Cultures grow and prosper by creating from within and absorbing from without. The arrant stupidity and ignorance displayed by those who use the historically inconsistent term "cultural appropriation" is a testament to the Long March," which has dumbed down education to the point at which we have American college graduates with no understanding of how their own culture has evolved, and are completely unaware of the tremendous benefits the world has enjoyed, courtesy of America.

Can We Fix America's Food-Appropriation Problem?

Last month, a small-business owner named Karen Taylor made national headlines for all the wrong reasons. After a viral tweet exposed the racist and orientalist language used to market Taylor’s company, which specializes in $15 prepackaged congee kits and is called Breakfast Cure, critics made quick work of tearing the self-styled “Congee Queen” to shreds. Taylor, who is white, eventually apologized, and an essay on her company’s website, which was originally titled “How I discovered the miracle of congee and improved it,” was quickly edited (although the original title is still easily found in the page’s metadata).
For a week, my Twitter timeline was filled with Asians and our allies airing their righteous anger, sharing touching personal testimonies on what congee meant to them, and ridiculing Karen’s “white lady” ingredients like blueberries, apples, and cinnamon. On TikTok, multiple POC creators uploaded videos of themselves trying — and choking on — Breakfast Cure–style congee.

Notice the casual and unsubstantiated "RACISM"^TM charge? Its intent is to delegitimize her target, because her audience, mush-brained internet addicts, accept it as the gospel. Once the charge is made, there can be no more debate.

This dreck was written by Frankie -- me love you long time -- Huang, a pompous entitled twit who claims the mantle of moral superiority simply by stating an unsupported accusation of racism.

I emphasized that there's nothing particularly sacred about the dish, that anyone can make it, but that it doesn't make it okay for a white woman to anoint herself the Queen of Congee.

Ah yes...a White woman! Burn her! Except...the author of this vile piece is herself a "cultural appropriator" extraordinaire. She was born in China but them came to America to appropriate all of our disgusting Western ways, like educating women and not forcing abortions, or having a culture that accepts the abortion of girls as a matter of course. And than penicillin that you took for strep throat? Spit it out! That was the product of evil British Empire culture!

I am reminded of General Sir Charles James Napier, who forced the cultural mores of the West on the Hindus of India by -- shockingly -- ending the practice of "Sati" (suttee), the burning of widows on the funeral pyres of their husbands.

“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”

Perhaps we should agitate for the return of that particular cultural artifact...the respect for human life...and demand that the Hindus and others return to their own pure cultures...without modern medicine and respect for life and internal combustion engines and electrical power grids and air conditioning and barbed wire and...

My wife is willing to move but not until after our daughter finishes college so, five years. I anticipate significant inflation so it seems in our best interest to acquire our new home now and sell our current home then - if that's possible.

The money isn't a particular issue but...what do we do with the new house for 5 years? We can't leave it empty but renting it out seems a bad plan.

Anyone have thoughts?

Is your new town near a base at all? Renting to a military member is pretty safe. They get a housing allowance every month and if they don't pay you can go to their command and it'll be straightened out toot sweet.

15 Here's the thing: congee is rice porridge. Every culture that has rice has rice porridge. Oriental-style congee - especially the northern Chinese and the Korean varieties (in my opinion, of course) - are very good. They are not sacred and they are not even unique. A porridge base of grain and water is as old as agriculture.

My dad makes an unreal-good congee. I guess he's an appropriator just like me. Whatever.

None of us know what is going to be the economic situation in five years. I would not saddle myself with additional debt or even if you are using cash, I would not tie up money in a house I think I'm going to move into in five years. You have no idea what will happen with the neighborhood in five years in the new place, nor your current one. If you can't convince your wife to move now while rates are really low and selling is not difficult, then personally, I would wait and see what my circumstances are in four years and make a decision then.

Two quick thoughts. Near a hospital? I think it was a Tom Clancy novel, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think one of the characters made it a policy to rent to doctors because they were busy and less likely to go crazy with partying.
Dave Ramsey does not recommend being a landlord unless you live within about an hour of your rental property. He thinks you should be able to check in on the property. And I think he suggested creating reasons for such checks. *Yeah that HVAC filter gets clogged sometimes, so I will need to come each month to check on things. If you are not okay with that, we will have to think.

Property is all relative - assuming you stay in the same area. Of course, if you don't have to sell in order to buy - that's as good as it gets, as long as you're investing in *location*. Renting is always an option for a "home", and in your case - I'm guessing that you can hold on for a month or 3 in order to find the right tenant. I've been renting for 10 years, and only got screwed when I was behind the 8 ball and had to take somebody ASAP. *That* one could have been catostrophic. I'm only renting 1 house now, and love the tenants. They've been there for 7 years.

