same time Europe is issuing out massive amounts of new debt at the exact same time that The Party is wanting to issue out new debt.

It costs Russia nothing to suck up to China and get in their good graces by pitching some anti-US rhetoric, because Putin knows that Biden won't do diddly squat about it. Meanwhile, all of Europe is lining up to be Russia's bestest customer this winter, as they run out of Energy and Putin is the closest, most available supplier. 262 For the record, I have been an utter mess for weeks pondering what I am going to do when faced with this decision by my employer. I have been unemployed in the past and I almost did not survive it. 2 years from DEC 2008 through DEC 2010. Went through my entire 401(k), my entire savings, lost my home and was set to be completely broke by the end of JAN 2011. I was broken and ready to kill myself from the stress, the depression, the loneliness and the uncertainty of my future at age 35.

Miraculously, I landed a job (which I maintain today) in DEC 2010. I built myself back up and am in a good situation in my career and financial situation again. But I remember those 2 years and am deathly afraid to go through that again, especially in today's environment where hiring is limited and likely everyone will require "vaccine" mandates.

I am dreading being faced with the decision. I want to think I would fight it, especially since I can survive financially for about 2 years without income. But I know I won't survive mentally or emotionally in unemployment again.

There are things in here designed to reshape our country. Debt may be the the least of our worries as we wake up to things like meat and dairy-killing methane taxes (you WILL be vegan and eat the bugs!), states-rights-killing national policies, and location-tracking mileage taxes.

Many a year that I lived in AZ there was heavy traffic south out of Colorado and headed to Flagstaff.

When they get big snow years, the conditions there are amazing.

My wife and I have talked about this specifically, it's a very good story that isn't widely known. God does not rebuke Elijah, doesn't tell him he's wrong, doesn't give him a pep talk. Instead, he just says (paraphrased) "yes, I know you're down and a lot of bad things have happened. But stick around a little bit more - because I'm about to do some things that nobody on this world will ever see coming!"

and then he does, and then Elijah is taken up to heaven without dying first.

I still wanna know who thought it was a good idea for this couple, a high-strung girl with OCD and anxiety disorders, and a guy with autism and who-knows-what other emotional disorders, who were already having fights, to go on an extended road trip together in a small van, where they'd be forced to be together 24/7, in a very cramped space, in the hot summer months.

That's the kind of trip that would strain even a very stable, well-adjusted couple, which these two clearly were not.

Did no one in their families say "hey, wait a minute, this may not be the best idea for you two"?
