Ace of Spades Pet Thread

(This is so our house)

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thank you for stopping by. Why not stay awhile, kick back with your friends and enjoy the world of animals.

***

A Little of This. A Little of That.

From our pal Doof. 25 Calm Dog Breeds That Make the Best Couch Potato Companions">I'm not sure I would share a couch with a St. Bernard or a Great Dane.

The following was submitted to us by Roger. AoS has had differences with Karl Rove. But at this time, let's unite on our love of dogs. Why God created dogs.

I've lost a couple of young dogs over the years. I think those losses hurt more. But, I could be wrong. Just never easy to lose one of God's creatures.

Meet The PetMorons

100_1101 (2).jpg

Hi Mis Hum,
Just thought I would send in a picture of our nitwits. They have been in before separately Gigi, our big girl on the bottom was found after being thrown away in a box in Phoenix at 3.5 months old. We rescued her at 5.5 months old. Wiley was in a shelter in San Antonio from 3 months old until 7.5 months old before he was sent to a shelter in Phoenix where we scooped him up. Wiley was last in the pet thread a year ago when he got bit by a rattlesnake. Gigi just had her Fifth birthday and the day after we celebrated Wiley's second year with us. They have become inseparable in the two years. As you can see in the picture Wiley (aka Littleman) has no boundaries. We love them to pieces. - Wee Kreek Farm Girl

It is really easy to see how you love them to pieces. Awesome pals you have there. And I owe you an apology. Somehow your email ended up in spam. And I'll be honest, I rarely ever check that. I apologize and will attempt to be better at the looking into the spam folder.

Harley 1999 (1).jpg

Hi -

I thought September would be a good time to send a pic of our dog Harley (predecessor of Henry who has appeared here a couple of times). Harley was a rescue pup who ended up being a small version of a black lab complete with soft mouth. He loved fruit and would grab a ripe fig right off the tree Our sweetheart crossed the rainbow bridge in 2012 at age 14.We still miss that little guy.

As always, thanks for the pet thread - it's vital to my sanity these days!- Kay

Oh what a wonderful little guy. He had a great life with you. I know as you still miss him after 9 years. Thank you for sharing and thank you for your complimentary words.

Big Poodle on Couch (1).jpg

Attached is a photo of Big Poodle. He has graced the Pet Thread several times but I thought I'd submit this one because it is cold and rainy on this last weekend of summer in the PNW. He is on the couch during the Nebraska-Oklahoma game and he clearly he is convinced that this is the next "game of the century." I post as ptleahy and the highlight of my week is the World Famous Pet Thread. Thanks for all you do. - ptleahy

I'm thinking Big Poodle should have made the top 25 Couch Potatoes. Great photo of a well spoiled dog. Thanks for sharing and enjoying the Pet Thread.

After losing a dog on Christmas I wanted something that was low maintenance.

It's a TX5000 hybrid bee and they handled the summer heat quite well.-- These Fish Sticks are Hard as Tits

I'm just spit ballin' here, but I'm guessing that bees don't tug on the heart strings like a pooch. Sorry to hear about your loss at Christmas. If your new PetMorons produce honey let us know. Thanks for sharing today.

Call me Max is just a lurker. I just lost my beautiful stupid sweet goober Jethroe. A storm blew through and took down my gate. I let the dogs out not knowing. He got into the road and got hit. I heard him scream. The driver didn't even slow down. I had to put him down. One of the hardest things I have ever done. Just wanted to put his face out there one more time. I really love reading the Pet Thread. Thank you

Oh Max, so sorry to hear of your Jethroe's passing. Please don't beat yourself up about the fence issue. Condolences to you and be well.

Hello,

You’ve featured my three little furbabies before on the Pet Thread. But if you are ever hard up for pics, I have three more to share. All three of my kitties seem to adore the AoSHQ and each one has a favorite topic.

Kaylee the Calico Kitty Cat (the cutest little cat of them all) spends a lot of time on the ONT.

Jasmine, the little gray tabby, is fond of the Saturday afternoon Chess Thread.

And my original kitty, the one and only Penny, is devoted to the Pet Thread, as is only fitting.

Enjoy! - Lord (now “Perfessor” Squirrel

Excellent looking kittehes. They seem adept at getting around the AoSHQ. And how can you not love cats who love The ONT & AoS Pet Thread. True Morons. Thanks for sharing today.

Dini as Grumpy Cat (1).jpg

IMG_20210822_193955306 (1).jpg

Misanthropic Humanitarian –

Attached are pictures of Dini (Houdini) the cat, and Fenway our Flat-coat retriever. They both have been on the Pet Thread a couple times.

The first is Dini auditioning to be the new Grumpy Cat.