81 On the Wikipedia page for congee, it's clearly eaten in a wide variety of cultures and ethnicities. Some of whom really don't get along with each other. Who appropriated what from whom is somewhat difficult to ascertain, but it may have originated in South Asia (Indonesia) as congee is derived from a Tamil word. There's nothing racist about it. It's just a food that lots of people enjoy. Like French fries.

It's porridge. Congee is specifically a rice-based porridge. We use the word because then we don't have to say "A soupy rice porridge with various spices and protein sources (if you're rich)." Congee means the same thing as all that gobbledygook, so we use that word instead.

Grain + Water == Porridge isn't exactly monopolized by any given culture. It's probably the first post-agricultural food to go mainstream everywhere.

Yes, you can't be a proper landlord if you're too far away. In my case I'm about an hour, but I have an insanely great retired couple (sheriff). I had a nurse in my condo, she was great. The next people I rented to (Korean lady) was great until her kids moved in and started smoking. The house I'm in now got trashed. Way above and beyond the $5k deposit.

If you can swing it, a property management company is great, and 100% necessary if you're far away. They will do periodic checks on property, arrange for gardeners etc. and collect payment. They usually don't take much since that's what they do. If I move out of state, I'll hire a group unless I decide to sell.

Uncle Roger is pretty funny, although the shtick is getting a tiny bit old. It was funny when he was talking with customers at his restaurant. Funny thing? When I was at school with a bunch of students from China, Taiwan, Thailand, and S. Korea, they were excited when I talked about food from their countries that I make and enjoy. Oh yeah, if you peek into the kitchens of almost any ethnic restaurant here, you'll catch a bunch of swarthy looking guys who could be Mexican, Guatemalan, or Salvadoran. Vote audits and recounts were flying left and right in 2016 even though the results were not close enough to trigger automatic recounts and not a single democrat said a word about it, if fact the entire left was encouraging these recounts. It only stopped because every ballot box opened in Wayne County Michigan had less ballots in the box than was recorded on the box seal.

It was the intermingling of those cultures with the WC that raised most of them up from where they were and much of their cultures brought interesting concepts and ideas to ours. Along with food and other things the WC had not discovered before.

All well and good and many of those cultures also had bad stuff happen to them because of the WC also. Regardless, it is a fact that WC brought a safer, kinder, smarter, friendlier and mostly positive culture to all the others. Many were raised up and when the WC left they collapsed back into previous levels. Not all was good but most was not that bad and much was a positive. So they can tell me to quit appropriating their culture when they stop taking mine.

As a people? Yes, yes we do because a lot of folks knew all that was happening was not a good thing. They may not have known how things were going to get bad but they knew the direction we were taking was no a good direction. But they let it happen and did nothing to stop it or redirect it.

I think this happens to most countries; they succeed then they get into a couple wars and they win but the courageous and brave amongst them get culled from the gene pool and the country becomes diluted. Plus because of various reasons the weak and mentally deficient become able to breed and they do and the blood is diluted even more.

A look at history can see this arch from strong and powerful to weak and indecisive and it's not long after the indecisive stage that they either collapse or are taken over.

Even worse, I used to deal with one electronics supplier (a surprisingly honest one) who I'm virtually certain had an English name associated with the sales rep assignment our account, but they had multiple salespeople who used that name. I could tell it was different people emailing me as John Kuhn from the varying facility with the English language.

One of my claims to fame here was having my ex SiL on the sidebar. Almost ever since I've known her, she's been going around the country brokering baby parts. The video in question she was being deposed and admitted to holding a still beating baby heart. Fucking vile, evil POS. What's mind blowing is her mother is a foster mom, has raised dozens of kids, adopted and to this day in her 80's, goes to the hospital to hold babies (many of which are dying). I considered showing her the video - but she knows. I knew. And I swear, the best thing about my divorce is never having to pretend to be civil to that human trash ever again.

I vaguely remember a movie from the 60s where a white businessman gave a deep, deep bow to some Japanese executives during a negotiation. And in so doing, he totally fucked the negotiations because the Japanese were offended. Can't remember if they thought he was mocking them or if they thought he was just clueless about Japanese etiquette.

Hell, here in the Democratic People's Republic of Oregon, they are sending money to nearly every kid because I guess they feel like they should have literally fed every kid for free last year but didn't. So they are sending prepaid debit cards in the kids' name, no joke. I assume that means that they will also shovel that government slop for free at every kid in Government Day Care this year.

FWIW, my kids won't be getting their cards since they have been enrolled in charter school, womp womp.

464 Congee is absolute crap but the truth is that there are dozens of variations all across Asia and they all add different things to it to make it taste better.

It is gruel. The sort of stuff we stopped feeding people when the workhouses closed down.

I know they don't have a point, they're just attacking a woman because she's white, but it's still stupid.
European variations on rice pudding are much better.

I knew this guy once who was a bit weird with food. We went as a group to Pizza hut once and he ate a napkin.

Anyway, he took to only eating rice and he ended up giving himself Beri-Beri, which is a thiamine deficiency.
