48 This is Rococo, and Fragonard was one of its major artists. I think his work defines the most mature phase of the movement. It's frothy and bubbly. The colors are bright pinks, aquas, and pastels. The subject matter is the past-times of the bored and randy aristocracy.

74 Love letters. How quaint.

Posted by: The Paolo at September 21, 2021 08:51 AM (N/iqz)

75 In French Rococo, a good rule-of-thumb is to not to take the imagery seriously. This isn't a serious style (don't tell the artists that, tho). For example, although a dog is traditionally a symbol of loyalty/fidelity, the style, the culture, her body language, and the position of the dog all hint that there is little or no fidelity in this work. The letter is very likely from a secret lover. Look how she tries to hide it but looks at the viewer with a mischievous grin.

76 touche flounder. ha.

Posted by: 5280 greaser at September 21, 2021 08:51 AM (oSX/P)

77 The subjects of Fragonard's paintings are, like this one, not important but they are pleasant and playful and certainly express what the artist intended. I like the detail in this painting: the clothing, the writing desk, the velvet cushion on the chair. But it is the way the lady looks directly at the viewer, with that knowing smile that makes the image so effective. And there is a bit of humor in the way the puppy also looks at the viewer, mirroring the woman's glance.

It is a fun painting.

So the 7 days of creation happened faster than you think!

The claim, published late Sunday on the militant group's media arm, the Aamaq news agency, signals a growing threat to the Taliban by their long-time rivals.

Which in context is referring to God's perspective and patience and longsuffering toward judgment and destruction, not the literal creation. I think it's a leap to assume an indeterminate period of days just to corroborate evolution, which is usually the point of the argument.

But assuming the seven days of creation are actually 7000 years, that's a really long work week and I can't wait for the weekend. Genesis states evening and morning. Which seems deliberate and specific, there's no reason to dogmatically assume otherwise.

233 48 This is Rococo, and Fragonard was one of its major artists. I think his work defines the most mature phase of the movement. It's frothy and bubbly. The colors are bright pinks, aquas, and pastels. The subject matter is the past-times of the bored and randy aristocracy.

It also inspired many painters of sofa-sized paintings at such fine galleries as Levitz and Bob's Furniture stores. The indistinct brush strokes, garish use of turquoise and pinks and subject matter devoid of any deep meaning.

Which also implies the creation is a myth, because puddles of chemicals evolved into humans. Which means there is no original sin. Which means Christ didn't need to die for the sins of the world. Which means he was crazy or a liar and just a man. Because there is no God. Q.E.D. for the evolutionists.

286 ""the 7 days of creation in Genesis probably weren't 24-hour days." -- That's a pretty dogmatic statement. How do you calculate that?"

my current conclusion is that God is very limited in explaining things to mere humans, and we know many things are clearly figurative. AND we now know more than those humans knew .. so we must read in light of God speaking to men of those early days, in terms of the science and culture they were immersed in.

idk when the earliest writings began, but I also have doubts on Methuselah (and others) living 900+ years. My guess is there are other humans at the time, somewhere put into the bloodlines? Flood covering the highest mountains? We see through a glass darkly ...

There aren't a lot of good actors/actresses of any race. Most films are crap. What we remember from "the golden age", whatever you label that as being, are the semi-decent ones.

I am not black. I am not likely to find interest in a film which wants to appeal to a black audience. That having been said, I have seen "ethnic" films which I found to be quite good. I suspect that if Africa had an indigenous film industry which put out work in English that some of it would be pretty good. The problem with the stuff in the US is that they try to work their domestic political agenda into everything. One drop of poison taints the whole glass.

This looks to me like a proposal to make more transmissible and more robust versions of SARS. We didn't get more robust (thankfully) but we sure did get more transmissible. I also wonder whether - and am afraid if - they were doing the same thing with MERS.

It's hard to claim any authority in the scripture when you are picking and choosing. As I said, when Christ himself was on earth, he reinforced the creation story with Adam and Eve. He also reinforced the flood story.

