I like this interpretation on Paul. The colors reflect the bleakness of Paul's ministry and the endless trials he went through. His life is written on his face and pose. I also like the subtlety of the swords-his main attribute. Many times in art he is holding them, ready to use them in spiritual battle. Here, they just hang--like an old soldier's trophies.

Beautiful, of course. I mean, it's Rembrandt. But the lighting seems a little weird. There's light from the upper left, presumably sunlight through a window and then there's a source from the lower right, behind the book. It would have to be a candle or oil lamp but doesn't it seem awfully bright? I wonder if it as supposed to be symbolic, maybe something about St. Paul's writing spreading The Light.

Right now we're only singing two verses which I choose because the 94 year old organist (God bless her; She is a gift to the church) has trouble with hand reach for some of the hymns and now she's having eye trouble so FenSpouse downloads all the hymns onto the computer in case she can't play. Sometimes It's appropriate to have two verses and sometimes you can get into the spirit and sing more. Amazing Grace has too many verses, but for people singing this beloved hymn since forever, they usually like singing more than two verses.

Dear God, that such talent ever existed.
The way Rembrandt captures the aged, perhaps exhausted (sword on the wall not at his waist), Paul in his posture and in his face grips the viewer. Even if you don't know the subject, anyone old enough or with a memory of an aged father can identify with the image. But the dark, worn clothing and woodwork, exquisitely detailed, makes the subtle light around him stand out the more. To see what Rembrandt could achieve with such a limited palette is staggering. Since I lack the artistic ability to draw, this image makes me itch for a large format camera and black and white film to try to capture the tonalities Rembrandt achieved. The first is the introduction, the second is the conflict, the third is the climax - where the victory happens and the fourth verse is the resolution. When you skip the third verse, you're skipping the victory. I wonder how that impacts church outlook. And the best verse is generally the third. The thing is, there were few really great, worthy, and memorable songs written in ANY era. Its not just modern times that has so much crap and so little value. There was a host of horrible, cloying, overly romantic "Jesus is my boyfriend" songs written in the late 1800s, for example. Only a tiny handful are worth keeping around.

I had an interesting interaction with Dolley this weekend re: COVID.
We went to the AT&T store to change coverage (didn't happen because Dolley had put a freeze on her credit that she didn't think she needed to unfreeze and by the time we figured it out, the kids didn't want to stay still), and I walked in maskless. She put on a mask, put one on Junior, and she handed me one in the store insisting that I put it on. I refused and put it in my pocket. She hasn't said a word about it since. I've pointed out that our decision makers are ALL acting like we are facing the second coming of smallpox. But the actual death rate from COVID is slightly higher then the "season flu".
Part of it is bad people doing bad things for bad reasons, but I believe another part is people scared into thinking that they have to lie to keep pushing the official line.
