Governor Ralph Northam -- The Blackface Enthusiast -- Further Vandalizes the Robert E. Lee Monument By Digging Up a Time Capsule from 1887 and Replacing It With Tawdry Woke Crap from Current Year
This reads like a Babylon Bee parody, but it's real.
Governor Blackface took down the Robert E. Lee statue and then decided to vandalize the time capsule buried under it, taking out objects, and replacing it with ones from this trivial but evil age:
They're going to remove a 133-year-old copper time capsule inside the pedestal and replace it with one that they say will reflect the current cultural climate in Virginia. "The past 18 months have seen historic change, from the pandemic to protests for racial justice that led to the removal of these monuments to a lost cause," Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said in a news release. "It is fitting that we replace the old time capsule with a new one that tells that story." In June 2020, just days after the murder of George Floyd, Northam announced the decision to remove the Lee statue. Floyd's death sparked protests over police brutality and racism across the United States. The Commonwealth removed the 12 ton Lee statue on Wednesday, more than 130 years after it was first installed. The original time capsule was placed in the pedestal of the Confederate monument on Oct. 27, 1887, according to Virginia historians. In a statement from Northam's office, officials said records from the Library of Virginia show that the people of Richmond contributed approximately 60 artifacts featured inside of the capsule. Some of the objects of the old capsule are believed to have ties to the Confederacy, the governor's office said."Believed to." Meaning, some woke college students made some guesses and that now becomes official state policy.
"This monument and its time capsule reflected Virginia in 1890--and it's time to remove both so that our public spaces better reflect who we are as a people in 2021," Northam said. When the capsule is removed on Thursday, state officials said the original capsule will be given to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources -- making room for the Commonwealth's new capsule in its place. ... According to the governor's office, a group of historians, educators, artists and state officials worked together to select nearly 40 submissions to be placed inside the new time capsule. Some of the items include a photo of a Black ballerina taken by a local Richmond photographer in front of the statue, Kente cloth worn at the 400th commemoration of 1619, a "Black Lives Matter" sticker, "Stop Asian Hate" fliers, an LGBTQ pride pin, and an expired vial of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine.Governor Blackface is doing this. I'm not. It's a part of history. And it's never been as simple as it's portrayed, and a whole shitload of people in these places still revere people like Lee. Some for good reasons. Some not. Not my place to say which are which.

My sister is now in her 60s, but can tell you about the revulsion that visit caused in her -- the idea of one man selling another stayed with her for 50+ years.

It's astounding how much people miss the point. A time capsule is *supposed* to reflect the era in which it was packed. You open it at some time in the future and look back and think. What were their worries? What did they wear? What did they was important for me to know? How were their lives different? What do I see that I think would be better, if anything? What can I learn? What were their motivations?
But no. Just "it's old, so destroy it and replace it with something new. Shove it into a warehouse." I am stunned he didn't just have it sent to one of those big car crushers for destruction.
What's in the new one? Clothing that doesn't come from our culture. Minor historical figures. Identity politics totems. Ironically - and in a manner that's deeply depressing - it sounds like they're picking things *very* appropriate to our stupid era. What will future generations - assuming they're not like Northam, and just throw it away - think when they open this? I shudder at the thought.

My grandparents (farmers in IL) told me from when I could understand english that our family always voted Republican because "Mr. Lincoln" saved the Union. Never Abraham, or Lincoln, or any combination. Mr. Lincoln. Their house was decorated with pictures of my family that had fought and died for the Union. The Civil War for them wasn't some dry historical theory. They were old enough to know men who fought in it.
They despised slavery to their Christian cores. The Union and Mr. Lincoln put an end to that. Period. End of story. All that said, my Grandfather read voraciously about the Civil War. Every book that came out during his life. He admired Robert E. Lee for many reasons, starting with his service to the American Army for his career. Service so distinguished that the command of the Union Army was offered to him first. Lee didn't fight to maintain slavery. He fought for Virginia, because loyalty to your State came before loyalty to your country in his mind and heart.

I used to live in Richmond and loved to drive the length of Monument Avenue, it really is an American example of a European "grand boulevard"...or was. Now it's just another street with fancy houses, with a statue of a black tennis player who died of AIDS at one end (Arthur Ashe--notice that is the one statue that hasn't been taken down) and a university full of hoodrats and woke morons at the other (VCU), and a defaced graffiti-covered pedestal in the middle.

Doubtful. Lee was almost out of artillery ammo by that time and the Army of Northern Virginia was in extremely bad shape, literally out of food, shoes, medicine and almost everything an army needs to keep operating in the field. DC was never going to fall to Lee. The defenses were to strong for him to over come with a weakened ill equipped army.

I have a remarkable sense of direction but I was completely disoriented when I walked into the Devil's Den. Amazingly nasty bit of terrain. Also the charge, all uphill, of cemetary ridge was ludicrous. Artillery support was of no use to Pickett. Had they focused on Little Round Top they would have won the field only to pack up and march back to Virginia.

If they just shrug and go "well it's mandated that we make everyone get vaccinated" that is the only option I see. Maybe they'll stall with "the rule shouldn't apply for those working offsite." I don't want to go to the extra fuss to be a contractor and I don't have a strong fear of the vaccine or a religious belief that getting it is promoting infanticide. But giving in to commiecrat bullying on this would be personally demoralizing to me.

I knew somebody who went to Gettysburg College in the late 60's and early 70s-our beloved pianist/treasurer who recently died.