Evolutionists set out to disprove God. It's the fundamental of naturalism. While I agree that the science matches what the Bible says, attempting to corroborate modern science with the Bible when they are deliberately denying God is a fool's errand. And as I already listed, to follow the process of the naturalists is to reject God. You can't have both sides. Evolution makes fundamental Bible doctrines nonsense.

364 Belief, or faith, in our time, may involve accepting the Bible even though it does not line up with our better understanding of the material world that we undoubtedly possess. The word of God was given TO a pre scientific people and expressed in a way that made sense to them. It is most certainly FOR us today as much as it was thousands of years ago. We must have faith.

Trying to explain completely unfamiliar, other-worldly things that really have no possible explanation in day to day terms that is satisfying. Lots of handwaving and modeling and "it's like xyz, but not exactly". Yet, those incomprehensible things are ultimately the underpinning of all daily experience whether you realize it or not.

In one case, the method is metaphysical analysis, lived experience, revelation, tradition. In the other, it is the vaunted Scientific Method coupled with a boatload of creative thinking.

368 Some say the commonality of early creation myths is evidence that they were all cribbing off each other. I think it's because they were all trying to describe the same thing.

369 "themselves admit that (especially the book of Genesis) the Creation story is metaphorical."

They also reject Christ, so I'm not really sure Christians can count them as a biblical authority.

370 Squid, have no doubt, I fully understand what you're saying and why. But those who dismiss the Word as lore will do so for a host of reasons other than the meaning of "yom" as used in Genesis.

For some reason, for example, they grant even less significance to the inarguable and eternally significant fact that the grave is empty, choosing to simply ignore Paul's extensive listing of evidence relating to the resurrection including the "multitudes" of eye witnesses that saw the risen Jesus in the period after the crucifixion and before the ascension.

In the case of the creation, I am not willing to grant them logical cover behind their bogus arguments citing "obvious" issues with geologic timescales, especially given the fact that creation is being described to us as occurring in a specific timeframe by a being that is by definition timeless, especially given Peter's admonition to us regarding how soon we should expect the return.

371 "The word of God was given TO a pre scientific people and expressed in a way that made sense to them. It is most certainly FOR us today as much as it was thousands of years ago. We must have faith."

Believing God raised his (obedient) son from the dead is the fundamental of faith. That we will one day be like him, in a new spiritual body ... those beliefs are well beyond our scientific comprehension, and those are our hope. ... But the old testament is "for our learning" Romans 15:4 ... (a man's gotta know his limitations Clint 15:4 ha)

And yet, we use their books as the OT.

373 365 The Old Testament is, of course, a translation from the Torah. Talmudic scholars themselves admit that (especially the book of Genesis) the Creation story is metaphorical.

Genesis was not intended as a scientific treatise on how life came to be. It was an introduction of a monotheistic God -- His nature and relationship to man and all of creation -- to a culture where polytheism was the norm. That said, there are tremendous implications from the creation account. Things like "in the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth." That the biblical account is in-line with scientific discovery that the universe is expanding, and as such, time can be rolled back to a point where all that matter had a starting point.

At the same time, I go nuts listening to people who torture logic by trying to align scientific discovery with literal interpretations of Genesis text. My faith in Christ is not shattered if the universe took a few million years to form rather than six days. None of what Jesus said concerned itself one whit with the How of creation, but with the Who and Why.

374 "And yet, we use their books as the OT."

Most Christians consider them God's old testament. Christians believe Christ is the truth. To reject God's truth is to accept lies. At that point, you become a detriment to yourself and others in regards to all things spiritual. It doesn't matter how educated or familiar Jews are with the Bible, if they don't accept Christ, they are dead spiritually.

Paul had several run ins and much to say about the Jews who refused Christ, but wanted to push Judaism. They are our enemies regarding the gospel, even if beloved for the father's sake.