Fenway is next modeling her new “booties”. She had to have a toe amputated a few months ago and her foot has been sensitive to rough surfaces ever since. We have been working with her to get used to the “booties” and is working well. We’ll be taking her to Acadia National Park in Maine to walk the carriage trails and want to make sure she is comfortable. As she is 11 and really slowing down, this will probably be her last trip up there.

Thanks for doing this thread. Mrs OCiS and I look forward to reading it every week. - Our Country is Screwed

Well Dini is a handsome cat. Good luck on the audition to be Grumpy Cat. Sorry to hear about Fenway's medical condition. Glad to hear the booties are working. Thank you for taking time to contribute today.

Folks, we really appreciate all of the contributions today. You folks make the AoS Pet Thread run. Without your submissions there really isn't a thread.

If you have something you wish to submit that's related to pets or any animal or critter, please contact us at petmorons at gmail dot com.

Have a great week!

We are in Benson Az now and the vet here is working with the vets in Wyoming and Utah to figure it out. Our only problem was we had to wear a mask and speak to the vet thru a window. I put on my sparkly gauze and as I came closer to the window the vet backed up. She seemed to know her stuff but it made me wonder as she backed up farther and farther.

28 I've often wondered about the speed of smell. It seems faster than could be accounted for with say, wind or air movement. Is there some sort of chemical chain reaction we're unaware of?

My girls could certainly differentiate people only food to food that was fair game. Quite often, that fair game food was in a container/wrapper that's identical to all the others. So, it's not like when they hear the can opener, or popping the lid on a flat tin of catfood.

I could open up a wrapper of beef bones out of the fridge, and the second I did so, I'd hear the girls hit the floor from upstairs jumping off the bed, and they'd zoom down the stairs in an instant. Unwrap some fruit or sandwich? Nothing. So if it's the smell, how can it travel that fast? Or can the canine brain determine the shape/size/contents of the object in saran wrap by the sound?

She just wants to play with them, but elder dog wants to eat them, so he follows her around the house at his stately pace, relentlessly. It's a slow-mo car chase complete with twists, turns, and usually some barking by the elder dog. Eventually she drops it and he eats it. I found it easier to adopt my son from Guatemala than to adopt a rescue dog. It's really a proggie thing. They murder babies in the womb but woe to you if you just want to give a dog a nice home.

I sometimes share mine with her, letting her lick it off my fingers. I've lamented the adoption thing here before. In my area (South SF Bay Area), it's either a pittie that has been raised for obvious reasons (one must sign a waiver) or a chihuahua for the same family as an indoor dog to torture. After the covid thing, I started seeing regular dogs, and tried for a few. But they seem to be a bunch of idiots. a month and a half later they tell me the dog isn't available. And here, 4 months later, the same rescue dogs are still listed as available.

I had a breeder contact me recently, unfortunately I didn't catch her VM and missed a puppy by literally hours. Next chance with them is next spring (maybe). Sigh.

Posted by: clutch cargo - processed in a facility that may contain lead at September 25, 2021 02:53 PM (wAnMi)

62 Neighbor's pittie showed up at the door early this morning, barking for her snack. She got Kings Hawaiian Rolls and dog food. I'm not sure they feed her. Next door neighbor feeds her sometimes, too.

Garden kitties are nervous around her, but not usually nervous enough to run away.

Not at all limited by line of sight. That's why I was wondering about some sort of chain reaction. I can see how they could smell it after even 20-30 seconds, but instantly? I'm sure their world of smell makes ours of vision pale by comparison. Something like the world of avatar for the nose.

The way some people treat animals is criminal. The ones that consider themselves animal lovers can be the worst. Sadly, my next door neighbor is a POS "cat lover". Like creepy fixation. He goes out of his way to feed/attract feral cats (city folk of course), going so far as to put food in my yard, and drive around (drunk) at night to try to find/feed them. Of course, they beat up on the pet cats, and - well my vegetable garden has nice soft soil. What really irked me is this clown would actually come in my yard trying to find "his cat", put kibbles on the sidewalk by the mailboxes to attract "his cat" and when "his cat" got run over by a car in front of my house because of his kibble trap, it was no longer "his cat". Some people should stay far, far away from animals. Forever. And now that this guy has murdered one cat, he's still putting kibbles out on the sidewalk for more. Ugh.

87 yeah plenty of the rescues are stupidly picky on adoptions; like it's a good thing for the dogs or cats to be in a crowded rescue facility many extra months waiting for the perfect home. Toby came from the county shelter I think. Not sure, Dad got him. Tommy cat was at the vets office after his owner passed away. When I wanted another cat last winter none of the rescues were allowing visits and I never got a reply to any emails. I started occasionally checking CL and Tux was being re-homed.

90 Fish Sticks, your bees are awesome. I admire anyone who can keep bees. I put out a water feeder for squirrels, and sometimes bees come to it regularly all day. One weekend I spent a lot of time lifting them out of the water tray on the end of a yardstick so they wouldn't drown. Now I just keep a rock in the tray they can climb on.

Darned bird brains

94 Well KT, they are garden dogs when I am in the garden, and when I go in the house so do they. They both understand that I am the food maker in the house so I am extremely fascinating. On another topic, Gigi had a couple of UTI's when she was around 9 months old. She is part Rottweiler and they are prone to them. She had one and then 6 weeks later she had another one. After we finished the second round of antibiotics we started her on chewable cranberry tablets. She gets one in the morning and one at night. She thinks they are treats. She has never had another UTI again.

The best way to get the breed or rescue breed you want, unfortunately is through Facebook. Even if you don't have FB you can set up an account using a nom de plume (wink wink).
That way you can "like" a bunch of rescue groups and breeders on your FB page so you will know immediately when a litter is due, a rescue is available etc.

I got my 2 parti cocker spaniel pups through someone posting in the comments section with pics on one of the breeders page.

LOL, I just checked the SFSPCA, they finally seem to have updated and there's a BUNCH of adorable pups. So, I might give it another shot. It's so depressing though that the ones I applied for took over a month for them to send their form letter they were gone. So I'm looking at possibly November to find out, unless something has changed in a big way. Might be my mistake was following their instructions for "dog of interest" instead of just stating I'm interested, give me a $%&! appointment! Assuming they have the dogs in the same place. 104 Hey, all! Just got back from running errands. A grand bunch of pets this week -- I especially like the big black cat sitting by the computer with the AoS logo right behind him!

This has been both a rough and a good week for chez Wolfus. If you've been around the HQ this week, you'll have read of Chekov, the ailing 14-year-old white-and-black Siberian cat who pretty much crashed and went into shock when Miss Linda, he, his brother Wolf, and I evacuated for Hurricane Ida.

He continued being listless and lethargic, hiding under furniture, when I got home. Desperate, and sure he was going to die, I started feeding him some Friskies wet food. Bit by bit he has pulled out of the state of shock. He's eating as though he just discovered food, walking almost normally, spending time with us and not hiding. As of today, he's not leaping up on anything, but he has come out from the shadow, so to speak. Thanks to all for the good thoughts this week!

109 I get a bunch of bee weeds in the horse paddocks after declaring all out war on the goats heads. Sometimes I think I should get bees, or see if a keeper would like to place a hive close by in the summer but I haven't pursued it. The, presumably, wild bees I get feeding now are very chill when I'm tromping through the bushes looking for burrs that need spraying and with the horses. I have a hesitation that bees might be more aggressive if they had a hive nearby.

It's a mystery what affected him. The emergency vet saw a spike in blood glucose, but that came down in hours, and cats can show that under stress. The vet here gave him an antibiotic -- it couldn't hurt, she said, and she was right -- and more of the appetite stimulant we got from the first shop. I credit that, and the gravy-laden junk food of Friskies, with making Chekov interested in food again. He was never a picky eater, but not a ravenous monster like his adopted brother.

Chekov used to barf every week for a long time, until I got him on the Rx food. Even then he would throw up occasionally. The Pittie is a pretty good girl. I taught her to sit. She steps on our old, blind Chihuahua sometimes, but she's just excited. She has beautiful coloring. Brindle.

Well, sounds like she's lucky she's got you and your neighbor. You can tell all you need to know about people by how they treat their pets. She sounds like a smart girl. Wish you could adopt her. Every pittie I've known has been incredibly sweet and so eager to please. It's a shame they can be used for such awful purposes, but at least it sounds like in her case she's suffering neglect instead of being put in the fighting ring.

My other idiot neighbor (behind me) has a French Bulldog, and they lock it outside in a large chain link fence kennel run at 7am, bring it in at nightfall, nearly every GD day. It barks and howls nonstop, with occasional pauses due to exhaustion. Nothing like getting a little indoor lapdog, and then locking it outside all day. Animal control apparently can't do squat, because they're apparently home most of the time. They just don't care because they're jerks and tune it out. I need 60 acres in the middle of nowhere.

126 Oh, as far as couch potato dogs, I'll second Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. But it's not their proclivity to do so. There's a lot of bird dog in them, and they'd prefer to be running around on the beach chasing gulls. But if you're chilling, they're right there with you. Also for a small dog, they're incredibly quiet. We constantly got comments that people didn't notice our girls if we were at a restaurant or such. Not at all yappy.
